EN EL TALLER DEL MAMBO La idea estaba ahí, pero, como explica el italiano, “le faltaba mambo, le faltaba un poco de ritmo”, así que decidió unir mecánica y arte urbano para dar una segunda vida a estos turismos. Hoy no es difícil ver un Citroen Saxo con cara de gatita paseando por la isla o un Seat Ibiza con reminiscencias al Bowie más glam, pero en un momento la idea parecía una locura. Y el proceso realmente lo es. Sarnelli no coge coches que hayan sido fabricados más allá del año 2000, fecha que pone como límite por el exceso de complementos eléctricos que se empezaron a usar desde entonces. Busca, por tanto, coches de mediados de los 90. “Los coches con los que crecimos los de mi generación, aquellos que estaban diseñados para durar”, comenta, permitiéndose un guiño nostálgico. Un equipo de mecánicos hace entonces la puesta a punto, supliendo la falta de piezas de carrocería con imaginación. La segunda fase ya está resuelta, faltaría ahora imprimirle el mambo. We Love Ibiza Art Car trabaja con artistas de todas las disciplinas, ilustradoras como Amaia Arrazola, grafiteros como Txemi, el ibicenco Hosh y Rossano Poletti, o expertos en collage y audiovisuales como Lauro Samblas. Todos ellos han plasmado sus mundos sobre la chapa de un coche. En los últimos meses, la idea es ampliar aún más el abanico de creativos y ya están trabajando para cambiar la tapicería e imprimirle su propio toque urbano.
La idea de dar una nueva vida a los coches es algo que fascina a Sarnielli. No es al único. “Tenemos un Peugeot 205, un coche que compré a un viejito de Barcelona”, explica el italiano. “Lo usaba mucho, hasta la familia le puso un nombre, Pelotita. Cuando lo traje a Ibiza le dimos otra vida; lo pintamos, le hice unas fotos y se las mandé al antiguo dueño. El hombre estaba feliz, decía que Pelotita se había ido a Ibiza y que ahora anda de fiesta”, recuerda entre risas. Cuando no anda de fiesta por la isla, Pelotita descansa en un garaje junto a otros cuatro coches resucitados. Hay dos más que están esperando pasar por el taller para vivir una nueva vida. Uno de ellos es un Citroen Saxo del 97. Efectivamente, el mismo que acompañó a Sarnelli en sus primeros veranos en la isla.
THE PIZZAZZ GARAGE The idea was there, but, as Sarnelli says, “it needed a bit of pizzazz, a bit of rhythm,” so he decided to bring together mechanics and urban art and give these cars a new life. Now it’s not unusual on the island to see a Citroen Saxo with a kitten face or a Seat which is reminiscent of Bowie’s glam phase, but at the time the idea seemed crazy. And the process truly is. Sarnelli does not accept cars made after 2000, because that’s when an excess of electrical accessories began to be added to cars. He seeks cars
from the mid-1990s. “The cars my generation grew up with, which were made to last,” he points out, indulging in a moment of nostalgia. A team of mechanics gets the car in shape, replacing any missing sections of the body with their imagination. The second phase is complete, and now it’s just a question of the pizzazz. We Love Ibiza Art Car works with artists from all disciplines, from illustrators like Amaia Arrazola, graffiti artists like Txemi, the Ibiza-born artist Hosh and Rossano Poletti, to collage and audiovisual artists like Lauro Samblas. They have all drawn their worlds onto the body of a car. In the last few months, the idea has been to expand even more the portfolio of artists, and they are working on upholstery alterations and new and unique urban touches. The idea of giving cars a new life is something that fascinates Sarnelli, and he’s not the only one “We have a Peugeot 205, a car I bought from a little old man in Barcelona,” he says. “He used it a lot, and it even had a name, Pelotita. When I brought it to Ibiza we gave it a new start: we painted it, I took some photos and sent them to the old owner. He was really happy, and said that Pelotita had gone to Ibiza to party,” he recalls, laughing. When it’s not partying on the island, Pelotita rests in a garage along with other born-again cars. There are two more waiting to be serviced, so that they can start their new life. One of them is a ‘97 Citroen Saxo. Yes, it’s the same one that accompanied Sarnelli during his first few summers on the island.
