Dear Local Partners

I am honoured to welcome you to the first edition of ‘Malta Buyers’ Guide and Relocation Magazine’. Malta offers so much to so many, and I am proud to call it home. With a population of around 500,000, Malta is the jewel of the Mediterranean. An island bursting with personality and charm, exquisite weather, English language, vibrant cuisine, abundant history and culture, bustling city centres and laid-back coastal towns. Gozo, with only 35,000 residents, offers a more laid-back lifestyle and is just a 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland. Both markets are represented by Oyster Christie’s International Real Estate for residential sales, rentals and commercial properties.

As the smallest member of the European Union, Malta has one of the highest expatriate populations. Expatriates choose Malta as a relocation destination for more reasons than the warm climate – there are numerous financial and lifestyle incentives for foreigners looking to become a resident on the island, these include advantageous tax incentives and various visa residence programmes, which require purchasing or renting property on the island.

In this issue, we feature how-to guides on relocation to the island, a selection of our finest residential properties for sale and to let in Malta, including luxury villas perched high on the hills, to traditional townhouses, countryside farmhouses, centuries-old palazzos and contemporary seafront apartments in the urban centres, and we explore the fascinating world of Christie’s International Real Estate.

If you have been thinking about buying a Mediterranean getaway and experiencing our island’s vibrant history and culture, let us make it happen in 2023. We are here to assist you with all your relocation needs and offer you a personalised service to make your transition as smooth as possible. Equally, if you are looking to buy or rent a home anywhere in the world, we are here to help through our global Christie’s International Real Estate network.

Kind Regards,

LIVING – WHY MALTA?

Dreaming of lazy days by the pool basking under the Mediterranean sun? Aside from the natural limestone beaches, glittering blue sea and perpetual sunshine, Malta offers centuries of fascinating history, Michelin-starred dining destinations, English language, attractive tax incentives, close proximity to the rest of Europe, record-low crime rates, exceptional national healthcare, laid-back Mediterranean lifestyle and an extremely consistent property market, making it a perfect choice for global expats and business headquarters.

MALTA’S PROPERTY MARKET

Investing in real estate in the EU’s smallest member state has continually proven to be an attractive prospect. With demand from both domestic and international buyers, property in Malta continues to enjoy long-term growth with a long list of highly sought-after locations. The island’s attractive tax regime adds to the appeal for foreign buyers seeking to acquire residence.

Malta and sister island Gozo offer a varied choice of real estate to suit an array of lifestyles, including luxury villas perched high on the hills, to traditional townhouses, countryside farmhouses, centuries-old palazzos, and contemporary seafront apartments in the urban centres.

OPTIONS FOR FOREIGN BUYERS

As a foreign national, you do not need to be a Maltese resident to purchase property, there are many rules and regulations to make the buying process seamless for international buyers. To purchase property anywhere on the island, you will need an AIP (Acquisition of Immovable Property) Permit, with an exception to this rule if you purchase property within an SDA (Special Designated Area). If you purchase property within an SDA Development, there is no limit to the amount of properties purchased and no need for an AIP permit.

Special Designated Area is a status granted to qualifying residences within luxury lifestyle developments that allow both EU and non-EU nationals to purchase property in Malta with the same buying rights as locals, without the need to obtain an AIP permit. In addition, any buyer can purchase a property in an SDA as an investment property rather than a primary residence.

There are a wide range of SDA lifestyle developments to choose from on the island. Whether you prefer the hustle and bustle of urban life, or looking for a residence with a more countryside feel, there are many options to choose from. Most SDAs have a variety of facilities and amenities such as communal swimming pools, underground parking and landscaped outdoor areas.

Investing in

Malta

Maltese real estate has continually maintained its status as a lucrative investment opportunity for both locals and expatriates with property prices steadily increasing in value, particularly over the last 20 years. One of the major reasons why property and land is a highly valuable commodity is due to the island’s small size and growing population. In fact, buying Maltese real estate may be one of the best property transactions that you could do in Europe. According to a report by Eurostat, property prices in Malta rose by 41.6% between 2010 and 2020, much higher compared with other EU nations. Even the pandemic hardly affected the local property market. In fact, at the end of 2020, results showed that the property development industry registered better results than the preceding year.

At the Southern-most point of Europe, Malta is an attractive place to live. The charming island offers an abundance of history and culture, sunny Mediterranean climate, stable economy, low crime rates, English as an official language and an established healthcare system. For anyone looking to invest in buy-to-let property in Malta, there are few investments that appreciate in value so quickly. Owning rental properties is an excellent way to generate a steady and guaranteed income – the high numbers of expatriates and foreign students looking to live, work and study in Malta means that there is year-round demand for rental properties all over the island.

Why buying property in Malta is a good investment

REASONS TO INVEST IN MALTESE REAL ESTATE:

• Strong and Resilient Property Market

• Eligibility for European Residence and Citizenship

• Advantageous Tax Incentives

• Warm Mediterranean Climate

• Politically Stable and Safe Country

• Excellent Standard of Living

• Close Proximity to European Countries

WHERE TO INVEST IN MALTA?

As the smallest member of the EU, the island itself is tiny at just 316km². Due to Malta’s size, every area is easily accessible and consequently all ‘good’ places to invest in. However, it is important to choose a location that matches your lifestyle, to get the very best out of your investment property. Some of the best real estate investment opportunities can be found in the urban centres, particularly modern apartments in St. Julian’s and Sliema. These areas are renowned for restaurants, shopping, nightlife and the celebrated seafront promenade. Property in the capital city Valletta is highly sought-after, offering a glimpse into the past, with grand baroque architecture and an eclectic mix of retail, coffee shops and restaurants. Madliena, Mellieha and Gozo offer luxurious villas in prestigious residential areas. Special Designated Areas (SDAs) Developments are ideal investment locations, offering the luxury of convenient living with surrounding facilities and amenities.

SDA DEVELOPMENTS (SPECIAL DESIGNATED AREA)

‘Special Designated Area’ (SDA) is a status granted to luxury lifestyle developments of apartments and penthouses that allow both EU and non-EU nationals to purchase a property in Malta with the same buying rights as Maltese nationals, without the need to obtain an AIP permit (Acquisition of Immovable Property). Due to their central locations, convenient facilities and advantageous buying rights, SDA Developments continue to be one of the most valuable and sought-after investment opportunities in Malta.

EUROPEAN CITIZENSHIP AND RESIDENCY

Whilst the low taxation rates for non-residents are a valuable incentive when considering which foreign country to invest in, Malta has also positioned itself as offering attractive European Citizenship and Residency schemes for high net-worth investors within a safe and stable Eurozone location.

If you are considering investing in property in Malta or would like more information, get in touch with us to discuss your investment objectives and we can help you identify fantastic opportunities to grow your property portfolio. A guide to buying your new home in Malta and Gozo

The Property

Ladder

Further to having passed the first time buyer stage, you may start looking towards moving up the property ladder in Malta. This brings with it a number of challenges. If you want to either move to a larger or smaller property (depending on your family or lifestyle situation), you may want to sell your previous home in order to finance the new one. If you are a buyer wanting to expand your property portfolio we can assist with providing a service tailored to your specific needs and requirements. In an ideal world, these two processes would happen simultaneously to ensure a seamless transition.

This ideal scenario is not always the case for those doing this alone as it may be difficult to effectively balance your efforts in selling your property in Malta whilst also looking for a new one. That is why at Oyster Christie’s International Real Estate, we focus on hassle-free transactions and guarantee to take the stress out of your entire experience. We are fully able to sell your property in Malta whilst helping you find your new one – thus ensuring it as manageable as possible.

Buying property in Malta

Buy

To Let

Every single year, the rental accommodation situation keeps on improving due to the influx of expatriates and tourists choosing to reside and relocate to Malta and Gozo. The new luxury lifestyle development schemes (Special Designated Areas – SDAs) that are cropping up across the islands have proven to be crucial towards the success of the buy-to-let market, removing some of the risk factors associated with this property investment. We have close ties and relationships with Malta’s leading property development companies, ensuring we’re a step ahead of other agencies. We are the first to know what’s new and ‘hot’ on the market.

As an income investment, buy-to-let in Malta is an appealing option, especially when compared to volatile stock markets and low saving rates. Meanwhile, the property value in Malta and demand for rental properties have continued to increase.

Oyster Christie’s International Real Estate will ensure your investment is a sound one if you are considering the buy-to-let property market in Malta. We share our expertise to guide you toward maximising your investment.

INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS

For Your Island Home

Life on an island is a cathartic experience. Much of the island lifestyle is focused on a rich connection to the beauty of the land. Whether you are living oceanfront in Mahé or tucked away on a rolling estate in the Bahamas, island living offers the ultimate sense of peace and luxury living.

As such, island homes are often designed to reflect this unique lifestyle. They are crafted to make the most of the natural landscape while offering the best of modern amenities. Many of these homes take a careful approach to the use of indoor and outdoor space to create a design that exists harmoniously with the island’s natural beauty.

For those who recently purchased an island home or are simply looking to give their existing home a quick interior update that helps reflect this desire for a connection to the land, this is the guide for you. Check out our top interior design tips for your island home.

CHOOSING YOUR ROOM STYLE

One of the wonderful things about owning an island home is that you can design the property to match your own personal taste and style. For this reason, when considering an upgrade to your island home’s interior, take the time to think about what style will best reflect your personal wishes.

The goal is to hone in on what room style is a good fit for your taste while working with the landscape of your property. By understanding what room style you prefer, you can ensure that every upgraded component from wallpaper to furniture will meld with this overarching theme.

Need some inspiration? Consider the following popular interior design styles.

Oyster Christie’s International Real Estate | Malta 51

MODERN MINIMALISM

Look at island properties around the globe, and you’ll see a common design theme emerge — the modern minimalism style. This style of interior focuses on less being more. Clean lines, open spaces and an uncluttered appearance all create a home that focuses on the beauty of the island and on using minimal design to capture the eye. Many of these homes feature earth tones and muted colors. They tend to incorporate stark contrasts in materials and revolve around an open floor plan.

What the experts say...

Interior designer Sandy Bonnici suggests it might be worth hiring a professionally trained designer to get the job done. The right person can help you identify what you are looking for and create a set of plans and work drawings that will ultimately result in a smoother work process.

Here are some valuable tips to consider.

Where to look

Ask your local friends or real estate agents for leads. Ideally, use someone local as they will have trade contacts. Try to get a good feel for the projects they have done via their social media accounts. Most interior designers can work with a broad range of styles and budgets, but you can tell whether designers are comfortable and experienced with your style by browsing their portfolios.

What to Consider

The level of detail for every project may vary, so it is good to establish this from the start. Some designers may offer turnkey services or project management, taking the pressure of the work out of clients’ hands. You will also want to understand the workflow: the meeting schedule, design approval, products used, and the expected timeline.

The aim is to find someone that relates to your style and whom you may find pleasurable to work with for the duration of your project.

Communicating with your designer

Discuss the best way to reach your designer for questions between regularly scheduled updates. Your interior designer wants you to be excited and satisfied with your space.

DESIGN TIPS

RUSTIC

Often paired with large estates and Spanish- or Mediterranean-style architecture, a rustic home interior is focused on using earthy elements to create a warm, inviting style. These homes often feature the use of woods, stones and other organic materials. Rather than creating precise lines, rustic styles opt for the rugged beauty of items in their natural state. These are a great choice for island homes that want to implement the organic feel of island living. They are all about the invitation for family and friends to linger longer and to feel cosy.

54
“Create a home that focuses on the beauty of the island and uses minimal design to capture the eye.”

ECLECTIC

Mixing and matching patterns, borrowing from different historical eras and somehow pulling this off without overwhelming the senses is core to an eclectic interior design. This design style is a popular choice for island homes, particularly those that feature British West Indies architecture. This style allows homeowners to curate their own rich blend of elements from around the globe, creating an entirely unique and appealing home. Imagine oriental rugs paired with a 1920s record player and a backsplash of modern tile.

Oyster Christie’s International Real Estate | Malta 55

SOURCING PREMIER FURNITURE

Once you have decided on what style of interior design is the ideal pick for your island home, your next focus should be on sourcing the right furniture to match this design. Furniture can make or break your home’s style, and the wrong piece can contrast sharply against an updated interior design.

When looking for furniture, consider not only the placement of the piece in your home but also what type of materials it features and how that will blend into your home’s style.

A lot of island furniture focuses on natural elements, helping to lend an airy feel to open spaces. When possible, work with a local artisan to source your furniture. This will allow you to further implement local materials, creating a one-of-a-kind feel for your home and pulling in the elements of the island.

INTERIOR

IMPLEMENTING COMPLEMENTARY DECOR

Adding the right decor to match your new interior design is one of the best parts of the process. You can either work with your interior designer to procure these items, or you can take to the island’s markets yourself to look for one-of-a-kind buys.

The goal is to add just the right amount of decor to pull the style together. In the case of a modern design, you’ll want to stick to only a few main focal points, reducing the amount of clutter on walls and shelving. For rustic and eclectic homes, the goal will be to layer in elements, offering a warm and cosy appeal to each room. Gain inspiration with a visit to your local boutiques and design shops.

Oyster Christie’s International Real Estate | Malta 56

BLENDING YOUR INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SPACE

Make the most of life on an island by bringing your indoor and outdoor spaces together. Rather than simply focusing on your interior design as a standalone subject, look for ways to naturally meld your indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Line walkways with plants and build living walls inside your home. Use interior courtyards to draw the style of your home into the outdoors.

The goal is to seamlessly blend your home’s elements. As you journey between the outdoors and your home’s interior, you should feel a natural connection between the two. If minimalism is central to your interior theme, make it central to your outdoor living space as well. If you have focused on Spanish tile and rustic walkways outside, draw these elements into your home’s kitchen, living room and bedrooms.

Island living is, after all, centred around life spent embracing the outdoors. It is only natural, therefore, to create design elements that guide you to nature and that showcase the splendour of the area’s landscape via your home.

ISLAND LIVING: YOUR GUIDE TO

HOME

BUILDING

Oyster Christie’s International Real Estate | Malta 60

The slow sway of palm trees in the ocean breeze. The beauty of the sun setting over the waters. The rhythmic sound of the waves lapping on the shoreline, and the unhurried pace of locals as they go about their day. These are just a few of the many reasons that discerning buyers opt to purchase an island property for their next home. Island living offers an incredible array of benefits. Easy access to stunning ocean waters, peace and tranquillity not found on most country’s mainlands and rich cultures — island lifestyle seems to have it all.

Whether you plan to relocate to Martinique or you’re investing in a second home in Bora Bora, when building a home on an island, there are considerations you’ll need to take into account that are unique to constructing this style of home. Take a look at your guide to home building and architecture for island properties.

AND ARCHITECTURE

Oyster Christie’s International Real Estate | Malta 61

CHOOSING A PROPERTY

When you build a new home, you have the opportunity to design the house exactly the way you want. You are not constricted by existing structural elements or limited by the home’s layout. There is, in fact, only one thing that could hold back your dream home’s construction — the property you purchase.

For this reason, one of the most critical steps in ensuring that your island vision comes to fruition is to choose the right piece of land. The property you buy will dictate a lot about the size of your home, the style of the structure and may even include islandspecific regulations and requirements for the build.

Not only that, but while you can change a lot about the design of your home, you can’t change anything about the location of your property. Will you choose a pied dans l’eau property with views of the sea? Or will you opt for a property in the centre of the island’s bustling town? There is no right or wrong choice, but be sure you are confident in your priorities before signing on the dotted line.

DESIGNING TO COMPLEMENT YOUR ISLAND HOME

When building an island home, you have a unique chance to design a space that is reflective of the natural beauty of the landscape that appealed to you in the first place. Some of the most stunning island properties are those that have been carefully constructed to complement the allure of the island.

This can be done in numerous ways. For starters, consider what materials are native to the island. Incorporating local wood, stone and notable elements of the landscape can help create a home that lives in harmony with the land.

Additionally, make sure that your design showcases and highlights the best of the property’s natural landscape. If you’re oceanfront, this might mean implementing large floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the water. If you’re in town, this might mean mimicking the open courtyard styles of the area, highlighting an indoor-outdoor lifestyle. For a countryside property, this could include landscaping stunning gardens replete with local plants and flowers.

The goal is to create a home that reflects the best of the island, while incorporating all the luxury amenities you desire.

what the experts say...

I cannot stress the word ‘planning’ enough!

Planning will create the strong foundations required for complex jobs such as renovating.

Hiring an interior designer to create technical plans and visuals will help save you time and money, as well as making sure you can enjoy the journey of remodelling your space.

With the correct space planning you will be able to make the most of your property, whilst the relevant technical drawings will allow your contractors to work as efficiently as possible.

Another thing to always consider is your budget. We must be realistic and make sure that the ideas and plans we make for our renovations are within our means. This may be finding the balance between functionality, practicality and aesthetics, as well as compromising on some of our ideas and being logical about others.

One last thing to think about when renovating your property is always adding contingency. Whether this is from a financial perspective, or time frame, always consider that the project will likely not always be smooth sailing, and going through hurdles is part of the process. Alternative accommodation may also be a wise option, depending on the extent of the refurbishment, and this financial weight should also be included as part of the expenses.

POPULAR ISLAND LUXURY HOME STYLES

As you envision your new island home, it can be helpful to consider what architectural styles lend themselves best to island living. There are numerous choices for new builds, but the following are some of the top picks on islands around the globe.

MODERN MINIMALIST

The modern minimalist style of home is all about simplicity in both form and function. These homes feature clean lines, uncluttered layouts and uncomplicated finishes. Think open, light-filled spaces with simple detailing.

These are the opposite of the ornate Victorian homes of old. Instead, they focus on the careful use of materials that are visually enticing while keeping overdone decor to a minimum.

Why It’s Popular for an Island Home

The modern minimalist style of home is a great pick for island properties. The openness of the floor plans paired with the heavy focus on letting in light is an ideal complement to many sunny island climates. This provides homeowners the opportunity to turn their focus to the area’s natural beauty, rather than detracting through the use of too much design clutter.

HOME INNOVATIONS

COASTAL CONTEMPORARY

When you envision a beach house, one of the most common styles to come to mind is coastal contemporary. This style of home is focused on blending the contemporary comforts of a modern-day home with the open-air ideology of beach living. These homes often feature floor-to-ceiling windows, large open rooms and Craftsman-style fronts.

Why it’s Popular for an Island Home

With coastal in its name, it is easy to see why this architectural style is the ideal match for an island build. YOUR GUIDE TO ISLAND-FRIENDLY OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES AND LANDSCAPING

You open up your bedroom doors and step out onto your balcony, breathing in the warm, languid island air. As the waters of the ocean crash on the beach, you are lulled into a state of peace. This is, after all, one of the huge appeals of island living — a deep, rich connection to the natural elements that make islands incredibly alluring.

For those who purchase an island home, whether that be on a rolling estate on the British Virgin Islands or on the rugged shores of Maui, focusing

on outdoor living is central to the enjoyment of the lifestyle. And, what better way to spend more time outdoors than in your very own upgraded outdoor living space complete with stunning landscaping.

In this guide, we’ll talk about how you can make the most of any outdoor living space your island home features, with specific tips around turning this home into your own island oasis.

Living:

BASK IN THE SUN

The bright rays of the island sun — there is something magical about basking in this light. The splendid number of sunny days that many islands see is precisely what draws in the crowds. People flock to the beaches to lie in the warm sun, soaking in a boost of Vitamin D.

For those who own an island property, nothing makes your outdoor living space more inviting than ample decking with room for sunbathing and relaxation.

If your home doesn’t already feature an outdoor patio with raised decking, consider this investment. Make sure to create ample room for comfortable outdoor furniture and lots of space for laying out in the sun. If you have views of the ocean, consider an elevated deck that overlooks the waters.

MAKE A SPLASH

After soaking in the sun, nothing complements the experience better than a dip in your own swimming pool. This is often one of the first upgrades homeowners wish to make after purchasing an island home. While the ocean’s waters are soothing in their own right, there is something exceptional about having an on-property pool.

Not only are pools the perfect place to relax after a long day or to entertain family and friends, but they double as an excellent source of exercise. Consider designing a pool area to allow you to start each day by swimming laps.

Want to turn your pool into the ultimate spa? Implement a jacuzzi tub and sauna as well. You’ll never want to leave the comforts of your own home with your ultimate water setup.

ADD IN ACTIVITIES

If your property has the space, add in an area of activities. Popular choices include tennis courts, pickleball courts, horseshoe pits and bocce ball lawns. Having these amenities on-site will allow you to spend more time outdoors while engaging in the activities you love the most.

Not only that, but they are the perfect choice for those who love to entertain. Invite over your friends for a competitive tennis match or gather with family over a relaxing game of horseshoes.

FIT FOR ENTERTAINMENT

Speaking of entertaining, take your outdoor living space to the next level by focusing on the amenities that will make it more enjoyable to spend time together under the island skies.

A great place to begin is by designing the ultimate outdoor kitchen. Far more than just a grill on your patio, you can create a kitchen that features a built-in barbeque or an outdoor oven and stove or even customise the space with a brick oven. There is no limit to what you can add to your outdoor kitchen, creating ample room for cooking and cleanup.

Additionally, consider installing an outdoor fridge or cooler for drinks. Want to go even further? Build a tiki bar or outdoor draft wall to impress your guests with on-tap beverages.

Rounding out your outdoor living space, install a dedicated outdoor dining space. Large, rustic wooden tables with comfortable seating will invite guests to linger longer over a glass of wine as you create memories to last a lifetime.

LANDSCAPE FOR YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Finally, complete your outdoor living space with upgraded landscaping. One of the best ways to make the most of your property’s natural appeal is to work with the island’s wild side. Rather than growing standard grass lawns, consider implementing native plants from the area. These plants will not only flourish in their natural environment, but they will reduce the amount you need to spend on upkeep.

When choosing what plants to add to your home’s property, focus on flowering and colorful choices that will reflect the elements of the island. Through the use of a blend of native plants, trees and ornamentals, you can create a lively and enticing landscape that showcases what makes the island unique.

Additionally, you can turn your property into a soothing oasis by installing walkways that draw you through the landscape. Water features, such as natural ponds and spilling fountains can further add to the ambiance of the property.

For the health-conscious, planting a garden filled with local herbs, spices and produce is another excellent choice. Tending to this garden is a peaceful and centring outdoor activity that results in a robust harvest of fresh ingredients. Wow your guests with a fresh basil and tomato salad as they dine in your newly updated outdoor living space.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO OUTDOOR LIVING

Life on an island is all about blending the beauty of the outdoors into daily activity. By creating an inviting outdoor living space complete with a stunning array of plantlife, you can take a holistic approach to island living. Whether you prefer to relax poolside, or you are passionate about growing a vegetable garden, reconnecting with the natural beauty of the area daily will continually remind you of why you first fell in love with your island home. And sharing this experience with friends and family will afford you the chance to share this understanding with others — a gift that keeps on giving.

Malta, Gozo, Comino:

Art,

Culture &More

76

If you’re just settling down in the Maltese islands, you’re likely looking forward to enjoying the pristine beaches and glistening ocean water. Malta, Gozo and Comino certainly have their fair share of stunning beaches to explore, but they also boast an abundance of historical sites, museums, restaurants and other attractions that will give you a glimpse into their cultures and past. Each island has something different to offer visitors and locals alike. Here’s your guide to exploring the best of each of them.

Malta

Malta is a hot spot for those who want to get away from busy urban cities and soak up the brilliance of island life. Malta has the archipelago’s main airport, so you typically have to land on Malta before you can visit or settle down in any of the neighbouring islands.

THINGS TO DO IN MALTA

While the island is rich with fascinating sites that are steeped in history, there is plenty to see if history isn’t your thing. You can appreciate the natural wonders of Malta, like the mystical Blue Grotto, a funky rock called Ġgantija or the Dinglu Cliffs.

But sightseeing isn’t the only thing to do in Malta. The food takes inspiration from Sicilian and North African cuisine, with an emphasis on fresh seafood like mussels and fish. And the wine on this island is distinct and special, so if you’re a vino-lover, get ready for some brilliant and vivid flavours.

CULTURE AND ART IN MALTA

Although Malta is most well-known for its beaches, residents enjoy an island also rich in culture and art. You can visit one of the many museums, some of which hold ancient sculptures and tapestries.

If you’re a major history buff and visiting a few historical sites is not enough to quench your thirst for knowledge, we recommend visiting the fascinating Malta history museums. You can learn about how Malta thwarted Napoleon, the Great Siege of Malta and the mysteries found in ancient tombs. You can even stand in genuine war rooms where drastic decisions were made.

Maltese art can be eerie and emotional, with depictions of women and children in every state, from bliss to agony. Photographers and painters have also long been inspired by the island’s beautiful natural landscape. Whatever you choose to see, Maltese art offers a miraculously cathartic experience. Pieces by well-known and smaller local artists can be found in the many galleries and exhibitions across the island.

Gozo

Gozo is one of the hidden gems of Malta. It’s a stunning island known for its extraordinary art and ancient temples. You cannot fly directly to the island, but you can easily get there by boat, usually a large ferry, from the main island of Malta. If you make your way there, you’re in for a dazzling concoction of sunshine, art and ancient wonders.

THINGS TO DO IN GOZO

The Mediterranean waters here are a vibrant blue colour that feels surreal. So swimming, boating and snorkelling are always popular activities for tourists and locals alike.

Beyond the stunning beaches, some of the most interesting places to sightsee are the Gozo salt pans, Ramla beach, one of the many sea dive sites, and natural wonders like the Azure Window, a collapsed natural arch.

The island has a beautiful and dramatic energy, so every beach you visit or rock you see will seem unique and sensational compared to other places.

CULTURE AND ART IN GOZO

Like Malta, Gozo is teeming with captivating history and amazing historical sites. One of the most popular Gozo excursions is the wondrous ancient temple. You can walk through the ancient ruins, which are still mostly intact.

There are also contemporary Gozitan artists and annual carnivals and festivals here that are thrilling and unforgettable. Check out the newest artists at the local museums, where you can admire Gozitan paintings, sculptures, photography and graphic designs.

You can attend fashion shows, where independent Gozitan designers showcase their latest threads. And if you see anything you like, the luxury boutiques in Gozo are a major part of their culture, and you’d be remiss not to visit one of these stores before you leave.

Comino

Comino is one of the smaller islands in the Maltese archipelago you can access by boat, so it’s also a hidden treasure that many tourists don’t know about. It offers luxurious peace and quiet that many of the busier islands do not. It’s best known for its mystical lagoons and extensive cave systems. If you visit Comino, which is between Gozo and Malta, you’ll feel like you’re being welcomed into heaven.

THINGS TO DO IN COMINO

Comino is one of the best islands for scuba diving and snorkelling. The water is crystal clear, and the marine life is mesmerizing and unique. You can swim in the heavenly blue lagoons or go on an adventure by diving into the complex and beautiful cave systems.

Perhaps the most sensational aspect of Comino is the nature and wildlife on this island. It is a designated nature reserve and bird sanctuary, so come here for some excellent bird and wildlife watching.

SIGHTSEEING IN COMINO

Comino is almost completely uninhabited, so it is a destination better suited to a day spent swimming and sunbathing than one spent shopping and dining. If you would like to explore the island beyond the beaches, there are several interesting buildings to visit. These include St. Mary’s Tower, Comino Battery, and an abandoned hospital. Each offers a glimpse into Malta’s fascinating history.

APPRECIATING THE MALTESE ISLANDS

We know how enticing the soft-sand beaches and the sparkling blue waters are, but the Maltese islands have more to offer than just peaceful beach days. From ancient ruins to contemporary couture to inspirational architecture, the islands have plenty to offer locals and visitors alike, and we don’t want you to miss out on an ounce of it. Immerse yourself in the vibrant cultures of these exquisite islands to get the most out of your new Mediterranean lifestyle.

DISCOVERING MALTA’S HISTORY

Through the Islands’ Unforgettable Historical Sites

This tiny island nation has been inhabited as far back as the Neolithic period, around 5900 B.C. Over those millennia, many cultures have come and gone, each leaving their mark and making this land of “Strength and Persistence” — the country’s official motto — a unique place in Europe, if not the world.

Many aspects of Malta draw people to its modest spot in the Mediterranean. Warm waters beckon at beaches like Golden Bay, Xlendi, and Sliema. Scuba diving destinations are considered to be the best in Europe. Boat tours offer relaxing views and lazy days. Shopping for local wares is

fun and offers discovery. And the foodie scene here has exploded, with more and more Michelin ratings awarded in every corner of the islands. But perhaps the most alluring aspect is the history on display.

A simple walk through any corner of Malta is sure to be steeped in history. From the aforementioned Neolithic period to the modern day, a multitude of cultural influences has shaped the architecture and left many an ancient edifice, from megalithic structures to sprawling cathedrals standing for all to see and explore.

A STORIED LAND

Seafaring Phoenicians colonized the islands in 800 B.C., bringing Semitic culture and language, later becoming Carthaginians who would rule for almost another 1,000 years. The Roman Empire would take over in 216 A.D. until their grip loosened in the 4th century, leaving Malta under the auspices of the Byzantines. By the late 800s, Arabic conquest came to these shores along with much of Southern Europe. By 1091, the Norman conquest changed the game again, bringing Christianity back as the main religion by the end of the 13th century.

But that wasn’t enough cultural turnover for Malta! The Kingdom of Sicily would have a turn at rule over the island, with Spain following soon after by 1530. Even the French got in on occupying the archipelago, albeit briefly, under the ambitious Emperor Napoleon. Malta asked Great Britain for help, and the French were quickly ousted, starting a long and close relationship with England — so much so that the Maltese solicited entry into the British Empire but was relegated to colonial status in 1814. By 1964, Malta became an independent state and, by 1979, separated itself from Britain formally.

That’s a lot of history packed into a small space! One result of Malta’s history is the unique language based on ancient Arabic which was later Latinized to become something not quite of either. You will see this rich cultural diversity reflected further in the historical sites in Malta. Here’s a quick guide to the places to check out!

ĠGANTIJA TEMPLES

Let us start back at the beginning — at least as far as we know. The first of many UNESCO sites on Malta, the Ġgantija Temples are a megalithic compound on the island of Gozo. Built before the invention of the wheel, these structures came into being over 5,000 years ago, making them more ancient than Stonehenge and even the Pyramids of Giza. Researchers reveal them to be the site of fertility ritual ceremonies as defined by a long-lost religion. Today, you can wander through this esoteric and unparalleled bit of history excavated in the 19th century.

GgantijaTemples

Oyster Christie’s International Real Estate | Malta 83

MNAJDRA

Another megalithic temple from the same time frame as Ġgantija, the Mnajdra complex is a stunning example of design dating back over five millennia. Situated along the coastline, researchers have shown a different purpose for this one. Discovered to be astronomically aligned, the site was likely set up for observation of the cosmos, making it among the oldest observatories in the world. Carved from coralline limestone, its remarkable craftsmanship will fill your eyes with wonder.

ĦAĠAR QIM

Found within a short walk from Mnajdra, Ħaġar Qim is the last of the major sites from the Ġgantija period. Also dating back around 5,000 years ago, this megalithic temple complex boasts a trilithon entrance reminiscent of the piled carvings at Stonehenge. While nobody knows for sure what the temple was used for, there is evidence of everything from fertility ceremonies to soothsaying by oracles. Whatever its use, you will feel a mystical atmosphere as you enter and explore this remarkable place.

GRANDMASTERS PALACE

Jumping ahead a few millennia, we turn our attention to several structures created when Malta was under the rule of the Knights Hospitaller of St John. This ancient military order was awarded providence by the Spanish and remained for two centuries, deeply influencing the islands. In 1571, the splendorous Grandmasters Palace was built as the home base of the order. Visitors nowadays can enjoy the lavish interior decorations, incredible art collection, stunning architecture and even an armoury.

ST JOHN’S CO-CATHEDRAL

Possibly the most beautiful historical site in Malta, St John’s CoCathedral is a sort of pinnacle to the legacy of the Knights Hospitaller. As the capital city of Valletta’s crown jewel, the grand cathedral’s Mannerist exterior is beautifully complemented with a Baroque interior fashioned extravagantly with gold leaf, paintings depicting the life of John the Baptist and eye-popping carvings. For both the faithful and the curious, it is a wondrous experience to stand within.

St Paul’s Catacombs

ST PAUL’S CATACOMBS

While one could wander Valletta and encounter more historical sites looming before them than we could count, over in Rabat, some of the history happens underground. The mysterious St. Paul’s Catacombs burrow beneath the earth, allowing visitors to penetrate its murky secrets. This series of subterranean passages came about during the Roman period as part of a network of tombs. Entering these tunnels, one may be surprised to see Christian, Muslim, Jewish and even Pagan burials laid peacefully to rest side by side. It’s another testament to Malta’s embrace of its diverse legacy.
