Guardians of the Gorge: Ashley Gorge Volunteers Lead Local Pest Control Effort It’s a crisp, sunny morning as I meet Brian Pilbrow and Graham Thompson beside the picturesque Ashley Gorge bridge. The pair are part of a local tracks and trapping group who run a pest-control programme and maintain a network of traps along the popular Ashley Gorge walking tracks. Today, they’ve kindly agreed to let me tag along and observe their work. The group was initially established by John Burton and Dave Shelton who undertook early track building and trapping efforts, assisted by local home-schooled families, Air Force cadets and scouts. They recognised the need to reduce pest numbers in the areato help protect native flora and fauna. Introduced from Australia in the 1800s, possums are considered a serious pest in New Zealand. With no natural predators and an abundant food supply, their numbers exploded rapidly, causing major environmental damage. Possums feed on native trees, fruit, and flowers, and prey on native birds by eating eggs and chicks, threatening vulnerable species such as kiwi and kōkako. They can also spread bovine tuberculosis (TB) to cattle and deer. Rats are another major concern. A single wild female rat can produce 20 to 70 offspring in a year, allowing populations to spread rapidly. Rats feed on seeds, seedlings, insects, lizards, and birds - particularly bad news for ground-nesting species like kiwi. Without pest control, populations grow faster than nature can balance. Trapping isn’t about eliminating every pest at once; it’s about ongoing management to keep numbers low enough for native species to survive. Brian Pilbrow, a member of the Oxford Lions, took over leadership of the group two years ago from more recent team leader Mike McIntosh, after Mike’s ankle began playing up. Today, the Ashley Gorge tracks and trapping group features a team of five active volunteers. They keep in touch via a WhatsApp group chat and take turns walking and reporting on their own trap lines each week. The peaceful sound of the river and scent of native bush surrounds us as we cross the bridge and climb the 60 steps marking the start of the walking tracks. What began in 2015 as a family-friendly 1.1km loop has since expanded to include the Waterfall Track - a steeper climb on a well-formed track with a lookout and waterfall reward - and the Totaranui Track, a rougher route that diverts more advanced hikers from the loop and leads past a magnificent old tōtara. All tracks have been built and maintained by locals, in partnership with the Waimakariri District Council and DOC. Graham pauses to snip back an overgrown branch, then points to a bush-clad hilltop nearby. It marks the route of the soon-to-open Skyline Trail, which will also include a pest-control line and add to the group’s ongoing maintenance work. “It’s a good excuse to get out and stay active” says Graham, whose wife Cathy is also part of the trapping team. “And it’s rewarding to know we’re helping the bush and birdlife thrive.” The team use a variety of traps, some visible beside the walking paths and others set among the undergrowth or fixed to tree trunks. Traps are spaced roughly 100 metres apart. Some are self-resetting, while others require resetting after each catch. The first few traps Graham checks are empty. four

He adds a fresh dollop of peanut-butterlike bait. “We don’t use poison,” Brian explains as he shows me a container of brown, tacky paste. “In an area like this, which is popular with walkers and dogs, baited traps are safer, and they work well.” Since the programme began, the team has noticed thinning patches of bush starting to regenerate. Birdlife is monitored at points along the trail, with kererū (wood pigeon) and korimako (bellbirds) often among the first species seen returning. Some weeks the traps lie empty; other weeks they record possums, rats, mice, stoats, and hedgehogs. Each catch represents a small but necessary step toward protecting New Zealand’s unique native environment. The day before, team member Ron had recorded 4 possums, 2 rats, and 2 mice along the higher Totaranui Track. “It’s hard to say which pest causes the most damage,” Brian reflects. “Possums are certainly widespread, but rats do a lot of harm to young birds and nests.” The bush around us feels alive with birdsong as we follow the gently winding path in dappled light. Brian proudly mentions that these tracks are now the second most popular in North Canterbury after Castle Hill, attracting more than 10,000 visitors each year. With easy access just ten minutes from Oxford, varied track options, and a river to cool off in afterwards, it’s easy to see why. Ahead, Graham darts off-track toward another trap station positioned next to a honeyscented beech tree. “Success! We’ve got a rat!” he calls back. A large Norway rat has been caught. Graham removes the carcass, rebaits the trap, and logs the catch on an app that records trap locations and captures for a nationwide biodiversity database. When asked for simple conservation tips, Brian suggests starting close to home. Setting a basic rat trap near compost bins or sheds, in places safe from pets, is an easy way for locals to contribute. Next time you’re walking through our beautiful local tracks, spare a thought for the volunteers who maintain them. And if you see a pest trap, please leave it alone and let it do its job. Wheels With Wings returns for 5th year. The Oxford & Districts Lions, together with the Oxford Community Trust, are excited to once again bring the Wheels with Wings Rally back to Oxford. Celebrating its fifth year, the rally will be held on Sunday, January 18th, promising another exciting day for motoring and aviation enthusiasts. Previous years events have been very popular, attracting hundreds of classic and modern vehicles, motorcycles, and aircraft. CO U R G E T T E , P OTATO, B R I E & C R A N B E R R Y TA R T With Christmas over, and the garden producing more courgettes than we can consume, here’s a simple delicious tart that tastes of summer!
Ingredients 2 or 3 courgettes 500g new potatoes 2 cloves garlic 1 bunch fresh thyme 1 lemon (zest of) Olive oil 500g puff pastry 1 egg 1 small brie wheel 1 tbs sumac Jar of cranberry jelly Salt & pepper
It’s that time of year again.. Hayfever is a term used to describe an allergy, which may be either seasonal, such as in spring when there is plenty of pollen or new plant growth which causes the allergy; or perennial, when you are allergic to dust, pet hair or other irritant substances. The severity and type of hayfever varies from person to person, but can make you miserable if not treated and the symptoms prevented. When you have an allergy the body releases a substance called histamine, which is why the most common medicines used to treat allergies are called antihistamines. These block the effect of histamine and will prevent any more histamine release, which should prevent the allergy getting worse. Other treatments often involve a nasal drop or spray. These include steroid based sprays, antihistamine sprays, saline rinses or sprays and decongestant drops or sprays. Eye drops are also available to help with itchy watery eyes. A cough may occur from persistent nasal secretions running down and irritating the back of the throat. This is called post-nasal drip, and may also be helped by antihistamines, and should not be treated with medicines to stop coughing. Talk to your community pharmacist about the right medicine to treat your hayfever, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding as not all medications are recommended.
Method • Oven on bake 200 degrees celsius • On a lightly floured surface roll out the pastry to the size of a large baking sheet (20cm x 40cm) approximately • With a sharp knife score a border about 3cm in the pastry to create a frame. Chill in refrigerator. • Slice potatoes thinly, toss in olive oil with salt and pepper place on lined baking sheet and roast in the oven until golden brown. Remove and leave to cool. • Slice courgettes into rings and fry off in hot pan just to soften. • Place courgettes in a bowl, add extra salt, crushed garlic, lemon zest and chopped thyme and toss, making sure all the courgettes are well coated. • Remove prepared pastry base from refrigerator, place roasted potatoes on the base, then place courgettes on top. • Chop the brie into small cubes and place on top. • Brush the edge on the pastry with egg. Sprinkle edge with sumac. • Place in oven and cook until pastry is golden, approximately 30 mins • Once cooked dot with the cranberry jelly, and serve. • Enjoy hot or cold.

The overall key is to smile and have the confidence that your smile is engaging and friendly. We really enjoy helping people change their perceptions about their teeth and how they feel about their smile, it’s really critical to your confidence to feel you can smile and be happy with your teeth!

From December 5th to 7th, the Mitre 10 Sports Park in Hastings was alive with excitement as more than 1,100 young athletes took part in the 52nd New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Championships. Among them were two of our own, Matilda Hart and Gus Johnstone, who proudly represented Oxford Area School on the national stage. With temperatures soaring throughout the weekend, they not only chased personal bests but also battled the heat with determination and resilience. In the highly competitive Junior Under-16 Triple Jump, Matilda Hart delivered a strong performance, finishing 11th out of 20 athletes. While she didn’t quite reach her personal best this time, Matilda was thrilled with her result and thoroughly enjoyed the electric atmosphere and the opportunity to compete at such a high-level event. Meanwhile, Gus Johnstone put on an impressive display in the same grade, earning a fantastic 5th place, a commendable achievement, especially in the challenging hot conditions. We are incredibly proud of both Matilda and Gus for their outstanding efforts and for representing our school with such heart, dedication, and sportsmanship. Their achievements reflect not only their hard work but also the encouragement and support they receive from our school community. A heartfelt thank-you goes to their parents for supporting their journey and making it possible for these talented athletes to compete at this level. Congratulations, Matilda and Gus—we are all so proud of you!
Mears Bush bug houses A group of Year 7-8 students made some fabulous bug houses as part of our ongoing connection with Mears Bush. A bug house provides a safe place for insects to shelter, nest, and supports a healthy eco system. It was an exciting time putting these bug houses on the track. We are thankful for the work the Men's Shed put into helping us create these.

Quail Island In December, our Year 10 cohort descended on Quail Island for 3 days of adventure... As part of the Year 10 ROAR programme (which stands for Resilience, Opportunities, Adventures and Reflective) we set off for our annual camp on Ōtamahua/Quail Island. To make the journey as important as the destination, we had the bus from school drop us off at the base of the Bridle Path and we all walked the track over to the ferry, which provided amazing views and a great first adventure! After a quick ferry ride over to the Island (and after moving the gear) we were ready to get into camp living, where students prepared all their own tents, cooking groups and food rationing for the 3 days. The camp saw a mix of team building activities, circle time chats, solo reflections as well as plenty of swimming, raft building and just taking time to enjoy this beautiful slice of Aotearoa. A highlight for all of us was the incredible treasure hunt/orienteering course that Mr Burston set up on the island on Tuesday morning; although there was rain, we all got to see the students competitive side as they traversed in teams across the island.

From The Gateway Programme 2025 The Tertiary Education Commission-funded Gateway Programme here at Oxford Area School is designed to strengthen the pathway for students to progress from school to the world of work, by placing senior students in a workplace of an industry that they are interested in, for one day per week, for an agreed number of weeks. This gives students a wonderful opportunity to gain practical, hands-on work skills in real workplaces, try out potential careers, which may help with future subject decisions, and build relationships with employers, all while still enrolled at school. Alongside their work placement, students also complete their NZ Comprehensive Workplace First Aid Certificate, a Workplace Health and Safety Certificate and also work on industry-based Unit Standards, relevant to their chosen placement industry. This will all earn them credits towards NCEA, and may help them with future employment/training and potential career decisions. The Oxford Community has once again been very supportive of the Gateway Programme this year. Our students who took Gateway as a subject, have gained work experience, learned valuable work skills and had a beneficial insight into a variety of industries. We are very proud of all the students who attended camp this year, they all pushed themselves out of their comfort zones in different ways. Although it was just three days, this camp is one that the students will remember as a highlight of their schooling days. Celebrating the Completion of the Ashley Gorge Information Shelter: A Community Triumph As we step into the new year, the Ashley Gorge Reserve community is thrilled to announce the completion of our brand-new Information Shelter. This new addition isn’t just a building- it's a testament to the collective effort, dedication, and generosity of our entire c ommunity. About a year ago, the idea for the Ashley Gorge Information Shelter took root within the Ashley Gorge Advisory Group. The committee recognised that having a dedicated information centre would be invaluable for visitors - a place to share the rich history of the area, highlight the natural beauty, and provide practical tips on local attractions and activities. From the start, it was clear that we wanted a building that would blend seamlessly into the existing landscape. The vision was not only to create an informational hub but also to offer a versatile space—a small room that could be used to support events and gatherings as needed.
Leadership and Management Appreciation
We'd be remiss not to thank Robert Judson and Jean-Pierre Derveaux for their exceptional management of the project. Their leadership ensured that we stayed on track and met our goal of finishing before Christmas, so we can now welcome visitors to a fully completed shelter.
Looking Ahead: Final Touches in the New Year
While the shelter structure is now complete, our work continues. Early in the new year, the Ashley Gorge Advisory Group will focus on installing and refining all the informational displays, ensuring that the centre becomes a rich resource of maps, historical insights, and tips for every visitor.
In the end, this shelter stands as a symbol of what we can achieve together. We’re grateful to everyone involved and invite you to come and experience the new information centre for yourself.

Wishing you all a very happy and healthy New Year. I hope that you have all managed to spend some time with your loved ones over the Christmas period and found time for some rest and relaxation. I’m excited to get back into work for another productive year both in Wellington and here in the Waimakariri advocating for local constituents. 2025 was a busy year in Parliament with the Government fixing the basics like education and law and order. We have reduced violent crime, ram raids and youth offending, while the cell phone ban in schools has made a huge positive impact on our children’s learning and social interactions in the playground. The Government has also agreed to progress a rates cap to help councils keep rates increases under control and reduce pressure on household budgets. Councils will not be able to increase rates beyond the upper end of the range, unless they have permission from a regulator appointed by central government. We believe households are careful with their spending and councils should be too. Speaking of council spending, the Government has announced proposals that would simplify how we plan our cities and regions. One proposal would see elected regional councillors replaced with new Combined Territories Boards made up of mayors from the region’s city and district councils. This would streamline regional decision-making across planning, infrastructure, and regulation, reduce duplication, and strengthen accountability. It would also remove an unnecessary, confusing, and expensive structure. My offices in Kaiapoi and Rangiora are both open for business from January 19, and as always I am here to help, so please reach out if you have an issue you would like assistance with - or alternatively let us know if you have a business or event you would like me to visit. Happy New Year to you all. It has been another community Christmas in Oxford with a good turnout at the Christmas Carols in Pearson Park, and the ever popular Christmas Wonderland. These events are run by volunteers and characterise what Oxford is all about - community participation and spirit. We are lucky to have the Community Trust, the Oxford Promotions and the Lions put their hands up to run these events, and contribute so much to the festive spirit. The Ashley Gorge Advisory Group has also been busy over the past couple of months working on an information kiosk for the Reserve that will display information regarding the various tracks that are now available for all levels of fitness, and which are proving to be very popular with locals and visitors. The Advisory Group is hoping to have an official opening in February to highlight its work and to thank all of those who contributed to the project particularly Jean-Pierre who has coordinated the project and is the driving force behind the many improvements that have been occurring at the Gorge. Looking back on 2025 it was good to see many quality candidates vying for positions on Council and Community Boards and I was very grateful that the Community has put their faith in me again as a Community Board representative. Our Community Board is largely the same as last time with the addition of Wayne Godfrey, so we are in a good position to continue the advocacy work that we started in 2025. In November we attended the Environment Court Hearing regarding the Woodstock Quarries application for a landfill and submitted on behalf of the Community. We expect a preliminary decision over the next couple of months and we will keep you updated on our facebook page. Looking forward we have another exciting community event - Wheels with Wings on January 18th. This is always a great day out for those that love anything with motors, held in a lovely location - thanks to the Lions and Oxford Community Trust Enjoy your holidays.

with Oxford Club President Kyle Scott HI there, Welcome to the first edition of from the President’s Desk. As we reflect on the past year, on behalf of our Manager Donna, her team and the Executive Committee, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our members for your continued support. It certainly has been a challenging time for many and as a small rural club we have felt those pressures together. Your loyalty and support of our club have made a real difference and have helped ensure that the clubs’ doors have remained open as a community hub for Oxford and District. Interestingly the early rationale for forming our club was because community members were concerned that the hotels were charging too much for their product for the working man. Detailed information on the early history of our club is difficult to trace after its opening in 1887. The greatest growth period for our club was between 1975 and 1985. During this period the Oxford Club underwent an extensive building programme which included the introduction of the club Bistro. Also, during this period, we saw the introduction of female bar staff and full female membership in 1982. Looking ahead the club is hopeful and positive about the future and looks forward to your continued support as we move through 2026. Let’s work together and keep the club thriving for years to come. In the coming holiday period pop on into the Oxford Club, a small club with atmosphere and personality. Also, there is never a better time to join our club and enjoy all the many benefits of belonging to our club. I look forward to greeting you all over the festive season.

I hope everyone has had a safe Christmas and holiday season. We have finished the year doing 290 jobs (at the time of writing). Summertime is a busy time to get out and about doing lots of activities, but with this brings more opportunities to require an ambulance’s assistance. If you are adventuring into our hills doing bush walks, wear appropriate foot wear - not jandals, take your epi pen if you are allergic to bee stings, have extra warm clothing and plenty of food and water in case the weather changes. If you are at a barbecue and you choke, don’t go away from the group or at least take someone with you if you do. When outdoors remember to wear a hat, tee-shirt, sun block and stay in the shade if you can, and drink plenty of water, I would like to congratulate Georgina and Hannah on completing their “Bachelor of Health Science in Paramedicine”. Oxford is very well covered by experienced well qualified personal, but we would rather not have to visit you, so please stay safe. Could I also ask everyone to please go out to the entrance to your property and check your house number is visible from both directions, if not please see to this as soon as possible. We all need to ensure we can be found easily in an emergency. Clear and accurate information given to the call taker ensures you get prompt and appropriate resources sent to you also. The ambulance station at Oxford is not manned 24 hours a day. If you require emergency assistance please call 111.

November was another exceptionally busy month for the the Brigade with seventeen calls. Two calls we were asked to assist the Cust Brigade.

In our district four calls were to assist St John , three calls to rubbish or vegetation fires, two of which were controlled burns with the owners in attendance and the other an out of control rubbish fire that got into surrounding vegetation. We were assisted by the Cust and Swannanoa Brigades to bring it under control. Three calls were to motor vehicle accidents, two of them the occupants received no injuries and the other was an all terrain vehicle that went over a bank in a remote area. The driver received serious injuries and was airlifted to hospital by Westpac helicopter. There were two commercial alarm activations and the reason for the activations could not be found, one to assist with a dog that had become locked in a vehicle, one to a car fire that was totally destroyed and one to assist with the rescue of a person that had gone over a bank on a mountain bike on the Wharfedale Track badly injuring an ankle. He was airlifted to hospital by Westpac Helicopter. This brings our total calls for the year to eighty eight. This months message is; ALCOHOL IS INVOLVED IN 50% OF ALL HOUSE FIRES. So if you are planning on having a few, don’t get the frypan out. Get takeaways or use the microwave instead.
