Agriculture Foundation®
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
This past year, the Progressive Agriculture Foundation® (PAF) set out to remove even more barriers and increase accessibility to the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day® (PAF Safety Day) program, while strengthening its work through the Foundation’s mission.
The Program’s volunteer PAF Safety Day Coordinators are the backbone to delivering the potentially lifesaving education to local communities, while balancing numerous ongoing demands. As a result, to increase flexibility for the annual training requirement for PAF Safety Day Coordinators, all courses fully transitioned to an online, self-paced platform. This created the opportunity to build stronger connections and be better equipped with the skills and tools needed for success.
Another example of the Foundation’s commitment to its volunteers came in recognizing those who have been with the Program for 20 years or longer. Thus, the Bernard Geschke Volunteer Service Award was created. Geschke, who retired from the Foundation in 2022 after nearly three decades of involvement with the Program, was instrumental in growing the Program and helping local communities become safer and healthier. This award pays tribute to both Geschke’s passion for working with volunteers and the long-standing trust of the Program in local rural communities throughout North America.
In March, the Foundation unveiled its PAF Safety Day Classroom-based Delivery Mode designed for an average classroom size of 25 students and taught over several days, weeks or even months without ever needing to leave the classroom setting. The peer-reviewed curriculum encompasses Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education
as well as educational standards for ease of use within school requirements. With this addition, the Program can now be offered using one of the three delivery modes including: community-based, school-based, or classroom-based.
During 2022, nearly 62,000 individuals were reached through PAF Safety Days, which were held almost 100 more times than the year before as the program continues to expand. Additionally, the Foundation staff also participated in seven youth-focused farm shows and conventions rooted in strong industry connections bringing hands-on safety and health learning to new rural and farming audiences.
It is through the ongoing support of the Foundation’s partners, sponsors and donors that make this work possible. Their commitment is instrumental in continuing to carry out the Foundation’s mission.
Although the Foundation continues to provide potentially life-saving education to youth on farms, ranches, and in rural communities throughout North America, there remains much work to be done to address the lingering, staggering statistics about children involved in agriculture-related incidents and fatalities. But there remains great optimism backed by a strong plan of action put in place by the Foundation staff, its Board of Directors, and the nearly 400 PAF Safety Day Coordinators.

PROVIDING PEER-TO-PEER TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES
While PAF Safety Day lessons are geared towards elementary-school aged children, leadership experiences are available for teens, involved with 4-H, FFA, and other various youth organizations. Through peer-to-peer teaching and mentorship opportunities, teens can strengthen numerous interpersonal and life skills, including communication, decision-making, teamwork, empathy, and leadership. Additionally, the PAF Safety Day program can easily coincide with an FFA member’s supervised agricultural experience (SAE) or a 4-H member’s community service-learning initiative. Through participation, the PAF Safety Day program ultimately guides teens to make safer and healthier choices.

Classroom-based Delivery Mode Pilot Program |
The Foundation launched a novel safety and health-oriented education platform for its PAF Safety Day program. The Program is designed to expand the reach and increase the accessibility to potentially lifesaving learning for agricultural and rural youth. The new Classroom-based delivery mode is designed for an average classroom size of 25 students, taught over several days, weeks or even months without ever needing to leave the classroom setting. Participants will complete at least four lessons, with each interactive-focused session offering a comprehensive overview of one critical safety and health topic at a time.
Through the development of the Classroom-based delivery mode, a pilot program made possible in part by CHS, Inc., took place during 2021-2022 academic year. The pilot consisted of 13 trained PAF Safety Day Coordinators from 12 states who reached 560 students.
The Classroom-based delivery mode utilizes the PAF Safety Day program curriculum, as well as hands-on, durable resource kits allowing for ready-to-use experiential learning.

The students enjoyed the safety and health lessons, especially participating in the hands-on activities and demonstrations. The materials provided in the resource kit were very intriguing to the students and really helped me teach the concepts.
From the humble beginnings in 1995 with 19 safety day camps held across the south and Midwest regions of the United States, to now reaching more than 1.9 million children and adults across North America, Bernard Geschke has been instrumental in growing the Foundation’s program and helping local communities become safer and healthier. In honor of Geschke’s dedication for nearly 30 years, the Foundation has developed the Bernard Geschke Volunteer Service Award to recognize PAF Safety Day Coordinators with 20 years or more of service to the Program.

Mentoring Opportunities
In 2022, 11 live, virtual sessions were offered as a valued-added, lunch and learn opportunity for all current PAF Safety Day Coordinators. It also provided leadership opportunities for the PAF Safety Day Coordinators that served as panelists, and strengthened relationships with guest panelists.
All lead and assistant PAF Safety Day Coordinators must complete an online, self-paced training course through the PAF Training Center. To help best meet the needs of the PAF Safety Day Coordinators, the PAF program team staff has developed three different levels, including:
• Safety Day Builder, designed for PAF Safety Day Coordinators in their first year
• Safety Day Builder Plus, designed for PAF Safety Day Coordinators in their second year
• Safety Day Builder Proficient, designed for PAF Safety Day Coordinators who have been with the Program for three of more years

You should volunteer at a Progressive Agriculture Safety Day because it is making an impact, and we all have heard of at least one horrible [agriculturerelated] incident where a child got hurt. I recommend that this Program should be implemented everywhere across the country.
The Progressive Agriculture Foundation has a true belief in making a difference in the lives of youth, families, and rural communities. It is the core tenet that drives everything the Foundation and Program does from the safety and health topics to online activities to the adaptations for different delivery modes.
