DEAR FRIENDS: The future is already here and we each hold the power to do something to improve it.

As we listened to area citizens and researched local needs, it was clear that our communities face serious educational, employment and economic development challenges. These factors contribute to erosion of our region’s civic leadership base. The absence of entry-level employment opportunities in combination with students’ own lack of career-related work experience is leading to significant out-migration of our educated youth. We seem to be doing a good job of preparing our graduates to work, live and serve in other places!

This is a matter about which we can – and should – do something. to be an Extension Service Agent.

The Foundation’s Civic Leaders Fellowship Program was conceived and launched to build access routes to local employment for interested students and to help them to find their place within the civic leadership of our communities. We were heartened by the many partners who stepped up to work in collaboration with us, providing funding, training and opportunities for our Civic Leaders Fellows.

Through their experiences, the fourteen college-age students chosen as the inaugural class of Civic Leaders Fellowship Program participants learned …

“I really do love this area. I’ve grown up here and I want to work in this area.” Kyle “This is the real world. You’re expected to do things and people are depending on you to do them… The community can use my help here.” Justin “It’s important to give back something to the place that’s given you all that you really have.” Joshua “A whole new world of opportunities was opened to me – before the Civic Leaders Fellowship, I hadn’t ever really considered that I could find a job in Parkersburg after graduation.” Sarah

When we extend ourselves and our resources to guide our next generation’s hands onto the proverbial “ladder of success,” we’re creating greater promise for our region’s future. This is philanthropy with true impact.

Upon program completion, our one graduating senior among this year’s Civic Leaders Fellows received two local offers of employment, accepting the one most closely aligned with his interests. In partnership with other funders and program volunteers, we’re showing that local people who are willing to work together can make a positive impact on the lives of those to follow us, one person at a time.
