ISLAMABAD: Engineers and troops cleared a key highway Thursday that will enable aid workers to speed supplies to survivors of devastating floods that have left thousands homeless and killed 1,486 people. Traffic between the flood-hit city of Quetta and Sindh remained suspended for weeks after floods damaged the highway. As they reopened the route, engineers in flood-hit Balochistan also restored the power supply for millions, according to a government statement. And the disaster’s death toll became more clear. On Thursday, the United Nations’ children agency (UNICEF) said 528 children were among those killed in the floods. Pakistan scrambled to deliver aid to those most in need as the death toll from record-breaking floods in the nation rose further, with no respite in sight from the unprecedented monsoon rains. The rains started early this year in mid-June and swept away entire villages, bridges and roads, leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. At one point, a third of the country’s territory was inundated with water. Authorities said the overall death toll reached 1,486 on Thursday, with five more people dying in rainrelated floods in the past 24 hours, with the majority of those deaths in the hard-hit province of Sindh. experts have said that climate change has been blamed in large part for the deluge, the worst in recent memory. Sherry Rehman, the nation’s minister for climate change, warned that the rains, which had abated late last month only to restart this week, are predicted to continue lashing much of the country in the coming weeks. Rehman also expressed fears the downpours would hamper ongoing rescue and relief operations in flood-hit areas, where swirling deluges from overflowing rivers, fast melting glaciers and floods have already affected 33 million people. So far, rescuers have evacuated 179,281 people from flood-hit areas. It will take up to six months to drain water in flood-hit areas, officials say. Waterborne diseases have already sickened thousands of people in flood-stricken areas — and now there are fears of mosquito-borne dengue fever. Mosquitos have spread, due to stagnant waters following the flooding. “With 584,246 people in camps throughout the country, (the) health crisis could wreak havoc,” Rehman said in a statement. She added that so far, Karachi has registered an outbreak of dengue fever. The floods have also destroyed crops, including 70 percent of the onion harvest, along with rice and corn, Rehman said.

HE remarks by PML(N) leader and Federal Minister Javed Latif accusing PTI chief Imran Khan of “attacking the basic principles of Islam” and thus calling into question the former PM’s identity as a Muslim are highly provocative, divisive and condemnable. what is more, these can lead to attacks on an already persecuted religious minority. The PML(N) has presumably decided to play the religious card after losing Punjab, its erstwhile stronghold, to the PTI and fearing defeat in the forthcoming by-elections also. It is ironical that a party which was itself a target of religious bigotry a few years back should succumb to using the religious card against the PTI. Unless the statement is denounced by the PML(N)’s topmost leadership, it would tarnish the party’s image and continue to haunt it for years to come.
Pakistan has received further evidence that it can follow modern security protocols when visited by a foreign team. This may well provide reassurance to the visiting team, that the extreme danger of the Sri Lankan attack will not be repeated; when the bus driver was all that stood between the Sri Lankan team and afurther terrorist attack after the initial attempt. However, the complete shutdown of the city does not endear the game to the public, which experiences a major inconvenience. The irony is that many of those stuck in traffic are fans trying to get home to watch the match on television.
That Empire reached its full glory under Victoria. The celebration of her diamond Jubilee, in 1897, was actually a celebration of the Empire. and perhaps the best symbol, remembered even today, was the culmination of that celebration, the great naval review of Spithead, at which the naval might of the Empire was on display. There were two lines of ships seven miles long, formed by 170 ships, including 50 battleships. after all, a huge navy was needed to cover an empire including about a quarter of the world’s surface. In contrast, Elizabeth’s 2002 Golden Jubilee Fleet review was cancelled because of the cost, and there was no talk of reviews after that.
Elizabeth II did not see the end of the Empire; her father did, for George VI proved to be the last Emperor of India, when it became independent in 1947. That year was memorable for Elizabeth for another reason: she got married in July, while India became independent in august. when her father died in January 1952, she became Queen of Pakistan, a title she retained until 1956, when it became a republic.

Unfortunately former Mr Khan too has all along weaponized religion to defeat political opponents. He says he wants to make Pakistan a welfare state. His reference to the 7th century state of Madina comprising a few thousand citizens, with primitively simple requirements, is out of place and meant to provide a religious flavour to power politics. Mr Khan has even taken the stand that those supporting his opponents would be violating Islamic injunctions. Soon after losing power he told his supporters to take his message to the people as the Companions of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) carried his message. In an inappropriate comparison, Mr Khan said that in the days of the holy Prophet (PBUH) also the youth embraced Islam while the older generation opposed it. He has profusely used Quranic verses to justify his political line of action which is yet another example of giving an Islamic touch to ventures aimed at gaining power. during the last two decades Pakistan has lost over 80,000 innocent lives to religious extremism taking the form of terrorist attacks. There is a need on the part of political leadership to display maturity and avoid the dangerous policy of using religion for gaining political mileage in their bid for political office. There is a dire need to revert to the Quaid-e-azaqm’s advice of keeping religion and politics apart in Pakistan. as he put it in his landmark address to the Constituent assembly of Pakistan on 11 august 1947, ” You may belong to any religion or caste or creed, that has nothing to do with the business of the State.”

HE death of Queen Elizabeth II marks the end of an era, just as that of Queen Victoria in 1901 of her ancestress Victoria marked that of another. She had many affinities to Victoria, one of them being that she was the only British monarch to reign longer. whereas Victoria reigned for 64 years, Elizabeth reigned for 70. She came close to breaking the record set by Louis XIV of France of 72 years, for the longest reign in history. That record, by the way, was set because Louis succeeded at the age of five, and died at 77. Elizabeth was 96 when she died.

It is perhaps a coincidence that both Queens began the reigns under Prime Ministers who were old men; Victoria’s first PM was Lord Melbourne, who was 58. The USa’s main opponent in these newly independent states was the USSr, and the UK was reduced from the metropolitan power to the sidekick of one of the two main competitors for dominance in the world. The USSr has given way to China, but the USa remains, and the UK remains its sidekick.
Elizabeth learned of her father’s death in Kenya, and it was africa that proved to be the focus of the earlier part of her reign, as Britain carried out the decolonization exercise of the 1950s and 1960s. This was not any sort of recognition of the need to end the empire, or any sort of acknowledgement of the evils of colonialism, but a realization that the UK could simply not hold on. The exhaustion caused by world war II was a major reason. The rise of the USa was also instrumental, as ir allowed the UK to make way for its reduced role.
Even though it has been loyal in both the Cold war and the war on Terror, iit has not got much of a reward. at the end of the decolonization process, the Empire was reduced to a Commonwealth. That had little value, as it did not stop the former British colonies looking increasingly away from the UK, and towards the USa.

Fivestar services can be provided by the concerned hotels acting as catering providers. The police and the military would not have to provide security through several miles of a crowded city, but only a few dozen yards within the same compound. However, that is for the future. Meanwhile, the country wants to sit back and enjoy the game.

Not only was she head of the Commonwealth,, she was the Queen of 15 of its 56 members, with them all now reconsidering whether to retain Charles as monarch. apart from various Caribbean and Pacific islands, there are such states as Canada and australia. King Farooq of Egypt, that country’s last King was overthrown by the Free Officers (of the army) led by General Naguib and Colonel Gamal abdel Nasser in 1952. He went into exile in Europe, mostly Italy. He was something of a comic-opera figure, being immensely fat and also very tall, dressed alwaysin suits surmounted by a Turkish fez, as a tribute to his Egyptian origin. while in exile, he said, “all kings will be thrown off their thrones. In the end there will be only five kings left; the King of England, and the four kings in the deck of cards.”Itshould not be forgotten that Egypt had been under British and French rule for a lengthy period which included the early years of his reign. He had also seen the proliferation of arab kings after his father Fuad I had declared himself King in 1920, when the break-up of the Ottoman Empire had led to Kings being declared in Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi arabia and Bahrain. also, it was at that time that Egypt declared itself independent. when Farouk made his statement, England had just got a queen. It has been 70 years before it has got a king. Indeed it seems that the King of England has no more power than the kings in a deck of cards. Charles has waited all his life to inherit a position of pomp, but no power.
wadar, the hub of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has been the centre of attention for last few years, in particular for the interests of China vested upon the port city to reach the Strait of Hormuz, containing two-thirds of the world’s oil reserves and as per estimations seventeen billion of crude oil journey every day from the point at the mouth of Gwadar port of Balochistan (Pakistan) and Chah Bahar port of Balochistan (Iran).
In his reign too, Gwadar has not got anything at ground level. The people keep looking for promises and witness them get crushed or lost amidst the heavy dust of time, but they keep hoping. They want the fundamentals of living and nothing more. However, it is yet not late if the government-in-rule realizes and fixes the issues of the residents. Gwadar was, in fact, always shown developed in the screens, but there was actually never a prosperous Gwadar. It is yet to be seen how the present government deals with the advancement of the port city.

There is a view, held in those republican circles, that the Queen was head of the ‘establishment’, a loosely defined group which ruled England, ruled the world when the UK had an Empire, and now ruled the UK again. She had inherited a dissolving Empire, and her son has succeeded to much less than she did, when he became heir apparent.

In-between all these, the Baloch population of Gwadar vociferate for basic amenities including water, bar on drugs, business allowance to supply oil and edible materials in the neighbouring Iran, ban on trawlers coming from either China or Sindh, fishing in deep water and educational rights. However, the government keeps visiting the city frequently to make ‘false promises’ and leave. But the people get nothing practical other than miseries and unending and openendedwhilewaiting.speaking to the locals, they complain of various worries, including their concerns about the posts generated from the CPEC which, they say, are given to people with domiciles of Punjab, Sindh and Khayber Pakhtunkhwa and not the Baloch population living there. “Instead, we are asked to sell our properties for a higher amount,” said rafiq Baloch, a resident of Gwadar’s New Town. “But who can make it clear to them where we will go once we sell out our land of rafiq’sancestors?”concerns are not invalid. People have beenliving here for ages and, when their own land is taken from them, where will they go? what sickens him, and the rest of his community, is that they see trawlers, that too of outsiders, fishing deep in the sea. Not only do these trawlers fish in their sea but commit the genocide of the fishes with their trawlers ending the roots of fishes for the near future. “we fear the day when all the races of fishes are killed by them.” rafiq and his fellows are afraid of the future of fishing.

Imran Khan in 2018 claimed that his ‘Naya Pakistan’s’ development would begin from Gwadar, but during his time in power (2018 till 2022) Gwadar was deprived of every facility which it owned prior to his government. In fact, the sole stadium, which was the talk of the world cricket, was snatched from the locals because it got international notice. as per the current situation, the Pakistani government is going to utilize the cricket ground as a tourist place and seize the right of local players to play any more in theTheground.present NdM-led government’s prime minister, Shehbaz Sharif, too, had plenty of visits to the port city during the last few months. In a series of tweets after his visits, he criticised the PTI government for overlooking Gwadar despite presence of ample funds. He further said, “Time for presentations is over. Time for action is now. Gwadar is not just about infrastructure development; being part of CPEC, it has political, economic and strategic values. Turning Balochistan’s backwardness into prosperity is our collective responsibility and my mission.”

Hard times often call for adapting to painful realities, which is necessary to survive in challenging times. The alteration in our individual choices and living standards, as described above, can keep us afloat in the current crushing economic situation.
Second, it is generally observed that electrical appliances, like air conditioners (aCs), lights etc., remain switched on unnecessarily while leaving a room or an office, which costs a significant amount in an electricity bill, especially after the recent hike in electricity tariffs. Thus, it is required to develop a habit of switching off the appliances when they are not needed and minimize usage by limiting consumption to a bare minimum required in these challenging times.
THE exponential surge in essential commodities and fuel prices, mainly driven by the global economic meltdown, is predicted to stay here for at least a few months. The public outcry and protests against the fuel prices hike, calling for the reversal of the decision, are understandable; however, they have negligible chances of forcing the government to reconsider its decision, given its compulsions to appease the IMF (International Monetary Fund) to secure loans. The dire economic situation calls for taking drastic austerity measures at an individual level to survive the severe economic shocks.

For several decades women have been forced to conventional responsibilities such as taking care of their children, the primary caregiver with the majority of their time spent on domestic activities for a home, child birth and child raising. In societies these roles were previously considered acceptable norms. However, as the struggle for gender equality, freedom of speech and autonomous decision making evolves, over time increasing number of women can be seen in the labour market. Those women who participate in the labour force are capable of freely empowering themselves, financially assisting their families and contributing to poverty alleviation and the larger socioeconomic domain. In contrast, low female labourforce participation might be considered a failure to promote gender equality and women empowerment. The scenario becomes more complex when motherhood and female labour force participation are Motherhoodconsidered.hasphysiological as well as sociological aspects which should be recognised in the workplace because mothers are a significant population that contributes to the economy. women who are parenting a child while actively engaging in the labour field encounter a variety of problems, including workplace gender discrimination, inflexible work schedules, and a lack of childcare assistance. To address the challenges faced by working mothers, greater efforts are required in modern society. as a result, it is necessary to understand the association between motherhood and labour force participation. This knowledge would lead to improved policy, economic growth and decisions about expanding or sustaining female work force participation.

VErY woman can play a vital role in the development of a country by participating in the labour force. In our society gender inequality is considered a major social problem. when it comes to working mothers, the situation becomes worse.
In short, women who are termed ‘domestic finance ministers’ are the most underprivileged group in society in terms of service provision. Even though she is able to work outside the home, the dual nature of her obligations at home, which include household duties as well as mothering, puts her in a far more miserable condition.

Pakistan has a comparatively low labour force participation rate because of the smaller number of women in the labour market. Therefore, this is a critical issue for the development of Pakistan.women face social and cultural barriers to mobility and integration in the workplace as well as a stratified labour market, a lack of skills and employer gender preconceptions or stereotypes that gives less value to female labour because of their family obligations and responsibilities.

The authorities concerned should take note of the matter and stop this campaign in favour of branded oil manufacturers. Today, they are asking the shopkeepers to stop selling loose oil, tomorrow they may ask milksellers to stop selling fresh, loose milk, forcing the people to buy branded packaged milk. will that make sense? If the authorities really want to stop something, they should, instead, focus on banning the sale of liquor and drugs that are playing with the future of our generations.
First, people commuting to offices on their private vehicles can opt for carpooling or take public transport that, in addition to taking thousands of cars off the road, thus reducing hefty oil import bills owing to less fuel demand, provide an economical alternative.

IT is nice to hear our leaders every now and then talking about the need to ‘learn to live within our means’, but at the same time they celebrate loans, commitments, pledges and donations from just about anywhere and everywhere. There is also the element of dollars flying out of the country under one head or the other. It is the net inflow of external finances that affects the currency exchange rate. Let’s hope we will be able to strike the balance in the future.
we belong to the Hindu community and use loose oil available for rs100 per litre. we use it to light clay lamps in our temples and at our homes in line with our religious practices. Branded oil in packs is expensive and we use it only for cooking purposes.
It is a worrying situation and the moment has arrived to investigate why female education is so low. Education is important for the development of societies and only educated females understand their basic rights, since education allows women to make decisions about labour force participation
Motherhood responsibilities with work progression can be challenging since it comprises a wide range of responsibilities, such as going to meetings, caregiving, managing children’s assignments, carrying and receiving children from school. a mother’s schedule must be flexible in order to fulfil all of her duties. However, gender role dispute is most likely to occur since the formal sector’s rigid structure hinders a mother’s capacity to execute her motherhood tasks and vice versa, and which can lead to some mothers leaving or considering leaving their jobs. Several studies show that there has been an increasing tendency of mothers leaving the job market during child care years all over the world, particularly in the USa. This finding raises several questions: should this be the case in our current age, when there is continual promotion of female child education, women empowerment, gender equality and women ascending to greater levels of decision-making authority in the official sector? Should women have to choose between motherhood and career? are women being educated to devote so much time in school, get a good profession and then resign because they need to have and raise children? work-family experience as well as linked motherhood prac-
POLICE have been raiding shops selling loose oil in areas inhabited by people belonging to the poor segments of society. The shopkeepers are being forced to sell branded oil even though the manufacturers do not market half-litre packs of their products. People are forced to buy one-litre packs that cost rs600 or more.
Nonetheless, despite being an Islamic republic and democratic nation, Pakistan ranks low in terms of gender equality not only in comparison to other developing countries but also in comparison to South asian countries where gender gaps are thought to be the greatest. Unfortunately, the condition of women further worsens when this disadvantaged group enters the labour force to gain some status and control. Insufficient education and a high reproductive burden on women have a detrimental impact on labour force participation. as a result, women in our society are obliged to stay at home and give birth and raise their children.
THErE is some evidence locally available that foreign currency is being smuggled to afghanistan as dealers there pay much better return in the open market. In order to gain maximum financial benefit, unregistered currency exchange dealers here are busy in purchasing foreign currency on a much higher price compared to the bank rate, and then they move it to afghanistan through some secure sources for financial benefits. This is one of the big reasons affecting our own foreign currency reserves and the pressure on the rupee.
Pakistan differs depending on their geographical area and social class. women from metropolitan regions and the upper classes are in a better position since they have more chances for further education and pursuing professional jobs. due to constant motherhood almost 75 percent of the female population that belong to rural areas suffer poor health. as a result of discrimination at legal, social and cultural level all Pakistani women remain structurally underprivileged and inferior.
This way, not only all transactions will be monitored and documented, it will also accommodate both exporters and importers to quickly execute goods and transactional activities. adopting such practices will also be a step forward towards a documented economy in a more secure and efficient manner.
Third, buying essential commodities eats away a significant chunk of a household budget; its impact, especially in these testing times, can be partially offset by growing vegetables at home, which will provide a cushion to spend the amount saved in this way on other essentials.

In the present financial crisis, this grave issue needs to be tackled on a priority basis. The Federal Investigation agency (FIa) should take proper action in consultation with the local community along with police and other intelligence agencies to sort out the parties involved in such a huge crime. If we succeed in stopping this smuggling, I am sure almost 30-40 per cent reserves will remain documented; otherwise we will continue to suffer.

It is also fair to remember that elizabeth herself was the last imperial British monarch and that her reign saw unprecedented decolonisation in Africa. In her time, the empire, forged through force, became the Commonwealth, an organisation to which membership is voluntary and that has enabled the UK to maintain global influence way beyond its size as a nation. If elizabeth can hardly take credit for the dismantling of the British empire, she also cannot be accused of building it.

but not sufficient. Through a combination of concrete actions and free and open discourse, leaders in religion, academia, sports, and politics must demonstrate that people who differ from them – ethnically, racially, or religiously – should not be treated with less respect than anyone else. International, nongovernmental groups increasingly are making this case persuasively. The Muslim World League (MWL) has provided both aid and moral leadership. The 2019 Charter of Makkah, which was conceived and shepherded by MWL, laid out a set of principles supporting religious and cultural diversity while condemning extremism. The adoption of the declaration represented the first time in history that Islamic scholars from different sects reached consensus on such a crucial set of contemporary issues.
T’S too early to contemplate disappointment, just days after President William Ruto’s inauguration. Celebrations are still rife, but the reality of the tough times ahead is dawning. As President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance has pledged, one of its immediate tasks is to lower food prices. The Uhuru Kenyatta administration had, in its final days, toyed around with a subsidy that reduced the price of the staple maize flour from Sh230 to Sh100 per twokilogramme packet. But it came at a huge cost to the exchequer and was quietly withdrawn, to the people’s chagrin. Many had hoped that the Ruto government would immediately restore the pocket-friendly unga. The unga subsidy gobbled up Sh7 billion in a

persecution. Myanmar’s security forces systematically attacked the Rohingya for many years causing four separate exoduses of Rohingya to Bangladesh since 1978. The U.S. and the United Nations have declared Myanmar’s actions to be genocide. Nearly a million Rohingya refugees have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar region. Bangladesh’s welcoming response to the influx of refugees serves as a shining example of positive and effective leadership in the face of an ever-growing humanitarian crisis. From the beginning, Bangladesh has provided Rohingya refugees with food, education, housing, and medicine. It has been a beacon of tolerance and compassion in the face of the opposite of both.

S news broke about the U.S. drone strike that killed al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri in Kabul, media outlets reported on every facet of the operation from its detailed planning to its surgical precision. But most experts overlooked a vital issue: the religious intolerance and extremism that fueled al-Zawahri.hereis the sad fact: Although the U.S. struck a blow against religious extremism by killing al-Zawahri, fanaticism still festers in many parts of the world. With sad and increasing frequency, misguided radicalized individuals have attacked innocent bystanders, worshipers, and faith-based institutions in the name of religion. Political leaders quickly, and correctly, label these attacks as terrorism. But more must be done.
For Kaunda and Mandela in particular, their conception and practice of political leadership were rooted in the ethos of ubuntu, which recognises other people’s humanity. For them, even if the queen represented a monarchy with a problematic past, they determined that the most effective and sustainable response to that murky history was not to harbour resentment or hate. It was to foster love, forgiveness, reconciliation and shared understanding. Their engagement with the queen projected a kind of African agency that recognises the dignity of all human beings.

Under Mirziyoyev, Uzbekistan—a country of 35 million, the largest by population in Central Asia with far fewer resources than other countries in the region—has transitioned from a post-Soviet autocracy to a pre-democratic state engaged in a careful but risky reform strategy. Particularly noteworthy have been his moves to open up public space for religion in civil society and extension of an olive branch out to Islamist extremists interested in returning to the national mainstream. This strategy is being tested since the Taliban’s return to power in neighboring Afghanistan last year, though Tashkent has maintained a pragmatic approach to dealing with the Taliban. On a broader scale, Mirziyoyev is engaged in a difficult balancing act between instituting political reforms and safeguarding regime stability via changes to the constitution, especially after securing a second presidential term.

The effort to combat religious extremism must be global. Religious intolerance is not limited to any single country, region, or faith. In the U.S., for example, antisemitic attacks reached a record high in 2021. Nobody can forget the 11 Jews who were slain in a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018. The terrorist responsible for this attack made clear he “wanted all Jews to die.” Muslims, too, face rising threats of violent attacks in the U.S. and elsewhere. In the last two years, Muslims and their houses of worship have been attacked in Washington State, Michigan, and Georgia. In Germany, between 2020 and 2021, there were more than 140 attacks on mosques and Muslims.

ANy Africans’ largely unsympathetic reaction to the death of Queen elizabeth II has come as a surprise to the average British person. This is hardly surprising. Given the passage of time and the queen’s age, most British people either do not associate her with the British empire, do not know much about the negative side of it or, if they do, see it as belonging to the distant past. Overall, they tend to see her — and themselves — as innocent.

Life is going to get tougher as the new administration is sceptical about the costly fuel and food subsidies.Kenyans should expect higher fuel prices of over Sh200 per litre, with a ripple effect on the cost of other goods and services. With most households unable to afford food, this calls for urgent government intervention. The government must find ways and means, including tax breaks and other incentives, to lower the cost of living. It can do this by reviving the food and fuel subsidy in the short term so as to reduce the prices of essential commodities before the long-term plan takes effect.

Uzbekistan’s choices remain highly limited when the United States and the broader West do not have much of a presence in the heart of eurasia. Washington and its allies must realize that Uzbekistan, which borders all the other four Central Asian neighbors, is the pivot of the region. Simply put, it is subject to varying centripetal forces. China and Russia have no interest in its reform efforts; in fact, they would prefer not to see the country make progress on that front. If the United States is to ensure that Uzbekistan has a soft landing in its reform and development journey and becomes a trusted partner, then it must help the Uzbek state and society build resilience and pursue a robust and independent multilateral foreign policy.

Complicating these domestic changes is the fact that the Uzbeks are having to pursue them at a time of great geopolitical upheaval in their strategic environment. This would explain why Tashkent has been keen on assuming a leadership role in regional and international affairs. Taking on a lead role in the SCO is a way for the Uzbeks to continue the cautious path towards political and economic transformation while living in a neighborhood influenced by anti-democratic powers such as Russia and China.
Many Africans see things very differently. This is not to do with elizabeth as a person but rather with the institution of the British monarchy and the atrocities committed in its name. here, we see the continent’s complex relationship with the monarchy and the queen, one that recognises her association with a problematic colonial legacy but also as a global “celebrity”. In her role as a “British celebrity”, the queen has been used as a tool to legitimise the United Kingdom’s interests in former colonies and to build the country’s “soft” global power. This has had the effect of masking and deflecting the brutal legacy and atrocities of British colonialism.

Situated at the crossroads of eurasia, Uzbekistan is trying to navigate amidst great power competition, a strategic environment in extreme flux while the country is going through a crucial period in its own social, political, and economic development. It is important to appreciate the major strides that the Central Asian nation has made, especially in the last six years. Much work remains to be done in the U.S., Myanmar and elsewhere in the world. The Makkah Declaration and the Declaration of Common human values provide a bright, guiding light. The brutal attack in Afghanistan reminds us that the world should follow it.

Former International Cricket Council’s (ICC) elite panel umpire from Pakistan Asad Rauf has died at the age of 66 after suffering a cardiac arrest in Lahore, ESPNcricinfo reported Thursday. Rauf had a substantial first-class career as a middle-order batter before he turned to umpiring, appearing for National Bank and Railways, averaging 28.76 from 71 firstclass matches, the publication stated. In his career as an umpire, Rauf officiated 64 Tests, 49 of which as on-field umpire and 15 as TV umpire, 139 ODIs and 28 T20Is. The former match official was one of the most prominent names in the mid-2000 when it comes to the umpires. He was on the ICC’s ODI panel since 2004 and was elevated to the ICC’s elite panel in 2006, just a year after he debuted officiating a Test match. Along with Naeem Dar, Rauf was among those who contributed to improve the reputation of Pakistani umpires prior to the neutral umpires era. However, his career ended abruptly in 2013 when the Mumbai Police named Rauf as a “wanted to be accused” in a probe into a spot-fixing controversy in Indian Premier League (IPL) where he had been officiating the matches. Though Rauf left India before that edition of Indian league cricket ended, but he was ruled out from the Champions Trophy tournament that came soon after. Later that year, ICC dropped Rauf from its elite panel, despite insisting his name coming up in the criminal investigations wasn’t the reason behind his termination. The former umpire claimed innocence throughout this time and expressed willingness to cooperate with the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit. This was followed with The Board of Control for Cricket in India banning Rauf for five years in 2016 for alleged corruption and misconduct.
