FY23 Annual Report

“When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.”
- Maya Angelou

A NOTE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT & CEO

Thank you for helping us feed our community.

Thanks to your help, Ozarks Food Harvest provided 20 million meals in the past year through its network of faith-based and community charities across a third of the state of Missouri. That’s huge because the last year has been a perfect storm as families continued to deal with increased childcare, housing and food costs.

As the demand for food increased, we were able to serve as the backbone of charitable food giving in southwest Missouri. That’s because of people like you. Your gift ensured a child had enough food to eat over the weekend through the Weekend Backpack Program and a grandmother continued to receive a box of nutritious food every month through the Senior Food Program.

For every dollar donated, we were able to provide $10 worth of groceries. Your gifts to Ozarks Food Harvest have made a difference in the lives of so many families facing hunger such as Billie’s. “With the price of food going up, it's hard to be able to afford the things that you usually get,” said Billie, a neighbor receiving food from one of our network charities. “I appreciate Ozarks Food Harvest so much for doing this for us. We feel really blessed. Thank you.”

Challenges are on the horizon for the new year and there’s still work to be done. But, we know with supporters like you that we will be able to serve the children, families and seniors facing hunger across southwest Missouri. You can rest assured that your gift is being spent wisely because Ozarks Food Harvest continues to spend 96 cents of every dollar on food distribution.

Thank you for helping us end hunger in southwest Missouri. Your time and gifts allow us to Transform Hunger into Hope.

With gratitude,

INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY

Through a network of more than 270 faith-based and community charities, Ozarks Food Harvest helped provide 20 million meals to hundreds of thousands of our neighbors facing hunger last year.

Ozarks Food Harvest invested in local communities by increasing distribution through the Mobile Food Pantry Program, drive-thru food pantries and Senior Mobile Produce Pantry. The Food Bank also awarded $525,000 in grants across our charity network to help sustain and expand hunger-relief

across southwest Missouri.

Donations provided by grocery and retail companies.

Over 20 MILLION meals!

We are incredibly grateful for all of the generous

"You can tell some kids come back really hungry when school starts in August, and families feel the need on long weekends. If they’re hungry, you’ll see discipline issues. They’re just not with it. When we give them food, it helps them stay in school and get better grades and attendance."

– Jackie Scholfield, Crocker School Pantry coordinator and library aide

“The Mobile Food Pantry has been a godsend for me. I don’t qualify for food stamps and with the cost of inflation on food, it sometimes has been a struggle. So, to have the produce box and a few of the other items has really helped me get by month to month.”

- Susan, received food through a Mobile Food Pantry

MOBILE FOOD PANTRY

The Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry and Senior Produce Pantry provided food to 63,000 people facing hunger with 765,000 meals in FY23. The trucks traveled 31,100 miles to more than 250 distribution sites across 11 counties.

SNAP OUTREACH

Ozarks Food Harvest provides application assistance and information to individuals applying for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance benefits. In FY23, SNAP helped provide 983,719 meals. The local economic impact is estimated to generate $4.3 million.

SENIOR FOOD BOXES

This program provides 4,200 income-eligible seniors with healthy USDA food at senior centers, food pantries and churches across 28 counties. In FY23, volunteers assembled 49,400 boxes providing 1.2 million meals!

“Volunteering makes me feel good, like I’m giving back. We provide access to food to people who need it. I know that I’m helping someone in the community even if I’ve never met them.”
– Jessie Lucero, Ozarks Food Harvest volunteer

RETAIL PICK-UP PROGRAM

Ozarks Food Harvest leads the way for Feeding America food banks when it comes to its Retail Pick-Up Program. We were one of the first food banks in the U.S. to establish a program of this kind, serving as a pilot food bank for Walmart. The program partners with retailers to rescue food that is no longer sellable, but remains safe for consumption.

Retail partners donated over 7.6 million pounds of food to help provide 6 million meals in FY23.

COMMUNITY

PARTNERSHIPS

Businesses, organizations, churches and individuals host drives and cause marketing promotions to help make meals happen. Did you know that in FY23, nearly 300 local partners helped provide more than 1.8 million meals through food drives, fundraisers and cause marketing campaigns?

In FY23, Ozarks Food Harvest drivers and partner charities picked up 7,640,995 pounds of food from local retailers. Currently, 156 retailers participate in the Retail Pick-Up Program within The Food Bank’s 28-county service area.

SPECIAL EVENTS SPREAD AWARENESS AND RAISE FUNDS

Every year, the Woodturners of Southwest Missouri partner with The Food Bank for Empty Bowls.

In September 2022, Hunger Action Month helped provide 186,000 meals.

WE COULDN’T GIVE HOPE WITHOUT OUR NETWORK OF FAITH-BASED AND COMMUNITY CHARITIES

Our partner charities work on the frontlines of hunger-relief. About 270 food pantries, community kitchens, emergency shelters, child and senior centers, after-school sites, churches and schools serve thousands of people each year.

In FY23, Ozarks Food Harvest provided over $525,000 in grants for food and infrastructure, including freezers and coolers, to help agency partners distribute more food to families.

“We’re on a fixed income and with the economy cannot afford to pay our regular monthly bills, buy groceries and gas. Everything has gotten so expensive. A friend told me she’d gone to the food pantry to get some help. I’d never been to a food pantry and was embarrassed about going, but the people there were nice and the food I received was enough to help get me through until the next week when I got my check. I am so thankful for this blessing.”

– Elaine, received food from her local pantry

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR HUNGER HEROES!

In FY23, nearly 3,700 volunteers generously gave 29,294 hours to Ozarks Food Harvest. They processed 5.3 million pounds of food.

58,500 Weekend Backpacks & Summer Sacks were assembled

72,964 pounds of local produce was planted and harvested by the Glean Team and Plant-A-Row participants

49,500 Senior Food boxes were assembled to provide 1.2 million meals

3.4 million pounds of rescued product and donations were sorted and packed

“If you give of yourself, just watch what starts happening. Had I known what all Ozarks Food Harvest does for the community, I would have been here a long time ago.”

-Teresa Fairbanks, Ozarks Food Harvest volunteer
