Η Robin S μάς προσκαλεί στο dance floor για να χορέψουμε για την υπέρτατη ανθρώπινη ανάγκη: το να μας δείξει κάποιος την αγάπη του. What I need is somebody who really cares, τα μάτια κλειστά και τα σώματά μας κινούνται ελεύθερα αντιδρώντας στην καθημερινότητα που μοιάζει σκληρή και άκαμπτη. Rave, νέον χρώματα, αγγίγματα, αγκαλιές.

Τα dancefloors έχουν μάλλον ατονίσει και ο γνώριμος ήχος από τα έγκατα των 90s ακούγεται σήμερα πιο σύγχρονος από ποτέ. Ενα τέταρτο του αιώνα μετά, η αγάπη παραμένει το απόλυτο αγαθό μόνο που την αποζητούμε πια σε οθόνες, εφαρμογές, αλγόριθμους. Τα αγγίγματα έχουν γίνει taps και swipes, οι αγκαλιές emojis. Κι όμως… τo σπαρακτικό κάλεσμα της Robin S να της δείξουμε λίγη αγάπη εισχωρεί πιο βαθιά στην καρδιά μας.

Πριν λίγες μέρες. Έκλεψα μισή ώρα από το πρόγραμμα του δημοσιογραφικού ταξιδιού. Πήγα στο κοντινότερο κατάστημα και αγόρασα ένα μαγιό, Οκτώβριο μήνα. Ανέβηκα στον τελευταίο όροφο του ξενοδοχείου και έφτασα στη θερμαινόμενη πισίνα. Μια νεαρή instructor έδινε οδηγίες στην λιγότερο νεαρή κυρία σε σπαστά Αγγλικά. Η λιγότερο νεαρή κυρία προσπαθούσε να κάνει τις ασκήσεις μέσα στο νερό όσο πιο καλά μπορούσε. Ξαφνικά φώναξε, look και έδειξε προς την γυάλινη οροφή. Ενα σμήνος από πουλιά περνούσε ξυστά από πάνω μας, έφευγε και ξαναρχόταν, σαν σε χορογραφία. Μείναμε και οι τρεις να κοιτάμε ψηλά, να χαζεύουμε τον χορό τους. Μέχρι που σκοτείνιασε...

πιο γοητευτική δεκαετία στυλιστικά είναι αναμφίβολα αυτή των 90s. Είτε την έχεις ζήσει ως έφηβος, είτε την ακολουθούσες ως παιδί το μόνο σίγουρο είναι ότι σήμερα την αποθεώνουμε όλοι ως το ισχυρότερο trend για το 2018. Το AZTREK, το νέο sneaker της Reebok Classic είναι η μεγαλύτερη και ομολογούμενως η καλύτερη απόδειξη όλων αυτών.

Video games, pacman, neon χρώματα και dance till you drop βραδιές με brit pop τραγούδια ή rave anthems! H δεκαετία του ’90 ανέδειξε με μοναδικό τρόπο την μουσική, τη μόδα και το street culture χαρίζοντας μερικά από το ωραιότερα street stlye looks μέχρι και σήμερα. Φανταστείτε, λοιπόν, ένα αντίστοιχο σκηνικό και βρεθείτε νοερά μαζί μας σε club του Λονδίνου back in 1993. Kαι όμως είναι 2018 και είμαστε στο Southbank του βρετανικής πρωτεύουσας σε ένα υπερ-φανταστικό πάρτυ που διοργάνωσε η Reebok Classic με θέμα “Re-Run The 90’s”. Retro TV screens με blast from the past βιντεάκια, συλλεκτικά fashion items της 90s collection, ουρές στα arcade game consoles για pacman, tetris και άλλα παιχνίδια και κοκτέηλ δημοφιλή της δεκαετίας συνέθεταν το πιο 90s σκηνικό που είδαμε ποτέ. Στον επάνω όροφο μας περίμενε ένα στούντιο φωτογράφησης από πιο cool βρετανικό περιοδικό, του οποίου οι στυλίστες είχαν καταφέρει να συγκεντρώσουν δεκάδες 90s vintage Reebok ρούχα και αξεσουάρ και μας φωτογράφισαν στο “εφηβικό” μας δωμάτιο δημιουργώντας ένα μεγαλειώδες flashback στη μνήμη μας! Ενα level πιο ψηλά, μας περίμενε το απόλυτο rave-feel πάρτυ με 90s dance beats όπου πρωταγωνιστής της βραδιάς ήταν το πιο εμβληματικό old school sneaker της Reebok, το Aztrek OG. Το Aztrek δημιουργήθηκε το 1993 και έκανε τη Reebok ένα από τα πιο ισχυρά brands στο running. Σήμερα, το Aztrek κάνει την επανεμφάνισή του ενισχύοντας το όραμα της Reebok που είναι να εμπνεύσει και να παρακινήσει τους fans της να κάνει ο καθένας το δικό του breakthrough, ακολουθώντας το δικό του μονοπάτι. Kαι η αλήθεια είναι ότι εμείς ως ΟΖΟΝ ακολουθούμε το δικό μας μονοπάτι σταθερά. Το νέο Aztrek διατηρεί στοιχεία από τη σχεδιαστική κληρονομιά του αλλά μας αρέσει ακόμα πιο πολύ γιατί παρουσιάζεται με ένα δικό του σύγχρονο twist που εκφράζει το τις ανάγκες του σήμερα: η μεγάλη σόλα και η τεχνολογία Hexalite παραμένουν, όπως και το λευκό πάνω μέρος, το logo σε μαύρο για να κάνει αντίθεση καθώς και οι ανακλαστικές 3Μ λεπτομέρειες και τα έντονα χρώματα. Μεσαία σόλα με κινούμενα πλαίσια και έντονα σχέδια στην εξωτερική σόλα συμπληρώνουν το look και εξασφαλίζουν ότι αυτό το off-road running παπούτσι είναι το απόλυτο fashion statement της σεζόν. he 90s were, without a doubt, the most charming years fashion-wise. Whether you lived during these years as a teenager or you swooned at them as a child, one thing is for sure: the 90s are back, they are the hottest trend right now. This is evident by looking at, AZTREK, Reebok Classic’s new sneaker.

Video Games, pacman, neon colors and dance-tillyou-drop nights under the sounds of brit pop and rave anthems! The 90s had the most iconic music, fashion and street culture moments. Many of the street style looks trending at the time are still relevant! Now close your eyes and imagine being with us in a London club back in 1993. Only it’s 2018 and we’re at the Southbank of the british capital, at the awesome “Re-Run the 90’s” party Reebok Classic threw. Retro TV screens playing blast-from-the-past videos, collectible fashion pieces from the original 90’s collection, endless queues for a tetris arcade game and popular cocktails from our favourite decade pulled the 90s-est themed party ever together. Moving on to the upper floor there was a very special photoshoot. Britain’s coolest magazine’s stylists had managed to collect dozens of 90’s vintage Reebok clothes and accessories, so we were photographed in “our teenage” room. What a flashback!

One level higher, there was an actual rave style party going on, starring the iconic old school Reebok’s sneaker, the Aztrek OG. This sneaker was created back in 1993 and made Reebok one of the most influencial sportswear brands. Today, in 2018, the Aztrek is making a comeback, promoting Reebok’s vision- which is to inspire the brand’s fans to make their own breakthrough, following their own path. Truth be told, we at OZON are always following our own path.

UNFORGETTABLE WORDS BY OLGA KOUTROUMANOU

α ‘90s είναι μια δεκαετία που λατρεύουμε. Και αυτό όχι μόνο γιατί μας εμπνέουν στυλιστικά, αλλά και γιατί βρίσκουν πάντα ένα τρόπο να επανέρχονται στην επικαιρότητα γεμίζοντάς μας με νοσταλγική διάθεση. Τραγούδι αυτού του τεύχους είναι το “Show me love” της Robin S., κομμάτι του 1993 που ακούγεται μέχρι σήμερα και έχει τόσα remix, που και να θέλαμε, δεν μπορούμε να το ξεχάσουμε. Η Robin Stonewall, όπως είναι ολόκληρο το όνομά της, ήταν μητέρα δυο παιδιών και δούλευε ως γραμματέας στη Νέα Υόρκη. Τα Σαββατοκύριακα τραγουδούσε σε ένα RnB συγκρότημα και όλα έμελλε να αλλάξουν στη ζωή της όταν μια μέρα της ζητήθηκε να ηχογραφήσει αυτό το τραγούδι. Το track πρωτοκυκλοφόρησε το 1990 και η αρχική ηχογράφηση κατέληξε σε αποτυχία. Το τραγούδι έμεινε στην αφάνεια μέχρι το 1992 όταν ο dj και παραγωγός StoneBridge έφτιαξε το remix του, εμπλουτισμένο με πολύ μπάσο και house ήχους. Το “Show me love” έκτοτε αποτέλεσε το πρώτο house τραγούδι που έφτασε στο νούμερο 5 στο Billboard Hot 100 και μαζί με την διεθνή επιτυχία που ακολούθησε κατά κάποιο τρόπο έφερε την house μουσική πιο κοντά στο ευρύτερο κοινό κάνοντάς την mainstream. Το τραγούδι εξαπλώθηκε από dj σε dj και η Robin ξεκίνησε τις τηλεοπτικές εμφανίσεις. Το “Show me love” αποτελεί την μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία της και νούμερο 1 κομμάτι στην κατηγορία Dance club chart του 1993. Eίναι το απόλυτο dance anthem τόσο για τα λονδρέζικα πάρτι όσο και για εμάς εδώ στην Ελλάδα. Έχει εμπνεύσει σύγχρονους καλλιτέχνες όπως την Kiesza με το “Hideaway” και το συγκρότημα Clean Bandit ενώ έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί τροποποιημένο σε πολλά νέα τραγούδια. Το πιο γνωστό του remix είναι αυτό των Swedish House Mafia, που κυκλοφόρησε το 2008 και ακούγεται σε house πάρτι μέχρι και σήμερα, αλλά και το “Don’t wanna go home” του Jason Derulo που χρησιμοποίησε στοιχεία του ως αναφορά. Δεν επιλέξαμε τυχαία το “Show me love” για αυτό το τεύχος, ούτε και το Aztreκ μοντέλο της Reebok Classic για το εξώφυλλό μας, sneaker που επίσης πρωτοεμφανίστηκε το 1993! Άλλωστε, οι πρώτοι μήνες του φθινοπώρου συμβολίζουν την νοσταλγία, την αλλαγή και την ανανέωση. Δείξτε λοιπόν αγάπη σε όλα εκείνα τα μικρά πράγματα που σας γεμίζουν, σε νέα ξεκινήματα αλλά και σε ανθρώπους που δεν θα χαθούν την επόμενη μέρα. Όπως λένε και οι στίχοι: What I need is somebody/Who really cares/I really need a lover/A lover that wants to be there.

h how we adore the 90’s. Not only because it was the most inspirational decade as far as fashion is concerned, but mainly because it keeps coming back as a trend, filling our hearts with nostalgia. This issue’s song is “Show me love” by Robin S., an unforgettable 1993 track that we don’t seem to let go of!

Robin Stonewall, as is her full name, was a mother of two at the time. She was working as a secretary, but on the weekends she was singing for a RnB band. A fatefull day she was asked to record a song bound to change her whole life. When the track was first released on 1990 it turned out to be a failure… Two years later, dj and producer StoneBridge made the very first “Show me Love” remix, adding a touch of house tunes and a whole lot of bass. Since then, this song was the first ever house song to make it to the top 5 at Billboard’s Hot 100 and after its international success one can say that it was the purveyor of the mainstream house music.

The song was getting more and more popularity, and Robin started making appearances on national television. “Show me love” was the biggest hit and number 1 at the ‘93 dance club chart. It was (and still is to this day) the ultimate dance anthem both for London and Athens based parties. This song-prodigy has inspired many artists, including Kiesza and her song “Hideaway”, Clean Bandit, while samples of it are still being used in many new songs. You may have heard its latest remix by the Swedish House Mafia (in 2008), or recognise a “Show me Love” reference in “Don’t wanna go home” by Jason Derulo.

Choosing “Show me love” for this issue was anything but random, neither was picking the (also debuted in 1993) Aztrek Reebok Classic as the cover. The first autumnal months embody both nostalgia and change. So show your love to all these little things that make you feel whole, to new beginnings and to people that want to be there with you. As Robin says: What I need is somebody/Who really cares/I really need a lover/A lover that wants to be there.

Με τεράστια επιτυχία ολοκληρώθηκε το The Fashion Room Service-Spring Edition, το οποίο διοργανώθηκε για δεύτερη συνεχόμενη χρονιά στο ξενοδοχείο-σύμβολο Hilton Athens Hotel. Η προσέλευση του κόσμου ήταν πιο εντυπωσιακή από ποτέ με τους λάτρεις της μόδας να βλέπουν από κοντά 28 διαφορετικούς «κόσμους», όπως διαμορφώθηκαν από τους designers μέσα στα δωμάτια του 9ου ορόφου.

ο fashion κοινό της πόλης παρακολούθησε live activation με το μοναδικό SAKE TATTOO CREW να σχεδιάζει custom-made δημιουργίες πάνω στα αγαπημένα μοντέλα καπέλων της εταιρείας NEW ERA GREECE και έκανε τις πιο δροσιστικές στάσεις στο TUBORG ROOM, για να δοκιμάσει τις 3 γεύσεις: Tuborg Lemon Soda, Tuborg Lime-Green Tea Soda & Tuborg Orange-Cinnamon Soda. The Fashion Room Service-Spring Edition was held at Hilton Symbol Hotel for the second time and proved to be a great success! Participation was massive, more impressive than ever, and fashion enthusiasts had the chance to immerse in 28 different worlds, as they were created by the designers in the rearranged rooms of the 9th floor.

he town’s entire fashion crowd had the opportunity to watch live painting, in which members of the infamous, unique SAKE TATTOO CREW designed custom made artwork on our absolute favorite hats by NEW ERA Greece. At the same time, our special guests could stop by the refreshing stand of TUBORG ROOM to try the 3 TUBORG flavours: Tuborg Lemon Soda, Tuborg Lime-Green Tea Soda & Tuborg Orange-Cinnamon Soda.

The stroll on the 9th floor also included a tour in the following rooms: KOMONO, URBAN OWL, NEW CULT BRANDS, PELICAN VICE, BORD DE L’EAU DESIGN FACTORY, MY BLING, NOILENCE, MVM, BAGISM, HEARTBEATINK GOLD LABEL, AETHER, KORES, SUPERLORA, PESTEMAL, ANDREOU FASHION, FILA, OZON BOUTIQUE, WHITE22, 19.02, DEBBIE TZIMA, ART& INDUSTRY, CLON8 & THEANO G. Ο Ελληνοαμερικανός Φώτης Γιοβάνης είναι ο ιδιοκτήτης της γκαλερί Callicoon Fine Arts της Νέας Υόρκης, που έκανε το ντεμπούτο της στην πρόσφατη Art Athina.

ι σε έφερε στην Art Athina? Είμαι ενθουσιασμένος με αυτή την ευκαιρία που μου δόθηκε να προσεγγίσω το φιλότεχνο κοινό της Ελλάδας και πιο συγκεκριμένα συλλέκτες και συναδέλφους μου, καθώς και καλλιτέχνες που ζουν και εργάζονται στην Αθήνα. Σε προσωπικό επίπεδο, έχει ιδιαίτερη σημασία για μένα ως Έλληνας γεννημένος στην Αμερική να αναπτύξω έναν δεσμό με τον τόπο απ’όπου κατάγεται η οικογένειά μου. Ο ελληνικός πολιτισμός είναι κομμάτι της ανατροφής μου την ίδια στιγμή που η Ελλάδα φαντάζει ως κάτι πολύ μακρινό. Συνειδητοποίησα, όμως, σχετικά πρόσφατα ότι αυτό αποτελεί κομμάτι της ελληνικής εμπειρίας, αυτό το αίσθημα της ξενιτιάς, το να νιώθεις ξένος, αποξενωμένος από τις ρίζες σου. Το αποδέχομαι αυτό το συναίσθημα αλλά παράλληλα θέλω πολύ να έρθω όσο πιο κοντά γίνεται σε αυτό το μέρος που φαντάζει τόσο μακρινό. Η Callicoon Fine Arts ξεκίνησε βόρεια της Νέας Υόρκης, απ’όπου και πήρε το όνομά της. Πες μας δυο λόγια για την ιστορία της γκαλερί και την απόφασή σου να μετακομίσεις στη Νέα Υόρκη. Άνοιξα την γκαλερί το Μάιο του 2009 σε μια περίοδο πολύ απαισιόδοξη για την Αμερική. Ήταν η περίοδος της οικονομικής κρίσης, η αρχή της «μεγάλης ύφεσης», όπως λέμε. Πάντα έμενα στη Νέα Υόρκη, αλλά κατάφερα να βρω έναν μικρό χώρο βόρεια, όπου και άνοιξα την γκαλερί, η οποία λειτουργούσε μόνο το Σαββατοκύριακο. Η αρχική μου ιδέα ήταν ότι αν είχα έναν μικρό σχετικά χώρο και πουλούσα έργα σε χαρτί, που δεν θα ήταν τόσο ακριβά, θα έκανα πωλήσεις. Γρήγορα, όμως, ανακάλυψα ότι δεν λειτουργούν έτσι τα πράγματα και πως αξίζει περισσότερο να δουλεύεις μαζί με τους καλλιτέχνες και να τους βοηθάς να πραγματοποιούν τις ιδέες τους. Ξεκίνησα λοιπόν να διοργανώνω ατομικές εκθέσεις και μετέφερα την γκαλερί στην περιοχή Lower East Side. Τι παρουσίασες στην Art Athina; Παρουσίασα έργα τριών καλλιτεχνών. Ο μικρότερος σε ηλικία, ο Khalil Robert Irving, είναι Αφροαμερικάνος από το Σαιντ Λούις και ασχολείται κατά κύριο λόγο με την κεραμική και την πορσελάνη. Πρόκειται για ένα υλικό που κατέφθασε σε μας μέσα από μια μακρά διαδικασία πολλών αιώνων αποικιοκρατίας και το οποίο απεικονίζει τις ρατσιστικές δομές με τις οποίες ζούμε ακόμα και σήμερα. Αυτές οι όμορφες και παράλληλα ανώμαλες κεραμικές μάζες, που μοιάζουν με θραύσματα και είναι διακοσμημένες με εικόνες λουλουδιών και μοτίβα, φέρουν μια αναμνηστική λειτουργία που μας βοηθά να μιλήσουμε για ζητήματα φυλετικών διακρίσεων, καθώς και για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο αυτά τα προβλήματα αναδύονται μέσα από την ιστορία. Με έναν τρόπο -για τον Khalil αλλά και για τις άλλες δύο καλλιτέχνιδες που παρουσίασα, την Etel Adnan και την Ulrike Müller- η ομορφιά και η δημιουργικότητα, η απόλαυση και η πιθανότητά της, συνυπάρχουν με αυτά τα πολύπλοκα ζητήματα. Στα κείμενά της η Etel Adnan έχει ασχοληθεί με κάποιες πολύ τραυματικές στιγμές της ιστορίας μας. Η ζωγραφική της και ιδιαίτερα ο πίνακας που έφερα στην Art Athina φέρνει στο νου ένα μέρος της φαντασίας, παρόλο που πρόκειται για ένα πραγματικό μέρος. Σου δίνει αυτή την αίσθηση του ανοιχτού και του πιθανού. Εντέλει, έφερα έργα σε χαρτί και πίνακες από σμάλτο της Αυστριακής Ulrike Müller, που ασχολείται με ερωτήματα γύρω από την έννοια του μοντερνισμού. Χρησιμοποιώντας ως βασικό υλικό το σμάλτο, που συχνά συνδέεται με τη βιομηχανία, τη σήμανση και την οικιακή σφαίρα, η Ulrike αναπτύσσει ένα φορμαλιστικό λεξιλόγιο και προσπαθεί να επιχειρηματολογήσει για έναν μοντερνισμό που επιστρέφει στα ουτοπικά του ιδεώδη.

An American of Greek descent, Photios Giovanis is the owner of Callicoon Fine Arts, an art gallery in New York that will debut at Art Athina this year.

W

hat brings you to Art Athina?

I am excited for the opportunity to reach out to an art loving audience in Greece, particularly collectors, artists and my colleagues in Athens. On a personal level, it is significant for me as a Greek American to bond with the place of my family’s origin. Greek culture is part of my upbringing but at the same time Greece feels very far away. I’ve realized more recently that this is part of the Greek experience, like “xenitia,” being a foreigner, being estranged from your own origins.

I embrace this feeling but I also really want to move closer to this place that feels far away.

You started Callicoon Fine Arts in upstate New York, where the gallery also took its name from. Tell us a bit about the history of the gallery and your decision to relocate to New York City.

I opened the gallery in May 2009. This was a very pessimistic time in the US. The financial crisis was happening and it was the beginning of what we called the “great recession.” I always lived in New York City, but I was able to get a small space in upstate New York and the gallery was open only on Saturday and Sunday. My initial idea was that if I had a very modest space and sold inexpensive works on paper, people would buy them.

I discovered very quickly that it doesn’t work that way and that it’s more worthwhile to work with artists to help them realize their ideas. So I started doing solo exhibitions and I moved the gallery to the Lower East Side.

What did visitors see at your booth in Art Athina?

I brought work by three artists. The youngest artist, Khalil Robert Irving, is an artist from St. Louis working primarily with ceramics and porcelain. This is a material that has travelled through a centuries-long process of colonialism, and illustrates racist structures that we still live with. Beautiful, rough, fragmentedlooking ceramic masses decorated with images of flowers or patterns serve a kind of commemorative function to talk about racial injustice and how these problems emerged from this history. There is a way that — for Khalil and for the other artists I also brought, Etel Adnan and Ulrike Müller — beauty and creativity, the pleasure and the possibility of that, operate in tandem with these complex issues. In her writing, Etel Adnan has dealt with very traumatic moments in our history. Her painting, in particular a painting that I brought to Art Athina, evokes a place of the imagination even though it is also a real place. You get the sense of openness and possibility. Finally, I’ll bring works on paper and enamel paintings by Ulrike Müller, an Austrian artist that engages with questions of modernity. She is developing a formal vocabulary using enamel — which has been associated with industry, signage, and the domestic sphere — and trying to make an argument for a modernism that returns back to its utopian ideals. callicoonfinearts.com

DIMITRA SELEMIDOU LOVE FOR SINGING

Ξεκινά το 2014 από τη Φλώρινα, την πόλη που μεγάλωσε, για να έρθει να σπουδάσει Ιατρική στην Αθήνα. Παράλληλα, συμμετέχει ερμηνευτικά στη δισκογραφική παρουσίαση των διακριθέντων Τέταρτης Ακρόασης της Μικρής Άρκτου, κάνοντας έτσι την πρώτη της εμφάνιση στην ελληνική δισκογραφία. Το 2017 ξεκινά συνεργασία με το Ίδρυμα Μάνος Χατζιδάκις για ένα μεγάλο αφιέρωμα στο έργου του Έλληνα μουσικού, ενώ έχει ήδη παρουσιάσει τρεις ολοκληρωμένες δισκογραφικές δουλειές. Στους κύκλους της μουσικής βιομηχανίας ψιθυρίζουν πως πρόκειται για μια καλλιτέχνιδα που αρχίζει να καταλαμβάνει σημαντική θέση στην τέχνη της. Η ίδια φαίνεται να αδιαφορεί, απολαμβάνοντας απλώς τη μεγάλη της αγάπη, το τραγούδι.

Everything started in 2014 in Florina, where she grew up and then came to Athens to study medicine. At the same time, she participated in the record presentation of distinguished artists in the fourth Hearing of Mikri Arktos.

In 2017 she cooperated with Manos Hadjidakis’ Foundation, regarding a grand tribute in the work of the great Greek musician and she has already presented three complete recordings. Among the music industry peers, people keep whispering that she is a well-received and respected artist, claiming an important position in the field. However, she seems quite indifferent to what they say about her and enjoys her absolute passion: singing!

ρισκόμαστε στην Εναλλακτική σκηνή της Λυρικής Σκηνής και μόλις ολοκληρώθηκαν οι παραστάσεις για το αφιέρωμα στον Μάνο Χατζιδάκι και το έργο του «Μυθολογία». Πώς σου φάνηκε αυτή η μουσική εμπειρία; Η μελέτη της Μυθολογίας από μόνη της υπήρξε πολύτιμη. Πρόκειται για ένα έργο του Μάνου Χατζιδάκι και του Νίκου Γκάτσου με αστείρευτο μουσικό και ποιητικό πλούτο και σε κάθε δοκιμή μου επιφύλασσε μια νέα ανακάλυψη και ένα σημαντικό μάθημα. Δεν θα μπορούσα ακόμη να μην αναφερθώ στους εκλεκτούς μουσικούς συντελεστές. Οι στιγμές που έζησα όταν άκουγα το έργο να ζωντανεύει πλέον ενορχηστρωμένο ήταν από τις πιο συγκινητικές που θα κρατήσω. Κάθε παράσταση ήδη από τις πρώτες νότες των Δεκαπέντε Εσπερινών στο πρώτο μέρος, ήταν ένα μαγικό ταξίδι στον κόσμο του Μάνου Χατζιδάκι, κάτι που ένιωσα να εισπράττει ο κόσμος που βρέθηκε κοντά μας. Αισθάνομαι απέραντη ευγνωμοσύνη προς όλους τους συνεργάτες για την εμπιστοσύνη, τη στήριξη και τη ζεστασιά. Είσαι μόλις είκοσι ενός ετών και ορίστηκες ως η φωνή για το συγκεκριμένο, αλλά και για προηγούμενα σχετικά αφιερώματα. Νιώθεις ευθύνη; Αναμφίβολα, η ευθύνη της ερμηνείας είναι μεγάλη, χωρίς όμως να αντιμάχεται την αγάπη, το πάθος και το πείσμα που επιστρατεύω προκειμένου να υπηρετήσω το έργο του Μάνου Χατζιδάκι με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο. Έχοντας μεγαλώσει σε ένα σπίτι γεμάτο από τις μουσικές του, νιώθω μια βαθιά συγγένεια με αυτές όπως και με τον λόγο του Νίκου Γκάτσου. Η απουσία του δημιουργού σαφώς μεγεθύνει την ευθύνη και αυτό ισχύει πάντοτε. Ωστόσο, ο Μάνος με τη μεθοδικότητα της δουλειάς φωτίζει τα μονοπάτια των κομματιών σαν να είχε προβλέψει για όσους θα ταξιδέψουν σε αυτά αφού θα έχει φύγει. Όπως είπε κάποια στιγμή ο Γιώργος Χατζιδάκις, ο Μάνος κατόρθωνε να αποτυπώνει μια ξεχωριστή μαγεία στη δουλειά του, όχι απλώς γιατί τον διέκρινε κάτι το υπερφυσικό όπως πολύ νομίζουν, αλλά γιατί ταυτόχρονα εργαζόταν σκληρά για να πετυχαίνει το τόσο άρτιο αποτέλεσμα που κατέγραφε, παρουσίαζε και ηχογραφούσε. Είμαι ευτυχής, φυσικά, που έχω κοντά μου ανθρώπους όπως ο Γιώργος Χατζιδάκις αλλά και η δασκάλα μου, Έλλη Πασπαλά, που με βοηθούν να κατανοήσω πολλά περισσότερα από όσα θα μπορούσα υπό άλλες συνθήκες ως προς το ίδιο το έργο αλλά και ως προς τον τρόπο που εργαζόταν ο Μάνος.

e are in the Alternative stage of the Greek National Opera and the tribute shows for Manos Hadjidakis’ and his work titled “Mythology” were just completed. How did you find this musical experience?

The study of Mythology is precious by default. It’s a work of art by Manos Hadjidakis and Nikos Gatsos, surrounded by endless humor and “poetic richness”. Each attempt to approach this, retained some new discovery and a great lesson for me.

I couldn’t refrain from mentioning our distinguished musical company. When I heard the play come to life, orchestrated at last, I experienced feelings of such astonishing emotional fervor and I keep those moments very close to my heart. Every time, even after the first few notes of “Fifteen Vespertines”, every show was a magical journey into the world of Manos Hadjidakis. I felt it reaching the audience, the people who came close to us and joined in.

The audience could sense it. I feel so blessed for having the opportunity to work closely with all those wonderful people, who showed their trust, support and warmth.

At just 21 years old, you were designated to be the voice performing this masterpiece and other relevant tributes. Do you feel like this is a great responsibility?

Undoubtedly, the responsibility of an artistic interpreter and performer is immense but the responsibility doesn’t detract the least bit of love, passion and persistence that I apply to serve the work of Manos Hadjidakis to the best of my ability. Having grown up in a house filled with his musical melodies, I feel like I have a personal relationship and deep relatedness with the melodies, as well as with Nikos Gatsos’ oration. The absence of the creator is definitely increasing the factor of responsibility and this is always the case.

However, Manos, with his methodical way of working, lights up the way for us to understand and interpret his pieces, as if he had foreseen the difficulty Καθ’όλη τη διάρκεια της προετοιμασίας μελέτησες αρκετά τη «Μυθολο- for those who would enter his world long after he was gone. Πώς ήταν η συνεργασία σας; Τι σε συμβούλεψε και τι αποκόμισες από τον άνθρωπο που ξέρει καλά τόσο το έργο όσο και τον ίδιο τον Μάνο Χατζιδάκι; Μελέτησα τη Μυθολογία ήδη από τους τελευταίους μήνες του περασμένου χρόνου υπό το άγρυπνο βλέμμα του Γιώργου Χατζιδάκι που με βοήθησε να ξεκλειδώσω κάποια σημεία που με δυσκόλευαν. Συζητούσαμε πάντοτε τους προβληματισμούς μου και ανταλλάσσαμε σκέψεις. Στάθηκε δίπλα μου εξηγώντας μου ποια ήταν η αίσθηση που ο συνθέτης είχε για κάθε τραγούδι, για κάθε πρόσωπο, για κάθε φράση. Μου υπέδειξε συστατικά της ερμηνείας του Γιώργου Ρωμανού που μπορεί να μην είχα παρατηρήσει, αλλά ήταν άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένα με το έργο και έπρεπε να τα υιοθετήσω, μου μίλησε για το πώς δούλεψαν το συγκεκριμένο έργο με τον Νίκο Γκάτσο. Οι ιστορίες είναι ατελείωτες και μεγάλος θησαυρός! Είμαι ευγνώμων για τη συνεργασία μας που ξεκίνησε λίγους μήνες νωρίτερα με το έργο «Ελλάς, η χώρα των ονείρων”, που παρουσιάσαμε στο Ηρώδειο. Λειτούργησε για εμένα πολύ εποικοδομητικά και εκπλήρωσε μερικά από τα πιο μεγάλα μου όνειρα. Η παρουσίαση της πρώτης προσωπικής σου δισκογραφίας «Τρίτη Έξοδος» ολοκληρώθηκε το 2017 και παρουσιάστηκε στο πλαίσιο του Athens Pride, με το τραγούδι «Μαμά, Μπαμπά». Ποια είναι η θέση σου απέναντι σε αυτό τον θεσμό; Γιατί επιλέξατε το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι γι’ αυτή την περίσταση; Η «τρίτη έξοδος» είναι ένας κύκλος εννέα τραγουδιών που υπογράφουν ο στιχουργός Γιάννης Βασιλόπουλος και ο συνθέτης Σπύρος Παρασκευάκος. Πρόκειται για έναν δίσκο που μιλάει για τη συναισθηματική διαδικασία της ενηλικίωσης με την οποία κάθε άνθρωπος άσχετα από τη βιολογική του ηλικία ξεκινάει να χαράζει αυτόβουλα την προσωπικότητα και την πορεία του. Ο δίσκος χτίστηκε με ακρογωνιαίο λίθο το «Μαμά, μπαμπά». Πρόκειται για ένα τραγούδι που μιλάει για την ανάγκη της εσωτερικής μας ελευθερίας, του αυτοπροσδιορισμού και της αποδοχής, ένα τραγούδι που σκιαγραφεί την αναθεώρηση των σχέσεων με τους ανθρώπους που σε έναν βαθμό μας διαμόρφωσαν. Επιλέξαμε συνειδητά με τον Γιάννη και τον Σπύρο να βρεθούμε στο Pride για να μοιραστούμε αποκλειστικά αυτό το κομμάτι, θεωρώντας πως για όλα τα στοιχεία που το απαρτίζουν είχε αξία να ακουστεί στο πλαίσιο αυτής της γιορτής. Προσωπικά ονειρεύομαι το μέλλον που δεν θα έχει ανάγκη αντίστοιχων θεσμών, όπου κάθε μέλος της κοινωνίας θα αντιλαμβάνεται τον πλούτο της διαφορετικότητας και θα τη γιορτάζει έμπρακτα καθημερινά. Μέχρι τότε όμως η τέχνη ας δίνει ηχηρό παρόν και ουσία στην προσπάθεια για την κατάρριψη των ανισοτήτων.

T

hroughout this preparatory phase you studied the work of “Mythology” closely. What are the basic concepts touched on and analyzed in this creation?

Well, it’s a cycle of twelve pieces of music, in which every song corresponds to a different story. Sometimes as a narrative and othertimes as a confession, in a more personal manner.

People and their myths serve as 12 distinct and short roles for the artistic interpreter, who needs to embody and perform. This is one of the most crucial characteristics of this masterpiece, making it a timeless but also very intellectually demanding work to study.

You’ve collaborated with Mr. Giorgos Hadjidakis before on the setting of “Mythology” and he used to lead the artistic direction of the play. How did you work together and cooperate? What was his advice towards you and what did you gain from the person who is so well-acquainted with Manos Hadjidakis’ works and personality?

I’ve been studying “Mythology” since the end of 2017, under constant supervision from Giorgos Hadjidakis, who has helped me unlock some tricky parts. We always used to discuss my concerns and exchanged thoughts productively. He stood by me, explaining the exact sense the composer had for each song, for each face and individual phrase. He also suggested some distinctive attributes of Giorgos Romanos’ performance. Components that I might not have noticed were complementary to the play and he thought I had to adopt them. He talked to me about how they approached and worked on this particular play, along with Nikos Gatsos. The stories are truly endless and a great treasure! I’m so grateful for the chance I had to work with him closely. The starting point for our cooperation was a few months earlier, with the play “Hellas, the country of dreams” that was at presented at Herodeion. It was very beneficial for me and fulfilled some of my greatest, lifelong dreams.

The presentation of your first, personal record “Third Exit” was completed and shown in the framework of Athens Pride 2017, with your song titled “Mom, Dad”. What is your thesis and opinion on this? Why did you choose this particular song for this occasion?

“Third exit” is a series of 9 tracks, by our lyricist Giannis Vasilopoulos and our composer Spyros Paraskevakos. It’s a record about the emotional state of entering adulthood, in which, every single one of us, despite our actual age begins to build his/her own character independently and draws a path for life.

The record was primarily built upon the track “Mom, Dad”. It’s a song about the need to feel liberated from within, about self-definition and acceptance.

A song about rethinking and revisioning our relationships with people who shaped us, in a way and up to a point. We deliberately chose to attend the parade to introduce the track in the context of this celebration. I personally hope and dream of a future that will have no use for such institutions and celebrations, in a society where each member will be able to recognize and respect the variety and riches of diversity, celebrating it in practice every single day! Until then, let the arts give a strong message and make a statement through active and meaningful participation in the attempt to break down inequality.

BY ENDYMA ARCHIVE Ο Μιχαήλ Kαρδαμάκης στα είκοσι πέντε του χρόνια έχει καταφέρει να δημιουργήσει το μεγαλύτερο αρχείο με το έργο του Helmut Lang και να το επικοινωνεί σε όλο τον κόσμο, μέσα από εκθέσεις και παρουσίες στα μεγαλύτερα περιοδικά. Τον συναντήσαμε, μιλήσαμε για αυτή τη σημαντική του προσπάθεια και φωτογραφίσαμε τα highlight κομμάτια του Helmut Lang από τα ‘90s και τις αρχές των ‘00s.

ώς ξεκίνησε η ιδέα για το ENDYMA; Ποιο ήταν το πρώτο ρούχο που αγόρασες για τη συλλογή σου και πόσο καθοριστικό ρόλο έπαιξε στην ιδέα δημιουργίας αυτού του αρχείου; Το ENDYMA γεννήθηκε έξι χρόνια πριν, όταν πήγα στην Αγγλία για να σπουδάσω Ιστορία της Τέχνης. Εκεί άρχισα να αγοράζω για πρώτη φορά ρούχα για μένα, ανακαλύπτοντας σταδιακά τη σημασία του ρούχου για το άτομο, ενώ παράλληλα μάθαινα πώς να κάνω έρευνα και να αναλύω την ιστορία έργων τέχνης. Έτσι, άρχισα να εμβαθύνω περισσότερο στη μόδα, ανακάλυψα τον Helmut Lang και άλλους σχεδιαστές που μου αρέσουν. Όσα ρούχα δεν τα χρειαζόμουν πια, άρχισα να τα πουλάω μέσω eBay. Η διαφορά ήταν πως ο τρόπος που τα παρουσίαζα στο κοινό ήταν επηρεασμένος απο τις σπουδές μου, με εκτενείς περιγραφές για το ύφασμα, την κατασκευή και την ιστορία πίσω από κάθε κομμάτι, αποδίδοντας μια ωραία αισθητική και τελικά καταφέρνοντας να τα δίνω σε μεγαλύτερη από την τιμή που τα αγόρασα. Αυτή η ιδέα άρχισε να αποκτά μεγάλο κοινό στο eΒay και να αποδίδει χρηματικά, και μετά από κάποιο καιρό σκέφτηκα ότι πρέπει να έχει ένα όνομα. Έτσι γεννήθηκε το ENDYMA, σαν ένα reselling project. Michalis Kardamakis at 25 has already managed to create the most well-rounded archives of Helmut Lang’s work, communicating them worldwide, through exhibitions and with a dynamic presence in the most prestigious magazines. We met with him and discussed his significant contribution. At the same time, we also took photos of Helmut Lang’s highlights from the ‘90s and the early ‘00s.

H

ow did you come up with the idea for ENDYMA? What was the first piece of clothing you bought for your collection and how did this affect the concept of creating this archive?

ENDYMA was created 6 years ago when I went to the UK to study History of Art. While I was there I kept buying clothes for myself.

By making sense of the significance they had for the individual and, at the same time, learning how to perform research on analyzing historic works of art, I started going deeper into the fashion industry and I discovered both Helmut Lang and other designers that I like. I even started selling the clothes I had no use for on eBay. The way I used to present them to the public was definitely affected by my studies. I wrote descriptive texts about the fabric, technical details and the history behind each piece. This concept gave a good idea of the aesthetic sense of the clothing and ultimately, helped me in the process of selling the pieces at a price that was more expensive. The idea got popular on eBay and paid off financially. Some time had already passed and then I thought I should give it a name. This is how ENDYMA started off, as a reselling project.

The first piece of clothing I ever bought was in 2010. It was a denim Helmut Lang S/S/2003 cardigan with pieces of black leather scattered on it. Its pattern looked like a very chic industrial suit, while at the same time giving off some sort of punk-ish attitude.

However, there wasn’t one particular piece that made me want to create ENDYMA. Rather, it was built progressively.

You own the largest Helmut Lang collection worldwide. What made Helmut Lang stand out for you?

ENDYMA’s collection consists of about one thousand Helmut Lang pieces today. Among these, some are mere accessories, others are show pieces and decorative items coming from various stores and there are also samples that never managed to reach production lines.

Helmut Lang’s temperament is rather distinctive, his style is very personal and he’s often self-referential. His vision, very specific in fact, was gradually developed from one collection to the next, forming a new and very precise vocabulary. That is why I took such an interest in him: the cohesion in developing a particular aesthetic sense, unfolding in different but complementary ways in each period of his creations. Helmut Lang never followed trends but he maintained and improved his initial ideas almost obsessively. So, every new piece of clothing, is complementary and related to the rest of the collection.

οιες πιστεύεις πως είναι οι νόρμες που έσπασε και ποιοι οι νεωτερισμοί που εισήγαγε ο Lang στη μόδα, που τον όρισαν ως έναν από τους σημαντικότερους σύγχρονους σχεδιαστές; Ποια περίοδό του ξεχωρίζεις; Ο Helmut Lang άλλαξε το tailoring όπως το ξέραμε στα ‘80s, επηρεάζοντας ολόκληρη τη βιομηχανία του ρούχου. hat are the norms, in your opinion, that he broke?

What was the breakthrough Lang introduced in fashion, marking him as one of the most prestigious contemporary designers? Which one of the periods of his work would you highlight?

Helmut Lang transformed tailoring, as we perceived it since the 80’s, affecting the entire retail industry. He created slimmer silhouettes, he started using cheaper fabric, such as nylon and synthetic fiber, especially at a time when fashion requested the use of expensive fabric, such as leather and silk. In terms of aesthetics, his work was revolutionary. He returned to a linear minimalistic approach, when avant-garde was the fashion reign of his time (Kawakubo, Yamamoto, Gaultier). He introduced shapes and textures for clubwear, prefered natural beauty in his shows, used friends on the catwalk and suggested gender mixed shows, forming a new concept in which men and women are similar to one another, exchanging attributes and accessories, as if it was suddenly ok for them to wear each other’s clothes. All this at a time when menswear and womenswear were very different and segregated. He was characterized as a generation X designer since his work is governed by intimacy, a lack of many filters and glam to a point when he reached a distinctive and personal essence.

In reality, I don’t highlight any particular period. Each period has something to add to the value of his creations. I find interesting aspects in every phase and I examine his creations, not only aesthetically, but also taking into consideration the circumstances that are linked to each one of his collections. For example, when Prada Group bought 51% of Lang’s company in 1999, production changed instantly. Around 2002 there is no faith in his work and the company slowly starts breaking down. Helmut Lang’s company has contacted you. Their archive is incomplete and they have asked you for help to complete it.

When Prada sold Helmut Lang to Link Theory Holdings, his archive wasn’t sold as well. So, Helmut Lang company needs to build their historic background from scratch. The truth is that, until recently, they didn’t really care about the legacy of their brand name. So, there was no internal demand for his clothing. Lately, because of a change in their marketing strategy, they are more interested in the brand’s archive, in which they base many of their new designs. They have also issued a line that goes by the name Helmut Lang Re-edition. This line reproduces older Lang’s designs from the 90’s. In their attempt to collect the material, they are searching for collectors worldwide. This is how they contacted me and how our collaboration started.

How do you think the brand has been affected, after Helmut Lang’s exit in 2005? Do you collect pieces from more recent collections as well?

Lang’s clothes may be exhibited in museums today but what we keep forgetting about Helmut Lang is that this is a company that has failed. During the 90’s it led trends but in the 00’s, despite some fashion moments, it didn’t manage to maintain its influential role. Therefore, when Prada sold the company, there was no interest in maintaining Lang’s reputation. The brand consisted of casual clothing, solely women-oriented, a little trendy and similar to Rick Owens’ copies. I do not collect pieces after 2005. However, even after Lang was gone, the brand still had some beautiful pieces and creative voices within its new team.

ώς έχει επιδράσει η τεχνολογία στη σύγχρονη βιομηχανία; Ποιες τυχόν κατασκευαστικές διαφορές εντοπίζονται σε ένα ρούχο του Lang των ‘90s με ένα του 2018; Είναι πολύ μεγάλη κουβέντα, με πολλές διαφορετικές προεκτάσεις. To σίγουρο είναι πως εάν συγκρίνουμε τα ‘90s με το τώρα, κάπου νικά το παρελθόν και κάπου το παρόν. Το πρόβλημα που αντιμετωπίζω με τα παλιά κομμάτια του Helmut Lang, για παράδειγμα, είναι πως σε μερικά από αυτά δοκιμάστηκαν νέα υφάσματα, τα οποία έχουν βελτιωθεί σημαντικά με τον χρόνο. Χαρακτηριστικό είναι το 3M reflective, ένα ύφασμα ασφαλείας που αντανακλά το φως, το οποίο στα χρόνια του Lang φθείρεται πολύ εύκολα, ενώ σήμερα έχει βελτιωθεί αισθητά σαν τεχνοτροπία. Παράλληλα, όμως, ενώ η αντοχή των υλικών έχει εξελιχθεί και οι σχεδιαστές έχουν πλέον περισσότερες επιλογές, η ποιότητα σίγουρα έχει πέσει, διότι η κατασκευή σήμερα έχει πολύ υψηλότερο κόστος προκειμένου να φτάσεις στο ίδιο αποτέλεσμα. Έτσι, αν συγκρίνεις ένα ρούχο του Helmut Lang τότε με τα ρούχα της εταιρείας τώρα, θα παρατηρήσεις πως το φινίρισμα εσωτερικά και κάποιες λεπτομέρειες στο πατρόν, σημάδι ενός έμπειρου κατασκευαστή, πλέον δεν υπάρχουν. Και αυτό συμβαίνει φυσικά σε πολλές άλλες εταιρείες μόδας. Πέρα από τον Helmut Lang, ποιοι άλλοι σχεδιαστές συγκαταλέγονται στο αρχείο σου; Υπάρχει κάποιος από τους νεότερους σχεδιαστές που πιστεύεις πως θα άξιζε να επενδύσεις; Προσπαθώ να έχω διαφορετικές φωνές της ίδιας, όμως, σχολής, και ο κάθε σχεδιαστής να προσθέτει έναν χαρακτήρα στην κατά τα άλλα εναρμονισμένη αισθητική του αρχείου. Από τους βασικούς σχεδιαστές είναι οι Raf Simons και Burberry Prorsum. Εντοπίζουμε πιο προσβάσιμες προσεγγίσεις από σχεδιαστές όπως o John Richmond, ο Jean Colonna, τα αντρικά Miu Miu και η Calvin Klein Collection. Άλλες πιο εγκεφαλικές όπως η Jil Sander, o Giuliano Fujiwara και ο Jurgi Persoons. Και άλλες πιο pop, όπως η Costume National, Xavier Delcour και τα αντρικά Balenciaga. Η αγαπημένη μου σχεδιάστρια αυτή τη στιγμή, που αν είχα το budget θα αγόραζα για το αρχείο, είναι η Natacha Ramsay-Levi για την Chloe, ενώ παρακολουθώ και σέβομαι την προσπάθεια του Craig Green. Αγόραζα και πουλούσα, και με το κέρδος αγόραζα κάτι άλλο. Μέσα σε αυτά τα χρόνια έχει εξελιχθεί σε μια εντελώς βιώσιμη επιχείρηση: χρησιμοποιώ τις πωλήσεις που κάνω για να αγοράσω νέα κομμάτια. Τελευταία έχω αρχίσει να κάνω και κάποια installations στο εξωτερικό, όπως το Totokaelo στη Νέα Υόρκη και το Edition στην Ιαπωνία, όπου τα κομμάτια, πέρα από τον εκθεσιακό τους χαρακτήρα, μπορούν και να πωληθούν. Το ENDYMA έχει και έναν μορφωτικό χαρακτήρα: ταξιδεύει σε εκθέσεις και φέρνει σε επαφή το έργο σχεδιαστών με τον κόσμο. Νιώθεις ευθύνη, κυρίως για το μεγάλο αρχείο του Lang που έχεις στα χέρια σου; Ο μορφωτικός χαρακτήρας σχετίζεται καθαρά με τον προσωπικό μου ενθουσιασμό γι’ αυτό το αντικείμενο, και με το πάθος μου να το μοιράζομαι. Δεν αισθάνομαι ευθύνη, διότι αν και αφιερώνω όλη μου τη μέρα στο έργο του Lang, είναι απλώς ένα ευχάριστο κεφάλαιο στην ιστορία της μόδας. Αυτό έχει μια σημασία αλλά δεν έχει κοινωνική αξία πέρα από τα όρια της βιομηχανίας της μόδας. Η δουλειά μου είναι μια εσωτερική κατανάλωση από ανθρώπους της μόδας προς ανθρώπους της μόδας. Νιώθω πολύ τυχερός που έχω γνωρίσει αξιόλογο κόσμο μέσα από αυτό και έχω κάνει ακόμα και φίλους. Υπάρχει η δουλειά που βγάζει κάποια χρήματα και υπάρχει και μια κάποια υπεραξία που κάνει την δουλειά να αξίζει. Δεν μπορώ απλώς να πουλάω και να αγοράζω ρούχα.

H

as technology affected the contemporary retail industry? How? What are the technical differences you can spot in a Lang 90’s piece compared to a 2018 one?

It’s a big discussion, with many different criteria. The one thing that is for certain is that in any such comparison sometimes the past prevails and, in others, the future does. The problem I’m facing regarding older Helmut Lang pieces is, for instance, they tried new fabrics in some of those pieces. An example is that of 3M reflective, a safety fabric, which reflects the light. In Lang’s time, the fabric was easily worn-out, whereas the way they make it today has made it more sturdy. Simultaneously, even though the endurance of materials has been developed and designers are given more choices, quality has dropped dramatically because production costs for the same results have increased.

Thus, if you compare an old Helmut Lang piece and a new piece by the company, made today, it is obvious that the finishing on the inside and some pattern details -indicating experience and thorough knowledge- are no longer there. This is also the case for many other retail companies.

Besides Helmut Lang, which designers are included in your archive? Is there a new designer that you feel you should invest in?

I generally try to have more than one representative of the same tradition. Each designer will be offering a special attribute to the solid and harmonious composition of the archive. Among the most important designers are, of course, Raf Simons and Burberry Prorsum. We spot more accessible approaches in fashion from designers such as John Richmond, Jean Colonna, MiuMiu menswear and Calvin Klein Collection. Other, more sophisticated brands are Jil Sander, Giuliano Fujiwara and Jurgi Persoons.

More on the pop side, there are approaches by Costume National, Xavier Delcour and Balenciaga menswear. Currently, my favorite designer -and if I had the budget required, I would definitely include her pieces in the archive- is Natacha Ramsay-Levi for Chloe, whereas I also follow and respect Craig Green’s work.

What about the system behind ENDYMA? What makes it a rather profitable business, and not just a hobbie?

As I mentioned earlier, ENDYMA started as an exchange concept, with no capital involved. I was merely buying and selling. When there was some profit, I was using it to buy more.

During this period, it has grown to become a totally sustainable business: I use my selling profit to get new pieces. Lately, though, I am also involved in the making of some installations abroad, like Totokaelo in New York City and Edition in Japan.

There, the pieces can be sold in addition to being exhibited.

ENDYMA entails a literary component as well: it takes people places, through exhibitions and connects people with the designers’ works. Do you feel responsible for Helmut Lang’s huge archive that you own?

This literary component is clearly related to my personal enthusiasm regarding the matter, and my passion in sharing it. I wouldn’t say I feel responsible exactly. Besides dedicating all day to Lang’s work, this is just a really wonderful chapter in the whole history of fashion. It is definitely important but I can’t see the social value or blueprint it leaves, except within the fashion industry. My job is related to internal consumerism from people in the fashion industry to other people in the fashion industry. I consider myself lucky, since I have met very talented and special people through my work and I have even made new friends.

There is one kind of job, the one that gets you money, and there is another kind of job, the one based on goodwill that pays off because of other advantages. I can’t simply buy and sell clothes. endyma.com

Ευγενικά μας επιτρέπει να εισέλθουμε σε έναν κόσμο όμορφο και πλασματικό, όσο μπορεί καμιά φορά να είναι και η ίδια η αλήθεια της τέχνης και της ζωής. When entering his personal webpage, you can see a man standing. His feet step firmly on the ground, his hands are crossed behind his back and his mind is wandering among the stars. He kindly urges us to enter a beautiful and fictitious world, and this world may sometimes be similar to the truth of art and life itself. Twenty-six dolls he designed and built himself, willingly help us connect the pieces of a puzzle, lying scattered in different places, times, seasons, roles, people and facades, leaving us wondering and trying to answer the hardest question: Who is he?

A prominent actor, both in the theater and in the cinema? A successful New York-based hair-stylist, collaborating with some of the most significant magazines worldwide? Or an 11 year-old boy, who still likes to build fictional worlds and being constantly on the move, along with other people who wish to reinvent themselves? Rephrasing a couple of rhymes by the theatrical monologue of Dimitris Dimitriadis «Cassandra’s Annunciation», a play he directed himself at Bageion Theater for the first time ever, could give us the answer we’ve been looking for all along «...no matter how many times you see him, no matter how well you know him, no matter whether he’s always what he is, you have never really seen or known him…»

ε ποια περιοχή της Θεσσαλονίκης γεννήθηκες; Στο κέντρο, κοντά στην Καμάρα.

Ποιες αναμνήσεις έχεις από εκεί; Έχει περίεργη πολεοδομία εκείνη η περιοχή, σε εκείνο το σημείο αρχίζει για τα καλά η ανηφόρα που καταλήγει στην Άνω Πόλη, με τη Ναυαρίνου να κατρακυλά αντίθετα μέχρι τη θάλασσα. Κάθε μέρα αισθανόμουν να ισορροπώ ανάμεσα σε μια ανηφόρα και μια κατηφόρα. Εκεί είδα μικρός και έναν γυμνοσάλιαγκα που δεν τον ξέχασα ποτέ. Πώς θα περιέγραφες την παιδική σου ηλικία; Περνούσα όλο μου τον χρόνο στο δωμάτιό μου με τα βιβλία, τις ταινίες, τις μουσικές μου, φτιάχνοντας κουκλοθέατρα και κάνοντας όνειρα να φύγω μακριά, να εξερευνήσω τον κόσμο και να εφεύρω τον εαυτό μου. Ακόμα αυτό κάνω. Πάντα μοιάζει ότι η ζωή είναι αλλού και ότι είμαι ακόμα 11 χρονών. Ίσως για αυτό είμαι σε μια διαρκή κίνηση. Ποια ήταν τα αγαπημένα σου παιχνίδια όταν ήσουν μικρός; Τα εργαλεία μου, ένα-δύο από αυτά χρησιμοποιώ ακόμα, από τότε. Ένα ψαλίδι και ένα νυστέρι του μπαμπά μου που ήταν γιατρός. Με αυτά έκοψα τη μακέτα του σκηνικού της Κασσάνδρας και με αυτά τα ίδια έφτιαχνα κουκλοθέατρα μικρός, εκατό χρόνια πριν. Παιδικά τραύματα έχεις; Μπα, έλαβα αμέτρητη αγάπη από την οικογένειά μου. Είμαι τυχερός στη ζωή. Στο σχολείο ήμουν αόρατος γιατί ήμουν άχαρος και εσωστρεφής. Δεν είχα φίλους, αλλά δε με ένοιαζε, έκανα μεθοδικά υπομονή να τελειώσει για να ξεκινήσω να ζω.

I

n which region of Thessaloniki were you born originally?

Downtown, near the Kamara area.

What are your memories from this place?

The urban planning of that area is weird. Consider this as the actual spot where the hill begins and the route continues upward until it reaches the Ano Poli area. On the other side, you have Navarinou sliding to the opposite direction, downwards to the sea.

I remember, every day, feeling like I was balancing between an upslope and a downslope. I once saw a slug there and I never forgot about it.

How would you describe your childhood?

I used to spend all my time in my room in the company of books, movies and music, building puppets and dreaming of going further away, to explore the world and to invent myself. I still do that. It always seems to me that life is elsewhere and that I am still 11 years-old. Maybe that is why I’m always restless and on the move.

What about your favorite toys when you were little?

My tools, a couple of which I still use. Scissors and a scalpel that my dad owned as he was a doctor. Using those, I cut the maquette on the stage setting of “Cassandra” and I used the same tools in the past, to build puppets a hundred years ago.

Any childhood trauma?

I wouldn’t say so. I received so much love from my family. I got lucky in life. I was invisible at school, because of my awkward and introvert nature. I had no friends, but I didn’t really matter, as I was methodically waiting for this process to end, so I’d begin to live my life for real.

ίσαι αισιόδοξος; Είμαι αισιόδοξος πως όλα πάνε προς το χειρότερο. Και έτσι πρέπει, για να ξαναρχίσουν με καλύτερο τρόπο και γνώση. Τώρα είναι μόνο λάθος. Αισθάνεσαι ευτυχισμένος; Δεν έχω κανένα παράπονο. Το πάθος σου ποιο είναι; Η κατασκευή πλαστών κόσμων, για να πω την αλήθεια. Να παίζω στο θέατρο και στο σινεμά, γιατί μόνο εκεί μπορώ να είμαι ο εαυτός μου. Μόνο εκεί ζω. Ποια είναι η άποψή σου για την Ελλάδα και τους Έλληνες και γιατί επέστρεψες από την Αμερική; Στην Αμερική, κάνουν αυτό που λένε και ό,τι λένε το κάνουν, χωρίς ζόρια. Και αν δουλέψεις με πάθος και αφοσίωση, νομοτελειακά θα σου δοθεί χώρος και διευκολύνσεις. Στην Ελλάδα οι άνθρωποι δεν είναι ποτέ στην ώρα τους και δεν γίνεται ποτέ το συμφωνηθέν, εκτός μόνο κατόπιν μπάσας φωνής και τσαμπουκά ή αν τους φορτίσεις συναισθηματικά και φιλοτιμηθούν ή αν σε φοβούνται. Το ωραίο στην Ελλάδα είναι ότι εδώ έχεις την ελευθερία μέσα σε αυτό το χάος να κάνεις το κέφι σου με τους όρους σου. Γιατί κανείς πραγματικά δεν νοιάζεται και μπορείς να γλιστρήσεις ανάμεσα από τους κανόνες και να κάνεις ό,τι θέλεις, όπως το θέλεις. Στην Αμερική όλα πια -και η τέχνη- είναι εμπόρευμα, και αυτό είναι βαρετό και νεκρό. Προτιμώ το εδώ. Η πιο πικρή αλήθεια που έχεις και σου έχουν πει; Ότι είμαι ανεπαρκής και άρα πρέπει να δουλεύω περισσότερο από τους άλλους. Εγώ μου το ‘πα. Κασσάνδρα: Σε συνάντησε ή τη συνάντησες; Έκανα το έργο αυτό για να με πείσει να ζω με χαρά και εγώ. Πώς την προσέγγισες σκηνοθετικά; Υπακούω σε έναν ρυθμό και μια μουσική που αναδύεται από το κείμενο και που μου υπαγορεύει ένα συγκεκριμένο σώμα, μια συγκεκριμένη φωνή, κίνηση, φως, ηχητικό περιβάλλον. Προσπαθώ να εξυπηρετήσω τη μεταδοτικότητα και αποτελεσματικότητα των λέξεων, παρηχήσεων, επαναλήψεων, παλιρροϊκών σχημάτων των φράσεων. Όλα υπαγορεύτηκαν από το κείμενο του Δημητριάδη. Ποια συναισθήματα σου δημιουργεί αυτή η πρώτη εμπειρία της σκηνοθεσίας και ποιες εικόνες και συναισθήματα σου δημιούργησε το Μπάγκειον ως χώρος όπου έλαβε χώρα η παράσταση; Λατρεύω την σύνθεση και την κωδικοποίηση και τη δημιουργία ενός ρυθμού που εξυπηρετεί τις λέξεις και τη δράση και την αποπλάνηση του θεατή. Δεν λατρεύω την πολυφωνία. Προτιμώ να τα κάνω όλα μόνος μου, ακόμα και λάθος. Δεν προσπαθώ να κάνω κάτι καλά, μόνο το κέφι μου κάνω και μόνο βάσει της δικής μου αντίληψης των πραγμάτων. Το Μπάγκειον είναι τρομερά φιλόξενο και οι άνθρωποί του το διαχειρίζονται χωρίς καμία παρεμβατικότητα και επιτροπιακή συμπεριφορά. Παίρνεις τα κλειδιά και δουλεύεις 18 ώρες τη μέρα ανενόχλητος. Περάσαμε πολύ όμορφα εδώ. Η Αθήνα σου αρέσει; Ναι, μου αρέσει. Είναι συχνά βάρβαρη και χωρίς οίκτο αλλά εδώ μπορώ να κάνω ό,τι θέλω και μόνο αυτό με νοιάζει. Ο θάνατος τι ρόλο παίζει στη ζωή σου; Δεν τον καταλαβαίνω. Στέκομαι μετέωρος, απαθής και βουβός όταν συμβαίνει. Ψυχανάλυση έχεις κάνει; Αποτυχημένα, ξανά και ξανά.

re you an optimist?

I’m optimistic about things getting progressively worse. It’s the right order, so they begin again, starting anew in a better way and more knowledgeable. Now it’s all wrong.

Do you feel happy and content?

I have no complaints.

What is your passion?

Designing or constructing fictitious worlds, to be honest. Playing a role in the theater or the cinema, where I can be myself. I only live there, really.

What do you think about Greece and Greek people in general?

Why did you come back to Greece from the US? In the US people do what they promise you and whatever they promise they really do, without much effort. If you work hard, with passion and commitment to the job, inevitably you will be rewarded. In Greece, on the other hand, people are always late and nothing ever goes as planned, except if there is excessive yelling and macho attitudes involved. Or you try to manipulate their emotions and make them take pride in helping you. Or if they are scared of you. The beauty of Greece, however, lies in the freedom the country offers you, despite this chaotic situation, to have your fun in your own way. Because nobody really cares and you can “glide” through the rules and do whatever you want, exactly the way you want it. In the USA everything -the arts included- is merchandise. And that is boring and dead. I prefer the way things are done here.

The most bitter truth you have ever shared or been told?

That I am inadequate and I need to work harder than everyone else. I told myself that.

Cassandra: who met whom? Did she come your way or did you come across hers?

I was involved in this play to persuade myself to live cheerfully.

What was your approach in terms of direction?

I obey a rhythm and some sort of music emerging from the artistic script that dictates a particular body, a specific voice, movement, light and audio setting. I try to serve a purpose, conveying words, alliterations, assonances, repetitive patterns and literary devices and figures of speech, into something effective. Everything emerged from Dimitriadis’ text.

How do you feel about your first attempt in directing and which images and feelings emerge from Bageion, where the play was performed?

I adore the synthesis and coding, both creating a rhythm that reinforces words and actions combined with seducing the audience. What I don’t like is polyphony. I prefer to do everything by myself, even with mistakes. I do not try to do something efficiently or well. I merely satisfy my need to have fun through my work, based on my own perception of things. Bageion is incredibly hospitable and its people manage the place with no sense of commissioning or intervention. If need be, you are given the keys and work however long it takes… Maybe even 18 hours per day, without anyone bothering you or complaining. We are very happy to be here.

Do you like Athens?

Yes, I do! It’s often cruel and ruthless, but I can do what pleases me and that is all I care about.

What part does death play in your life?

I don’t get it. I stand in limbo, apathetic and silent while it happens.

Have you tried psychoanalysis?
