The pressure we expected earlier can now be felt next month.” The premier said that the government was procuring ventilators and personal protective equipment to prepare for the situation. tor along with some other essential industries was allowed to reopen. he said that if levels of poverty in pakistan increased by the time it has defeated the coronavirus, the country will have lost the overall war. “our greatest challenge is to ensure that those suffering from economic distress right now do not fall further below the poverty line. Because if they do and our poverty rises by the time we have defeated this virus, we will have lost the war,” the premier remarked. The pm said during this month, they would not face any difficulty as the health facilities in the country could accommodate the most intensive care-related cases, but witnessing the global scenario, there were fears about an increase in cases during the next month. he also reiterated that not a single case was imported from china. The prime minister said the whole world was facing this “unfamiliar challenge”, as no government in the world was ever prepared to combat this pandemic. he said the command and control center was making calculation and analysis of the daily situation with the support and input by all the stakeholders. he also questioned the spreading of “fake news” regarding a higher number of coronavirus deaths than officially reported. he questioned whether people were suggesting the government was hiding deaths due to coronavirus.

The Sindh government on Saturday agreed to allow businesses to open on a rotational basis, provided that the traders operate in line with the standard operating procedures (Sops) issued in connection with the covid-19 lockdown. In a meeting with trade representatives, Sindh chief minister murad Ali Shah said that selected businesses would be allowed to operate on specific days, such that all related enterprises opened on same day. for example, electricians, air conditioner shops and those selling other electrical appliances would open on the same days. Similarly, tailors and embroiderers would work on days fixed for the textile and garments sector, he added. Shah also accepted the traders’ request to allow them to begin home delivery services, showing keen interest in scaling up online and on-call business activities. “This is the way to [go about] practicing social distancing,” he told the meeting participants. The cm constituted a committee comprising Sindh educa-

tion minister Saeed Ghani, Sindh energy minister Imtiaz Shaikh, Sindh excise and Taxation minister mukesh kumar chawla and Sindh Information and local Government minister Syed nasir hussain Shah to consult the traders and devise Sops for small businesses. The committee has been instructed to frame the guidelines and submit them to the cm for approval today (Sunday), as well as share the Sops with the federal government. on the traders’ plea, the cm also agreed to relax some taxes levied on them by the Sindh Revenue Board and the excise and taxation department, assuring them that he would also request the centre to advance soft, longterm loans for businessmen. Traders expressed appreciation for the cm for his support and cooperation to the business community and taking prompt action against the pandemic. GUIDELINES FOR BUSINESS: later, traders separately met the members of the committee formed to frame the Sops for businesses. following the meeting, Ghani told media persons that various issued were brought to the table during the meeting and traders

made multiple recommendations regarding guidelines for resuming businesses. Businesses activities have been classified into 13 sectors, he said, adding that the recommendations would be presented to the cm today (Sunday) and then a final report would be sent to prime minister Imran khan for approval. “The Sindh government wants to devise a uniform policy that could be implemented for all businesses across the country,” he said. Addressing media persons separately, the information minister made it clear that only those businesses would be allowed to function that would comply with the Sops being devised by the government completely and limit their services to home delivery. The minister warned that any trader found not to be abiding by the Sops would be restricted from working. “[Also] it is not possible for the Sindh government to allow all businesses to open at once,” he said, implying that this would lead to a resurgence of the virus. “They are to be resumed gradually, after the formulation of Sops,” the minister stressed.

day and Taraweeh during Ramzan will be offered under the open sky instead of in halls. worshippers have been encouraged to bring their own prayer mats and offer wuzu at home as well. everyone coming into the mosque has to wear a face mask. president Avi emphasised that worshippers must maintain a six-foot distance when praying. discussions after prayers, shaking hands and hugging has also been banned, he added. If due to unforeseeable circumstances the number of coronavirus cases increases in the country, the government has the right to revisit these orders, president Alvi said.
