το καλοκαιρι ειναι ηδη εδω και φανταζομαι ολοι μας ετοιμαζομαστε για καποιο ελληνικο νησι η καποιο προορισμο στο εξωτερικο. με το δολαριο να εχει παρει τα κατω του ειναι πλεον ευκαιρια (οσο ειναι καιρος) για ενα υπερατλαντικο ταξιδι. to spot μας ειναι η πολη huntington beach στη νοτια καλιφορνια.
summer’s here and i imagine all of us are preparing for a holiday on a greek island or a destination abroad and with the dollar being at an all time low, now is the ideal time for trip across the atlantic. our destination is huntington beach in north california.
Αν κάνεις surf και έχεις γύρω στα 1000 ευρώ για το αεροπορικό σου εισιτήριο τότε ψάξε στο χάρτη τη Νότια Καλιφόρνια, κάπου ανάμεσα στο Λος Άντζελες και το Σαν Ντιέγκο. Εκεί βρίσκεται το περίφημο Huntington Beach Pier με την ατελείωτη παραλία του να κατακλύζεται από τις πρώτες πρωινές ώρες από surfers. Η πόλη έχει το κατάλληλο κλίμα και ιδανικά κύματα για αυτό το άθλημα, μάλιστα έχει ονομαστεί και επίσημα σαν Surf City USA! Άλλωστε δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι στην παραλία δεσπόζει ένα άγαλμα του Duke Kahanamoku, του Χαβανέζου πατέρα του μοντέρνου surf, και ότι επίσης εκεί διεξάγονται τα μεγαλύτερα surf contests παγκοσμίως! Το καλύτερο που έχεις να κάνεις είναι να νοικιάσεις ένα ποδήλατο και να αρχίσεις να ανακαλύπτεις την πόλη. Σχεδόν τα πάντα (μαγαζιά, εστιατόρια, bars) βρίσκονται στην Main Street, ένα μεγάλο δρόμο κάθετο στην παραλιακή Pacific Coast Highway. Εκτός από το ποδήλατο δοκίμασε φυσικά surf (υπάρχουν αρκετά μέρη για να νοικιάσεις φτηνό εξοπλισμό), skateboarding (πάρε longboard), ποδόσφαιρο και βόλεϊ στην άμμο. Μπορεί το βράδυ να πετύχεις και φωτιές στην παραλία όπως στις ταινίες… Για το βράδυ υπάρχουν αρκετά μπαράκια και εστιατόρια. Εμείς δηλώναμε καθημερινά παρόντες στο Sharkeez με πολύ νεολαία, ξανθές “silicon valley” Καλιφορνέζες, κοκτέιλ και αμερικάνικο ποδόσφαιρο στις οθόνες (Sharkeez, 211 Main St.). Για φαγητό αξίζει να επισκεφτείς το Duke’s Huntington Beach (317 Pacific Coast Highway) πάνω στην αποβάθρα με πολύ καλό μενού και Χαβανέζικο αέρα. Από εδώ έχεις την καλύτερη πανοραμική θέα της παραλίας. Επιστρέφοντας στην Main St. θα βρεις πραγματικά δεκάδες όμορφα μαγαζιά beach και street wear το ένα δίπλα στο άλλο (The Closet, HSS, Hurley, American Apparel, Roxy, Jack’s Surf Shop) κάτι που δικαιολογεί το γιατί πολλές εταιρίες (Billabong, Quiksilver, O’Neill) έχουν έδρα το Huntington ή την γενικότερη περιφέρεια της Orange County. Αν θέλεις να ζήσεις έστω για λίγες μέρες σαν πρωταγωνιστής της σειράς The OC, το Huntington Beach είναι ο μόνος δρόμος!
If you’re into surfing and have 100 Euros to your name then look on a map for a place
called Huntington Beach somewhere between LA and San Diego. That’s where Hunt-
ington Beach Pier is located, a long beach taken over by surfers from the early hours of
every morning. The town is ideal in terms of weather and waves and thus has been rightfully named Surf City USA! It’s not by chance that there is a statue on site of Duke Ka-
hanamoku, the father of modern surfing, or that this is the beach on which the most important surf contests in the world take place!
The best way to explore the town is by renting a bicycle and riding around; most shops,
bars and restaurants are situated on Main Street, a long road cutting through the Pacif-
ic Coast Highway. Biking aside, surfing is a must (there are a lot of shops around renting out all the equipment at affordable prices), skateboarding (try longboard), beach football and volleyball. You might even be lucky enough to catch the big bonfires on the beach in the evenings, just like in the movies.
For your nights out there are more than enough bars and restaurants to cater for all
tastes. We chose to hang out in Sharkeez, a place full of young people and silicon en-
hanced Californian blondes, cocktails and American football on large screens (Sharkeez,
211 Main St.). For dinner Duke’s Huntington Beach (317 Pacific Coast Highway) is certainly worth a visit, situated on the doc serving good food with a distinct Hawaiian feel. This spot also offers a panoramic view of the beach.
Back on Main Street you will discover tens of shops selling beach and street wear (The
Closet, HSS, Hurley, American Apparel, Roxy, and Jack’s Surf Shop). This is the reason
brands such as Billabong, Quiksilver and O’Neill are based in Huntington and the wider Orange County area. If you want to feel what it is to star in The OC then Huntington Beach has to be the place for you.
