EDERAL government on Monday notified a six-member committee comprising members from the FIA, Intelligence Bureau (IB) and ISI to help probe a negative campaign being launched post helicopter crash in Lasbela that saw martyrdom of six Pakistan Army officials including Lieutenant General Sarfraz Ali. According to the notification, the sixmember committee formed to probe the negative campaign would be led by Additional Director General (DG) of FIA cybercrime unit Muhammad Jaffar.
The members included Lieutenant Colonel Saad from ISI, Deputy Director IB Waqar Nisar, Director FIA Waqaruddin Syed, deputy director Ayaz and Imran Haider. The committee will identify those who launched the negative campaign on social media and arrest them and launch legal proceedings against them. The Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) has condemned negative propaganda over social media after the Helicopter crash in Lasbela leaving five Army officers martyred. A statement issued by ISPR said that the propaganda hurt the sentiments of the families of the martyrs. Pakistan Army’s ranks and files have expressed
severe displeasure over the negative propaganda, ISPR said. They added that the nation stands with the Pakistan Army in this difficult time. The negative callous propaganda is unbearable and condemnable, they added. The wreckage of an unfortunate Army helicopter that went missing during a relief and rescue operation in the flood-hit Balochistan area has been found in Musa Goth, Winder, Lasbela. DG ISPR Major General Babar Iftikhar confirmed the news that all the six officers and soldiers including Corps Commander Southern Command, Lt General Sarfraz Ali embraced martyrdom.

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has warned the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of “dire consequences” if its workers disrupted law and order or resorted to violence during the party’s August 13 rally in Islamabad. Addressing a press conference in Faisalabad on Monday, Sanaullah said it was the constitutional right of PTI workers to stage peaceful protests but added that the government would deal with them with an iron fist “if they use violence or tried to blackmail the government”. He also reminded the PTI of a crackdown on its workers and leaders during May 25 Islamabad long march, saying this time around con-
sequences will be “grave”. The PTI last week announced to hold a rally in Islamabad’s Parade
Ground on the eve of Independence Day in which former prime minister and party chief Imran Khan would announce the next plan of action to deal against the coalition government led by PML-N. The interior minister also accused the Imran-led party of running a malicious campaign on social media following the helicopter crash in which six army officers, including Quetta Corps Commander Lt General Sarfraz Ali embraced martyrdom during a flood relief operation in Balochistan. “Entire nation stands by the martyrs of the Pakistan Army, I salute all the martyrs, those who spread negative propaganda against the army are misguided and such dirty campaigners have been identified,” he
remarked His statement came as the Inter Services-Intelligence (ISI) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) officers on Monday joined the team investigating the hate campaign on social media against the martyrs in Balochistan’s Lasbela helicopter crash. Sanaullah said that Imran was dividing the nation and misleading the youth and the entire nation by spreading negative propaganda. He said the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) verdict in the PTI prohibited funding case had proved that Imran was a “foreign agent”. “After the ECP verdict, his mental health has been affected… if he is not stopped he will lead the nation to any catastrophe,” he added.
Ashura to be marked with religious reverence, solemnity today LAHORE/KARACHI/ISLAMABAD Staff RepoRt
Millions of Shi’ite Muslims will perform mourning rituals on Tuesday to mark Ashura, the holiest festival in their calendar, amid heightened measures in many places across the country. Ashura falls on the 10th day of the lunar calendar month of Muharram and commemorates the martyrdom in 680 AD of Imam Hussain Ibn Ali (R.A.), a grandson of Prophet Mohammad (P.B.U.H.), near Karbala in what is now Iraq. Shi’ites mark the festival with large public rituals, sometimes involving bloody self-flagellation or cutting to signify a link with the sufferings of Hussain (R.A.), whose martyrdom symbolises a wider struggle against oppression and tyranny. The martyrdom of Hussain eventually led to the division of Islam into the two main Sunni and Shi’ite sects and in recent years, the festival has been scarred by bloody sectarian attacks in some countries. Mourning processions will be taken out in cities and towns across the country. The azadars (mourners) will pay glowing tributes to sacrifices offered by Hussain (R.A.) and his companions for the supremacy of Islam. The mourners would pass
through their prescribed routes and processions will culminate in their prescribed places. Shi’ite Muslims make up about 20 percent of Pakistan’s population. The rest are mostly Sunni Muslims. Meanwhile, in connection with the first day of Ashura, Muharram 9, today, countrywide mourning processions will be taken out in memory of the martyrs of the Battle of Karbala fought between the army of Yazid I, the second Umayyad caliph,
and a small group of faithful led by Hussain (R.A.). ELABORATE MEASURES Elaborate security arrangements have been made to avoid any untoward incident during the mourning processions. In Lahore, more than 10,000 police, including 370 women personnel, will perform security duties on Monday and Tuesday. On Tuesday, 227 congregations will be organised while 47 proces-
sions will be held across Punjab. The Punjab government has imposed a ban on pillion riding. Furthermore, mobile phone services will be suspended along the routes of processions planned in major cities in a bid to foil remotecontrolled bombings. Police have also set up extra checkpoints and imposed restrictions on movement in some areas. The programme organisers have also been directed to ensure adherence to the code of conduct, route and timings. In Karachi, the main procession will begin from Nishtar Park at Parsi Colony at 1:00 pm, pass through M.A. Jinnah Road, Saddar’s Empress Market, Tibet Centre and end at Hussainian Iranian imambargah in Kharadar. The 500-year-old historical procession of No Dhala Tazia in Rohri is moving on the traditional route. Whereas, in Islamabad, the main procession will emerge from Asna Ashri imambargah in Sector G6/2 and will culminate at the same place after passing through its traditional route. Peshawar’s procession will depart from Imam Bargah Hussainia Hall at 10:00 am, and the main procession in Quetta will depart from Mekangi Road at 1:30 pm.
