From humble beginnings it has grown into an O rg a n i z at i o n t h at changes lives, families and communities in N i c a ra g u a e ve r y day. O ur N icaragua Foundation is compr ised of ove r 8 0 m e d i c a l and civil volunteers who wor k year around to g u a ra nte e t h e b est treatment for children bor n with clef t lips a n d p a l ate s. Th e se volunteers are the hear t of our organization. Al l o f o u r l o c a l m edical volunteers including surgeons, anesthe s i o l o gi s t s, n u r s e s, dentists and tech volunteers are accredited a cco rd i n g to t h e Global Standards set up by Operation Smile I nte r n at i o n a l. Th is means that a child operated for a clef t lip or p a l ate i n N i c a ra gua receives the same qualit y treatment with t h e s a m e q u a l i t y medical staff and with the same qualit y medi c at i o n s a n d e q u i pment that they would any where else in the wo r l d. We a re t he only organization in N icaragua wor k ing to t h e s e s t a n d a rd s. Providing better
care i n a National Referral Center Operation Smiles N icaragua will celebrate its 20th Anniversar y by Creating a National Referral Center for clef t lip, clef t palate and other facial deformities. This center will not only change lives but it will help to transform the National Heath Care System in N icaragua. The N icaraguan M inistr y of Health has signed on to par tner with Operation Smile in Reaching N icaragua’s most needy and marginalized patients. Through their net work of public hospitals and health centers we will be able to ex tend our reach and find children that are falling through the cracks of N icaragua’s overburdened Health Care System. Through this alliance and with a physical center in Managua we will be able to treat greater numbers of children. Our center combined with this par tnership will also insure that we reach our patients at a younger age. The ideal is what we see clef t lip patients shor tly af ter bir th in order to commence treatment early and prepare these patients for surger y. Our dental volunteers in teams with our surgeons and pediatricians will work together to create treatment protocols in order to insure great surgical results when the time is right. Each patients, at Operation Smile N icaragua, will have a team of doc tors work ing with them until they are ready to face the world. Our National Referral Center will also be the site of the first ever speech therapy program in N icaragua. We have created a par tnership with NOVA Universit y in the United States and local universities to star training N icaraguan psychology majors to work in speech therapy. We will also have ongoing SKYPE speech therapy sessions provided by Nova and ongoing training and seminars with Operation Smile I nternational. This program will be transformational for our patients. Speech Therapy helps us to insure our patients have access to education, jobs and a produc tive life. Finally, our care center will help us to create a larger and better prepared volunteer base. We have set aside areas for volunteer development and ongoing education, are credentialed and armed with the best techniques and prac tices for clef t lip and palate treatment. We will continue to provide the best results in N icaragua with our dedicated, educated and determined team of local volunteers.
