9 Reasons Why Yoga Is The Best Form Of Excercise This article is coming straight from my heart and soul- a girl who never worked out, never hit the gym and didn't care much to diet. I've seen many of my friends try various workout plans to lose weight or get in shape but that was never a cause of worry for me. I've never had that perfect toned body we all dream of but the fact that my weight was under control was enough to let me continue to be the ignorant fool/junkie I had always been. Being a Paperazzi girl is such a fun job but there are days where stress levels are higher than the ceiling and unread whatsapp messages, e-mails and print deadlines while keeping up with life in general are enough to give you more anxiety than you've ever known. After ignoring every suggestion of workout plans to channel my stress levels, a friend enticed me towards the power of yoga. So I did what I always do when something inspires me- I googled. After reading hundreds of reviews, I didn't waste any time in overthinking this time and immediately signed up for Basic Yoga with Salina Taqi at Studio X and even though it has only been a few months, all I have to say is that: "I regret starting yoga... said no one ever!""

BY NATASIA KHALID

SO HERE'S WHY I LOVE YOGA AND HAVE MADE IT MY MISSION TO INSPIRE MORE AND MORE PEOPLE TO START PRACTICING IT:

REASON NO. 1: i love how i look. Not only is it a powerful confidence booster when it comes to your body shape, it has taught me how to sit and stand tall and stop slouching. Although I never joined yoga to get fitter or in shape, my body feels fabulous inside and out and so does my skin! 24

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2015

REASON NO. 2: the power of your heart. Usually during our practices, our Yogi teacher uses the term "open out your heart" with focus and poses to compliment this instruction. I often found myself thinking of the people I have lost in one way or another and instead of sorrow, or resentment I sent them love. Yoga has the power to heal and help you move forward rather than standing still.

REASON NO. 3: exert less. strengthen more. The main reason why I hadn't ever joined the gym was because I am not a big fan of too much physical exertion. Although we do sweat out a lot during some classes, for me the best part about yoga are the restorative poses that help you rejuvenate and stretch out any blockages in your body. My core and upper body feels more strengthened than ever before.

REASON NO. 5: no rush, take it easy. I was quite worried about being behind all the advanced practitioners in my class but if you really give it your best shot, patience and focus you'll get there in no time. And "there" does not necessarily mean head stands. I've learnt how to take it slow and just BE. The benefits of this are magical in the yoga class and outside. I'm officially on the road to bid goodbye to stress as I've realised, stress won't speed up any process in life.

REASON NO. 8: i can practice yoga with my friends. I've started having endless conversations about yoga with my friends who practice it and once in while we do dive into a pose to see what works, and I just love it! Late night shenanigans now involve my sister, who is a kick boxer, and I challenging each other's flexibility.

REASON NO. 4: anywhere, anytime. I can practice yoga whenever and wherever I like and all I need is my yoga mat. You don't need to make any extra efforts or introduce yourself to any machines or equipments. I literally have a yoga routine on my bed to help me fall asleep. Ever heard of child's pose or Savasana?

REASON NO. 6: present in the now. Initially I was quite disconnected with my body, but I'm slowly developing my breathing technique and my alignment. I still have a long way to go but all I can say is it has taught me how to bring awareness into the moment. The gift of Yoga is that it allows your mind to be present and process everything that goes on in your life only to embrace calmness and focus. REASON NO. 7: the Secret. Yoga has taught me how to find mental balance. I can't deny that I do let certain emotions bug me once in a while but certainly less than before. I've started working on the importance eliminating the toxic emotions and rather maintain a positive, happy and healthy spirit. I've learnt the power of focusing on what I want to achieve, nothing else matters. REASON NO. 9: omg the yoga outfits!! This may or may not even be a very appealing reason to many but you must know that they make the cutest and most fun outfits for yogis and since I suffer from shopaholism, this has given me a new found happiness in life- to shop and look good in my Yoga outfits, and Ofcourse FEEL SUPER GOOD!! 2015

Any advice for the upcoming musicians?

Subject yourself.

When did you discover that you eventually wanted to do music as a career? I didn't decide to be a musician -- it just happened. I was obsessed with singing, I pursued it as a vocation, and before long I found myself in a recording studio. You have a diverse portfolio in terms of writing, acting and singing. Which one of these is most close to your heart? Music is the closest to my heart because it liberates me. Did you get any formal training? I've been apprenticed to Ustad Naseeruddin Saami for seven years. Tell us a little about “Mahi Mera and the theme of the song? 'Mahi Mera' is a song about love and separation -- the usual Sufi themes. The lyrics are polyvalent: you can interpret them in multiple ways. (So the longed-for 'Mahi' can be a person, a place, a way of life.) 26

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2016

How did you discover Jamaldin and the collaboration for Mahi Mera took place? I saw Jamaldin for the first time at a wedding two years ago. He was singing 'Mahi Mera' and dancing to the beat of a dhol. I knew right away that he was a very special singer. The song and the video are not very mainstream. Do you feel there are people who still listen to such kind of music? The great thing about Pakistani music is that there isn't a mainstream, by which I mean that for the last many years we've seen a sort of cross-fertilisation take place between different genres and styles of music. Qawwals working with rock musicians, pop stars turning to devotional poetry. And before that we had classically-trained singers pouring their knowledge of music into "lighter" forms like ghazal and kaafi. Some people attribute this to the lack of an organizes music industry. Whatever it is, I'm grateful for it, because it ensures an audience for a variety of musical styles. (So yes, people are listening to 'Mahi Mera' and responding to the radical video as well!) How was the experience of working with Umar Riaz on the video as it is very conceptual yet very raw? I feel Umar is a filmmaker with a musical sensibility. He can intuit the pulse of a place -- the mood, the temper. I am astonished, in retrospect, by all the things he picked up in Jamaldin's village. Nothing was lost on him. That's what I wanted for this video -- curious but sympathetic lens, one that could show us the setting but also inhabit its inner workings -- and I think he more than delivered. How do you define your genre of music? I'm wary of definitions at this stage, mainly because I'm still playing around with genres. For purposes of pegging I'd say I'm a hybrid new-age folk musician. (But I don't know what that means!) Is your music for a specific age group? I don't think so. Who are your biggest inspirations in music? .Farida Khanum, Mehdi Hasan, Iqbal Bano, Ustad Barkat Ali Khan. These days I'm obsessed with a Brazilian musician called Rodrigo Amarante. His album 'Cavalo' is out of this world Do you think so that traditional music will flourish in Pakistan in the coming years? I don't know if it will flourish. I do know that a lot of "burger" musicians (like me) are trying to connect with traditional sources, and that bodes well for music in general.

planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? Thailand! Some people choose to go sightseeing in Rome or have more of a relaxing honeymoon in Mauritius., we thought it’d be best to party it out instead of just lay on some sandy beach with a view that you can see in photos. Thailand has everything! The natural beauty, sandy beaches, bungee jumping, scuba diving, snorkeling and most importantly the Full Moon. The best thing about Thailand is that it is probably the best value for money you can get.

and then back to Bangkok for another 2 (to end it with a shopping spree). So we stayed all in hotels all over. Because it was our honeymoon we did the hotels but we’re planning a trip back there with a group of friends this July. This time we plan on only doing the backpacker’s hostels/dorms. The best place about the hostels/ dorms are that groups and individuals are there from all over the world and are looking forward to meeting new people instead of just locking themselves in a hotel room.

Who did you travel with? Faryal – my wonderful wife and travel partner.

What are the best shopping spots there? Chattu Chuk market in Bangkok! It’s a weekend market where there are nearly 10,000 stalls. It kicks off 6am and ends at 6pm and is flooded with tourists. You can find bargain deals on everything there. Near Gate 25 you’ll run into the old antique shops that

Where did you stay? We were in Bangkok for 3 nights, Phuket for 4, Koh Pagnagn for 4

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? Thailand is not really about the restaurants. It’s about the street food. Shrimp Pad Thai is amazing. You can get sushi for 10 bht per piece (that’s only Rs. 30). In Thong Sala, Koh Pagnang we came across this amazing food market. There were like 100 food stalls just crammed into a small parking lot. We tried all types of seafood and came across a halal stall so just grubbed.

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Thailand is home to some great yoga retreats and mediation centers. Going there or even to the beach in Haad Rin is relaxing enough. It depends on you. Finally, any tips? Before going to sleep make sure you know what you’re doing the next morning. All of the tourist packages pick you up at 6-8am from your hotel room. Finally, don’t trust anyone.

travel

travel diaries

Suggest places for a perfect night out Whatever you do, plan your trip during the Full Moon and skip out on trashy old Phuket and go straight to Koh Pagnagn. It’s more untouched and naturally beautiful minus the solicitors and ladyboys. Unless you want to go bungee jumping which is best to do in Phuket with the Jungle Bungy Jump team.

travel diaries

Tell us about the sights noone should miss out on So many sights to see. No one should miss Wat Pho temple in BKK which is home to the reclining Buddah. Make sure to plan the day out so after the visit you can take the boat to the Wat Arun temple across the river while watching the sunset. Another ‘sight’ not to be missed is the Full Moon party, in Haad Rin, Koh Pagnagn, and the Guy’s Bar, in Haad Tien, Koh Pagnagn. Guy’s bar an exclusive resort over the mountains next to Haad Rin Beach (where the full moon happens). Guy’s bar is this underground club that plays progressive and deep house and you have DJs who fly out from all over the world playing some amazing music. Be sure not to take the taxi boat like we did at 2am. It’s this banana boat that takes you from the beach into the deep sea and it’s the scariest and stupidest thing ever. Al though no one has ever died I don’t think we’re taking that chance again. Instead take the taxi (pickup truck) which takes 4x as long and they charge double but you don’t have to risk your life (as much). While in Koh Pagnagn also visit Wat Khao Tham, which is a temple and also a meditation center located at the top of one of the mountains. It is an amazing and relaxing retreat with a beautiful view. If you’re there in the first few 10 days of the month you can

sign up for the meditation classes. If staying in BKK make sure to stay near Khao San road. It’s filled with backpackers alike and you’ll run into some great people.

travel diaries

have vintage cameras like the twin-lens reflex Mamiyaflex made in the 1950s and super 8mm video cam’s along with old photos or collectors items like books, jewellery, stones and other great stuff. The market also has everything you want from sandals, tees, bag and really cool stuff you won’t find anywhere here. Imagine 10,000 stalls so in 6 lines I can’t even give you 5% of it.

Ready to blow your top? Take it easy! You need to find a constructive outlet for that emotional agitation as the week begins. Look to help on the home front (from a girl possibly? a woman?) to get you through this bumpy patch. Now is a great time to distract yourself with familial obligations and (as they say) doing the right thing. By Thursday, you'll be back to your outgoing, adventurous self, and others won't be able to get enough of you. Expect a couple days of inspired derring-do, with maybe a little romance, too. This weekend, relax that over-worked brain of yours -- take time out for something physical.

Don't hold back! You might have trouble revealing your feelings at times -- what with you being the strong, reliable type and all -- but you shouldn't hesitate to confide in friends as the week begins. They're more ready to help than you might imagine -- and asking for some friendly assistance will only strengthen those important bonds. On Thursday and Friday, make sure your tenacity isn't interpreted as stubbornness. Others could be looking for any stupid reason to start a fight, but you're better off taking the high road. This weekend, expect to get far with your easy-going charms.

Juggling a ridiculous number of details -- from shopping lists to guest lists to quarterly budgets -- is kind of your specialty. That's a good thing, because you'll need all your mental dexterity as the week begins. Avoid infighting over logistics and you'll manage to get an amazing amount done. You should get the big work out of the way by Thursday, and that means more time for fun. Look for chances to go out with like-minded friends -- especially if that involves long (but fun) coffee-shop conversations. This weekend, try to catch up with anyone you've left out of the loop (like your family maybe?) but be extra clear to avoid misunderstandings.

Expect to explode out of the gate as the week begins! You're full of ideas and energy right now, and others will look to you to set the pace. (Just be nice and try not to kick up too much dust as you're speeding ahead.) Your intuition should also prove spot-on the first few days of this week -- so set goals and be bold going after them. By Thursday, you'll get a hankering for something extravagant. Follow your impulses -- the bigger the better, even if you feel like you're getting a little silly. This weekend, make plans to connect with others.

The beginning of this week plays straight to your strengths -- you'll have no problem getting everything (and everyone!) organized and whipping your world into shape. Friends (and maybe even those who want to be more than friends) will gladly pitch in and give you a hand. By Thursday and Friday, you might start to feel overwhelmed by all the madcap action swirling around you, but just take a deep breath. if you can stay flexible, you can handle anything -- and maybe even help someone out in the process. This weekend, expect the extraordinary. Everyone will stand in awe of your energy and enthusiasm.

You might have a hard time sorting out fact from fiction as the week begins, but just try to be patient. A little duality -- think of it as poetic ambiguity, maybe -- can be a good thing sometimes, so long as you're willing to relax and just let things happen. By Thursday and Friday, others can't help but be drawn to your warmth and friendliness. Use your affable command of the situation to organize something fun (and let someone else worry about the details). This weekend, you're an especially good listener. Take time to talk with friends.

Set big, ambitious goals as the week begins, because you'll have no trouble getting exactly what you want -- provided you're willing to go after it. That sense of purpose and drive should also lead you into deep and rewarding conversations. By Thursday and Friday, you could find yourself coming into conflict, especially with someone in authority. Take special care not to step on anybody's toes -- unless, of course, a confrontation is what you're after right now. This weekend should bring fun opportunities for spending quality time with friends. Share a juicy secret, and you may get one in return.

Lost in thought? As the week begins, your head is up in the clouds again. (Is that where you get all your ingenious schemes and innovative ideas?) Use this burst of day-dreamy intuition to come up with something truly new -- and don't forget to include others in the big plan. By Thursday, all that creativity should crest into an overpowering wave. Ride that momentum into the weekend -- Thursday and Friday night see you at your confident, charismatic best, commanding the spotlight but generously sharing stage. This weekend, take advantage of some unusual (and unexpected) introversion to tend to more mundane matters, like bills and errands.

Don't count on smooth sailing as the week begins! You're in for some turbulent waters -- both mental and emotional -- and you'll need to keep your hands on the till if you hope to steer a steady course. Nautical metaphors continue to apply as the week progresses, but by Thursday and Friday your troubled voyage will become a lucky, luxury cruise. Everything will go your way (and everyone will love to be around you), and the only thing that could hold you back is a failure to be brave and take big risks. You'll be thankful for the weekend, when you settle back to a slower, less frenetic pace.

You're almost absurdly able to take care of everything as the week begins. Life will throw crazy new people and problems your way, but with your levelheaded patience you can handle each of them with ease (and even have some fun along the way). By Thursday or Friday, you might have a more difficult time juggling details and distractions, but just keep that trademark calm. If you overreact, you won't get anywhere. This weekend, make big plans and follow through with them. With just a little friendliness and footwork, you can get almost anything done on Saturday and Sunday.

you might get frustrated early in the week, because your easygoing charm and friendliness might not be quite enough to get people on your side. Others could overreact to situations in unexpected ways, and you'll have trouble smoothing things out and keeping the peace. Just try to let it go, though -- this is only a phase, and over-thinking won't help anyone. By Thursday and Friday, attitudes (both your own and others') could get turned upside down by extraordinary events. Who ever said a crazy experiment couldn't lead to crazy-good progress? Enjoy the fruits of sudden creativity! This weekend, look at least two or three times before you leap.

Get ready for something new as the week begins. Whether it's a new project or a new romantic prospect, creativity and novel experiences are the name of the game. Expect to be energized and elated by all the action. By Thursday and Friday, conflicts could start to crop up. The smart move is to mind your own business -- in any case, don't get suckered into anyone's ongoing drama. This weekend, find ways to help out the people close to you. That's one of your special strengths -- your unflappable compassion -- but you might need to overcome your need to have all the facts first to put it to good use.
