the Group of 20 nations on wednesday announced a one-year debt relief for the world’s poorest nations as they struggle to financially cope with the coronavirus pandemic. the announcement comes as the global economy is plunged into the worst recession in a century. the G20, which brings together the world’s largest economies, also reiterated the pledge to deploy “all available policy tools” to deal with the health and economic crisis caused by CovId-19. with over two million cases and fatalities approaching 130,000 worldwide, many of the less developed countries are facing the heaviest burden since they do not have the spending power to deal with treatment and the economic fallout caused by widespread lockdowns of their economies imposed

opening of the construction sector by the federal government. the total number of infections in Pakistan crossed 6,200 amid 117 deaths and 1,446 recoveries. Punjab accounts for the most CovId19 infections, reporting 3,016 cases as of wednesday evening. Sindh, balochistan, and khyber Pakhtunkhwa have so far reached 1,668, 281, and 912 cases, respectively. Islamabad has 140 cases, Gilgit-baltistan has 234 cases whereas Azad kashmir has 46 cases so far. “In light of recent numbers, there may be a need for stricter implementation of the lockdown in the coming days. we have told the federal government about imposing strict measures,” he said. “we cannot understand the need to open the construction sector at the moment,” Shah said, referring to Prime Minister Imran khan’s decision in this regard. “on the prime minister’s directives, the provincial governments will open construction sites after ensuring SoPs are being followed,” he said. he said a stigma about the coronavirus is developing in the country, due to which at least 15 to 20 more people could have died of it, but we don’t have them on record because many families are burying their dead without informing the authorities.

Prime Minister Imran khan has chided his Special Assistant on health dr Zafar Mirza over exhibiting “non-serious behaviour” before the Supreme Court (SC). the premier’s reaction came after Mirza appeared before the top court that had taken a suo motu notice over the measures taken by the government to contain the coronavirus pandemic in the country. later, the premier took notice of the remarks given by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed and scolded dr Mirza in the federal cabinet meeting tuesday over not providing satisfactory answers to the top court. the PM said the federal government has always respected judiciary and honourable judges and no tolerance will be made over showing irresponsible attitude. reports said that PM khan said it was Mirza’s responsibility to present a comprehensive report before the top court regarding the measures adopted to fight coronavirus. It is pertinent to mention here

that the apex court, while hearing a suo motu case on April 13 related to the situation arising out of the coronavirus crisis, had expressed displeasure over the performance of dr Zafar Mirza in dealing with coronavirus pandemic and ordered the government to remove him. Meanwhile, a petition is likely to be filed in the Supreme Court under Article 184(3) on thursday that challenges the appointment of 19 special assistants to the prime minister. the federal government and all PM’s appointed advisors and special assistants have been made respondents in the case. According to the draft petition quoted by a local media outlet, it argues that the appointments were against the constitution and that rule 4(6) of the rules of business, 1973 was against the constitution. “the federal government has no authority to appoint any unelected person as advisers and SAPMs [special advisers to the prime minister] with the status of federal Minister and Minister of State,” the petition maintains. the petitioners call for the apex court to declare that respondents no 6-24 were not en-

titled to any financial benefits, including salaries, allowances, perks, and privileges. “the respondents no 6-24 may kindly be directed to surrender all the salaries and other perks and privileges obtained from the date of assuming of office till their removal,” the petition further maintains. It also contends that under Article 1 of the constitution, affairs of the state are to be run in accordance with the provision of the Constitution of the Islamic republic of Pakistan. the petition cites Article 90, which states that “the cabinet under Article 91 consisting of PM as its head and the federal Minister and Ministers of State under Article 92 helped by the advisers under Article 93 having the Advice of Attorney General under Article 100 of the Constitution of Islamic republic of Pakistan for the exercise of the executive Authority of the federation under the rules of business 1973, made under Article 99 thereof and any other post or office or office unless provided under the Constitution or law etc is illegal, void ab initio, ultra vires the Constitution and corm non-judice.”

to contain the virus. the G20 finance ministers and central bankers endorsed “a timebound suspension of debt service payments for the poorest countries,” and in the communique following their virtual meeting, said “All bilateral official creditors will participate in this initiative.” Saudi finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan, who currently chairs the group, said this means “poor countries don´t need to worry about repaying over the course of the next 12 months.” the initiative will “provide north of $20 billion of immediate liquidity” for poor countries to use “for their health system and support their people facing CovId-19,” he said in a press briefing. the G20 officials “put our money where our mouth is, and commit to further support the world as it faces this pandemic,” he said.
