To date their prophetic work, we turn to the internal statements contained within the book. This is the best we can do to date these books. Obadiah foretold the doom of Edom, Jonah the fall of Nineveh, and Joel the judgment of the nations and exaltation of Israel. We have already looked at these books. Amos, Hosea, and Micah appeared on the prophetic scene in the eighth century. These were the days of Assyrian domination. We have already looked at these books too. Isaiah was a contemporary of these men and one of the Major Prophets as well. Since we are studying the Minor Prophets at this time, we have not yet looked at the message of Isaiah. Remember, the only difference between a Major Prophet and a Minor Prophet is the length of their books. One is just as important and relevant as the other. The main work of the eighth century prophets was to call Israel unto repentance and to warn her of Assyrian captivity if they did not repent. Israel refused to repent and was carried away into Assyrian captivity, leaving only Judah as God’s heritage. Zephaniah appears in the next group of prophets alongside of Jeremiah, (another of the Major Prophets), Nahum, and Habakkuk. All these prophets are seventh century prophets. The message of Nahum is the fall of Nineveh, the great capitol city of Assyria. Habakkuk prophesied of the judgment of Judah, and her being carried away by the Babylonians or Chaldeans, and then God’s judgment upon the Chaldeans. The message of Zephaniah is one of judgment upon all nations, including Israel and Judah, God’s own people. No nation is exempt from the judgment of God. God wants the world to know and to understand that God rules in and over the nations of mankind. We know little about Zephaniah. His name means “Jehovah hides” (Hailey, p. 222), or “he whom Yahweh has hidden or protected” (Smith, p. 378). Some scholars believe that since he prophesied in the days of Josiah, he may have been born in the days of Josiah’s grandfather, Manasseh, who did indeed fill Jerusalem with innocent blood, “Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, til he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another; …” (2nd Kings 21:16). It may have been that Zephaniah, the great-great-grandson of Hezekiah, had to be hidden from Manasseh, who himself was a son of Hezekiah, “And Hezekiah slept with his fathers: and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead” (2nd Kings 20:21). This is speculative information based upon the name of the prophet, his shared heritage with Hezekiah, and the wickedness of Manasseh. Thus, in this point, we would not be dogmatic. Some scholars believe that Zephaniah lived in Jerusalem because of his mention of Jerusalem as “… this place …”, perhaps indicating that Zephaniah lived there, “I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place …” (Zephaniah 1:4). This, however, is highly speculative on their part. There is no more mention of Zephaniah’s personal information, nor is any needed. The import of the book is the message, not the messenger. The same is true, and should be said, of God’s teachers today.

We often speak of missed opportunities. How would you describe opportunity? The ancient Greeks pictured opportunity as a woman with her hair dangling down in front, and her head shaved in the middle of her head back. As she walks she does so quietly. If one does not catch hold of her hair as she passes there is nothing to grasp to pull her back. That indeed is a vivid picture of missed opportunities. To the Ephesians, Paul wrote, “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Eph.5:16). It is interesting to note the footnote in the ASV 1901 translation of this verse which state: “buying up the opportunity.” In Colossians 4:5 we are instructed to, “Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.” Again, the footnote of the ASV 1901 reads, “buying up the opportunity.” While the word opportunity is fresh in our thoughts, consider, please, the following acrostic lesson from the word opportunity: O ... Overcome evil with good (Rom.12:21). P ... Preserve your family (Eph.6:1-4). P ... Prepare to meet God (Amos 4:1-2). O ... Obey the laws of the land (Rom.13:1-2). R ... Repent of your sins (Acts 17:30-31). T ... Take account of your life (2 Cor.13:5). U ... Undo wrong toward others (Matt.5:23). N ... Name the name of Christ as Savior (Acts 22:16). I ... Increase in knowledge (2 Tim.2:15). T ... Tell others about Christ (Mk.16:15-16). Y ... Yield to God (Rom.6:16). My friend, are there changes needed in your life? Perhaps you are thinking of repenting of your sins (Lk.13:3), confessing Christ and being immersed “for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38) later on. If an unfaithful member of the Lord’s church you may have been thinking about being restored in the future. In addressing the urgency of salvation, Paul wrote, “ ... behold now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor.6:2). Always remember, Satan wants you to give him now, and the Lord tomorrow which results in dying unprepared to meet God! Beloved, why not let today be the day of doing whatever is necessary, according to the Bible, to please God. Yes, seize today’s opportunity before opportunity passes you by!

Registration will start at 5:30 pm, with the meal and presentations to follow. Topics covered at the seminar include tips and strategies to make local beef and forage producers more successful. Guest speakers for the evening will be Dr.’s Kevin Bradley, MU State Weed Specialist and Michael Flythe, USDA-ARS Rumen Microbiologist, Lexington, KY. Bradley is to speak on weed management considerations for
pastures and hayfields. Bradley will emphasize research that was conducted in Howell County in 2016. Flythe will present on the role of red clover isoflavones in livestock production; red clover isoflavones may improve protein utilization and help neutralize tall fescue toxicosis. Pre-registration is required with a fee of $15 per person. Registration includes meal and reference materials. Deadline to pre-register is March 1, 2017. Late registration fee $20 per person.
