E D I T O R I A L Ανοίγω τα μάτια μου κάθε πρωί στις 5, χωρίς ξυπνητήρι. Έτσι απροειδοποίητα, διακόπτεται ο ύπνος μου και κοιτάω το ταβάνι. Οι πρώτες σκέψεις είναι θολές, κοιμισμένες και τυλιγμένες στο σκοτάδι. Λίγα λεπτά αργότερα σκέφτομαι συνειδητά, αισθάνομαι τους φόβους μου. Είναι πέντε η ώρα, κάθε ξημέρωμα που αναμετριέμαι με τη διάθεσή μου και μερικές φορές και με την ίδια μου την ύπαρξη. Και όσο και να πιέσω τον εαυτό μου να γυρίσω πλευρό και να αφεθώ στον ύπνο, τελικά το μόνο που σκέφτομαι είναι η απώλεια μέσα μου και δίπλα μου. Μέσα μου γιατί μου λείπεις, δίπλα μου γιατί δεν υπάρχεις στο κρεβάτι να σε αγκαλιάσω. Σήμερα στις πέντε, δεν άντεξα και σηκώθηκα. Εφτιαξα ένα ζεστό φιλοδοξώντας πως θα το πιω και θα νυστάξω ξανά. Έκανα μια βόλτα στο σαλόνι, κοίταξα τα φυτά στο μπαλκόνι. Τσέκαρα στο κινητό αν υπήρχε κάποια πράσινη βούλα, κάποιο ξενυχτισμένο μήνυμα. Τίποτα. Μια βαριά αίσθηση κενού και η ψύχρα του ουρανού που σε λίγο θα χάραζε. Και κάπως έτσι μου καρφώθηκε στο μυαλό ότι η αγάπη δε χάνεται αλλά σκορπίζεται σε έναν τέτοιον ουρανό πριν την αυγή. Και η σκέψη αυτή με πόνεσε αλλά μετά ο πόνος γλύκανε. Ισως επειδή με παρηγόρησε η ιδέα ότι ακόμα και αν μόνο η αγάπη μένει μετά από τόσα λόγια, τουλάχιστον αυτή δεν εξαφανίζεται. Κάπου υπάρχει και κάπως επιστρέφει. Σαν την πρωινή δροσιά.

ερικές φορές, τα πράγματα είναι απλά. Όταν συναντάμε καινούριους ανθρώπους, όταν συζητάμε μαζί τους, όταν προσπαθούμε να τους γνωρίσουμε, όταν μας ανοίγονται και μας εκφράζουν τις σκέψεις τους, όταν με αμοιβαία εμπιστοσύνη αποκαλύπτεται ο ένας στον άλλο, ένα πράγμα μπορεί να εξηγήσει απλοποιώντας μεγαλοφυώς τις καταστάσεις - αυτήν την εγγύτητα που κάνει μια γνωριμία να αξίζει: It's only love. Για να είμαστε πιο ακριβείς, επιβεβαιώνεται ότι τα πράγματα είναι απλά ξανά και ξανά, κάθε φορά που ακούγεται το τραγούδι αυτού του τεύχους, το «It's only love» - και ακούγεται εδώ και πάνω από 40 χρόνια, από τότε που πρωτοκυκλοφόρησε με τη φωνή του Barry White και με τίτλο «It's only love doing its thing», το 1978, σε μουσική και στίχους των Jimmy και Bella Cameron. Tο συμπεριέλαβαν στο album τους «Α New Flame», που βγήκε τον αμέσως επόμενο μήνα, για να γίνει εφτά φορές πλατινένιο στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία. Ήταν το πρώτο άλμπουμ τους που υιοθετούσε αυτόν τον ήχο που τους έκανε διάσημους, έναν ήχο εμφανώς πιο κοντά στα '90s απ' ό,τι στα '80s, τα οποία εξάλλου ο lead singer τους, Mick Hucknall, λέγεται ότι δεν συμπαθούσε ιδιαίτερα. Ο Mick Hucknall, λοιπόν, εξελισσόταν τότε ήδη σε σούπερσταρ, τραβώντας την προσοχή με παπαρατσικά ενσταντανέ από τις σχέσεις του με τα supermodels της εποχής και με την αγάπη του για τη Manchester United. Ωστόσο, τίποτα από όλα αυτά δεν έχει σημασία. Σημασία έχει ότι αυτό το τραγούδι - που σάμπλαρε ακόμα και ο 50 Cent το 2008, στο κομμάτι του «21 Questions» - κυκλοφόρησε με όλο τον ακομπλεξάριστο ρομαντισμό του και έγινε τεράστια επιτυχία σε μια εποχή που όλα φαίνονταν έτοιμα να καταρρεύσουν. ometimes, things are really simple.

When we meet new people, when we talk to them, when we try to get to know them, when they open up and express their thoughts to us, when we reveal ourselves to each other through mutual trust, only one thing can explain - ingeniously simplifying each circumstance - this intimacy that makes an acquaintance worthy: it's only love.

To be more precise, it's been being verified that things are simple, over and over again, every time we hear the song οf this issue, “It's only love” – and we have been listening to it for more than 40 years, since it has first come out, with Barry White's voice and titled “It's only love doing its thing”, in 1978, with music and lyrics by Jimmy and Bella Cameron. It's only love, then.

And although the way this soul legend sang it - as if describing a seduction scene - emphasized on sensuality, similar to all of his performances, anyway, it was the 1989's approach and performance of Simply Red, who re-sang it under the shorter title “It's only love”, that glorified this piece, establishing it in our consciousness as one of the iconic romantic songs of the decade that was yet to start.

Simply Red released it as a single at a time when they were already reaching the zenith of their fame, in January 1989. They included it in their album “A New Flame”, which came out on the next month, only to become seven times platinum in the UK. It was their first album to have adopted the sound that has made them famous, a sound obviously closer to the '90s than the '80s - which their lead singer, Mick Hucknall, was not particularly fond of, as word has it. Mick Hucknall was already becoming a superstar, drawing attention with its paparatsi snapshots of his relationships with supermodels and his love for Manchester United.

Nevertheless, nothing of all that really matters. What matters is that this song - which even 50 Cent has sampled in his “21 Questions” song - came out with all the unapologetic romanticism of the world and became a hit at a time when everything looked ready to just fall apart.

Maybe because then, just like now, there was a need for a simple, eloquent answer to what is it that really must happen, when people meet: Ιt's only love.

CELEBRATING T HE CITY'S SPIRIT Οι μεγάλες αγάπες δεν κρύβονται! Γιορτάζονται! Και το περιοδικό OZON, ως αυθεντικός urban lover, γιόρτασε την αγάπη του για την πόλη με όλους τους λάτρεις της αστικής κουλτούρας, σε ένα μεγάλο street event που τα είχε όλα!

Η

προσέλευση ήταν εντυπωσιακή. Πάνω από 2000 urban lovers συγκεντρώθηκαν την Πέμπτη, 20 Ιουνίου, στον πολυχώρο πολιτισμού ΑΘΗΝΑΪΣ, που γέμισε από τις έξι το απόγευμα με το πιο δημιουργικό κοινό της πόλης. Όσοι βρέθηκαν εκεί, είχαν την ευκαιρία να ζήσουν ένα ξεχωριστό πάρτι και να γνωρίσουν τους cool εκπροσώπους της αθηναϊκής κουλτούρας. Το παρών έδωσαν οκτώ από τα πιο γνωστά ονόματα του αθηναϊκού street art, που μάλιστα έφτασαν στο πάρτι φέρνοντας μαζί την έμπνευσή τους: στον πολυχώρο είχαν στηθεί για αυτούς τρία ξύλινα τρίπτυχα, σαν τεράστια, όρθια, ανοιχτά βιβλία και εκεί ξεδίπλωσαν το ταλέντο τους live, δημιουργώντας original έργα! Σε κάθε τρίπτυχο έβαφαν τρεις artists, o καθένας με τη δική του ιδιαίτερη αισθητική. Το κοινό τους γνώρισε και συζήτησε μαζί τους, και παρακολούθησε τα installations να γεμίζουν με τα αισιόδοξα παστέλ χρώματα του Yiakou, την ποιητική έμπνευση του Spent1, τη «μητέρα φύση» του SimpleG, τα χρώματα ζούγκλας της Μ.

Koan, τα glittery cartoons της Nique, τα fluo comics των 3ΜΚ, τη ρετρό χρωματιστή γεωμετρία του Bran, τον πολύχρωμο, πολύπλοκο κόσμο του Soteur. Παράλληλα, οι urban lovers που βρέθηκαν στο event περιπλανήθηκαν στη συλλογική έκθεση φωτογραφίας, με τίτλο, φυσικά, «Urban», που περιλάμβανε τα urban loving έργα δεκαεννιά καλλιτεχνών, οι οποίοι ανταποκρίθηκαν στο ανοιχτό κάλεσμα του OZON. Φυσικά και ο street artist Gospel ήταν εκεί, για να δημιουργήσει ένα ξεχωριστό έργο μαζί με όσους συμμετείχαν στο graffiti workshop του. Πάρτι χωρίς μουσική και ποτό δε γίνεται, βέβαια! O Kissing Strangers με το DJ set του έδινε ρυθμό στη βραδιά, ενώ το κοινό από νωρίς απολάμβανε τα ροφήματα της σειράς Starbucks RTD, το Almond Plant – Based, φυτικό ρόφημα αμυγδάλου με καφέ Starbucks και το Starbucks Frappuccino Matcha Tea, με τα ντελικάτα αρώματα ιαπωνικού πράσινου τσαγιού matcha. Το πάρτι συνεχίστηκε με δροσερή μπύρα Heineken 0.0 που, καθώς δεν περιέχει καθόλου αλκοόλ, έπιναν άφοβα όλοι. Εντυπωσιακή παρουσία στο event είχε και η New Era, με τα urban cool καπέλα της! Το brand συμμετείχε με ένα artwork του Same84, αφιερωμένο στην καμπάνια της «We Reign as One», μια έκθεση φωτογραφίας της Nina Lass και video art από τον Απόστολο Ζυγούρη.

Urban lovers αποδείχτηκε ότι είναι και οι ήρωες της αγαπημένης mind-bending σειράς LEGION! Τους έφερε στο πάρτι το κανάλι FOX, το οποίο διαμόρφωσε ειδικά ένα θεματικό living room με όλες τις πληροφορίες για τη σειρά και με street super hero artworks. Μέχρι το επόμενο urban party, keep loving your city! Στην ομαδική έκθεση φωτογραφίας συμμετείχαν οι Δημήτρης Δημητρίου, Φίλιππος Ηλιόπουλος, Ιάσωνας Αλβέρτος Δέγλερης, Κωνσταντίνος Μαγκαλιός, Θάνος Ψαρός, Κατερίνα Ριτσώνη, MisterEight, Μαρία Σταμάτη, Βασίλης Μαυροειδής, Μαρία Ξανθοπούλου, Γιάννης Βουτιράκης, Δημήτρης Αγκαβανάκης, Ανδρέας Αγιαννιτόπουλος, Δημήτρης Πετρόπουλος, Κωνσταντίνος Στιβακτής, ody.the.explorer, Νάνσυ Ρασσιά, Κωνσταντίνος Σταμάτης και Κωνσταντίνος Παπανικολάου.

You can't hide big love! You can only celebrate it! And OZON magazine, like an original urban lover, celebrated its love for the city, along with every urban culture afficionado, in a big event that had it all!

T

he attendance was impressive. More than 2000 urban lovers showed up on Thursday, the 20th of June, at Athinais Cultural Centre, which was packed with the most creative crowd of the city, already from six in the afternoon. Everybody had the opportunity to experience a unique party and meet the coolest representatives of the Athenian culture.

Eight of the most renowned names of the Athenian street art scene were there and they had come bringing along their inspiration: three wooden, three-fold installations, resembling huge, standing, open books, were waiting for them in the venue; the artists unfolded live their talent on them, creating original works! Three artists, each one with their own, distinctive aesthetics, were painting on each installation.

The audience got to know them and discussed with them, while watching the installations getting filled with Yiakou's optimistic pastel hues, Spent1's poetic inspiration, Simple G's “mother nature”, M.Koan's jungle colours, Nique's glittery cartoons, 3MK's fluo comics, Bran's retro colourful geometry, Soteur's complex world.

In addition, the urban lovers that attended the event wandered around in the collective photography exhibition named, naturally, “Urban”, which presented works by nineteen artists, who had responded to OZON's open call. Of course, the street artist Gospel was also present, creating a unique work with the guests that participated in his graffiti workshop.

Naturally, you cannot have a party without music and drinks! DJ Kissing Strangers set the night's rhythm, while the audience was enjoying beverages from the Starbucks RTD collection: the Almond Plant-Based beverage with Starbucks coffee and the Starbucks Frappuccino Matcha Tea, with delicate Japanese green matcha tea aromas. The party went on with chilled Heineken 0.0 beer, on which everybody sipped with no regrets, since it contains no alcohol at all.

New Era, with its urban cool caps, also made an impression! The brand joined the event with an artwork by Same84, dedicated to the “We Reign as One” campaign, with a photography exhibition by Nina Lass and with video art by Apostolos Zigouris.

t the Urban Lovers party, FOX brought the urban super heroes of Athens closer to the Marvel universe! The series LEGION, which aired exclusively on FOX channel in Greece, welcomed the guests of Urban Lovers in an impressive corner with super hero artworks, where the fans could find collectibles, take pictures and watch teasers of the show. LEGION, based on the eponymous comic by Marvel, presents the adventures of David Haller, who discovers that he is the world's most powerful mutant. Created by Noah Hawley, with impressive special effects and full of cliff-hangers, the show has an enthousiastic audience all over the world. Available on FOX+.

The historic, beloved American brand participated in the Urban Lovers event with its campaign for the statement MLB caps “We Reign as One” and with the refreshed figure of 9FORTY! The campaign was presented through three projects, signed by three artists, who were inspired by the collection's three hats, with the logos of New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox. The guests had the opportunity to see the dedicated artwork of the graffiti artist Same84, a mini photography exhibition by photographer Nina Lass and a video by videographer Apostolos Zigouris. ε σταθερή παρουσία εδώ και οχτώ χρόνια, το καθιερωμένο πια Fashion Room Service έχει εξελιχθεί στο πιο cool fashion πάρτι της Θεσσαλονίκης, φέρνοντας σε επαφή ανερχόμενους σχεδιαστές και διεθνή labels και παρουσιάζοντάς τους στα δωμάτια του ξενοδοχείου, που μεταμορφώνονται σε showrooms και ανοίγουν για να υποδεχθούν το ενημερωμένο art και fashion crowd της πόλης. Έτσι, περισσότεροι από δύο χιλιάδες Θεσσαλονικείς βρέθηκαν την Τετάρτη, 23 Οκτωβρίου, στο ιστορικό, διατηρητέο κτίριο που φιλοξενεί το Colors Urban Hotel, για να γνωρίσουν τα πιο φρέσκα ονόματα της μόδας. Οι πόρτες άνοιξαν στις πέντε το απόγευμα, αλλά, φυσικά, όλοι έμειναν για το μεγάλο πάρτι που ακολούθησε, στο Garden Bar του ξενοδοχείου. Μουσική από τους παραγωγούς του OFFRADIO και ροζ gin & tonic, φτιαγμένο με το αγαπημένο gin Beefeater PINK με εκχύλισμα φράουλας, έδιναν τον ρυθμό και απογείωσαν το πάρτι, που κράτησε μέχρι τα μεσάνυχτα!

The popular, awarded Fashion Room Service event, organized by OZON magazine, went back to Thessaloniki for its fall edition, with another fashionable party at the Colors Urban Hotel, in the center of the city.

W

ith a steady presence through the last eight years, the established Fashion Room Service event has evolved into the coolest fashion party in Thessaloniki, bringing together up-and-coming designers and international labels, and presenting them in the hotel's rooms, which get transformed into showrooms and open to welcome the updated art and fashion crowd of the city.

So, more than two thousand Thessalonians came on Wednesday, October 23rd, to the historic, protected building that hosts the Colors Urban Hotel, to get acquainted with the fashion's fresh names.

The visitors had the opportunity to wander the rooms on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floor of the hotel, each one of which carried the style and character of a seperate brand! Greek and international labels and new designers got in touch with fashion editors, influencers, buyers and, of course, with the fashion lovers of the city!

The guests learned everything about make-up art by the LMI London Make-up Institute; then, they saw the new collections of Champion and Saucony Originals, they wore Leio Ross and Funk Da Queen jewellery and they took pictures at the Photography Studio Iosifina. In addition, they visited the hang over room by Vans, they got acquainted with Huawei's technology, as well as with the street culture of Hackney Clothing and Ghetto Blaster. Finally, they met with the creations of No Thanks Collection and Bettina Stores x Εφήμερον, and they checked out the jewellery by designer Ioanna.M. The doors opened at five in the afternoon, but, naturally, everybody stayed for the big party that followed, at the Garden Bar of the hotel. Music by the OFFRADIO's Djs and pink gin & tonic, made with the popular gin Beefeater PINK with strawberry extract, brought rhythm and rocked the party, which lasted until midnight!

Our next dates are fixed for the Fashion Room Service Christmas Glam Edition at the Hilton Hotel Athens, on the 19th of December, and at the Colors Urban Hotel in Thessaloniki, on the 13th of May 2020.

GREEK DESIG N TRANSFORMER Ο νέος Έλληνας designer μεταμόρφωσε τα σκουπίδια της Αθήνας σε μοναδικά αντικείμενα design, δημιουργώντας τη σειρά «Trashformers», την οποία, μάλιστα, μόλις παρουσίασε στο project «Ampersand», της γκαλερίστριας των Rodeo, Σύλβιας Κούβαλη, αλλά και στο Designblok 19, το διεθνές design festival της Πράγας. Ζητήσαμε να μάθουμε τι τον ενέπνευσε και γιατί δημιούργησε το studio του στην Αθήνα.

Π

οιες ήταν οι πηγές έμπνευσής σου για τη σειρά «Trashformers» και πώς έφτασες στο τελικό αποτέλεσμα; Το φελιζόλ ήξερα να το δουλεύω πολύ καλά ήδη. Όταν μπήκα στο σπίτι μου στην Αθήνα, κράτησα τα κομμάτια φελιζόλ της συσκευασίας του ψυγείου για πάνω από ένα χρόνο. Ήξερα πως θα έρθει το κατάλληλο ερέθισμα να ξαναπιάσω αυτό το υλικό. Από εκείνη τη στιγμή άρχισα να το παρατηρώ πολύ έντονα, στους κάδους σκουπιδιών μέσα στην πόλη. Παράλληλα, διαπίστωσα και το πρόβλημα των σκουπιδιών στη χώρα μας. Ξεκίνησα λοιπόν να σκέφτομαι πώς μπορώ να δώσω σε αυτά τα πεταμένα κομμάτια μια δεύτερη ευκαιρία. Έτσι γεννήθηκε η ιδέα του Trashformers (trash=σκουπίδι), με στοιχεία από τα παιχνίδια Transformers. Όταν συνέλεξα έναν μεγάλο αριθμό τέτοιων κομματιών, άρχισα να δημιουργώ διάφορες συνθέσεις, σαν παιχνίδια Lego. Τέλος, πειραματίστηκα αρκετά για να κάνω κάτι τόσο εύθραυστο, αντικείμενο μεγάλης αντοχής, ώστε να μπορεί να χρησιμοποιείται. Η διαδικασία ήταν να το επικαλύψω με fiberglass, ρητίνη με βάση το νερό και χρώμα. Τι είδαν όσοι βρέθηκαν στην παρουσίαση των «Trashformers», στο Ampersand; H Σύλβια Κούβαλη δημιούργησε την πλατφόρμα Ampersand (&), με σκοπό να συστήσει στο κοινό νέους καλλιτέχνες. Το πρώτο edition αφορούσε το σύγχρονο design και μου έκανε την τιμή να παρουσιάσουμε τη σειρά «Trashformers». Η συλλογή αποτελείται από 11 κομμάτια και περιλαμβάνει πολυθρόνες, έναν καθρέφτη, μια τραπεζαρία, ένα coffee table και άλλα. Έκανες μεταπτυχιακό στην Écal, στην Ελβετία, και δούλεψες στο Atelier Van Lieshout. Πώς πήρες την απόφαση να εγκατασταθείς στην Αθήνα; Έψαχνα ένα μέρος όπου θα ήταν ευχάριστο να ζω αλλά συγχρόνως θα μπορούσα να δουλεύω τα πρότζεκτ μου. Ήταν η περίοδος μετά την Documenta και η Αθήνα είχε ένα δυνατό vibe. Επιπλέον, τότε δεν υπήρχε σχεδόν κανένα δείγμα σύγχρονου design. Θεώρησα λοιπόν πως ήταν ένα κενό πεδίο, το οποίο θα μπορούσα να εξερευνήσω. Ποιες από τις έως τώρα συνεργασίες σου θα ξεχώριζες; Είχα την ευκαιρία, χάρη στην Écal, να βρεθώ μέσα σε μεγάλες εταιρείες και να προκύψουν και συνεργασίες. Κάποιες που ξεχωρίζω είναι με τη Chopard και με την Retrosuperfuture. Εάν σου δινόταν η ευκαιρία μέσα από την τέχνη σου να αλλάξεις κάτι στον κόσμο, τι θα ήταν αυτό; Να βλέπει ο κόσμος τα πράγματα με περισσότερο χιούμορ. Θεωρώ ότι η δουλειά μου ενέχει αυτό το στοιχείο. Και αν μπορείς μέσα από το χιούμορ να περάσεις και κάποια μηνύματα, ακόμα καλύτερα.

The new Greek designer has transformed the garbage of Athens into unique design objects, creating the “Trashformers” collection, which was recently on display in “Ampersand” - the new project of Rodeo Gallery's Sylvia Kouvali - and also in Designblok 19, the international design festival of Prague. We asked him what inspired him and why he chose Athens to establish his studio.

W

hat gave you inspiration for your “Trashformers” collection and what was your procedure to get your final results?

I already knew how to work with styrofoam. When I moved into my house in Athens, I kept the pieces of styrofoam from my refrigerator's packaging for over a year. I knew the right stimulus for getting my hands on this material would come. From that moment on, I also started to notice it a lot all over the city.

In addition, I realized the problem of waste in our country. I therefore started wondering how I could give a second chance to those dumped pieces. And thus, the idea of Trashformers was born, with elements borrowed from the children's toy Transformers. When I had gathered a great number of such pieces, I started creating various compositions, like complicated Lego toys. Finally, I had to experiment a lot, to make a durable, usable object, out of such a sensitive material. The process was to cover it with fiberglass, water based resin and colour.

What did the visitors see in Ampersand, at the exhibition of “Trashformers”?

Sylvia Kouvali has created a platform called Ampersand (&), aiming at introducing to the audience new artists from various creative fields. Its first edition was about contemporary design and she made me the honour of showing my “Trashformers” series there. The collection consists of eleven objects, including chairs and armchairs, a mirror, a dining table and a coffee table.

You got your Master of Advanced Studies from Écal in Switzerland and you have worked in Atelier Van Lieshout.

Why did you take the decision to locate in Athens?

I was looking for a place that would be pleasant for me to live in, but also where I could work on my projects. It was that period right after Documenta, and Athens had a very strong vibe. Besides, there were almost no signs of contemporary design activity at the time. So I thought this was a vacant field that I could explore.

Which of your collaborations would you say that stand out?

Thanks to Écal, I had the opportunity to become acquainted with major companies – resulting in some collaborations. I would choose the one with Chopard and with the Retrosuperfuture.

What would you change in the world, if you had the chance to do it through your art?

I would like for the people to see things with a little bit of humour.

I believe my work is characterized by this element. And if you can also communicate some messages through it – well, that's even better.

ARTEMIS BA LTOYANNI THE ART OF DISR UPTING

Η Άρτεμις Μπαλτογιάννη φέρνει στον Πειραιά την εμπειρία της στην επιμέλεια εκθέσεων και το art consulting, εγκαινιάζοντας έναν εκθεσιακό χώρο που θα φιλοξενεί διεθνείς εκθέσεις σημαντικών εκπροσώπων της σύγχρονης τέχνης, σε συνεργασία με τις ίδιες τις γκαλερί των καλλιτεχνών. Δεδομένου του ότι ο χώρος της τέχνης δεν έχει μείνει αλώβητος από την παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση των τελευταίων ετών, η οποία ανάγκασε πολλές γκαλερί να αναστείλουν τη λειτουργία τους, η πρωτοβουλία αυτή προκύπτει ως απαραίτητη και συστήνει μία νέα, πιο ευέλικτη προσέγγιση στο curating. Η αναγνωρισμένη σύμβουλος τέχνης εξηγεί πώς το The Intermission έρχεται να προτείνει ένα εναλλακτικό μοντέλο οργάνωσης, επιμέλειας και παρουσίασης των εκθέσεων, που εξελίσσει τον παραδοσιακό τρόπο λειτουργίας των γκαλερί, προς όφελος τόσο των καλλιτεχνών όσο και του κοινού.

Artemis Baltoyanni is bringing to Piraeus her expertise in curating and art consulting, by establishing an exhibition space that will be hosting international exhibitions by important contemporary artists, in collaboration with the galleries that represent them.

Considering that the world of art has not been spared the international recession of the last decade, which forced many galleries to suspend their operations, this initiative emerges as an essential one and introduces a new, more flexible curatorial approach. The renowned art consultant explains the ways in which The Intermission is suggesting an alternative model in organizing, curating and presenting an exhibition, thus evolving the traditional way that an art gallery works, for the benefit of both the artists and the audience.

ώς αποφάσισες να γυρίσεις μόνιμα πλέον στην Ελλάδα και πώς γεννήθηκε η ιδέα τού The Intermission; Δεν έχω γυρίσει μόνιμα στην Ελλάδα, πηγαινοέρχομαι ακόμα στο Λος Άντζελες. Ως σύμβουλος τέχνης, μοιράζω τον χρόνο μου και ταξιδεύω πολύ λόγω δουλειάς. Στο Λος Άντζελες μου αρέσει τρομερά η ζωή και έχει αξιόλογους καλλιτέχνες. Στην Ελλάδα περνάω περισσότερο χρόνο τα τελευταία δυο χρόνια. Έτσι γεννήθηκε και η ιδέα του The Intermission, αφού άρχισα να περνάω αρκετό χρόνο στην Αθήνα. Οι πρώτες μου σκέψεις ήταν ότι θα έπρεπε να ανοίξω κάπου ένα γραφείο, να υπάρχει μία βάση. Δεν το έκανα αμέσως, το άφησα λίγο να ωριμάσει και ξαφνικά μου ήρθε η ιδέα για το The Intermission, αρκετά απότομα και ολοκληρωμένα, πάνω σε μια συζήτηση τον περασμένο Δεκέμβριο, ενώ βρισκόμουν στο Λος Άντζελες. Πώς θα περιέγραφες το The Intermission; Είναι ένα μοντέλο που μου επιτρέπει να μπορώ να κάνω πιο σταθερά κάποιες εκθέσεις - πάντοτε μου άρεσε η διοργάνωση εκθέσεων, η συνεργασία με τους καλλιτέχνες, το δημιουργικό κομμάτι της επιμέλειας, η δυνατότητα να εμβαθύνω εγώ στη δική μου μόρφωση. Ο κεντρικός άξονας είναι η υπενοικίαση του χώρου σε άλλους φορείς τέχνης, τους οποίους έχω προσκαλέσει να δουλέψουμε μαζί. Η αρμοδιότητά μου είναι αυτή του καλλιτεχνικού διευθυντή. Προσκαλώ την εκάστοτε γκαλερί με μια συγκεκριμένη πρόταση ως προς το ποιον καλλιτέχνη θα ήθελα να παρουσιάσω στο ελληνικό κοινό, προσδιορίζω το χρονικό πλαίσιο, τους βοηθάω στην παραγωγή, καθώς είμαι στην Ελλάδα και προσπαθώ να συσπειρώσω το κοινό. Ασφαλώς συμμετέχω και ως επιμελήτρια στη συζήτηση, αλλά θέλω να τους δίνω carte blanche, εξαρτάται από τον καλλιτέχνη πόσο θέλει να με συμπεριλάβει. ow and when did you decide to relocate to Greece permanently and how was the idea of The Intermission born?

I did not move back to Greece permanently, I am still going back and forth to Los Angeles. I try to split my time and I also travel a lot due to my work as an art consultant. I enjoy living in Los Angeles a lot, and there are exceptional artists there as well. Only in the last 2 years have I been spending more time in Greece, and the idea of The Intermission came up quite suddenly, during a conversation I was having last December, while in Los Angeles.

How would you describe The Intermission?

It is a model that allows me to do more exhibitions consistently I have always enjoyed organizing exhibitions, collaborating with artists, curating and being able to deepen my own education.

The centerpiece of The Intermission is to rent the space to other cultural organizations that I will be inviting to work with. My responsibility is that of the art director, I invite a gallery with a specific suggestion regarding which artist I would like to present to the Greek public, I determine the time frame, I assist them with production, since I am in Greece, and I try to gather an audience.

Of course, I also participate in the discussion about the curatorial approach but I want to give them a carte blanche. It depends on the artist - if and to which extend they want to include me in this procedure.

ιστεύω ότι αυτό μπορεί να επιτευχθεί πιο εποικοδομητικά με ατομικές εκθέσεις, ώστε το πρόγραμμα να έχει μια συνέπεια. Η σκέψη είναι περίπου για 4 εκθέσεις τον χρόνο. Μου αρέσει η ιδέα να φέρνουμε διαφορετικό κόσμο στον χώρο, κόσμο που δε θα ερχόταν υπό άλλες συνθήκες. Ελπίζω να βγούμε πέρα από το αυστηρό κοινό της σύγχρονης τέχνης και να μεγαλώσει το υπάρχον κοινό - αν μπορούμε να το μεγαλώσουμε έστω και λίγο. Θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε πως το The Intermission είναι η εναλλακτική μορφή μιας γκαλερί; Η ιδέα δεν ήταν ποτέ να ανοίξω μια γκαλερί. Για πολλούς λόγους. Ο βασικός λόγος είναι ότι κάνω αρκετά χρόνια τη δουλειά του συμβούλου τέχνης. Δουλειά την οποία μετά από πολλά χρόνια έχω αποδεχτεί, θα ήταν μια άλλη κατεύθυνση το άνοιγμα μιας γκαλερί. Είναι μια δουλειά που απαιτεί παρά πολύ μεγάλη αφοσίωση. Το The Intermission σίγουρα είναι μια εναλλακτική μορφή. Στην ουσία είναι ένα μοντέλο, στο οποίο μοιράζεσαι τα resources, επιτρέποντας να φεύγεις από τη βάση σου, να ανοιχτείς σε καινούριες αγορές. Είναι ένα μοντέλο συνεργασίας που βασίζεται πάνω σε σχέσεις εμπιστοσύνης. Το μοντέλο της δικιάς μας γενιάς είναι το μοντέλο της συνεργασίας, είναι περιορισμένο το πού μπορείς να φτάσεις χωρίς συνεργασίες. Σε αυτό βασίζεται το μοντέλο του The Intermission. Πώς και αποφάσισες να στεγάσεις το The Intermission στον Πειραιά; Δεν κοίταξα κανένα άλλο μέρος, δε σκέφτηκα κανένα άλλο όνομα. Πρώτη φορά στη ζωή μου. Ο Πειραιάς διαθέτει έναν πολυπολιτισμικό χαρακτήρα και ο δρόμος μας σου δίνει την αίσθηση μιας γειτονιάς, είναι μια όμορφη γειτονιά. Τα εγκαίνια του The Intermission πραγματοποιήθηκαν στις 18 Σεπτεμβρίου, με την έκθεση του Αμερικανού εικαστικού John Knight, Headshots, a work in situ.

I

hope that The Intermission will work as an educational tool at some point, by building an archive and giving access to information that the public would not be able to get otherwise.

I believe that this can be done more constructively with solo representations/exhibitions. Thus, the program would have a consistency. I was thinking about having 4 exhibitions a year.

Would it be correct to assume that The Intermission is an alternative form of a gallery?

The Intermission is definitely an alternative. It is essentially a model where you share resources, which allows you to leave your base, to open up to new markets. It is a partnership model based on trusting relationships. The model of our generation is the model of collaboration, what you can achieve without collaborating is limited. This is the base of the model of The Intermission.

How did you decide to locate The Intermission in Piraeus?

I did not visit any other place, I did not think of any other name.

For the first time in my life. Piraeus has a multicultural character and our street gives you the feeling of a neighborhood, it is a beautiful neighborhood.

Η συζήτηση με τη Μυρτώ και τη Σύλβια εξηγεί την επιτυχία των έργων και των events τους: πρόκειται για μια ιστορία αγάπης για τη φωτογραφία και πάθους για το εναλλακτικό έντυπο.

ίναι εντυπωσιακός ο ενθουσιασμός τους όταν μιλούν για τα έργα που έχουν στα σκαριά - αυτό το δημιουργικό high που νιώθεις ότι ανυπομονούν να διοχετεύσουν σε 8 διαφορετικά είδη χαρτιού και να τυπώσουν με 5 διαφορετικούς τρόπους, όπως έκαναν με το βιβλίο «Meat» του Olivier Pin-Fat. Και αυτό επειδή, όπως λέει η Μυρτώ, «ψάχναμε να βρούμε έναν τρόπο να καλύψουμε τις δικές μας ανάγκες, να βρούμε έναν χώρο ο οποίος δε θα απαιτεί πολλά έξοδα να βρούμε εναλλακτικούς τρόπους παρουσίασης, όπως είναι τα zines». Εννιά zines νέων Ελλήνων φωτογράφων, λοιπόν, παρουσίασαν, με επιτυχία, στα εγκαίνια του στούντιό τους, του Void, «και μας άρεσε η διαδικασία της δημιουργίας τους, οπότε αποφασίσαμε να το συνεχίσουμε». Αυτό που κάνει τους Void να ξεχωρίζει είναι ότι βλέπουν κάθε έκδοση ως καινούριο αντικείμενο τέχνης. «Θεωρούμε ότι και εμείς συμμετέχουμε. Δημιουργείται μαζί με τον καλλιτέχνη ως ξεχωριστό έργο. Η διαδικασία είναι διαφορετική, ανάλογα με τις ανάγκες του κάθε project», εξηγεί η Μυρτώ. «Mπορεί ένας καλλιτέχνης να μας δώσει τις εικόνες του και να μας πει ότι έχουμε το ελεύθερο να κάνουμε οτιδήποτε θέλουμε, ή κάποιος να έχει πιο συγκεκριμένες απόψεις. Επίσης, αν κάνουμε ένα zine ή ένα χειροποίητο βιβλίο ή ένα βιβλίο offset, ο τρόπος διαφέρει. Ένα zine με λίγα αντίτυπα μπορεί να το τυπώσουμε όλο εμείς εδώ, να το δέσουμε όλο εμείς». Μια τέτοια διαδικασία είναι λογικό να οδηγεί κάθε φορά σε νέους πειραματισμούς, όσον αφορά τα υλικά και τις τεχνικές εκτύπωσης, κάτι που εκ των πραγμάτων ουσιαστικά αποκλείει τη μαζική παραγωγή και την παραδοσιακή συνεργασία με έναν επαγγελματία τυπογράφο. Όπως διευκρινίζει η Σύλβια, «Για όποιο project γίνεται στο Void, εμείς κάνουμε fund. Άρα, στην ουσία, όλα αυτά ξεκίνησαν να είναι handmade, μικρής παραγωγής και limited γιατί τα κάναμε μόνοι μας εδώ και σε καμία περίπτωση δε θα μπαίναμε στη διαδικασία κάτι που είναι χειροποίητο να είναι μαζικής παραγωγής». Αυτή η δημιουργικότητα, που αφήνεται αδιαπραγμάτευτα ελεύθερη είτε φτιάχνουν ένα zine για έναν νέο φωτογράφο είτε συνεργάζονται με ένα πιο γνωστό όνομα, οδηγεί αβίαστα τους Void στο επόμενο κάθε φορά project. Η Σύλβια εξηγεί ότι το μόνο κριτήριο για την επιλογή του εκάστοτε καλλιτέχνη είναι «η αισθητική μας». Να λοιπόν με τι καταπιάνονται αυτήν την περίοδο οι Void και η γοητευτικά σκοτεινή αισθητική τους: Δύο workshops στο τέλος του Οκτώβρη και αρχές Νοέμβρη, με δύο φωτογράφους, τον Todd Hido και τον Mark Power, και τρία νέα βιβλία.

The Holy Trinity that forms the team of Void, aka Myrto Steirou, Sylvia Sachini and João Linneu, has been creating for the last three years experimental editions of photography, making quite an impression in international fairs and landing important collaborations with acclaimed photographers for their workshops. Our discussion with Myrto and Sylvia explains the success of their work and events: it's just a story of love for photography – and passion for alternative print publications.

heir excitement when describing their work in progress is impressive; this kind of a “creative high” they can't wait to channel into 8 different kind of papers and print in 5 different ways- exactly like they did with the book “Meat”, by Olivier Pin-Fat. And this all started because, as Myrto says, “we were looking for a way to cover our own needs, to find a space that would not require a big budget, to find alternative ways of presentation, such as zines”.

Nine zines by young Greek photographers was what they presented, with great success, at the opening of their Void studio, and “we liked the process of their creation, so we decided to go on with this practice”.

What makes Void different is that they treat every publication like a new work of art. “We believe that we are part of the work.

The process may be different, depending on the needs of every project”, explains Myrto. “An artist can give their images and tell us that we are free to do whatever we want, or maybe somebody else may have a more specific opinion. Also, depending on whether we are dealing with a zine or a hamdmade book or an offset book, our approach varies. A zine that comes in a few copies may be printed here, by us, we will be the ones that bind it".

Such a procedure is very likely to lead in new experimentations, as far as the materials and the printing methods are concerned, which basically makes it impossible to proceed with mass production and with a traditional collaboration with a printing professional. Sylvia is very clear about it: “Every project in Void is funded by us. So, basically, everything just started to be handmade and of a limited production, because we were doing everything ourselves, and we could not have decided to produce massively something which is handmade”.

This kind of creativity, let non-negociably free, no matter what the project - whether they are preparing a zine for a young photographer or they are collaborating with someone more celebrated – easily leads Void to their next project, every time.

Sylvia explains that the only criterion for choosing each artist is “our aesthetics."

This is, then, what Void and their captivating dark aesthetics are engaged with these days: Two workshops at the end of October and beginning of November, with two photographers, Todd Hido and Mark Power and three new books.

Περήφανη για όλα τα αντικείμενα που δημιουργεί η ΙΝΟΜΟ, στον σχεδιασμό των οποίων συμμετέχει προσωπικά, η Βίβιαν Παράσχου, ιδρύτρια αυτής της πρωτοποριακής εταιρείας χειροποίητων επίπλων από συνθετικές ρητίνες, μας συστήνει τις εξαιρετικές δυνατότητες ενός υλικού που αγαπούν οι αρχιτέκτονες – και μιλά με αγάπη για το design, καθώς πιστεύει ότι μπορεί να μας βοηθήσει να αλλάξουμε τον κόσμο.

α θεμέλια της ΙΝΟΜΟ βρίσκονται στην εμπειρία της οικογενειακής επιχείρησης επεξεργασίας συνθετικών ρητίνων. Πώς και γιατί πήρατε την απόφαση να δημιουργήσετε έπιπλα και αντικείμενα design από αυτό το υλικό; Η οικογενειακή επιχείρηση μου έδωσε τη δυνατότητα να γνωρίσω τις ιδιότητές του πολύ καλά. Όσον αφορά τον λόγο που ιδρύθηκε η ΙΝΟΜΟ, ξεκινάει απο παλιά. Ήθελα να γίνω αρχιτέκτονας. Δυστυχώς ο καθηγητής σχεδίου έκρινε ότι δεν θα τα κατάφερνα στις εξετάσεις. Έτσι κατέληξα να σπουδάζω Χρηματοικονομικά, αλλά η επιθυμία μου για την αρχιτεκτονική και το design με ακολουθούσε. Καθώς περνούσαν τα χρόνια, ανακάλυπτα τις προκλήσεις του design, ενώ παρατηρούσα ότι το υλικό που γνωρίζα τόσο καλά μπορούσε να δώσει λύσεις εκεί που αλλά υλικά δεν μπορούσαν. Ποιο ήταν το background σας ως τότε; Έπαιξαν ρόλο οι σπουδές ή οι επαγγελματικές σας εμπειρίες σε αυτήν την απόφαση; Σπούδασα Χρηματοικονομικά και Λογιστική στο Πανεπιστημίο Μακεδονίας και ακολούθησε το μεταπτυχιακό σε Management of Business, Innovation and Technology από το Πανεπιστημίο του Sheffield. Δούλευα εθελοντικά από τα 18, συμμετείχα σε δράσεις νεανικής επιχειρηματικότητας. Ταυτόχρονα, στον ελεύθερο χρόνο μου παρακολουθούσα μαθημάτα design και product design και καμιά φορά μπορεί να με έβρισκες στα αμφιθέατρα του Πολυτεχνείου. Τι ακριβώς προσφέρει η ΙΝΟΜΟ; Ελευθερία σχεδιασμού και φαντασίας. Μαζί μας ο πελάτης μπορεί να πραγματοποιήσει κάθε ιδέα που έχει φανταστεί. H INOMO είναι μία εταιρεία σχεδίασης και κατασκευής επίπλων και συνθέσεων εσωτερικού και εξωτερικού χώρου νέας γενιάς. Στόχος μας είναι η δημιουργία tailor made σχεδίων από ενισχυμένες συνθετικές ρητίνες, που συνδυάζουν πρωτοποριακές ιδέες, κομμένες και ραμμένες στα μέτρα των πελατών. Σε παλαιότερη συνέντευξή σας είχατε πει ότι «το design μπορεί να αλλάξει τον κόσμο». Πώς το εννοείτε και από πού αντλείτε την έμπνευσή σας για να το κάνετε; Οι τρέχουσες σκέψεις και δράσεις μας είναι που διαμορφώνουν το μέλλον και κανείς δεν είναι καλύτερος στη «διαμόρφωση» από τους αρχιτέκτονες και τους σχεδιαστές. Ξεκινάς αλλάζοντας την κοντινή σου σφαίρα, με πίστη στην επιρροή που έχεις στα πράγματα και τους ανθρώπους. Η έμπνευσή μου προέρχεται πολύ από τη φουτουριστική αρχιτεκτονική. Ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον έχει για μένα η εποχή μετά τον Β' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Eero Saarinen, Oscar Niemeyer, Zaha Hadid, Santiago Calatrava και César Pelli αποτελούν σημαντικές επιρροές.

Proud of every INOMO creation, in the designing process of which she is personally involved, Vivian Paraschou, the founder of this innovative company that designs handmade fiberglass furniture, introduces us to the exceptional qualities of a material favored by architects – and speaks about design with love, since she believes it can help us change the world.

T

he foundation of INOMO lies in the experience of your family's fiberglass fabrication business. How and why did you come to the decision to create furniture using this material?

The family business gave me the ability to get to know its properties very well. As far as the reason INOMO was founded, it goes far back.

I wanted to be an architect. Unfortunately, my design teacher thought I wouldn't make it in the introductory exams. Thus, I found myself studying Finance, but my desire for architecture and design would not settle. Along the years, I had discovered what kind of challenges design was facing, and I had noticed that the material I knew so well, could offer sollutions where other materials could not.

What was your background at the time? Did your studies or professional experience play any role on this decision?

I studied Finance and Accounting at the University of Macedonia and then I got my Master's Degree in Management of Business, Innovation and Technology from the University of Sheffield. I had been working as a volunteer since I was 18 and I had been taking part in youth entrepreneurship actions. And in my freetime, I was taking design and product design courses; sometimes you could even find me in the auditoriums of the Technical University.

What does INOMO exactly offer?

Freedom of design and imagination. With us, the client can realize every single idea they imagine. INOMO is a company that designs and manufactures indoor and outdoor furniture of a new generation.

Our goal is to create bespoke designs using reinforced synthetic resins, combining innovative ideas tailored for our customers.

In a previous interview you have said that “design can change the world”. How do you mean that and where do you find the inspiration to do this?

Our future is formed by our current thoughts and actions and no one is better in “forming” than architects and designers. You start by changing your surrounding sphere, having faith in the influence you can have on things and people. My inspiration comes from futurist architecture. I find very interesting the post World War II era. Eero Saarinen, Oscar Niemeyer, Zaha Hadid, Santiago Calatrava and César Pelli have important influence.

ow can the extroversion of Greek design be boosted?

Greek design has started finding its European character again, while reserving its identity. But how are you supposed to change the world if you insist on your localism and do not become a citizen of the world? If you don't travel to see other people's work and show your own? I think that Greek design can and has got to become a point of reference in the international map.

ώς μπορεί να αναπτυχθεί η εξωστρέφεια του ελληνικού design; Το ελληνικό design έχει αρχίσει να ξαναβρίσκει τον ευρωπαϊκό του χαρακτήρα διατηρώντας την ταυτότητά του. Πώς θα αλλάξεις όμως τον κόσμο αν παραμένεις τοπικιστής και δεν γίνεις πολίτης του; Αν δεν ταξιδέψεις να δεις τα έργα των άλλων αλλά και να διαδώσεις το δικό σου έργο; Για μένα το ελληνικό design μπορεί και πρέπει να γίνει σημείο αναφοράς στον παγκόσμιο χάρτη. Ποια είναι τα όνειρά σας για την ΙΝΟΜΟ; Θα ήθελα να μεγαλώνει και να δραστηριοποιείται στο εξωτερικό. Ακόμα δεν έχουμε υλοποιήσει ούτε το 5% από όσα θέλουμε να πραγματοποιήσουμε. Τα projects τα οποία με συγκινούν και με μαγνητίζουν είναι εκεί όπου το άτομο έρχεται σε επαφή με τον κόσμο, δηλαδή οι δημόσιοι χώροι, που απευθύνονται στο «έξω» σε σχέση με το «μέσα». Στην ΙΝΟΜΟ έχουμε ασχοληθεί με τον αστικό σχεδιασμό και το πώς ένας εξωτερικός χώρος μπορεί να φιλοξενήσει το κοινό.

What are your dreams for INOMO? I would like to watch it grow and trade abroad. We have realized hardly a 5% of all the things we would like to achieve. The projects that move me and appeal to me are the ones where the individual is getting in touch with the world, namely in the public space, which adresses the “outside” rather than the “inside”. In INOMO we have already dealt with urban design and with the ways an outdoor space can host the public. inomodesign.com

POST-CAMP: NOTES ON DRAG FASHION WORDS BY THANOS PAPADOGIANNIS Η Susan Sontag, δίνοντας μερικά τυπικά «camp» παραδείγματα στο κείμενό της «Notes on Camp» (1966), αναφέρεται μεταξύ άλλων στα μποά με πούπουλα και στα φορέματα με κρόσσια. Στο ίδιο δοκίμιο, η Sontag ορίζει το camp ως τη συνεχή αισθητική εμπειρία του κόσμου, που βάζει το στυλ πάνω από το περιεχόμενο, την αισθητική πάνω από την ηθική, την ειρωνεία πάνω από την τραγωδία.

ο φύλο, λοιπόν, βασίζεται στο στυλ, ένα drag show βασίζεται στην αισθητική και μια drag queen ειρωνεύεται αντί να θρηνεί. Είναι προφανές ότι το drag συμπυκνώνει όλα τα παραπάνω. Ως εικαστική μορφή τέχνης, είναι άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένο τόσο με την performance και με κάθε μορφή ενσώματης επιτέλεσης, όσο και με το φύλο. Το drag χωρίς το στυλ και την αισθητική στην πρώτη γραμμή, δε θα ήταν drag, και χωρίς την υπερβολή, το αφύσικο, την ψευδαίσθηση, την αμφισημία και το παιχνίδι, δε θα ήταν η πιο camp μορφή τέχνης. Και σίγουρα δε θα πετύχαινε τον στόχο του, όπως τον θέτει η Sontag: να εκθρονίσει το σοβαρό. Μέσα στον χρόνο Σε αυτήν την προσπάθεια, λοιπόν, για την επικράτηση του παιχνιδιού και της απόλαυσης ενάντια στη σοβαρότητα, το drag τροφοδοτεί και τροφοδοτείται από τη μόδα. When Susan Sontag gives some typical “camp” examples in her text “Notes on Camp” (1966), she refers, among others, to feather boas and fringe dresses. In that same essay, Sontag defines camp as the consistently aesthetic experience of the world, which places style over content, aesthetics over morality, irony over tragedy.

T

hus, gender is based on style, a drag show is based on aesthetics and a drag queen derides instead of mourning. It is obvious that drag condenses all of the above. As a visual form of art, it is indissolubly connected with performing and every form of corporeal performance, as well as with gender.

Drag would not be drag without style and aesthetics in the forefront and, without the exaggeration, the unnatural, the illusion, the ambiguity and the play, it would not be the most camp form of art.

And it would definitely not achieve its goal, the way Sontag puts it: to dethrone the serious.

Through the ages In this effort, therefore, for play and pleasure to prevail over seriousness, drag feeds and is also fed by fashion. But this is not a monoamorous relationship. It is a polyamorous one, and its members often act both together, touching and affecting societies, cultures and eras. Hence, already from the end of the 19th century, with vaudeville theatre, to the '60s, and from the perky '70s until today, drag queens and trans people revolt (remember Stonewall, 1969), they create whole scenes and become priestesses of LGBTQI+ communities, they become “mothers” in houses (in the ballroom scene of the '80s New York, for example), they run political campaigns against the rising of the alt-right (like the “Travesty for Germany” party does, in Germany, starting in 2017) and they now have their own weekly hour on BBC, with RuPaul's Drag Race!

In the meantime, Marsha P. Johnson, a drag queen and a black trans activist in Stonewall in 1969, is not afraid to combine five different necklaces in one look, to colour-block and to wear a huge blonde curly wig. Divine, John Waters' muse, is not afraid to wear the most extravagant, unnatural make-up with bold colours and lines, combined with huge, backbombed hair and mini dresses with tiger animal print. Sasha Velour, the winner of this year's RuPaul's Drag Race, is not afraid to jump from green and red wigs to being bald, she is not afraid to walk the line between a Las-Vegasshowgirl make-up and an alien-like blue face paint look.

Creating a drag persona Being a drag queen is not easy. Hours of preparation precede a drag show. DIY, as well as second-hand have played a major role in this. Many drag queens swap their clothes, in order to help constantly create new looks, while others spend hours and hours over a sewing machine. Second-hand stores are a drag show's best friend, since they offer affordable and smart solutions for refreshing a wardrobe and keeping the audience astonished. What's easier than remaking your old pair of jeans, in order to create a denim dress similar to the one that Britney Spears wore in American Music Awards? It surely costs less than looking for and buying the same one.

his reference to Britney Spears is not unintentional. Over time, drag performers are inspired by the superstars of the international showbiz, and sometimes even imitate them.

More often than not has a drag king impersonated Elvis Presley or David Bowie, or has a drag queen imitated Shirley Bassey, Madonna or Lady Gaga. All five of these examples of great stars have many times dared to make unnatural, eccentric appearances, thus creating their own style. So, a drag queen will wear orange velvet gowns like Shirley Bassey or a shell-shaped bra similar to Lady Gaga's, like a contemporary Venus of Botticelli.

Elective affinities We are living in a post-modern era and interaction, even recycling amongst artists is inevitable. Many drag performers have probably been influenced by David Bowie; on the other hand, we should not consider strange to assume that David Bowie’s androgynous style was influenced by drag queens. This is also true as far as fashion designers are concerned. It would not be considered unexpected if the punk movement and its mother, Vivienne Westwood, were influenced by the mothers of aesthetic freedom, the drag queens. Big prints, strong lines, androgynous style, multiple colour combinations, are all common both in drag queens and in Westwood’s ‘70s and ‘80s clothes.

Drag, therefore, has influenced and continues to influence fashion movements and designers. There is a big number of new, openly queer designers emerging internationally in the last years and making references to drag, as well as to issues of gender and sexuality, such as Diego Montoya and trans designer Pierre Davis.

So, the term “drag fashion” can now be readily used, not only due to the existence of drag designers and models, but also thanks to the inclusion of drag into mainstream.

At the same time, big designers and fashion houses, especially since the ‘80s, have often been using big lines and strong angles in their designs, while making vivid colour combinations, playing with stripes and polka dots. Fashion shares, then, elements of theatricality, play and fun, with drag, co-exists and gets inspired by it. Besides, it is not by accident that Andy Warhol, having chosen trans women and drag queens numerous times as models, has indelibly influenced fashion with his photographs and with the Interview magazine.

Beauty and naturality, then, come in second, and first comes the statement, the character of the person wearing the garment or the make-up. A heavy make-up and a bold sartorial choice can function “expressionistically” for a person, in the way these function for drag queens. Designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier have realized this: the iconoclastic cone-shaped bra that Madonna wore in “Blond Ambition World Tour” surely is something we would see on a drag queen. It would not be unreasonable to assume that Gaultier had been influenced by some bra of some drag queen. Besides, he himself has also many times used drag queens as models in his shows, his clothes have many references to costumes (e.g. huge hats and strong lines) and, in the past, Madonna has adopted pieces of the drag culture, such as voguing. Bottom line, a drag queen would definitely wear that corset.

α κομμάτια που θα φορούσε μια drag queen, βέβαια, είναι σίγουρα αναρίθμητα, καθώς ειδικά μέσα από το styling μπορείς να συνδυάσεις τα πάντα και το πιο απλό κοντομάνικο λευκό μπλουζάκι μπορεί να μετατραπεί σε μέρος του πιο εκκεντρικού συνόλου. f course, the pieces a drag queen would wear are unquestionably numerous, since, especially through styling, you can combine everything, and the plainest white T-shirt can become part of an eccentric ensemble. Some designers, influenced by DIY and pop, design clothes that could be part of a drag wardrobe, while others, influenced by the drag queens themselves, have created jewellery of a similar aesthetic. The famous dress with the newspaper print, presented by John Galliano in 2000, looks like a reference to Dada and to clothes made from paper and collage, reminding us of the way a drag queen makes gowns entirely out of newspapers and tape.

On the other hand, in certain designers, like Alexander McQueen, the trace left by drag performers such as Leigh Bowery is indisputable. From his first shows to his last, in 2009, we can spot McQueen's art not only in the combination of different patterns, in eccentric accessories and asymmetric designs, but also in the prevalence of an androgynous style. The influence of Leigh Bowery on McQueen seems to have grown over the years and in his last show, one can see Bowery's huge, distinctive lips, as well as suits that could have easily been made by the Australian performer and designer. It's worth mentioning that Lady Gaga, in the (eccentric) beginning of her career, had many times worn McQueen's creations, while rising to the star that affected drag like no other in the last decade; besides, she has stated that, through her art, she is doing a form of drag.

Donatella Versace, when asked, in a Vogue video, which art movement she would not like to see making a comeback in fashion, simply answered: “minimalism”. Drag is definitely maximalistic, and in the last years we have been watching drag artists and fashion houses attuning – drag queens are getting more representation on the runway – and we have been seeing strong statements in clothing collections. It is not a coincidence that, today, world famous drag queens wear pieces by major fashion houses.

Is camp the only point of connection between drag and fashion? Or is it that drag interacts directly with fashion, without any mediators, converses with it and affects it? Was the Met Gala 2019 “Camp: Notes on Fashion” its next step or the beginning of a new era? In any case, drag can combine in an ensemble those feather boas and fringe dresses Sontag refers to, and this image is definitely something that, through the hands of a good designer or stylist, can get into a contemporary fashion editorial.

Γιατί A Man To Pet; Cause I am a Man που του αρέσουν τα χάδια. Πόσων ετών ήσουν όταν έκανες το πρώτο σου σόου; Πώς αισθάνθηκες; Πρέπει να ήμουν έξι ή εφτά σε έναν αρραβώνα που ο πατέρας μου ήταν κουμπάρος! Πρώτα κάναμε μια χορογραφία που έμαθα σε δύο φίλες μου από τους New Kids on the Block και μετά βγήκα σόλο χανούμισσα στο κοινό κάνοντας τη Ζανέτ Καπούγια! Από πού παίρνεις έμπνευση για τις μεταμορφώσεις σου; Είμαι συλλέκτης και συλλέγω προσωπικότητες και ιδέες. Μια κυρία που ψωνίζει στο μπακάλικο της γειτονιάς, ένας ταξιτζής, μια σταρ του κινηματογράφου, ένα επαναστάτης, τα πάντα στη ζωή μπορούν να μου δώσουν έμπνευση, αλλά επιλεκτικά, με τα δικά μου γούστα. Ποια περσόνα αγαπάς να υποδύεσαι περισσότερο και γιατί; Ποιον θα ήθελες να υποδυθείς; Αχ τώρα!!! Δεκαέξι χρόνια έχω αγαπήσει πολλές περσόνες που υποδύομαι! Για να μην ξημερωθούμε, θα σου πω πολύ λίγες. Τρελαίνομαι να κάνω ότι είμαι μια 55άρα σταρ που βγαίνει από το μπάνιο με τις πετσέτες και την παίρνουν πάντα τηλέφωνο να της πούνε ότι τη θέλουν σε ένα συγκλονιστικό event που γίνεται σε πολύ λίγο χρόνο. Μετά, Raffaella Carrà, Cher, Liza Minnelli, Kate Moss, έναν γορίλλα, μια Βουλγάρα κυρία που έχασε το μάτι της από μια βόμβα με 6 βυζιά, μια νύφη, τη Νατάσα Γερασιμίδου, τη Madonna και πάει λέγοντας. Θα ήθελα πολύ να υποδυθώ την Grace Jones και τον Freddie Mercury. Αλλά είναι τόσο icons for me που δεν αγγίζονται. Τα σόου σου κάνουν αίσθηση εδώ και χρόνια στο Λονδίνο, έχεις κάνει συνεντεύξεις και features σε περιοδικά όπως το Time Out. Πώς νιώθεις όταν βλέπεις τον κόσμο να παρασύρεται από τις performances σου; Με κάνει χαρούμενο να κάνω κόσμο και κοσμάκη να περνάει καλά, μου δίνει απίστευτη ενέργεια, είναι το μόνο που με ενδιαφέρει, να θυμούνται αυτήν τη βραδιά και να λένε περάσαμε πολύ όμορφα. Δεν με ενδιαφέρει αν δε θυμούνται το όνομά μου. Τώρα το ότι τυχαίνει να έχω κάνει και κάποια εξώφυλλα και συνεντεύξεις παγκοσμίου φήμης με συγκινεί. Τι σημαίνει κακή βραδιά για σένα στη σκηνή (αν έχεις); Δε μπορεί να αρέσεις σε όλους. Όταν το κοινό είναι στεγνό, στεγνώνει και η performance μου. Περνάω μια θλίψη δεκαπέντε λεπτών και μετά λέω σε όποιον αρέσουμε, για τους άλλους δε θα μπορέσουμε. Οι performances μου είναι αλήθεια ότι δεν είναι για το ευρύτερο κοινό. Ποιο είναι το κρυφό σου όπλο για να κάνεις το κοινό να παραληρεί; Το ταλέντο μου σε αυτό που κάνω.

Performances all over the world, check. Gigs in events such as Glastonbury and the European MTV Awards, check. Collaborations with big names of the drag scene, check. Photoshoots and interviews, check.

Enthousiastic audience, check. Thematic pop-up restaurants, check. Nevertheless, A Man To Pet, one of the top performers in London's drag scene, armed with a (not so secret) weapon of a talent that exudes from extravagant transformations and eccentric shows, states that he does not care if people don't remember his name. He only cares about fun.

ow would you introduce yourself to a Greek granny who loves dubbed soap operas?

By lip-syncing with no sound.

How old were you when you did you first show? How did it feel?

I was around six or seven, in an engagement party where my father was the best man! First, we did a New Kids on the Block choreography, which I had taught two friends of mine, and then I went solo, as a harem girl, doing Janet Capuya!

Where do you get inspiration for your looks from?

I am a collector and I collect personalities and ideas. A lady shopping at the neighbourhood's grocery store, a taxi driver, a movie star, a rebel, everything in life can give me inspiration, but selectively, only to my taste.

Which persona do you love impersonating the most and why? Who would you like to do?

Oh wow!!! In sixteen years, I' ve loved many personas! I' ll name just a few, or we 'll be here all day. I love doing a 55-year-old star who' s just got out of the bathroom covered in towels and they call her on the phone to say that they need her for an amazing event that has to be done really soon. Then, it's Raffaella Carrà, Cher, Liza Minnelli, Kate Moss, a gorilla, a Bulgarian lady with 6 tits that has lost her eye to a bomb, a bride, Natassa Gerasimidou, Madonna and so on. I would love to impersonate Grace Jones and Freddie Mercury. But they are such huge icons, you can't touch them.

Your shows have been making an impression in London for years, you' ve done interviews and features for magazines such as Time Out. How do you feel when you watch people getting carried away by your performances?

Making all kinds of people having fun makes me happy, it gives me tremendous energy, it's the only thing I care about, people to remenber this night and say, we had such a nice time. I don't care if they don't remember my name. Of course, the fact that I've done some international covers and interviews is moving.

What does a bad night mean for you (if you got any)?

Not everyone can like you. When the audience is dry, my performance dries out too. I experience some sadness for fifteen minutes and then I'm like, I'm ok with whomever likes me, I can do nothing about the rest. It's true that my performances don't suit a wide audience.

What is your secret weapon for making the audience go wild?

My talent in what I do.

χεις συνεργαστεί με το Ru Paul's Drag Race αλλά έχεις πει ότι το βρίσκεις «πολύ εμπορικό» και ότι δε θα συμμετείχες σε κάτι τέτοιο. Πιστεύεις ότι αυτή η εμπορικότητα δίνει στην drag σκηνή μια δόση mainstream που αναιρεί τον εναλλακτικό της χαρακτήρα; Αλλοιώνει τον αναρχικό και εναλλακτικό χαρακτήρα της drag σκηνής. Μετατρέπει δηλαδή το sharpness του drag σε νερόβραστη ψυχαγωγία για συνταξιούχους. Νιώθεις ότι τέτοιες ερωτήσεις αλλοιώνουν την αισθητική αξία της drag κουλτούρας; Πρέπει να συζητάμε για στυλ, εικαστική αξία, mainstream και εμπορικότητα; Πρέπει να συζητάμε μόνο για σεξ.

Tι ερωτήσεις θα ήθελες να σου κάνουν; Προσωπικές. Γιατί άνοιξες εστιατόριο και γιατί το χαρακτηρίζεις... υποβρύχιο; Άνοιξα εστιατόριο so I can feed people with shit. Το χαρακτηρίζω υποβρύχιο επειδή δεν είμαι της επιφάνειας, είμαι drag queen με βάθος. Έχει εδώ και δέκα χρόνια που ανοίγουμε με τον συνεργάτη μου και set designer Tony Hornecker pop-up εστιατόρια. Εσύ μιλάς για το «Gender Pacific», που ήταν λες και έμπαινες σε υποβρύχιο, με χαρακτηριστικά κρουαζιερόπλοιου που είχε βυθιστεί. Οι πελάτες γίνονταν επιβάτες του 1920 με ρούχα που τους δίναμε, μετά από είκοσι λεπτά το υποβρύχιο βυθιζόταν και γίνονταν όλοι φαντάσματα. Αργότερα ερχόταν μια γοργόνα (εγώ) και παρουσίαζε το σόου, cause always the show must go on, in life and death! Με ποιους άλλους εκπροσώπους της drag σκηνής έχεις συνεργαστεί και με ποιους θα ήθελες να συνεργαστείς, εντός και εκτός Ελλάδας και γιατί; Στο Λονδίνο έχω δουλέψει και δουλεύω με όλους δεκαέξι χρόνια τώρα, έχω γνωρίσει τεράστια ταλέντα, παλιούς και καινούριους, είμαι τυχερός που ξεκίνησα με τον Jonny Woo, που φέτος γιορτάζει τα είκοσι χρόνια στην καριέρα του. Αγαπώ τον John Sizzle και με συγκινούν η Lavinia, η Penny Arcade και ο Boy George σαν πρεσβύτεροι. Θα ήθελα να συνεργαστώ με Divine, Ρένα Βλαχοπούλου και Bette Davis, υπήρξαν οι καλύτερες drag queens κατά τη γνώμη μου, αλλά αν θες σε κάτι πιο ζωντανό, που να μην έχω συνεργαστεί ακόμα και θα ήθελα, είναι οι Bette Midler και Pedro Almodόvar. Και όλες τις Κούκλες, όπως Εύα Κουμαριανού και Ρία! Οι Κούκλες είναι μεγάλο σχολείο, έχω φέρει στην Ελλάδα πολύ κόσμο της drag σκηνής, όποτε τους πηγαίνω στις Κούκλες, μένουν άφωνοι, είναι καταπληκτικά ταλέντα. Διαφέρει το κοινό στην Ελλάδα από το κοινό στο Λονδίνο; Το κοινό είναι το ίδιο, η γλώσσα είναι διαφορετική. Δυστυχώς δεν το έχω βρει πολύ ακόμα στην Ελλάδα. Ο A Man To Pet είναι foreign χαρακτήρας, δηλαδή παίζω καλύτερα και πιο χιουμουριστικά σαν ξένος που έχει τη λάθος προφορά. Τώρα, ας πούμε, που απαντάω είμαι στο αεροπλάνο για Μιλάνο και πάω να κάνω σόου εκεί! Με ξετρελαίνει που θα μιλάω σπασμένα αγγλοιταλικά. Στην Ελλάδα δυσκολεύομαι γιατί έχω μείνει και 24 χρόνια πίσω και δεν είχα φανταστεί ποτέ ότι αυτό που κάνω θα με καλούσαν και στην Ελλάδα να το κάνω. Αλλά η αλήθεια είναι ότι έχω και ένα μικρό fan club στην Ελλάδα, χε χε. Πώς φαντάζεσαι τον εαυτό σου σε δέκα χρόνια από τώρα; Σε δέκα χρόνια δεν μπορώ να τον φανταστώ, αλλά μπορώ να τον φανταστώ σε 33 χρόνια, ίδιο και λίγο νεότερο! Παίρνω παραδείγματα από τη Cher.

ou have worked with Ru Paul's Drag Race but you've said that you find it too “commercialized” and that you wouldn't participate in something like this. Do you think that this commercialism makes the drag scene somewhat more mainstream, cancelling its alternative charactere?

It changes the anarchistic and alternative character of the drag scene. It converts the sharpness of drag into wishy-washy entertainment for the retired.

Do you feel that this kind of questions alter the aesthetic value of drag culture? Should we talk about style, artistic value, mainstream and commerciality?

We should only talk about sex.

What kind of questions would you like to be asked?

Personal.

Why did you open a restaurant and why do you call it a submarine?

I opened a restaurant so I can feed people with shit. I call it a submarine because I am not a shallow person, I am a Drag Queen with depth. For ten years we've been starting pop-up restaurants with my associate and set designer, Tony Hoirnecker. You're talking about “Gender Pacific”, where you actually felt like going into a submarine. The customers would turn into passengers from the 1920s, wearing the clothes we would give them; then, twenty minutes later, the submarine would sink and we would all become ghosts. Afterwards, a mermaid (me) would come and present the show, cause always the show must go on, in life and death!

Which other representatives of the drag scene have you worked with and with whom would you like to collaborate, in and out of Greece, and why?

For sixteen years, now, in London, I have been working with everybody, I' ve met huge talents, old and new, I' ve been lucky to have started with Jonny Woo, who is celebrating his twenty years of career this year. I love John Sizzle and, from the seniors, I am moved by Lavinia, Penny Arcade and Boy George. I would like to collaborate with Divine, Rena Vlachopoulou and Bette Davis, they were the best drag queens, in my opinion, but, if you need something kind of more alive, that I have not worked with yet, I would like that to be Bette Midler and Pedro Almodόvar.

And everyone in Koukles, like Eva Koumarianou and Ria! Koukles is a big school, I' ve brought lots of people from the drag scene in Greece; when I bring them to Koukles, they are left speechless, they have amazing talent.

Is the audience in Greece different than the one in London?

The audience is the same, the language is different. In Greece, unfortunately, I haven't quite figured it out yet. A Man To Pet is a foreign character, namely, I perform better and funnier as a foreigner with the wrong accent. For instance, now that I am answering your questions I am on a flight to Milano, where I will be giving a show! I really love that I will be speaking in broken english-italian. I find it harder in Greece, because I' ve been away for 24 years and I could never imagine that they would invite me to do in Greece what I do. But, truth be told, I also have a small fan club in Greece, he-he.

How do you imagine yourself in ten years from now?

I cannot imagine myself in ten years, but I can imagine myself in 33 years; I 'm the same, just a little bit younger! My example is Cher.

Όσον αφορά τα γλυκά, η Marika προτείνει να δοκιμάσεις το διαχρονικό τσιζκέικ ή μια πίτα μπανόφι. Στο Marika Tarts μπορείς ακόμα να βρεις χορτοφαγικά πιάτα και σπιτικά επιδόρπια, όπως ρυζόγαλο και κορμό σοκολάτας, καθώς επίσης και σπιτική λεμονάδα με τζίντζερ και δυόσμο, που θα σε δροσίσει και θα σου δώσει την ενέργεια που χρειάζεσαι για να συνεχίσεις τις ατέλειωτες βόλτες σου στην καρδιά του κέντρου της πόλης!

From 10 in the morning to 8 in the afternoon, Marika serves a selection of imaginative tarts that are baked every morning, staying true to their philosophy, using only pure ingredients while remaining a value for money option. Among the savory dishes you will find tarts with beef sausage, chicken and a Greek version of the well-known quiche Lorraine with smoked pancetta from Thrace, heavy cream, graviera cheese and green peppers. When it comes to the desserts, Marika suggests that you try the all time classic cheesecake or a banoffee pie. At Marika Tarts you can also find vegetarian dishes and homemade desserts, like rice pudding and chocolate log (Kormos), as well as homemade lemonade with ginger and spearmint that will cool you down and give you the boost you need to continue your never-ending walks at the heart of the city centre!
