More Than a Game

KATRINA DAVIS, Director, Talent Development // Northern California region // Employed at PDS: 14 years

They say there is no halftime for cheerleaders and Katrina Davis will be the first to admit that the sport isn’t for the faint of heart. For the past eight years, she has volunteered as cheerleading coach for the Manteca Chargers Football and Cheer where she is also on the board as cheer coordinator. The youth organization is made up entirely of volunteers including her husband, who coaches football. Her two daughters are on the cheer team and her 16-year-old son plays football.

“It’s a team sport. Not only do the kids have 50 sideline cheers they have to learn, but they also tumble, do stunts and throw each other around. It takes a lot of skill, practice and trust,” the mother of six said. “Sometimes I’m out on the field from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., especially if it’s a home game, but it’s what I love to do. Being in a supportive role at PDS has helped me find that balance.”

Katrina expects nothing but greatness from her cheer squad. More than anything, she finds great joy knowing she is helping kids develop new skills and build self-confidence. As a coach, she wants her team to understand that success comes from working together and doing what’s best for the team, especially when they’re competing.

Cheerleading is a team sport. If we work together, we win together.
