It is a general truth that we shall reap what we sow. If a man sows beans, he doesn’t reap corn. If he sows corn, he doesn’t reap beans. This same principle is true in the spiritual world too. The Wiseman penned, “He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail” (Proverbs 22:8). Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered Job, “Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same” (Job 4:8). Paul warned, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting” (Galatians 6:7-8). The Northern Kingdom, Israel, had sown the wind (wickedness – LY), now they would reap the whirlwind (judgment – LY). Two chapters later Hosea again cries against Israel, “Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; … ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; …” (Hosea 10:12-13). God holds both nations and individuals accountable for their actions. To the nations God has said, “Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the Lord: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this” (Jeremiah 9:9)? When Daniel revealed the meaning of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, he said, “And he (God – LY) changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wine, and knowledge to them that know understanding” (Daniel 2:21). All men, as individuals, are warned, “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14). Paul wrote to those at Corinth, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad” (2nd Corinthians 5:10). Both nations and men are accountable to God. When a nation reaches a certain degree of sin, God will come upon it with judgment. The only reason God didn’t deliver the land of Canaan unto Abraham immediately was because her sins had not yet reached the point of judgment, “But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the sin of the Amorites is not yet full” (Genesis 15:16). If there had been ten righteous in Sodom and Gomorrah, it would have been spared, “And he said, O let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake” (Genesis 18:32). Salt was used as a preservative for foods and after it lost its savour, it was cast into the pathway to kill the weeds. Jesus said, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men” (Matthew 5:13). When wickedness reaches a certain degree and righteousness looses its influence for good, judgment will come. We don’t know when this will be, but this much we do know, nations, the world itself, and all individuals who sow to the wind will reap the whirlwind when judgment does come.
