he federal government has decided to reform the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) to make it efficient in countering the cartelisation in the sugar industry as well regulating it to thwart any kind of artificial food crisis in future. Addressing a press conference after the meeting of the federal cabinet, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan said that modern technology would be introduced in collection and maintenance of sugar industry data so that nobody could hoodwink the system in future. She said the prime minister warned that stern action would be taken against those found involved in hurling threats to the commission, adding that the government will deal strongly with the elements involved in profiteering after the release of forensic reports.

The PM’s aide said the present government for the first time since 2014 increased the price of sugarcane to protect the interests of the growers. Speaking about the proceedings of the cabinet, she said PM Imran assured the ministers that all necessary initiatives would be taken to protect the interests of farmers and ensure supply of edibles items to general public at affordable prices. Firdous said Special Assistant to the PM on Accountability Shahzad Akbar presented the inquiry report on flour and sugar crisis before the cabinet at the outset of meeting on the directives of the prime minister. She said Shahzad Akbar informed the cabinet that the concerned ministry had presented the report in the eCC meeting that there was about 2 million tones surplus sugar available in the country. She said that after bumper crop of the sugarcane, the mill owners pleaded that they were unable to purchase the same due to already available stock. In this situation the PM was briefed

that for saving the interest of the farmers, it was necessary to hold consultations with mill owners and take export-oriented initiative, she added. She said that the PM issued directives for resolution of the farmers problems; however, the federal government did not give any subsidy on the export of sugar. She said the cabinet was informed that in 2017, Suleman Shehbaz, son of former chief minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif, allegedly approached then prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, seeking Rs20bn for sugar export. Similarly during 2014-18, the Sindh government gave Rs20/kg subsidy on sugar to benefit the Omni Group. During the meeting, she said that the cabinet gave approval to the decisions of the committee on energy besides approving inclusion of 62 more districts in universal service fund to improve broadband service. She said that the cabinet approved proposals regarding revamping, reconstructing and reorganizing evacuee Trust Property Board and gave approval to utilization evacuee Trust Board land for welfare purposes, including health, education and housing sectors. Firdous said that Special Assistant on Social Protection Dr Sania Nishtar gave detailed briefing to the Cabinet on ehsaas emergency Cash Programme. She said that the cabinet was informed that the federal government was providing cash assistance worth Rs12,000 to over 12 million deserving families.

ISLAMABAD The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday directed the federal government to make functional quarantine centers in the country in one month and also sought a report in this regard. A five-member larger bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed and comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel, Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin Ahmed heard the case regarding the closure of hospitals due to the coronavirus. During the course of proceedings, the chief justice asked about the doctors, who were taken into custody by Balochistan police and taken to a police station in a van. The Additional Advocate General informed the court that all the doctors were released later. To a court query about their demands, the AAG responded that the provincial cabinet had approved the doctors’ demands. The chief justice directed the government to provide available protective kits and facilities to the doctors. he said the court had ob-
served that the doctors were protesting the non-provision of the protective kits. If the same were not provided to the doctors and medical staff, then their lives would be at risk, he added. he asked how much money the Balochistan government had received to combat the coronavirus. The AAG replied that the provincial government had received Rs 443 million and Rs 118 million of which had been spent so far. The Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) apprised the court that he had talked to Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on health Dr Zafar Mirza regarding the court ’s quer y about the closure of out-patient departments of hospitals, who wanted to give a briefing to the court on the steps taken by the government in the health sector. The government was taking steps to combat the virus, he added. he said the government had closed the OPDs as the people gathered there while the emergency departments were open to all types of patients. Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Tuesday said that every citizen of the country was important as the nation was striving to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Presiding over the 231st Corps Commanders’ Conference, the COAS said, “Being a nation with vibrant youth and resilient people ready to share and sacrifice, we will emerge stronger from this challenge, by the will of God.” The corps commanders participated through video link from their respective headquarters, an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release said. Appreciating the troops in the field for efforts so far, the COAS directed all commanders to extend maximum assistance in moving critical resources and reaching out to mitigate suffering of people in far flung areas, including Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), interior Sindh and Balochistan. The forum reviewed geo-strategic, regional and national security environment with particular emphasis on latest situation arising from COVID-19. The forum undertook comprehensive review of deployment of Pakistan Army troops assisting civil administration in aid of civil power across the country.
