Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted?

I loved clothes, loved looking at new sleek cuts and fashionably dressed people. Aesthetics were always important to me so I started my clothing business as soon as my kids were at a school going age and I could focus on making beautiful designs.

Who are you and what do you do?

My Names Imran salman zia, I’m a visual communication designer. I’ve always been a daydreamer whose imagination is always on over-drive. I believe while thoughts and insane fantasies can be communicated through words and sentences, it’s always better to have a canvas around, where one can illustrate their heart out.

Why do you do what you do?

Painting has always proved to be therapeutic and that too when you leave it to chance, when one thought over-rides the former and the cycle continues. Sometimes, I even amaze myself.

What is integral to the work of an artist?

To allow criticism to perhaps shape but never define your work, because only you get to decide who you are and how your skill-set works.

What form of art do you identify with the most?

Twisted, surrealistic paintings and sculptures. Tim Burton/ focus feature animations are the kind of masterpieces I can relate to, Coralline is definitely my anthem. MC Escher, Salvador Dali, Gustav Klimt and Hieronymus Bosch are amongst my favorites. Phantasmagorical art is what truly resonates with me.

What’s your strongest memory from your childhood?

If there’s one thing from nature that truly has me mesmerized every time, it’s the world of little critters, from bizarre bodies to luminescent colors, much like a visual acid-trip. I remember it as clear as water, a skink (lizard) was squiggling around in the backyard, completely captivated by its vibrant blue tail, I felt like the upper half was a little plain. I designed a crown out of peacock feathers and gave her a gentle makeover. In my head, she was now an empress.

What themes do you pursue?

I’m mostly ever only exploring the darker side of human nature.

And I mean dark not violent. More like desires that haven’t found a keyhole yet. While absurdity and Fairytales have always tickled my fancy, the content that goes into creating my work, is always personal, ranging from inside-jokes to real situations.

Describe a real life situation that inspired you.

This one time, Can’t remember why, but I was fidgeting with a bottle of gold powder. Before i knew it, it was all over my hands and arms.

Coated in gold, a million little ideas flooded my brain.

Why art?

Why not? You can give everyone a variety of lenses to view the world with.

What food, drink or song speaks to you?

Well there’s this dessert, It’s called “Anna’s Mess”, A delicate white chocolate globe encompassing a variety of treats, but isn’t served till it isn’t smashed onto the table.

Most inspirational place?

Ha-ha, Memory lane of course, nothing tops that. A wild imagination meshed together with years of boxed up moments is all I need to peer into. Maybe a secluded secret garden, where I can explore and day dream over a cup of coffee, macaroons and a cigarette.

Dream project?

The project is underway, there’s a lot of work required to make it happen. I wouldn’t want to jinx it by talking about it, though I could drop a hint: think along the lines of interactive installations.

Ramadan COOK BOOK

zoha mateen of @zo.the. nutrionist is a (bsc & msc) in human nutrition and dietetic from mcgill university. she has a wealth of experience in the field of health and wellness. she sheds light on the nutrition industry while giving us four healthy, delicious recipes for Iftar.

HEALTHY ASIAN SESAME PINEAPPLE CHICKEN • prep time 15 minutes | • cook time 10 minutes • total time 25 minutes servings 4 Ingredients • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts (cut into 1/2 inch cubes) • 2 Tbsp cornstarch | • 1 pinch each salt & pepper • 2 Tbsp sesame oil | • 1 cup brown rice • Small bunch spring onions, chopped • 3 Tbsp soy sauce | • 2 Tbsp honey or brown sugar • 2 tsp sriracha or hot chilli sauce (add more for more heat) • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated • 1 clove garlic, minced • 2 Tbsp sesame seeds Instructions 1) In a medium bowl, combine the soy sauce, honey, sriracha or chilli sauce, ginger, garlic, sesame seeds and 1 Tbsp sesame oil. Set aside.

2) Cut a pineapple in half, lengthwise. Spoon out the insides to form a pineapple bowl, leaving an inch of pineapple fruit.

3) In a large bowl combine the chicken, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Heat a large pan over high heat for at least 2 minutes.

Add 1 Tbsp oil and chicken to pan. Stir-fry chicken for 6-8 minutes or until it's golden brown. Add the sauce and allow the sauce to simmer for 3-4 minutes or until the sauce is thick and sticky.

4. Remove chicken from pan and place into one half of the pineapple bowl. Sprinkle with chopped spring onions and more sesame seeds if desired. Place hot brown rice in the other half of the bowl.

ASIAN STYLE LENTIL LETTUCE CUPS Ingredients • 1 cup red lentils | • 1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil | • 1 cup chopped red bell pepper | • 3/4 cup finely chopped yellow onion • 1 cup matchstick carrots | • 1 Tbsp minced garlic (3 cloves) • 1 Tbsp minced fresh ginger | • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce, or more to taste | • 2 Tbsp soy sauce, or to taste | • 1 tsp sesame oil • 1/4 cup chopped green onions | • 2 Tbsp vinegar | • 2 Tbsp chopped cilantro | Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional) 1 head of iceberg lettuce

OVERNIGHT CHIA SEED PUDDING WITH STRAWBERRY SAUCE prep time12 hours servings 4 Ingredients chia seed pudding • 1 cup low-fat milk | • 1 cup low-fat yogurt • 1/4 cup chia seeds | • 1/2 cup kiwi and strawberries, sliced | • 2 Tbsp honey | • 1 tsp pure vanila extract strawberry sauce • 1/2 lb fresh or frozen strawberries, chopped • 2 Tbsp water | • 1 1/2 Tbsp sugar • 1/2 Tbsp lemon juice Instructions 1) Chia Seed Pudding In a medium bowl, gently whisk the milk, yogurt, honey and vanilla extract until just blended. Whisk in the chia seeds; let stand 30 minutes. Stir to distribute the seeds evenly if they have settled.

2) Strawberry Sauce In a small saucepan over low heat, add the strawberries, water and sugar. Stir to combine and leave simmering uncovered for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes, smash the strawberries with the back of a wooden spoon to break them up. Continue simmering over low heat for another 15-30 minutes, until desired thickness is achieved. After it is done cooking, stir in the lemon juice. Place strawberry sauce into a bowl.

3) Cover and refrigerate the bowls overnight.

4) Press kiwi slices onto the insides of 4 bowls or glasses, then spoon the pudding into the 4 bowls. Adjust kiwi position as you fill the glasses. Pour strawberry sauce on top of the pudding.

Then add chopped strawberries.

Directions: 1) Simmer lentils in unsalted water for 20 mins. Drain and set aside.

2) Sauté bell pepper and onion in olive oil for 5 - 6 minutes.

3) Add in carrots, garlic and ginger (2 mins sauté) then add in drained lentils, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil.

4) Garnish with green onions, cilantro and optional sesame seeds. Serve filling warm in lettuce leaves.
