hree new cases of the coronavirus have been diagnosed in Pakistan, including islamabad’s first and second locally transmitted case in Karachi, on saturday, pushing the country’s tally to 31. a woman, who had recently arrived in the federal capital from the united states, was tested positive at Pakistan institute of Medical sciences (PiMs), the health facility’s spokesperson dr waseem Khawaja confirmed. the patient is in critical condition and has been put on ventilator, he added. Meanwhile, two new cases of coVid-19 have been diagnosed in sindh, pushing the provincial tally to 17. one patient recently returned from saudi arabia while the other patient’s father has a travel history of the united Kingdom and transmitted the virus to his young child, secretary health Zahid abbasi told chief Minister Murad ali shah during the meeting of coronavirus task force. the provincial health department has also

taken the samples of second patient’s father. both cases are from Karachi. sindh now has two locally transmitted cases of coVid-19, a mysterious pneumonia-like disease caused by the coronavirus, the chief minister was informed. “this is why i am continuously pursuing the matter to contain coronavirus,” he said and added that this was why he was banning all kinds of social, political and religious gatherings across sindh. the first patient, a 38-year-old man from the sindh capital, had arrived from saudi arabia a few days ago and was tested positive on saturday. two individuals tested positive earlier have recovered while 15 are currently being treated at different health facilities.

the government has said that it will participate in a video conference of the south asian association for regional cooperation (saarc) leadership to combat the coronavirus pandemic that has killed over 5,000 people globally. in a tweet posted late Friday night, the Foreign office (Fo) – while responding to a proposal by indian Prime Minister narendra Modi, calling for a “strong strategy” to combat coVid-19 – said that Pakistan “will be available to participate in the video conference of #saarc member countries on the issue”. “the threat of #coVid-19 requires coordinated efforts at [the] global and regional level. we have communicated that saPM on health will be available to participate in the video conference of #saarc member countries on the issue,” Fo spokesperson aisha

Govt seeks support of Opp’s South Punjab MPs for separate province g

Qureshi denies south Punjab secretariat will be established in bahawalPur ISLAMABAD staff report

Foreign Minister shah Mahmood Qureshi on saturday urged opposition parliamentarians from south Punjab to collaborate with the Pakistan tehreeki-insaf (Pti) government for the creation of a separate province. “you say you want a south Punjab province. if you truly want this, give us proof. join the government, don’t just make statements, step forward practically and assist us,” he said, adding: “take credit for it if you want, we are not opposed to that, but let us move forward [through political consencus].” on wednesday, Qureshi had announced that a bill will be tabled in the national assembly for the creation

of the south Punjab province. “Keeping in view the concept of devolution of power — and for the ease of people from the province — the decision to create a secretariat in the region has been taken,” Qureshi had said. addressing a press conference in Multan on saturday, the foreign minister said: “refrain from adopting the mindset that we will not do anything, nor allow anything to be done. only if the people of this area work together, can this move forward. “if we remain entangled [fighting] each other, we may be able to score

political points, but we will not be able to achieve our goal. now, the decision has to be made by the people and their elected representatives.” the foreign minister also clarified that claims of the secretariat being established in bahawalpur were false. “i am categorically saying that such a decision was not taken.” he said that the decision of where to establish the secretariat will be made by the south Punjab assembly. “Keeping in mind needs, merit and feasibility, it [the assembly] will make an informed decision. but in order to move forward, it has been decided to have one part of the secretariat in bahawalpur and one in Multan.”

Farooqui said. Farooqui’s response came hours after Prime Minister Modi extended his offer. “i would like to propose that the leadership of saarc nations chalk out a strong strategy to fight coronavirus. we could discuss, via video conferencing, ways to keep our citizens healthy. together, we can set an example to the world, and contribute to a healthier planet,” he had tweeted. Various media reports observed that Prime Minister Modi’s offer was unexpected given the fact that his government has tried to sideline the regional organisation on multiple occasions. the annual saarc meeting is in limbo for five years now due to india’s refusal to attend a meeting in Pakistan. according to the saarc charter, its member states should meet “once a year or more often as and when considered necessary by the members”.

the development is seen as significant as the two neighbours have little or no channels of communication for over a year now. however, it remains unclear how india would respond to Pakistan’s offer. earlier on thursday, the Fo spokesperson had also said Pakistan was “ready to cooperate and extend any assistance to its neighbours including india” to deal with the coronavirus. the number of coronavirus in Pakistan and india is low but there is a threat of a rise in the infected people. india already confirmed that two people died because of coronavirus while the number of cases in Pakistan rose to 28, though, no death has been reported yet. the world health organization (who) has declared coronavirus a pandemic and said it was “deeply concerned both by the alarming levels of spread and severity (of the virus) and by the alarming levels of inaction”.
