From the editor... Crazy summer so far. Same-sex marriages are legal, driving while holding a cell phone is not, and there’s actually a chance that someone other than a white guy will soon become President. Things are changing faster than ever. Could a billion Obama campaign signs be wrong? Until there’s a 40 mph Segway, it looks like we may need to keep on driving. So, instead of complaining about the cost of gas, perhaps we should celebrate current prices while we still can—it can’t be too long before five bucks a gallon seems like a steal. Whether global warming is our fault, or it’s just nature wreaking havoc, things are definitely heating up. Until then, I’ll answer these: Dear Chainsaw, Is San Diego being considered for an NBA franchise? -Noah Hopps, National City Noah, You just made King Stahlman’s mouth water. Dear Chainsaw, What do you think of the people who heckled the Olympic Torch? -Hugh Johnson, El Cajon Hugh, Well, they are Boo-dists, after all. Dear Chainsaw, Boo-dists? Really? Try answering this: Do you think that carbon-fiber artificial legs give sprinter Oscar Pistorious an unfair advantage in his quest for Olympic Gold? -Venus D., Chula Vista Venus, Only to the extent they’re lighter, they spring, they take less energy to propel, and, if he sprains an ankle, he can just screw on another one. It’s easy to be inspired by this guy. I’m petitioning the Olympic Committee to give me a 30-yard head start, because I was born tragically slow. Wish me luck.

Dear Chainsaw, Did you hear about the Utah track meet photographer who got stuck in the leg by a javelin and kept on taking pictures? -Shindra Pierce, Del Mar Shindra, Amazing courage. Even more impressive is that, because he staggered a few more yards before falling down, he enabled the javelin thrower to set the meet record. Dear Chainsaw, Do you think there should be an asterisk placed next to Barry Bonds’ home run record? -Colon Ampersand, Imperial Beach Colon, I think the question mark is a more sarcastic punctuation choice: 762? Dear Chainsaw, How do you explain infinite space in the Universe? -Carl Sagan, Pluto Carl, The Universe is just a bubble some giant kid from another dimension is about to step on. How could you not know that? Besides, the only infinite space I care about

Lighten Up Bask in the glow of Bruce Nauman’s risqué artwork by ADRIENNE LUDWIG

Since the early 1970s, contemporary artist Bruce Nauman has been widely regarded as an innovative bad-boy. Nauman’s mischievous experimentation with light draws inspiration from neon beer signs, whose commercial messages he aimed to subvert by depicting adult themes and provocative language twists in his own naughty neon artwork. Despite his work’s controversial nature, Nauman has long garnered international praise from art aficionados. In 2006, his irreverent design and thought-provoking symbolism were rewarded by artfacts.com, who named him the world’s #1 living artist. Through August 31, La Jolla’s Museum of Contemporary Art invites visitors to get illuminated, inspired and maybe even a little offended by Elusive Signs, an exhibition of Nauman’s neon work from 1965-1985. GEORGIA O’KEEFFE’S MASTERWORKS ON DISPLAY by ADRIENNE LUDWIG

Georgia O’Keeffe was a groundbreaking artist who used brilliant color schemes and powerful symbolism to depict the struggles women faced in the early 20th century. In addition to her uniquely abstract landscapes, O’Keeffe is most well-known for her large-scale paintings of flowers, seashells and other curvilinear forms suggestive of the female anatomy. She was a master of perceiving emotion in the creations of nature, and she incorporated that bold vision into

artwork that led President Ronald Regan to award her with National Medal of Arts in 1985. After touring the country for more than a year, the Georgia O’Keeffe and the Women of the Stieglitz Circle exhibit finally arrives in San Diego’s oldest and largest art museum. The show features more than 80 works from O’Keeffe and four other female artists who, in addition to inspiring O’Keeffe, were all promoted by Alfred Stieglitz, the man who discovered O’Keeffe and later married her.

FUNNY PAGES DAVID SEDARIS’ LATEST BOOK by bonnie vandewater

No stranger to San Diego, David Sedaris visited Copley Symphony Hall on June 30 to promote his latest book, When You Are Engulfed in Flames (published by Little, Brown Book Group, which Sedaris chose because he liked their logo best). This collection of sardonic essays and awkward, neurotic stories from Sedaris’ bizarre life is sure to make you squirm and smirk. The book takes you from the beautiful French countryside to a shady North Carolina mobile home to buy drugs— and somewhere in there, an uncomfortable plane ride demonstrates the gravity of daily dilemmas we all encounter. In a recent interview, here’s what the funnyman had to say: On the tip jar that sits on the table next to him during book signings: “I spend on all of the money on myself. If I were to say to the audience, ‘This money is for charity,’ people wouldn’t do it. I’m just very clear about it. I’m gonna buy cigarettes with it, candy, milkshakes, whatever I want.” On blending fantasy with reality: “A lot of people ask how much I exaggerate. Like sometimes I’ll be at a dinner party and I’ll tell a story and someone will say, ‘That’s not true.’ And I’ll think, ‘What does it matter if it’s true? It’s a story!’“ On monkeys: “The thing is, most monkeys are great ideas. But the Helping Hands monkeys (Helping Hands provides monkey helpers for the disabled) are just what you would want: a slave. And you can say to any of these monkeys, ‘Go get me a cup of coffee’ and it would do it. ‘Empty this ashtray.’ It would do it. And I don’t really like to name people I think are lousy writers, but if any one of them came to town and I knew they had a monkey, I’d go and buy their book, because it’d bring me closer to that monkey.”

Constructed nearly a century ago, the spacious restaurant sucks in panoramas of San Diego Bay, Point Loma and Balboa Park, while invoking a palette of classic architectural detail. Open Mondays through Fridays for lunch only, Top of the Park is one of the best kept secrets among tight-scheduled business folk, since there’s rarely a wait to land a table.

Perched on the 10th floor of the historic La Valencia hotel, the recently renovated Sky Room is home to intimate feedings of top-score Kobe beef, Hudson Valley foie gras and San Diego’s most expensive appetizer, called Stars in the Sky. For $2,100, the latter affords you two glasses of vintage bubbly served in Baccarat crystal flutes, an ounce of fine caviar and four Royal Miyagi oysters, one of which reveals a Tahitian black pearl. The stemware and coveted gem go home with you; the 180-degree view of La Jolla Cove does not.

As executive chef and partner of Island Prime, Indigo Grill and Kemo Sabe, Deborah Scott has a full plate. Her restaurants are part of the Cohn Restaurant Group, a family-run culinary empire that also includes The Prado in Balboa Park, Blue Point and Dakota Grill in the Gaslamp, and six other local eateries. “If it weren’t for the Cohns, I would’ve never had the opportunity to achieve all that I have,” says Scott, whose partnership with the Cohns began when she opened Indigo Grill in Little Italy 14 years ago. David and Lesley Cohn frequented Indigo with their kids; David was such a big fan of Scott’s cooking that he approached her to be his business partner. The relationship blossomed, transcending the nuts and bolts of everyday hospitality management. “Not only are David and Lesley my business partners, but they are two of the best friends I’ve ever had,” says Scott. Focusing much of her creative energy on

presentation, Scott makes sure that the plates she serves are full of vibrant color. That, combined with her knack for blending Pacific Rim and Asian flavors, has certainly contributed to the success of Island Prime, where Scott spends most of her time. Scott developed her unique style while training at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, but it was her father’s influence that made the greatest impact on her craft. “We grilled clams and oysters on a grate in the sand, and caught flounder and oysters during summers in the Outer Banks of North Carolina,” she recalls. Aside from the uncommon ingredients she uses every day – such as huitacoche, a corn fungus used for Indigo Grill’s tamales – Scott says that the most important thing to have in the kitchen is a love for food and the restaurant industry. “You have to have passion for this business,” she says. “It can’t be forced.”

Here’s the email the doctor sent to PacificSD. Dear PacificSD, My name is Rob. I am an active and young 30-somethingyear-old Navy physician, recently accepted into the Navy Flight Surgeon program. My path is similar to that of the Navy dive doctor that appeared on ABC’s The Bachelor a while ago, except that I diverged to flight school instead of dive school. I believe that, like that bachelor, I have a lot to offer someone. However, after a near miss or two a long time ago, I am still single. I found it very hard to meet anyone during medical school and my internship, but now, after five years of near constant pressure to study and perform professionally, I would love to have a life again. I am funny, fun, well-liked, athletic,

in shape and very sociable, but just have not been ga-ga over someone since I can remember. My perfect match: Reading your April 2008 issue, I was totally and completely taken by the model on the cover, Patience—taken especially by one feature from one picture in particular, her smile on page 25. Looking at it, I pick up that she is fun-loving, sweet, kind, beautiful and glowing… all from the smile. It blows me away. Even though she is wearing a trash bag on the cover*, I would love to meet her and would even subject myself to being followed around by a reporter if a blind date were to be arranged. Sincerely, Rob Rob isn’t the only man in town to have a crush on Patience,

but he is the only one to have expressed his desires in writing. To reward his efforts, PacificSD’s matchmakers forwarded Rob’s email to Patience, not because we actually expected her to go on a blind date with the Navy doc, but because we are 100% devoted to our readers and, whenever possible, try to get them dates with covergirls (or boys). It was a long shot at best, so we didn’t expect much of a response from Patience, but she actually called. Here’s what she said: “I got the email and just started reading it, and my mouth dropped open. It was very sweet and well written, and he had nothing but good intentions. It made an impression that he pointed out a certain picture and named all

of these qualities. It was obvious that he had really thought about it. He didn’t just say, ‘The girl on the cover is hot, I want her.’ He wanted to meet me. He seems like a real good quality guy, and I figured that it’d be silly for me not to meet him. For him to put all that time into writing the letter and to be willing to subject himself to being followed around, just to meet me, I mean, who am I to turn that down? I decided that I should give this guy a chance.” Talk about shock and awe. A beautiful model agrees to go on a date with a guy she’s never met, and she hasn’t even seen a photo of him. To reward Rob’s eagerness and Patience’s willingness, PacificSD treats the couple to a romantic blind date. [ Continued on page 46 ]

At Clay’s, Patience and Rob take a seat at the bar for cocktails and appetizers. The exquisite views are par for the course here; the live jazz electrifies the atmosphere. Before dinner begins, the two are split for mid-date debriefings.

He says… “So far so good. At first, we both agreed that it was kind of nerve-wracking, but the anxiety is kind of over. I told Patience that she looks just like her picture, and that my initial response to her picture was pretty strong. She’s a good talker, too. One of her favorite activities is to get together with friends and chat and things like that. And that’s huge, you know? That’s pretty much similar to my coffee-shop lifestyle. “I don’t think either of us are really small-talkers. It’s been more like, ‘What’s your ambition?’ and bigger issues like that. It’s kind of interesting that we grew up very differently. We talked

about that a lot. My parents are still together after like 50 years or something, and they’re very supportive. I think Patience’s story is the exact opposite. “I think Patience is more comfortable than me at this point. I’m still a little on the anxious side, and she’s not, as far as I can tell. It’s hard to tell if there’s chemistry between us. As for the level of physical attraction, is there anything higher than a ten? The perfect ending to this night would a fire on the beach. Fade to black.” She says… “I’m feeling relieved now that all of the buildup is over. Rob seems like a nice guy,

but so far he just seems very uncomfortable—not a lot of eye contact, like he’s just not very relaxed. I guess I thought he was going to be more outgoing, because he was so forward with things in the letter, but he doesn’t seem as open now that I’m actually here. The email was probably one of the most romantic things that has ever happened to me, but then again, I haven’t had that many good experiences with guys. “I do like Rob’s enthusiasm about this date. Apparently, he told the entire world about it. He told his mother and his brothers, and that’s adorable. I’m completely opposite. I told nobody.

“I can’t tell a lie to save my life—the level of physical attraction could be a seven, but it’s probably closer to a five. From what I can tell so far, I think we could be really good friends, nothing more than that. How would I like the date to end? If that guy (Patience points at a long-haired blonde guy walking by) was my date… well, let’s just say he’s more my type.” FINALLY… PacificSD leaves Rob and Patience alone to enjoy (or not) the rest of their evening.

After match… PacificSD calls Patience and Rob a few days after the date to see what we missed. Here’s what they said: He says… “Overall it went really well. We stayed at Clay’s and talked for a long time, until 11 o’clock. The food was phenomenal. We had eel sushi as an appetizer. After that, I had the duck, and I think Patience had the lobster ravioli, but I’m not sure. It was all very good, and I loved the atmosphere. “We were both pretty anxious and a little bit nervous with the cameras going off and people assessing us. I wouldn’t say that the connection between us got better as the night went on, but it was good all around. She’s real easy to talk to. Actually, Patience’s most appealing quality was that she put me at ease. It could be the start of a good friendship at the very least.

“By the time we were done chatting, it was pretty late, so that was it. There was a hug and a phone number exchange, and then we just went our separate ways. I wouldn’t have imagined that we’d just talk and that would be it. I wish we could have gone out and done something else afterwards, like another element of the date. Anything. “My expectations were just to have fun. In that regard, mission accomplished. There was no diving board to jump into a romantic situation, but that’s probably okay. That’s not usually how I operate, anyway. If there was to be any kind of romantic future, to have any success in the long run, it wouldn’t start out in a flurry. I’m still thrilled that I signed up for this, but my friends are already giving me a whole bunch of grief.” She says… “It went fine; Rob’s a nice guy. The view at Clay’s was beautiful and the food was amazing, but we didn’t stay long. We left at about 11 o’clock. And... hmm. I don’t know. It wasn’t like... I can’t even... there was no connection. We just didn’t have that much in common. Rob’s good looking, but that instant chemistry just wasn’t there. “Rob seemed pretty uncomfortable and nervous the whole time. Therefore, he drank alcohol. I didn’t. He seemed at a loss for words, so I sort of held the conversation a lot, which is fine. I wish he was a little more fun, though. He was funny here and there, but he didn’t speak very much. It could have been his nervousness, but it was very tense. We didn’t do anything after Clay’s. Rob asked if I wanted to walk on the beach or walk around La Jolla, but I said, “Let’s just call it a night.” We exchanged phone numbers and said goodnight. It was very sweet. “Since then, we’ve texted back and forth, and we talked the other night on the phone. I’ve learned something about Rob: he is far better at writing to express himself than he is at talking to express himself. He sent me a lengthy email yesterday about his feelings and what he’s thinking. It was brilliant the way he wrote it all, but when we talk on the phone, it seems more forced and uncomfortable. It seems like I could have chemistry with the guy in those emails and text messages, but when we talk, I’m like, ‘Where’d he go?’” CONCLUSION… Before the date, Rob had been confident, describing himself as “impulsive” and “assertive.” In contrast, Patience had expressed anxiety, saying, “When I sit down is when I start to get nervous.” In the end, however, their roles had reversed—Patience had become more confident, while Rob had transformed into the nervous one. The official military description for Rob’s contribution to this phenomenon: Crash and Burn. Dr. Rob is an officer and absolutely a gentleman. Patience is a hopeless romantic. Unfortunately for both, their fantasies were only partially realized. She fell in love with words, he fell in love with a picture, and both proved that you can’t judge a book, let alone a magazine, by its cover.
