AkISTAN’s coronavirus cases surged past 70,000 on Sunday and death toll crossed 1,500 as the provinces and autonomous areas continued to report more cases and fatalities. Meanwhile, the number of people who have recovered from the virus in Pakistan has topped 25,000 after 1,140 additional recoveries were reported in the last 24 hours. Punjab reported 952 new cases of the novel coronavirus, taking the provincial tally to 25,056. The province also saw a record jump in the number of fatalities due to the virus, with 36 more deaths reported in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll in the province to 475. Sindh has reported 885 new coronavirus cases, taking the provincial total to 28,245. 16 more deaths were also reported in the last 24 hours, taking the fatalities in the province to 481.
Islamabad reported 226 new cases of the coronavirus, taking its total to 2,418, according to the government’s Covid-19 portal. Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) reported 18 new cases and Azad Jammu and kashmir (AJk) reported 17, taking their tallies to 678 and 251, respectively. The capital also reported four more deaths from the virus and GB has reported two fatalities. khyber Pakhtunkhwa (kP) reported 487 more cases of the novel coronavirus, taking the provincial tally to 10,027. 20 more deaths were reported

in the province, raising the death toll to 473. 106 new cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in Balochistan, taking the provincial tally to 4,193, according to the Balochistan health department. The province also recorded four “probable deaths” during the last 24 hours. Its number of confirmed deaths stands at 46. GOVT ADVISES PEOPLE TO WEAR MASKS: As the coronavirus cases continued to increase, the federal government advised the people to wear masks as a pre-
cautionary measure against the virus. Addressing a press conference in the federal capital, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza said that the country’s infection rate for coronavirus was on the rise with local transmission rate standing at 92 per cent. He said that cases are increasing as the disease is spreading, so is the importance of following standard operating procedures (SOPs). He added said 78 deaths had been reported in the past 24 hours, which was the highest single-day tally for Pakistan since the outbreak. He said that people “must” wear masks in public transports, including trains, buses and planes, mosques, shops, bazaars and malls. He further advised them to use their own “judgement” as well regarding wearing masks at home. “If you feel there are a lot of people, then you should wear a mask,” he added.

Govt slashes petrol price by Rs7 per litre g

In order to provide further relief to the consumers, the government reduced further the prices of petrol by Rs7.06 per litre, Finance Ministry said on Sunday. The petrol prices have been reduced from Rs81.58 per liter to Rs74.52 per liter, said a press statement issued by the ministry here, adding that the new prices would be applicable from June 1, 2020. likewise, the prices of kerosene Oil have been reduced from Rs47.44 per liter to Rs35.56 per liter whereas the prices of light Diesel Oil were reduced from Rs47.51 per liter to Rs38.14 per liter. However, the prices of HighSpeed Diesel witnessed a nominal increase of Rs0.05 as it went up from Rs80.10 per liter to Rs80.15 per liter. Despite the global trend of increasing prices of petroleum products, the government has decided to extend further relief in petroleum prices to the public, the statement added. World Bank pledges $188m to boost Pakistan’s disaster resilience ISLAMABAD staff report
The World Bank (WB) has agreed to join hands with Pakistan to support the latter’s disaster resilience and ecosystem restoration initiatives through more reliable and timely weather forecasting, improved disaster risk management services as well as help tackle growing environmental challenges, Climate Change Ministry’s Media Focal Person Muhammad Saleem said on Sunday. “The World Bank has conveyed its willingness to the government of Pakistan for providing funding support for an ambitious five-year U$188 million ‘Pakistan Hydromet and Ecosystem Restoration Services (PHERS)’ project, which would conclude during the financial year 202425,” he said while sharing details of the bilateral partnership. The Climate Change Ministry official further said that in this regard an agreement-signing ceremony has been scheduled to be held on June 1 in the climate change ministry, which would be led by the Prime Minister’s Advisor on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam and the World Bank’s Country Director for Pak-

Bangladesh, Sri lanka & Nepal are all 50 to 75 percent more expensive than us.” yesterday, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had recommended a reduction in petrol price by Rs7.06/litre, kerosene Rs11.88/litre and light diesel oil (lDO) price by Rs9.37/litre for June. The regulatory body had, however, suggested that the price of diesel should remain unchanged. For diesel, OGRA had recommended a Rs0.05/litre increase to Rs80.15/litre. It is worth mentioning that the government is charging 17% general sales tax (GST) on all petroleum products. Apart from it, the government is also collecting petroleum levy (Pl) on these products, which is directly taken from consumers.

Explaining about components and subcomponents of the project, the media focal person said that the project comprises two components, namely: ‘Hydro-meteorological and Climate Service’ and ‘Disaster Risk Management’. The first component has been further divided in the four sub-components, namely: Institutional Strengthening and Capacity Building, Modernization of the Observation Infrastructure; Data Management, and Forecasting Systems; Enhancing the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) Service Delivery and Building Partnerships with the Private Sector; and the last is the Project Management, Systems Integration and Monitoring and Implementation Support of PMD.
