International Women’s day 2024

“International Women’s Day”

About this date

Women’s day is a worldwide celebration. Every 8th of March, we recognise women’s achievements on gender equality. But it has not always been like this.

150 years ago, women could not vote, they were excluded from public areas, could not own property, along many other restrictions.

How did things shift?

Actually, changes occurred gradually, responding to the effort of all the women and men who fought to achieve what is right.

In the late 19th century, more women became aware of the poor progress and failed attempts to achieve the right to vote. Luckily, some years after, in 1903, Emmilie Pankhurst formed the Women’s Social and Political Union. Wom-

en became even more conscious, so they started building protests, rallies and strikes with women being arrested, injured and even killed.

The big change

In 1914, after WW1 was declared, women started receiving important positions at jobs, mainly since many men were serving in the war. And later, around 1928, all women over 21 were finally allowed to vote. They also began to gain other rights like political representation (1929), access to greater opportunities, fairer pay (1970), and working rights (1975). In 1979, Britain had its first female prime minister.

Stereotypes

Stereotypes are a great example of inequality in our daily life. It is a generalized opinion over a person or group of people. "You throw like a girl" or "Boy's don't cry" might be the most common ones. These exist because of restrictive ideas about gender from centuries ago.

Revista digital 2024, primera edición. Día Internacional de la literatura. 20

To sum up, all the rights that women possess now, have taken years of hard work to be granted. That’s why every 8th of March we ought to celebrate the great achievements on the road towards equity.

World Book Day

“World Book Day”

In the month of April, World Book Day, which is organized by UNESCO, is celebrated all around the world.

Globally, it is celebrated on April 23th, but Argentina celebrates it on a different day, which is June 15th.

This day commemorates the death of big writers known internationally: William Shakespeare, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Miguel de Cervantes, who all died onApril 23 in 1616.

World Book Day was created in 1926 in Spain, until UNESCO made it official internationally in 1995.

The objective of the month is to make people aware of the importance of books and the infinite benefits that they bring, such as:

keeping our minds busy, being more creative, and inspiring ourselves to meet new people with shared interests. Also, to promote alphabetization of every kid and for them to be able to access educational books.

Every country that celebrates this month has different ways of promoting their writers and books. For example, in Argentina there is “Feria del Libro” where printing houses can sell their books and publish more works, and writers can deliver talks and interact with their public.

This year it takes place from April 27th to May 15th in Buenos Aires.

UNESCO, with other international organizations, chooses a

Book Capital each year as a reward for having encouraged people to read more and inspire new writers.

This 2024 the chosen capital was Strasburg, and in 2025 it will be Rio de Janeiro.

The Book Capital duty is to keep on encouraging people to read and enter the fabulous world of books, and create new programs for kids and young adults during a whole year.

“Literature with a ‘W’: Women also write”

In honor of International Women’s Day and World Book Day, our Language teacher, Karina Panarelli, suggested that we should carry out research into some female writers and write their CVs.

Since we are finishing highschool, we needed to get familiarized with the format of what a CV looks like and, since we have little to none work experience, we couldn’t create our own.

We mixed the need to learn how to make a CV with the importance of women in Literature and the great idea of acknowledging and learning about their impact and created these.

We have learned more about our favorite writers, by honoring them, and, at the same time, we have now developed our ability to make a great CV.

We are glad to share with you

the material we have gathered about these remarkable women whose achievements affected culture in so many ways.

To read their CVs just scan the QR codes next to their photographs. Enjoy the experience!

Literature as a mirror of real life”

Journey's End by R.C. Sherriff is a 1928 play set in the trenches of the great war. Through the scenes, Sherriff masterfully captures the grim and tough realities of war, probably because he served in WW1, transcending the glorified ideas often associated with war.

Firstly, the play occurs in the British trenches during the end of the war. The author’s drawing from his own wartime experiences paints a raw and unvarnished picture of life at the trenches, where the soldiers grapple with fear, and throughout the whole play he conveys a sense of desolation.

Secondly, the characters in the play are men with their own vulnerabilities. Stanhope, the company commander, shows perfectly the psychological toll of war. His alcoholism is used as a coping mechanism to forget the horrors

he faces daily, which reveals the fragility of the human mind under extreme stress.

Lastly, the soldiers in the play spend endless hours in anticipation waiting for raids, or for death, contrasting completely with most of the movies where everything is battling against the

Revista digital 2024, primera edición. Día Internacional de la literatura. 28

opposing side. This is torture for both the soldiers and the reader since you can sense how the play is really slow as you are waiting either for something to happen or for it to end.

In conclusion, Journey's End shows the harsh reality of war, being written from Sheriff's own experience in the war, it represents the true image of war and the soldiers, who have to suffer throughout their whole service time.

“What literature means to me”

Literature is like a magical forest filled with stories, ideas, and emotions waiting to be discovered. For someone who loves literature, it is like embarking on an adventure every time they open a book. Each page holds the power to transport us to different worlds, introduce us to fascinating characters, and provoke deep thoughts and feelings.

But literature is more than just entertainment; it serves as a mirror reflecting the multifaceted nature of humanity. Through literature, we gain insights into different cultures, perspectives, and historical contexts, we develop empathy and understanding across boundaries of time and space.

A book that I feel can perfectly represent literature is The Picture of Dorian Gray. This novel was written by the Irish writer Oscar

Wilde, who was also a poet, novelist and playwright. He always stood out for his sharp and critical sense of humor and was always able to speak his mind even if it bothered someone else.

The Picture of Dorian Gray tells the story of a young aristocrat who was obsessed with his own beauty and had a portrait made of himself. As Dorian began to commit cruelties on others and devoted himself to the pleasures of life, his portrait began to reflect the moral decay and the corruption of his soul. This is how he remained young, the portrait aged instead of him.

Dorian hid it in a room that only he had access to so that no one would witness the transformation. Many years passed and this man still remained young, although the painting increasingly represented

Revista digital 2024, primera edición. Día Internacional de la literatura. 30

his decadence.

Until one day he realized that to redeem himself he had to start being a better person, but it was too late, he had even gone so far as to murder the painter of the painting himself. Unable to revert the consequences of his moral decay, he decided to stab his own painting.

As the servants of the house heard Dorian scream, they entered the hidden room, only to find the portrait as it was originally with his beautiful and young face. However, it was Dorian's body that was lying on the floor, monstrously aged and stabbed.

In this novel, Oscar Wilde reflects on good and evil, showing how the human soul, like the portrait of Dorian, is initially beautiful and pure, but is susceptible to deformation if the obsession with the power of youth, beauty and narcissism haunts one’s spirit.

To sum up, for me, literature is an invitation to happiness, it opens my mind, it allows me to enter a different world, to live experiences and learn through what happens to the characters.

“El alma del libro”

According to Cambridge Dictionary, literature is “ written artistic works, especially those with a high and lasting artistic value”. In our opinion, what weighs most in this definition is “artistic value”. According to the Oxford Dictionary, it is “A body of written works related by subject-matter, by language or place of origin, or by prevailing cultural standards of merit.”. We believe that a nice way to mix these definitions is saying that literature is a body of written works with artistic value.

Nonetheless, in our opinion, literature goes beyond the written page, beyond what you can see, it’s connecting to something, traveling someplace that’s not your reality, understanding issues with different perspectives and points of view.

It’s the bridge we cross to be able to live multiple lives without chang-

ing ours, experiencing millions of journeys without leaving our house, finding a place to go to, to escape to, to travel to and let our imagination flow. It's finding a place to be creative, without judgment, without limits.

Literature invites us to join characters in beautiful places, to create people to go to when in need. It helps us connect with ourselves and with other stories.

We, personally, believe literature to be extremely therapeutic. We can experience our feelings freely and with no boundaries. Delfi, for instance, is a big fan of writing. Whenever she feels down, she writes about it, she puts her feelings on paper creating an alternative way to feel better and to express her thoughts, worries and emotions. Whereas Valen is more of a reader. She looks at books as a way to free

Revista digital 2024, primera edición. Día Internacional de la literatura. 32

her mind of her problems and her concerns. She can leave her daily life every now and then to go someplace where she feels comfortable and safe.

On an emotional level, books and stories help stimulate our imaginations and creativity, they can unlock new ideas, help develop our empathy, encourage us to see things from many perspectives. While in a more “academic” way, they teach us new things, make us acculturate and educate us both in language and vocabulary and in composition. We can learn infinitely from literature.

There is a quote from La Sombra del Viento by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, a Barcelonian author, that we feel portrays in a really accurate way what we feel towards literature, it goes “Cada libro, cada tomo que ves, tiene alma.

Books (and any format of literature in general) are not only a portal to other worlds and lives we can escape to, other minds we can get into to understand their ideas, thoughts, feelings and points of view towards life, but they are also our friends, our comfort and joy, they accompany us in our moments of happiness and console us in our sorrow.

It pains us to think that there are loads of books written and to be written that we are not going to have the chance to read and learn from, that we may not even know about their existence. There may be thousands of masterpieces that could change our lives, our mindset and position regarding life and our way

Revista digital 2024, primera edición. Día Internacional de la literatura. 33

to approach it and live it, that we are going to reach the end of our lives without having read.

It hurts to think about every author we don’t know and we are never going to read, that we are going to die and we are not going to travel through every single world that has been imagined.

Books help us cope with grief and go to a happy place, every time we go through the last page of a book and finish it it feels like we are losing a friend, because in a way, it was one, it is one. We took care of it as well as it took care of us.

Literature is more than books, more than just words captured in pages. It is a way of expression, of putting your feelings into words and sharing them within a page, it is a way of escaping our reality into a better one. It is a way of being happy.

Musical Corner

Lorenzo Roberto Pettinato. Music and Literature: “The machine stops” by Hawkwind

Have you ever thought of how a music album based on a piece of writing would look like? If not, I´m going to introduce you to one of the most bizarre sets of songs in music history. Keep on reading, you will thank me later.

At first, most listeners strongly agree that a strange music piece won't make them reflect upon anything. Wrong! Believe it or not, it takes about a few minutes to realize that the unexpected sound effects, the lack of pattern, as in a free verse poem, or the unpredictable endings which create some sort of suspense, make this type of music not easy to grasp at all, and turns out to be a mind

blowing experience, forcing the listener to keep on going, just to get to know the full piece, as in a play or any literary work.

In this peculiar case, a band known worldwide as Hawkwind went over an award-winning piece by E. M. Forster called The Machine Stops , a 1909 science fiction story set in a world where humanity relies on a giant machine to provide its needs.

The band’s album, also called “The Machine Stops”, portrays this dystopian world imagined by E.M Foster surprisingly well by using sound effects and a wide variety of instruments.

Revista digital 2024, primera edición. Día Internacional de la literatura. 36

Hawkwind’s style has also been a source of inspiration to a vast range of groups venturing in Space rock genre, such as Sumo, with noticeable and further-explored similarities in their album “After Chabon”, where bizarre sound effects and a wide variety of instruments stand out.

In a nutshell, I can assure that this album can raise a way of thinking even though it might cater for all tastes.

Page Turners,

“If Cats Disappeared from the World Genki”

Imagine you’re told you have a week left to live and suddenly the devil shows up at your doorstep, but he’s not a little man with horns, he is you... in a Hawaiian shirt.

This book takes you through the week of a man who is dying but makes a deal with the devil.

If he makes one thing disappear, he gets one more day to live but there’s a twist, the devil has to approve of the things that will get erased from the minds of everyone in the world. So what happens when the devil chooses something that is very dear to his heart? What if the devil wants to erase cats? What if cats disappeared from the world?

I really enjoyed reading this book. Its well written characters and the

devil’s witty personality make it really easy to read and enjoy.

Besides being funny, it also makes you think about the value we give to things as human beings and how different people value things differently.

Ideal for: fiction lovers, comedy enthusiasts & reflective readers.

“The Uncensored Picture of Dorian Gray”

The picture of Dorian Gray takes you through the motions of a young man (Dorian Gray) getting his portrait painted by Basil Hallaward. Basil was infatuated by Dorian's pure beauty and he was in love with the act of capturing it in his portraits. One day, when Dorian is in Basil’s home, he meets Lord Henry who changes Dorian’s outlook on beauty and makes him become obsessed with his own.

I picked this edition because when the book was first published it was censored by Wilde’s editor and this is the original version. This classic is a very good one to start with if you haven’t read classical literature before. It’s an entertaining story with a wild twist at the end and it has a great message about the value we give to good looks and beauty.

Ideal for: analytical readers, classics lovers & people who have existential thoughts.

Revista digital 2024, primera edición. Día Internacional de la literatura. 40

“The Stranger”

This book starts and ends tragically. Actually, the whole book is a chain of tragic events that we as readers get to witness the reaction of the protagonist to all of these unexpected events.

The first line of the book is “Mother died today”, and as you read it you wonder what the protagonist's reaction will be because you don't know, but you assume to a certain point that he will be sad, mourning or just generally disappointed by this tragedy. Instead of this, the character takes it nonchalantly, as if somebody had bumped into him in the street and said “sorry” and when the interaction ends, he has no feelings toward it.

This first lie sets the tone for the whole book, which is unsettling and confusing; it makes you question the sanity of the protagonist and wonder why people expect a certain reaction to specific events and what societal norms set these “standard” reactions.

Ideal for: sociology lovers, psychology connoisseurs & people who love to question human behavior.

Shot glass of tears
“Shot Glass of Tears”, by Purple

Shot glass of tears.

Her glass is empty, dry, and bare, No alcohol in sight, for she has no appetite, for anything, not even a bite.

But something still lingers within, The feeling of pain and regret,

So she fills her shot glass with tears, And tries to forget.

The tears fill the glass to the brim, A symbol of the depths of her despair,As she downs the bitter fluid, her sorrow grows even more bare.

But there is no relief, no respite, From the thoughts that plague her mind, no amount of liquor can wipe, the memories of the life she left behind. She wonders where it all went wrong,And if there’s a way to fix it all. Yet the tears continue to fill, A symbol of her life’s fall.

So she fills her shot glass yet again

With tears, not spirits for it’s the only thing that makes her feel, something, anything, rather than nothing.

She looks at the shot glass, Full of tears, her only friend, She picks it up, brings it to her lips, Her hands shaking. She spills it out, and it falls on the floor in a puddle, like her life, broken and scattered.

She knows she can't keep going like this, but she feels lost and alone, With no one to turn to, so she fills her shot glass with tears, yet again and drinks herself to sleep, hoping tomorrow will bring a better day.

I want to feast on art like it's my last meal.

I want to read every book until my eyes leave a borehole. I want to explore every crevice of this earth and be one with nature's soul.

I'm hungry for knowledge, and I yearn to learn.

But life is too short to cope with no antidote.

“Thousand lives”

I live in two worlds: One is a world of ordinaries in which a teenage girl navigates through high school. A world populated by characters made of flesh and bone, living in a city bigger than what she could ever know.

This is not a bad world, but the second one is by far superior: I’ve fought the Gods of the Olympian alongside Percy, attended Jay Gatsby’s parties on Long Island, and solved mysteries with Hercules Poirot.

I’ve been a student at Hogwarts, visited Charlie’s Chocolate Factory,

And even experienced being a woman from the English countryside in the 18th century.

A world without books, is one I don’t want to live in. For within their pages lie the keys to countless realms.

“What Remained”

Meeting with the people I assumed were my friends had never been so miserable. Most of the time we got along quite well, at least I believed so.

It was in my knowledge that there was a part of them which didn't seem genuine, no, it simply isn't genuine.

However, i always chose to turn a blind eye on it, trying to focus on the positive. This ignorance of mine leads to the present, where I stand alone as a fool who had been deceived by choosing to trust devious creatures, those monsters that I recently cut off from my life, yet was forever doomed with their opinions bombarding my mind.

As I was returning to my home, my shelter from the outer world, where my privacy remains and the feeling of safety engulfs the domain, I was constantly reminded of all the interactions that had taken place inside of that hellhole, which is one of their houses.

Emotions had invaded my thoughts and soon I didn't comprehend my feelings, but had the urge to cause destruction, meanwhile not having the means to do so.

My brain had turned into an abyss, which soon collapsed when I reached the door and managed to open it, successfully entering the place where no one could see me.

It was then when I realized myself being on the floor, unable to rise to my feet. Crawling to my room I encountered the shattered mirror and stared into my eyes, that were now the same charming shade of the crimson moon.

After a while, I headed towards my refrigerator, and unlocked it. My gaze instantly directed itself towards the most appealing apple I had ever laid my eyes on.

Still, there was a spot that seemed to be rotten, one which I sliced apart with a knife, and observed its blood slowly descend through its own body.

It appeared to be pure once again, so I made up my mind and decided to take a bite.

I was unpleasantly welcomed

with the lingering corruption that had persevered the wound I had made, which I had foolishly thought would eradicate all problems that this apple had, failing to meet my expectations.

My body, already weak, did not succeed to respond to my commands. I was not able to move, frozen on the floor of my home, which proved to be dangerous, contrary to my beliefs.

What was there left if not only my corpse, which still had enough will of its own to live.

Everything that I previously saw one way, turned out to stab me in the back and twist the dagger, leaving me to bleed out. The answer to the question was pretty straightforward. Nothing, nothing remained. Not even I
