Missing Patient

I had been watching TV for a while and started to get bored from the news channel that was currently playing. I decided that I would change this channel to something hopefully more entertaining, but before I had the chance something caught my attention, a loud sound that came from the television in front of me.

“BREAKING NEWS - Missing patient from the world's safest psychiatric hospital.” Was written on the screen. I looked at it carefully. Just the thought of it made me extremely uncomfortable and paranoid, still I tried to remain calm.

“Yesterday an old, stout, blonde woman with schizophrenia escaped the hospital. This woman is Adelaine Scott, a 63 year old female that was a patient in Daffodils Psychiatric Hospital. She

escaped at around two in the morning and as of right now we don't have any information on where she could be nor if she is possibly a threat to other civil ians. Please lock the entrances of your homes, call the authorities if you are able to gather any information and most importantly stay safe”

That hospital was around 5 miles away from my house. I know this because for the past decade of my life I've had people who wanted me to be there, though they never succeeded. I’m not actually mentally ill though, I’m convinced that it was just because they couldn’t stand me. I’m old and annoying, my children and their kids don't want me around anymore. However, I’ve learnt to overcome it .

I couldn't help it and felt someone glaring at me. I turned around immediately and I thought I saw a woman's shadow. Nevertheless, when I checked, there was no one behind me.

While I was thinking about what I just saw, I couldn't help it and felt someone glaring at me. I turned around immediately and I thought I saw a woman's shadow. Nevertheless, when I checked, there was no one behind me. I checked all of the windows and doors in my house to see if there was any sign that perhaps somebody had broken into the house, but there was no evidence. I rapidly locked every possible entry to my home and decided that it was better to just go to sleep because it was getting late. Just as I laid on the pillow I instantly fell into a heavy sleep.

I woke up at what seemed like four in the morning due to a loud noise coming from downstairs, could that be related to what had happened last night? No, I had made sure I locked everything successfully. I convinced myself that I was just paranoid. Yeah! That's it!

“M’ am” That was what I heard when chills ran through my spine. It was the patient who had escaped from the hospital, I was certain.

“M’am, are you upstairs?” I was so nervous. I was terrified. I was too stunned to even move, but I needed to hide immediately.

I heard footsteps coming up the stairs and I decided that the fastest way out of the situation was to hide under the bed. As quietly as possible I crouched down and tried to swiftly get under it.

Just as I'd successfully done it the door creaked open and I faintly heard a woman speaking: “M’am. Are you here? I’m just trying to get you home safely.” What was she talking about? I am already home, surely she will try to kidnap me.

“I’m a nurse in the hospital you reside in and from which you ran away yesterday. You have a mental illness: schizophrenia. You can come out from wherever you are by yourself. I’ll be waiting for you. Anyway we have visitors. In case you don’t know, the police are outside.”

Shot Glass of Tears”

Shot glass of tears.

Her glass is empty, dry, and bare, No alcohol in sight,

For she has no appetite, For anything, not even a bite.

But something still lingers within,

The feeling of pain and regret,

So she fills her shot glass with tears, And tries to forget.

The tears fill the glass to the brim, A symbol of the depths of her despair,

As she downs the bitter fluid, Her sorrow grows even more bare.

But there is no relief, no respite,

From the thoughts that plague her mind, No amount of liquor can wipe,

The memories of the life she left behind.

She wonders where it all went wrong, And if there’s a way to fix it all, Yet the tears continue to fill, A symbol of her life’s fall.

So she fills her shot glass yet again

With tears, not spirits

For it’s the only thing that makes her feel, Something, anything, rather than nothing.

She looks at the shot glass, Full of tears, her only friend, She picks it up, brings it to her lips, Her hands shaking.

She spills it out, And it falls on the floor in a puddle, Like her life, Broken and scattered.

She knows she can't keep going like this, But she feels lost and alone, With no one to turn to, So she fills her shot glass with tears, yet again

And drinks herself to sleep, Hoping tomorrow will bring a better day.
