Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

To be honest, I stumbled upon my career. I am a modest fashion influencer and a full-time employee in a multinational. Speaking of what I always wanted; it was to be a Chartered Accountant,but life had other plans. That being said, without a word of doubt I have zero regrets. Its important to be passionate and self-motivated in order to achieve something, be it something that you wanted or what life stumbles you upon.

What was your “aha!” moment?

The aha moments keep occurring but if I have to talk about one, it was having my Dad saying it to me, “You are my pride!”

What is the #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list?

To be frank there is a whole list of things that are yet to be ticked off, but #1 would be to travel alone!

What does nobody tell you about being the boss?

It wouldn’t be as easy and as fancy as it appears to be. There will be a dozen challenges coming your way to be an obstacle in your journey. But stay put, hang in there, and it will all be worth it.

Name one Boss Lady that you admire and how she still inspires you?

There is no one in particular. You meet different people time to time. So I admire not just one but a number of women. My finance teacher Tazeen Arsalan is one hell of a boss lady! My communications teacher Shumaila Omer. My cousin who is a housewife and also a news anchor, Sadia Ghous. So yeah, a couple of them are worth admiring.

Did you ever consider or experience a career change?

YES! My entire existence is a living example of a career change. I am a student of BSc in Accounting and Finance and I have always been great with "TO ME, A numbers. Having interned at one #BOSSLADY IS of the Big 4 Audit firms, I chose PERSISTENT, to switch to marketing being an influencer and I couldn’t be any RESILIENT & happier! It’s never too late to DETERMINED." recognize your passion!

When was a time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it?

I was rejected admission in almost every university I applied to despite being a topper in my school and college life. That was a huge setback and it killed my self-confidence, but it also gave me a chance to ponder that life doesn’t end here. The world is full of possibilities and opportunities. So here I am, almost graduating with a 3.5 CGPA and already paying my own bills!

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you?

Tenacity and persistence; nothing beats it!

What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life?

The wordless pride on my parents’ face, my independence and my husband!

Describe a day in your life.

My day starts at 5:30; mum wakes us all up for Fajr. I love breakfasts so I take a good 45 minutes to enjoy my breakfast and tea while watching my favorite episode. Then I get ready, leave for work on weekdays and university on weekends. My evening is spent with my family having dinner or I step out with my husband and friends. There’s one thing that goes on alongside and that’s my own work; my blog, my content. It never stops.

Persistent, resilient and determined.

What did you learn from your biggest failure?

You must wait for the right time. It may be the best thing for you but not the best time. It shall come to you if it’s yours, just wait. Patiently.

What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours?

Just don’t give up and never be hopeless. No matter what situation you’re in, you MUST put your dreams on top. The rest just follows.

We speak to the super talented team behind One How did you get your idea or concept for ONE? Shahkam Industries has been in business for more than two decades. It has established a reputation as a leading garment factory in the region and is proud to work with the premiere brands of the fashion world internationally.

ONE is a brainchild of Shahkam Industries. I felt that there was a

vacuum in the high street market for clothes that were both affordable yet desirable and fashion forward at the same time. ONE is meant to fill that gap and set a new standard.

How did you handle adversity and doubt?

Sometimes adversity helps overcome doubt. Making a Pakistani

brand successful in the market was hard but with determination and fortitude we did it. People here give priority to international brands, especially when it comes to western clothing so it was a tough one but I never let my focus get distracted and kept going on.

How do you plan on growing your business?

We want to attract the fashion forward customers who want affordable everyday clothes but do not want to compromise on design and quality.

How did you build your team?

While building my team I wanted individuals that passionately embrace the vision, believe their contribution is meaningful and are motivated to give their best effort. Today I can proudly say that my team is my strength.

What challenges did you face to make a Pakistani brand successful in the market?

With ONE we entered a market that already has many players and that of course has its own challenges. However I believe ONE has something that no one else can offer and that is an emphasis on design and quality based on our time tested Shahkam experience. ONE will become an industry player in the high street clothing brands for sure.

What was your mission at the outset?

To give my countrymen something they can be proud of. To give them a high street clothing brand that is according to latest fashion trends and that they can flaunt proudly.

To what do you attribute your success?

To my team that is equally passionate and fervent. Effective teamwork is an important aspect of any organization’s success. When working on your own, you only have a single perspective over things. On the other hand, working with a team offers different perspectives and ideas, which ends up bringing much better results.

Describe your typical day at work.

Kick off with an espresso shot and work the day as planned.

What are your responsibilities as a business owner?

As a business owner I am responsible for my brand, my customers and my employees. I have to keep a strict check on the quality being produced; I have to keep in mind the customer’s satisfaction as well. At ONE our customers and their choices are of

utmost priority for us. We inculcate elements as per their demands. We experiment with our fabrics, style and cuts keeping the overall look and feel minimal, chic and fashion forward. The USP of our designs is that they are unique, practical, affordable and versatile, perfectly suitable for the majority.

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

“Believe in yourself, don't give up, don't take anything personally, and don't take no for an answer.”

Why did you decide to become a jewellery designer?

I think it was my destiny! I am very fond of jewellery and while living in New York I couldn’t find the fusion of traditional and contemporary style, so I decided to design my own. With encouragement and support of my family and friends, I held my first exhibition in Washington DC in 1982 which was a sell out...and the rest is history.

Who has been your biggest inspiration and why?

All the glamorous ladies! Especially Coco Chanel has been my role model for business and fashion. I saw a documentary on her life in my younger days and have admired her style, dedication and commitment to pursuit of excellence and the way she made a difference in the world of fashion by breaking all gender barriers.

By the grace of Allah, my clients are very refined and polite. Their satisfaction is my top priority. If I feel they are not happy, I encourage them to register their genuine complains and try to offer my help.

Once someone asked me at my jewellery exhibition in New Dehli, "you look like such a Pakistani begum Sahib, how can you work so hard?"

If you weren’t a jewellery designer, what would you be doing right now?

My passion for perfection and my creative talent could not have been expressed well than in jewelry designing. I am totally satisfied with being one and I cannot thank Allah enough for his infinite blessings.

Which international jewellery design house do you look up to and why?

House of Bulgari has always attracted me with their glamour, choice of vibrant gemstones and vision.

What is your creative process before you launch a collection?

I travel a lot and I get my inspiration from ancient designs of old civilizations and cultures, works of Maestros and of course nature.

What’s the advice you live by?

Difficulties are challenges for me to learn and get ahead in life. I have tried to face them with a smile and never give up.

What is your favorite song to belt out at in the car?

Sufi songs, they connect me with my creator, my Allah! Music is one of my passions in this world.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I am a straightforward and simple person; don’t think I have any surprises.

Who has been your mentor in this industry and what would you like to say to them today?

My family has been my mentor and support in my career, especially my husband who has been by my side and helped me beyond the call of duty.

Ten years from now you will be…

Hopefully, I will be learning and working around the clock to make and create better jewelry!

We chose to go to Japan because it was a place we hadn't ever been to but had heard so much about, that we had to go see it for ourselves. Upon going, we were taken aback by the beauty and the culture, the people there, and most importantly the cleanliness!

Tell us the most delicious meal you tried?

When we started planning our trip and thought about the food we'd eat, the first thing that came to mind was sushi. However we later realised that Japanese food is so much more than just sushi. Japanese cuisine is one of the world's most diverse; with fresh vegetables, meats and seafood.
