Light up a Life 2024

It’s often the small moments that stay in our minds. The small occasions, like an afternoon walk kicking damp autumn leaves; the small kindnesses, like being given a cup of tea at the end of a long, exacting day; the small touches, like the wiping away of a tear; or the small words, like “Thank you” and “I love you”. So often, it’s these small moments that we remember, it’s these moments that lit up our life, and it’s these that we miss the most.

Missing these small moments can leave us with a visceral ache, a longing to know that kindness, that touch, that small word once again. But equally, remembering those moments can remind us that we have been cherished, that we mattered enough to someone that they chose to share their small moments with us.

Taking time to pause and recall a small moment shared with the person who has been important to us is actually to create another small moment. It’s a gift, an act of love we can give to the person we are remembering. And that act of remembering is the lighting up of their life. In a gentle, perhaps unspoken way, we’re saying that the person who has been important to us has lived, that they have made a difference in our world, and that they will not be forgotten.

Our reading

God of the small moments, of glances and smiles, of whispers and touches, you remember the details of our lives.

When we feel that aching want to know again a small moment of love – as surely, we will –quicken in us the warm memory of their presence.

And if a moment of solitude threatens to linger longer than we feel we can bear may the knowledge that this too will pass be a light that will light up our lives.

Thanks to:

Every one of our supporters who enable us to continue providing compassionate care 24/7, 365 days of the year, including those who have volunteered their time, supported our shops, remembered us in their Will, fundraised for us or have kindly donated.

Sponsoring a feather with the name of your loved one on our Giving Dove

Traditionally seen as the symbol of peace of the deepest kind, our Giving Dove is made up of hundreds of feathers, dedicated to those whose lives we wish to remember.

By sponsoring a feather, you not only create a lasting memory of someone special, but you also help to support the many patients and families who rely on the compassionate care we provide.

Crafted by a local artist, Oliver Russell, our beautiful Giving Dove is located in our reception area here in Esher.

“When my husband Robert was diagnosed with a brain tumour, they looked after him so well and also me.

I believe everyone deserves that incredible care.

That’s why I’ve decided to leave a gift in my Will, to give something back and help ensure others receive this amazing care for years to come.”
