Thank You for Supporting the South Eyre Sunflowers 2025 Season!
Visitors came from near and far to visit South Eyre Sunflowers this season.
Through this support the sunflowers raised an incredible $36,350.00. The amount will be split between a number of organisations, for both mental health and the Oxford community.
As in previous years half of the amount raised ($18,175.00) will go to Gumboot Friday and I Am Hope. This generous contribution will fund 129 free counselling sessions. A special moment of the season for Kerry was having Mike King visit in person to see the sunflowers and thank the team personally.
The other $18,175 will stay in the Oxford Community, firstly with a donation going to a special little warrior in the area.
Three-year-old Lilith, (pictured below right) is bravely battling a stage four Wilms tumor, a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer, and her mother, Grace, will receive a donation of $7,970. This amount will help support the family’s medical expenses as well as contribute to building a tiny home for them to call their own. The QR code to contribute to their Givealittle is below.
In addition to the donation for Grace and Lilith, several local organisations in the Oxford community will benefit. The Oxford Area School Ag Club, Oxford St John, Oxford Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Oxford Community Trust will each receive a contribution of $2,041. Another $2,041 will stay in the account to cover costs for the next sunflower season, ensuring that the legacy of the sunflowers continues to thrive in the years to come.
Kerry and the team would like to extend their thanks to everyone who helped to make this season happen, and also to everyone who visited the sunflower fields, shared their memories, and treated the farm and property with such respect and kindness.
The Sunflowers will be back next season and Kerry says there will be some exciting changes so follow along on Facebook to keep updated.

Oxford Community Health Centre to Expand with New Facility
The Oxford Community Health Centre is thrilled to announce that we are now actively working towards a much needed rebuild.
As many of you are aware, we have outgrown our current facility and this announcement marks an exciting milestone for our community, ensuring that we continue to deliver high-quality healthcare services in a modern, purpose-built environment.
Oxford Community Health Chair Mark Brown states that as a rural health provider, our mission is to deliver equitable healthcare access to all. The new facility will not only accommodate our growing general practice services but will also provide dedicated spaces for essential allied health services, such as physiotherapy, midwifery, counselling, and mental health support.
This expansion will enable us to meet the increasing healthcare needs of our community and provide comprehensive, accessible care close to home.
We anticipate that the project will take approximately 18 to 24 months to complete. In the meantime, we acknowledge that our current premises are feeling increasingly cramped, and we sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding of our patients and staff as we work through this transition.
We apologize for any inconvenience and assure you that we are committed to maintaining our high standards of care throughout this process.
Brown said that the current building is situated on land owned by the Waimakariri District Council, and we are actively exploring all options for a suitable site for the new facility.
We are working closely with several real estate agents to secure a location that will best serve the needs of our growing community.
This expansion is an exciting step forward for Oxford and the surrounding areas, and we look forward to keeping our community informed as we progress with this vital project.
For further updates, please follow our Facebook page.

Panochron Model Call: Be Part of a Timeless Legacy
Panochron, the ambitious photographic project capturing the evolution of individuals over time, is opening its doors once again for a new round of participants.
On April 16th, the Oxford Gallery will host an exclusive model call, inviting people to become part of this living archive of personal and cultural history.
A unique blend of panoramic portraiture and storytelling, Panochron offers participants the opportunity to be documented in an ongoing series of portraits taken every five years.
Through this approach, the project builds a visual and narrative tapestry of human experience, illustrating how we grow, change, and remain the same through the passage of time.
The upcoming model call is an open invitation to individuals from all walks of life who want to take part in something bigger than themselves.
Whether you are returning to continue your journey or joining for the first time, this is your chance to be immortalized in a body of work that is as much about personal transformation as it is about collective history.
Taking place in the Oxford Gallery, the event promises to be an engaging experience where interested participants can meet the project’s creator, learn more about the process, and take their first step toward becoming part of this extraordinary endeavor.
Don’t miss this opportunity to contribute to a project that will endure for generations.
Mark your calendar for April 16th and take your place in the evolving story of Panochron.

Recipe of the month.
with Louize Juniper
BLACKBERRY CHEESECAKE BROWNIE
This recipe is good for all berries, fresh or frozen, and also with stone fruit.
I used a 24cm square brownie tin.
Ingredients
¾ cup melted butter
1 & 1/2 cups granulated sugar
3 eggs
Splash vanilla extract
½ cup dutch cocoa powder
¾ cup plain flour
¼ tsp baking powder
300g cream cheese
¼ cup granulated sugar
1 egg
Splash vanilla extract
¼ cup berry jam (I used blackberry)
1 cup blackberries fresh or frozen
Method
• Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 24cm square tin with baking parchment paper.
• In a medium mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, 1 cup of sugar, eggs, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Stir until well blended.
• Add the cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder to the wet mixture. Stir until just combined, being careful not to over mix.
• Pour the brownie batter into the prepared tin, spreading it out evenly.
• In another mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, 1/4 cup of sugar, egg, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
• Spoon the cheesecake mixture over the brownie batter in dollops, then use a spatula to gently swirl the two together.
• Warm the blackberry preserves slightly in the microwave, then drizzle it over the cheesecake layer. Use the knife to swirl the pre serves into the batter, creating a marbled effect.
• Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out with just a few moist crumbs. Allow the brownies to cool in the pan before cutting into squares. Best refrigerated overnight.
• Serve with ice cream, custard or crème fraiche.
• Garnish with fresh blackberries if desired. Enjoy!

Work is planned to trial a modified joint design on the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge.
The bridge was closed in early 2024 to replace the deck and chipseal the bridge. Since then, there has been some deterioration of the road seal, particularly around the joints between the panels.
The bridge was built for road and rail and opened in 1877 so it’s natural that there has been some ground and structural movement during this time. And it’s this movement that’s the primary cause of seal damage along the deck joints.
Flex in a structure of this age is expected, and the bridge remains safe to use.
Selwyn and Waimakariri councils will be trialling new moveable joints aiming to alleviate the chip loss at the joints.
The trial will initially focus on 5 deck panels and joins.
The trial will be monitored over winter and spring, with a decision to extend this along the bridge to be made in spring.
Te Kura o Te Poho Rakahua Oxford Area School
Rau Whetu - Shine together
It has been a month of celebrating our student's success.
We are all very proud of our Dragon Boat team for their success in last month's New Zealand Secondary Schools' National Mixed Dragon Boat Champs! This group of 22 paddlers should be extremely proud of their achievement on a national level.
Huge thanks to Megan Lowen for her management of the team, Mike Robinson for all the hours invested in coaching this team, and the amazing parents and caregivers for supporting them to get to Wellington to compete. There were a lot of sponsors who financially supported the team - their financial support was greatly appreciated.
Congratulations also to Diaz Cameron (Year 11) who came 5th in the Under 16 grade at the New Zealand Squash Championships. A tremendous result!
I can continue in this vein by congratulating Gus Johnstone (Year 11), who secured third place at the National Clubs Athletics Championships held in Dunedin last month. Gus also competed at the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Athletics Championships and along with Matilda Hart, qualified for the South Island Secondary Schools' Championship in April.
Gus's jump of 11.61m in the Under 16 Triple Jump earned him the bronze medal and a podium finish at a national event.
We look forward to hearing how you both go.
'FOLIO' The Oxford Gallery Exhibition of Student Excellence in Art
'Folio' begins on the 13th of March and runs until the 20th of April. NCEA Art students of 2024 have done it again! The work they have created is both creative and thought-provoking. The exhibition is a celebration of the effort and time the students put into their external exam to gain Excellence, in the form of a 2 or 3 panel folio. Show your support for our hard-working students by going along to the Oxford Gallery on Main Street, during their open hours from Thu-Sun 11am-4pm.
The Oxford Gallery is run by volunteers and we thank them for their work in producing this student exhibition, on an annual basis.
Dragon Boating
Last month our Dragon Boating team travelled to Wellington to compete in our first-ever National race regatta. The Team emerged victorious, securing the Mixed Team National Youth Title!
A team of 22 students paddled a 300m distance completing 3 heats easily and then finishing a tight final against four Wellington teams. These students were accompanied by coach Mike Robinson, managed by Megan Lowen and supported by Julie Robinson and dedicated parents Chace Wratt, Sarah-Jane Eder, Leela Birch, Lisa Bushrod, Anita Stubbs, Lisa and Darren Watson.
Our incredible paddlers represented us with determination and incredible teamwork. Several other parents also flew in to cheer on the team, making the event even more special.
This amazing achievement is a testament to the hard work, passion, and unwavering support from our entire community.
A special thank you to the Oxford Area School PTA for funding our paddles, Fresh Choice for supporting us through the Community Shout program & bake-off competition.
Tineka Johnstone for her hard work running the fundraising team and getting the incredible hoodies that kept us warm in the windy Wellington weather.
Congratulations to everyone involved!
Netball Fundraiser - Sheep manure
Oxford Area School netball girls are fundraising again to support their South Island Secondary Schools' netball tournament in 2025.
The girls are back under the shearing shed to dig out the sheep manure that they are bagging and selling. This is a lot of hard work but also a great team-building experience!
The Senior SISS team is headed to Dunedin in August and the Junior SISS team will compete in Christchurch during the July holidays.
If you would like to support please contact Lesley Inch 027 4946070. $12 per bag or 5 bags for $50.
The Canterbury Secondary School Athletics Championship kicked off last month under some tough conditions as the weather was cold, wet, and strong winds that tested the endurance and determination of all athletes. At the prelims, competitors had to fight through the rain-soaked track and blustery conditions just to secure their spots in the finals which were held on the 21st March at Nga Puna Wai Sports Centre.
And what a contrast Friday turned out to be! The sun was out, and the championships concluded under perfect blue skies and warm conditions, perfect conditions for athletes to give their best and showcase their skills at the Finals.
We would like to congratulate all the students who made it to the finals and, in particular, to Matilda Hart and Gus Johnstone, who have qualified for the next round, to the South Island Secondary School Athletics Championship in Nelson, taking place on April 4th - 6th.
Matilda Hart
Girls Triple Jump Under 14 Finals - 1st - 9.86m - SISS Qualifier & OAS School Record
Girls 200 Meter Dash Under 14 Finals - 6th / 28.82- SISS Qualifier & OAS School Record 28.67s in preliminaries
Girls Long Jump Under 14 Finals - 6th - 4.45m - SISS potential qualifier, met qualifying distance
Gus Johnstone
Boys Triple Jump Under 15 Finals - 2nd - 11.08m - SISS Qualifier
This is a fantastic achievement, and we wish them all the best as they take on the next level of competition.
A special thank you to all the parents who supported the athletes throughout the event, especially Tineka and her husband, Tony, for their incredible help in transporting students and looking after them at the venue. Their support is invaluable, and we deeply appreciate their efforts.
We look forward to hearing the results from the South Island Championships

Are you ready for winter?
With autumn upon us it means winter is fast approaching - shorter days, cold weather and unfortunately, the cold and flu season.
A healthy immune system is the best defence against cough, cold and flu. So get yourself and your family prepared before the cold weather hits.
Keep up to date with your immunisations and boosters – including both Flu and Covid – especially if you are more at risk. For a lot of people both vaccinations are free, the criteria are available on the Pharmac website, or pop in and ask one of our friendly staff.
If you feel your immune system needs more of a ‘boost’ we are here to help with products formulated to support the body’s immune response, including Buccaline tablets. These can be used to boost your body’s natural immunity for up to three months and provide some protection against the bacterial complications of the flu or a cold. Buccaline is NOT a substitute for the flu vaccine but may be used as well as the flu vaccination.
Staying active, eating a balanced diet and ensuring your home is warm and dry, can all help keep you and your family well this winter.
Let’s all stay happy and healthy this winter!
Flu vaccinations available at Oxford Pharmacy – book on Book My Vaccine, phone us or just pop in!

Mayoral Update with Dan Gordon
I had a great day out at the Oxford A&P Show. I always love attending the shows in our District and this year’s Oxford Show was another great event and a special one. The show received Royal Event status awarded by the Royal Agricultural Society of NZ in the Equestrian, and Home Industries - GP Hall exhibits. I was there alongside members of the Oxford-Ohoka Community Board, my council colleagues and members of council staff to discuss the Annual Plan which is currently out for consultation. Congratulations to the entire show committee and especially this year’s president Jason Skurr.
It was also fantastic recently to speak at and officially open the new Sutton Tools factory in Southbrook. This is a business which has a wonderful history in our district and despite the huge success of the company, it still has a strong family owned and operated feel. After a devastating fire destroyed the premises in Kaiapoi the group could have easily decided to build elsewhere. That would have been a huge loss to our district.
As Mayor, I, alongside the Waimakariri District Council, and Deputy Mayor Neville worked closely with Peter and Robert Sutton and their team to ensure that Sutton Tools could rebuild and thrive right here in Waimakariri. Council staff also supported these efforts and played an important role in ensuring Sutton Tools remain as a valued local business.
Alongside my Waimakariri District Council colleagues, I had the pleasure of hosting an afternoon tea in honour of this year’s King’s New Years Honours recipients from the district and those who have had made a significant contribution to the district through their work.
As Mayor, it was an immensely proud moment to welcome these outstanding individuals, along with their close friends and families. Being recognised with a King’s New Year Honour is a truly significant achievement, and I felt it was important to honour them on behalf of the entire Waimakariri District. I also recently met with Hon. Simon Watts, Minister for Local Government, alongside my Canterbury Mayoral Forum colleagues. We updated the Minister on the Canterbury Councils’ progress in selecting preferred models for water service delivery under the government’s three waters reform - Local Water Done Well. The Minister emphasised that councils have full autonomy in choosing the model that best suits their communities. The government’s sole requirement is financial viability.
I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that you might want to discuss. Email me at dan.gordon@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021 906 437.
I’m here to help.
from the Presidents Desk with Oxford Club President Kyle Scott
, Hello there and welcome to the latest edition of From the President’s Desk.
Thank you to those of you who have supported the Oxford Club during our successful Membership cash draws.
At times when the winners of draws and other promotions are announced, a number of our valued female members have commented on the seemingly disproportionate number of male members who are winners in the Clubs’ promotions.
There is a simple explanation for this, as at present the Oxford Clubs total female membership is 34%. Traditionally Clubs and Working Mens Clubs were male dominated with the Oxford Club admitting full female members since 1982.
Today at the Oxford Club our female members bring different perspectives, talents and experiences and enrich our Club activities and events. We have a strong female membership through all our Sections with the Darts, Pool and Outdoor Bowls fielding some very successful teams. It is also very pleasing to see how our female membership helps the Club create a more family friendly atmosphere and environment.
At the Club we promote equal opportunities in leadership and decision making. Our Club Manager, Vice President, Treasurer are all accomplished women with valuable leadership skills and fresh ideas. We have a strong female presence on our Executive Committee, and we believe that having female members in our Club is essential for the Clubs growth, relevance and long-term success in today’s world.
At the Oxford Club we are always seeking to enhance our atmosphere and facilities for our members and guests. We think that we have created a more inclusive and welcoming environment, offering activities and events that appeal to a broader audience. Our current fundraising goal is to install a playground area to keep the kids entertained.
So, to all you girls in Oxford and the wider community, we would love to welcome you aboard as a member of the Oxford Club. We think that we have plenty to offer with great atmosphere and facilities, super events and entertainment, diverse Club sections and activities, food and drink options with lots of inclusive Club membership benefits.
As always thanks for reading my article and don’t forget to check our weekly email blast packed full of happenings and activities at our Club, The Oxford Club.
Look forward to seeing and chatting to you all at our Club very soon.
