Living the wall (Cee, A Coruña) Spain June 2011 Shelter for pilgrims in Way of St James Competition. XXI Concurso Ibérico PLADUR Accesit With Saúl Alonso and Manuel de la Cal Etsava. University of Valladolid

We propose the construction of a place for pilgrims rest and refuge linked to Way of St James, in a rough spot near the town of Cee, A Coruña. In the chosen location, a hillside with strong slope, there is a set of buildings, a chapel, several sheds and a fountain, with which the proposal should be integrated. The modular removable nature and material used in the project shall be the main factors. It starts since the traditional architecture of the area -stone masonry walls-, reinterpreting the features and possibilities of this basic solution, where the pieces are joined, forming a strong architectural element. It proposes the construction of an integral element of longitudinal development, a “masonry wall”, which creates a suggestive inside space that meets the needs of small program, using as main material PLADUR plates. We work closely in each piece and assembly system -bonding-, looking to resolve full intervention with minimal elements. One piece resolves the building fully, both the exterior and the perception of natural light into the interior space. The proposed location in relation to the rest of built elements, keep a traditional logic. The wall is used as an entrace to the site, in contact with the Way, strengthening their relationship. Accompanies the pilgrim in the ascent to the chapel, giving new sense to the place.
