Abstract: This paper aims to: present the historical linguistic background of the Caribbean British Colony of Montserrat, “The Emerald Isle”, before and after the eruption of the Soufriere Volcano on September 18, 1996. It also aims to describe the island’s population shifts before and after the volcano’s eruption. The relevance of language and culture and the influence of the Irish and British (initial inhabitants of Montserrat) and other regional Creoles will also be discussed in the section on linguistic approaches to Montserrat Creole based on reports and studies conducted on the Montserrat English and its evolution. Then the paper turns to consider the future of Montserrat: reconstruction or disappearance? Will Montserrat be a source of a possible language change, revival or in the worst of the cases, death? A final conclusion will close the paper.
