Irving Penn Ένας από τους σπουδαιότερους φωτογράφους του 20 αιώνα, ένα ανήσυχο καλλιτεχνικά πνεύμα είναι ο Irving Penn. Ξεκίνησε ως ζωγράφος ενώ μαθήτευσε κοντά στον μεγάλο Alexey Brodovitch –art director του Harper’s Bazaar. Mε τη φωτογραφία ξεκίνησε να ασχολείται το 1943, δημιουργώντας ένα still life εξώφυλλο για την Αμερικάνικη Vogue του Οκτωβρίου. Τέσσερα χρόνια μετά γνωρίζει το μοντέλο και μετέπειτα σύζυγό και μούσα του, Lisa Fonssagrives όταν τη φωτογραφίζει για ένα editorial. Μαζί έχτισαν ένα μοναδικό portofolio με δημιουργίες από καταξιωμένους σχεδιαστές της εποχής εκείνης όπως Cristobal Balenciaga, Jacques Fath και Jean Desses. One of the most important photographers of the 20th century, a restless artistic spirit, Irving Penn started out as a painter and learnt his craft next to the great Alexey Brodovitch, art director for Harper’s Bazaar. He started out his relationship with photography in 1943, creating a still life cover for the October issue of American Vogue. Four years later, he meets model Lisa Fonssagrives, who would go on to become his wife and muse. Together, they built up an impressive portfolio, using creations from respected designers of the era, such as Cristobal Balenciaga, Jacques Fath and Jean Desses. His images, mostly in black and white, are notable for the wedge shaped grey backgrounds and strong sense of minimalism.
H φωτογραφία της μόδας, μετά τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, οφείλει την εξέλιξή της στην ιδιοφυΐα που ακούει στο όνομα Richard Avedon γνωστός και ως «o πατέρας της κίνησης». Κατατάχθηκε στο εμπορικό ναυτικό, όπου έβγαζε φωτογραφίες για ταυτότητες, μια εμπειρία που συνέβαλε στην αγάπη του για τη δημιουργία πορτραίτων. Το 1944, ξεκινά να εργάζεται στο Junior Section του περιοδικού Harper’s Bazaar, για να καταταγεί πέντε χρόνια μετά δίπλα στους Alexey Brodovitch, Carmel Snow και Diane Vreeland, την τότε «αφρόκρεμα» της μόδας. Πέρα από τις εικόνες μόδας, δημιούργησε μοναδικά, αυστηρώς ασπρόμαυρα πορτραίτα, ωδή στα έντονα συναισθήματα και τις αντιθέσεις. Ήταν ένας πρωτοπόρος στη φωτογραφία μόδας, ο οποίος μέχρι και τον θάνατό του το 2004, δε σταμάτησε ποτέ να επαναπροσδιορίζεται. Fashion photography, after the end of the Second World War, owes a lot of its evolution to the genius of Richard Avedon. He developed his love for portraits, after taking identification shots, while working in the Merchant Navy. In 1944, he starts up at the Junior Section of Harper’s Bazaar, before joining the ranks of fashion heavyweights such as Alexey Brodovitch, Carmel Snow and Diane Vreeland five years later. Beyond fashion imagery, he also created unique portraits, always in black and white, that pay tribute to strong feelings and contrasts. He was a fashion photography pioneer, a man constantly looking to re-define himself, until his death in 2004.

Γεννημένος στην Αγγλία της δεκαετία του 1970, ο Τim Walker ανέπτυξε την αγάπη του για τη φωτογραφία όταν -στα πλαίσια μιας εργασίας του- έκανε έρευνα για τον φωτογράφο Cecil Beaton. Σύντομα μετακόμισε στη Νέα Υόρκη, ύστερα από την αποφοίτηση του το 1994, για ένα μικρό χρονικό διάστημα όπου δούλεψε ως fulltime βοηθός του Richard Avedon, διαγράφοντας ύστερα τη δική του εμβληματική πορεία. His name is connected to the dreamlike, the eccentric, while his images never stop fascinating the viewer, through their extravagant nature and theatricality. Born in England in the 1970s, Tim Walker fell in love with photography, when researching photographer Cecil Beaton for an academic project. After graduating in 1994, he moved to New York, where he started his own grand career, after working briefly as a full time assistant for Richard Avedon.
