Princess Alice Hospice is a charity providing free end of life care for people with life limiting illnesses, their families and loved ones.
Our vision is that everyone in our communities should have the best possible care and support before, during and after death. With care and support that is right for them, more people can live well, die well and grieve well. We believe that end of life care should have the emphasis on ‘life’ - helping people to live every moment to the fullest in comfort and dignity, to enjoy special moments and create precious memories.

What we do
The Care Quality Commission rated our care as ‘Outstanding’, and compassion is at the heart of everything we do - whether managing symptoms or supporting physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs.
We’re here for those who need us most and work hard to be inclusive and welcoming.
We aim to provide the right care, by the right people, at the right time, in the right place:
• Our Hospice at Home team can visit and provide advice, care, and expertise, supporting those who wish to stay at home in the comfort of familiar surroundings.
• Our In-Patient Unit provides short-term care and can be appropriate if symptoms are hard to manage at home. It’s a myth that people only come to the Hospice to die – many go home after a short stay, once their symptoms are under control.
• Our Wellbeing Centre provides face-to-face and video sessions for patients and loved ones as part of a weekly timetable, designed to help people live as well as they can for as long as they can.
• Our Bereavement Service provides support when a loved one dies –this can be via individual or group sessions and is tailored to the individual needs of each family.
• Our Man Shed (which is not only for men) provides an opportunity to talk with others while working on practical projects. Our volunteer-led sessions are open to patients, relatives of patients and those who are bereaved.
• Compassionate Neighbours are trained volunteers offering friendship and a listening ear, and providing regular emotional and social support to people in their local community who are lonely or socially isolated due to the effects of their own or a loved one’s long term or life limiting illness.
What we do
Spiritual care
Our Spiritual Care Team are on hand to listen to patients, families and carers, in the Hospice, or at home. The team are trained and experienced in supporting people who are dealing with life-limiting illness. They make no judgements about lifestyle and respect each person’s view of life.
Education, research and more
We provide care ourselves and this is a big part of what we do, but we go beyond that. We also empower local communities and carers; deliver education and research to develop skills, expertise and confidence for health and social care professionals; and we try to lead conversations about death, dying, grief and loss – because we think talking about them more will help everyone.
How you can help
We couldn’t do what we do without the generous support of our local community. It costs £12.3 million to deliver our care each year. NHS grants only cover around 20% of this, so we need to raise the rest via fundraising, retail, donations and legacies.

Over a third of the funding we receive is from gifts in Wills, which help ensure we are here to provide continued compassionate end of life care and support for the local community in the years to come. Get in touch if you’d like to know how you can support us in this way.
