You recently got married; could you tell us a little about how you both met?

Like everything else in my life, it was completely unexpected and sudden. I think this is how life rewards you when you go with the flow. I had been getting a lot of these questions about marriage and commitment since I started my singing career, but never gave it any serious thought. I’ve always been a big believer in things happening when you allow them to happen.

My husband and I were friends initially, and before we knew it, we decided that we wanted to have a committed relationship and be together. It all happened in the course of a few weeks.

Sandaraa recently released a new track, what do you have planned with your band in the new year?

I’m very excited about Sandaraa this year because we just released our first-ever musical composition in Urdu, Farz Karo, by the great Urdu poet, Ibn-e-Insha.

For the past few years Sandaraa has been doing a lot of work around folk music (Dari, Pashto, Saraiki, Punjabi folk) where we tried to understand how the rhythms work. After which the next step for us was to see if we could try and create something together as a band. So when Michael Winograd [a clarinet maestro and also part of the band] got us a grant by Chamber Music America’s Classical Commissioning Program, we

decided to cover the works of Urdu poetry in our songs. There’s so much beautiful poetry in the subcontinent that one can gain inspiration from and learn from as a musician. We have some really exciting things happening for Sandaraa this year which I’ll have to stay mum about for the moment!

Lipstick Under My Burkha has wowed film critics and received immense praise overseas - what was it like, donning the hat of the film's sole Music Director?

It was beyond anything I have ever dreamt of. Not only because I got the honour of being the sole music director of an entire film for the first time in my life; but also because of the team of amazing women that I worked with. Even though I’ve done projects in Mumbai before over the years, there was something very special about this project. Work felt like one big party. We’d listen to music together, share ideas…it all happened so quickly because we were all on the same page about our creative choices and about our intentions for the project. It was refreshing too, because in an extremely hyper and commercialized space such as Mumbai, one finds that everyone is under a certain level of stress (where you feel like you have to make sure the audience will accept and like your project), but it never felt that way during this project. At a professional level, it gave me immense responsibility and space; it was a steep learning curve.

What's your work process like?

It has evolved a lot over the years, but it also depends on the kind of project I’m engaged in. The most important thing for me has been when I’m just not worrying about anything, when I have nothing else on my mind and I’m able to be completely present in the moment. That’s when my best ideas will come to me.

You recently stated that your main aim is to highlight good music from Pakistan; an example being your efforts with Ali Sethi in putting your ustaad,

Naseeruddin Saami, and the American music producer, Ian Brennan, together for a collaboration. Please comment…

When I first got into this industry with Haniya, I remember how much trouble we got into; we signed a contract with a record label who then misappropriated the contract and were very aggressive with us. They actually stopped us from getting awards. We were so shocked by how exploitative the industry was and when we tried to get some kind of guidance from our peers, there was nothing.

People just told us to suck it up and deal with it. As time went on, I realized there’s some-

incredible masters around us. One of them is our ustaad – Naseeruddin Saami - who is a master musician. The only one of his ilk, the only source of his gharana, Khayal (an 850-year-old tradition), who practices the art form in its original form. So after knocking on a few doors of corporates, our peers and the development sector (no one was interested), we decided to do our own thing, and this year, thanks to Ali Sethi, we got Ustaad Naseeruddin Saami to collaborate with a Grammy-winning music producer from the US who flew down to Karachi to record an album. This is just the beginning!

In an interview last year, you stated: "I refuse to bow down to how the industry wants to craft me as a woman." Since your foray into the music business, it must have been incredibly difficult to go against the grain...

It has. The market dynamics of the media industry all over the world are such that there are certain rules by which womanhood, femininity and beauty are viewed, and there are certain standards that if you don’t subscribe to them, you’re not always rewarded and are sometimes sidelined.

And that is the reason why it has become so commercialized, because we’ve stopped engaging with the community of our traditional musicians. This wasn’t the case in the past where lots of great musicians were given centre stage and that respect. But their mastership is being dimmed under the fog of celebrity and marketability. Therefore Ali Sethi and myself (and a few friends in Karachi), thought about how we could create more awareness of the

That for me was a really big challenge because I used to feel there was so much pressure; infact once I remember the first time I was interviewed with Haniya on a news channel and a girl sitting next to me said; ‘Oh how cute, girls with guitars and shallus.’ I found it so strange for an educated person to say something like that.

That’s when Haniya and I decided that you know what, we’re going to BE the girls in the shallus and we are going to show that it doesn’t matter! One should be allowed to don any image that they want, but currently its one big, commercialized sameness; women seem to be losing their personalities and looking more like each other. But that’s what’s being rewarded. It’s been difficult but look, I’m still here, I do the work, I’m getting some of the biggest projects and it has worked for me. I’m very humble and thankful for doing whatever I have done without straying away from who I was.

What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?

My uncle told me: ‘Be nice to people on your way up because you will meet them on your way down.’ I believe time does not remain the same and this quote teaches a life lesson!

Where did you choose to go and why?

Our spring 2018 lawn, Sayuri Is inspired by modern and classic Orientalism, the collection amalgamates deconstructive Japanese art, traditional chinoiserie so we chose to go to Japan.

kyoto. It was beyond magical. The resort was only accessible via a special boat service which crossed a turquoise river shadowed by lavender cherry blossoms! The resort itself was Ryokan themed in traditional Japanese style with gorgeous Zen gardens and 400 year old bonsai trees.

Who did you travel with?

We are blessed to work with the most dyanamic and talented team! Along with Maliha and shahan, Muzi our photographer, Imaan the face of FTA, Shaarqa our Make up artist and our Tokyo based production team also joined in on the adventure.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there?

Sugarhill kyoto and Mikaku.
