Estimados amigos: Un año más tengo el placer de dirigirme a todos vosotros con motivo del cuarto CSI en Maeza,que tendrá lugar del 7 al 9 de julio. Tres años de competición de saltos de obstáculos en Sariego, trabajando para crecer en cada edición. Este año recibiremos jinetes de 18 países, que ofrecerán un espectáculo deportivo de la maxima calidad. La edición 2023 cuenta con un trofeo especial al mejor deportista sub-21 que, patrocinado por la Mancomunidad de la Sidra, pone de manifiesto nuestro compromiso con las jóvenes promesas. Nacimos con voluntad de ser una cita clásica en el calendario deportivo estival. Gracias a todo el equipo humano que trabaja como un reloj de precisión hemos conquistado ese espacio. Gracias a Sariego, a la Comarca de la Sidra y a todos los vecinos y visitantes que vienen a presenciar el evento, por su apoyo. ¡A disfrutar!

Dear friends: One more year I am pleased to address you all on the occasion of the fourth CSI in Maeza, which will take place from the 7th to the 9th of July. Three years of show jumping competition in Sariego, working to grow in each edition. This year we will welcome riders from 18 countries, who will offer a sporting spectacle of the highest quality. The 2023 edition has a special trophy for the best under-21 athlete which, sponsored by the Mancomunidad de la Sidra, shows our compromise with the young promises. We were born with the aim of becoming a classic event on the summer sporting calendar. Thanks to all the human team that works with total precision, we have achieved this space. A principios de junio de 2023, Maeza inauguraba su quirófano equino de Asturias en sus instalaciones, cubriendo así la carencia que tenía el sector ecuestre asturiano y de zonas limítrofes. Esta instalación veterinaria moderna y pionera, cuenta con todos los medios que se pueden encontrar en cualquiera del ramo en el resto de Europa y estará operativo hasta que se tramite la futura clínica. Cuenta con servicio en urgencias y cirugía programada, lo que permitirá lograr un importante ahorro en transporte y de sufrimiento para el animal. At the beginning of June 2023, Maeza inaugurated it’s first equine surgery facility in Asturias at its premises, addressing the lack that existed in the Asturian equestrian sector and neighboring areas. This modern and pioneering veterinary facility is equipped with state-of-the-art resources comparable to any in the industry across Europe, and it will remain operational until the future clinic is established. ¿Cuáles son las líneas maestras del acuerdo y el método de trabajo? “En principio, el plan es que mi padre y yo visitemos Maeza durante unos días, 4 ó 5 veces al año. La idea es ver cómo trabajan los caballos y luego hablar de cada uno de ellos para trazar un plan junto con el equipo de la yeguada. Tendremos siempre 2 ó 3 caballos de Maeza en nuestras instalaciones de Someren, donde continuamos su educación para darles más experiencia en concursos. La idea es que sean cada vez más competitivos y venderlos”. ¿Qué caballos de Yeguada Finca Maeza estás montando actualmente” “Son dos: Graf de Maeza y Flint de Maeza. El primero tuvo desde el principio un gran desarrollo y evolución. Tuvimos buenos resultados enseguida y sigue en esa línea. Sólo tiene 7 años, pero ya hizo una prueba nacional de 1’40 y sigue creciendo en ese nivel. Con Flint de Maeza ha sido totalmente diferente. Hemos necesitado más tiempo para conocernos y coger confianza, aunque ahora ya empezamos a tener un buen feeling juntos. Tiene 8 años y está compitiendo en 1’35. Es un caballo muy competitivo, hace dos semanas ganamos la final de 1’35 en un concurso nacional”. ¿Qué opinas de la tendencia de utilizar una o pocas yeguas para tener muchas crías utilizando las técnicas modernas? “Creo que a largo plazo no es el mejor planteamiento. Con las últimas técnicas se pueden criar muchos potros con una sola yegua cada año, pero pienso que se deben utilizar más líneas de sangre para conseguir la mejor combinación. Una combinación puede parecer buena sobre el papel, pero no tiene por qué serlo en la vida real. Por ejemplo, 16

cuando sigues una receta de cocina paso a paso, no tiene por qué salir bien el 100% de las veces. A menudo, hay que hacer pequeñas correcciones para mejorarla. Si nos limitamos a utilizar unas pocas yeguas, al final ya no tenemos elección”. ¿Se sabe pronto qué caballo tiene más posibilidades de alcanzar el alto nivel? “Cada caballo es diferente, por lo general, los caballos jóvenes suelen ser muy absorbentes y aprenden todo con facilidad, pero los hay tardíos, que necesitan un poco más de tiempo como consecuencia de algunos problemas físicos o de mentalidad. Sin embargo, en ambas situaciones, si se dan algunos saltos con el caballo, se puede sentir si tiene talento. Es muy importante la altura con la que salta sobre los obstáculos y lo cuidadoso que es. Algunos caballos jóvenes saltan demasiado hacia delante y parece una desventaja, pero con el tiempo, sobre todo en niveles superiores, es una ventaja. Tienen que saltar con facilidad y gustarles su trabajo. Por supuesto, al final todas las piezas del puzzle tienen que encajar para conseguir un caballo que acabe en el nivel más alto, con el jinete o amazona adecuados”. ¿Se va demasiado deprisa en la hípica actual con los caballos jóvenes? “Tienen que aprender a confiar en el jinete y adquirir experiencia en los recorridos y por ello, es mejor permanecer un poco más en la misma altura hasta que se sienta confiado antes de subir de nivel. Cada caballo puede ser diferente en esto y es muy importante escucharlos. Si no lo haces y te precipitas, al final tendrás que bajar dos escalones. Y siempre intentamos evitarlo. Todos los implicados en la preparación de un caballo tenemos una gran

EN EL EQUIPO FAMILIAR DE LOS VAN DER VLEUTEN, EL MENOR DE LOS HERMANOS, ERIC JR., ES EL ENCARGADO DE COORDINARSE CON SU PADRE Y SU HERMANO PARA DESARROLLAR LA FORMACIÓN Y PUESTA A PUNTO DE JÓVENES TALENTOS, CABALLOS QUE NECESITAN TRABAJAR BAJO LA DIRECCIÓN DE MANOS EXPERTAS PARA MOSTRAR EN EL DEPORTE TODAS SUS CUALIDADES. UN PERFIL QUE HA LLEVADO AL MENOR DE LOS HERMANOS VAN DER VLEUTEN A CONVERTIRSE, DESDE SUS INSTALACIONES EN PAÍSES BAJOS, EN UN EMBAJADOR DE YEGUADA FINCA MAEZA EN EUROPA, DONDE YA MUESTRA JÓVENES PRODUCTOS NACIDOS EN SARIEGO.

“La verdad es que no nos esperábamos el planteamiento que nos hizo Oxer Sport, empresa con la que tenemos muy buena relación, que nos puso en contacto con la familia Bares-Maestre, propietaria de la Yeguada Finca Maeza. Así fue como empezamos a hablar y todo fluyó tan bien por ambas partes, que decidimos mutuamente iniciar nuestra colaboración”.

responsabilidad y es fundamental que no nos olvidemos de su naturaleza. Por eso, todos nuestros caballos sin excepción salen al campo al menos cada dos días y si es posible, todos los días. Se comportan muy bien porque están acostumbrados, pero si tienes un caballo que no está acostumbrado a tener esta libertad puede ser muy peligroso, porque no conoce su propio poder. Estamos muy “mal acostumbrados” a las buenas pistas que tenemos en los concursos cercanos a Someren, pero es bueno para el caballo acostumbrarse a diferentes suelos y escenarios para fortalecerse, que no trabajen siempre en la misma pista, una y otra vez. En este sentido, también es muy bueno montar en el bosque y necesario para la mente del caballo”. ¿Le queda tiempo a un Van der Vleuten para algo más que los caballos? “Desde luego, los caballos son lo más importante, creo que el 90% de nuestras conversaciones giran en torno a los caballos. Todos trabajamos a tiempo completo para conseguir el mejor entorno para ellos. ¿Tiempo para alguna otra afición? A mí me gusta practicar deportes, como golf, fútbol o squash, estar activo me hace feliz y cuando tengo alguna tarde libre la dedico a practicarlos. Pero la mayoría del tiempo lo ocupan los caballos. Por suerte, a mi pareja y a mi hija también les gustan y eso facilita las cosas”.

ERIC VAN DER VLEUTEN JR, between Someren and Maeza The word “Van der Vleuten” means to speak of equestrian sport at the highest level, but also knowledge of the horse in an integral way, from breeding to the training of future champions. In the Van der Vleuten family team, the youngest of the brothers, Eric Jr., is responsible for coordinating with his father and brother the training and development of young talents, horses that need to work under the guidance of expert hands to show all their qualities in sport. A profile that has led the youngest of the Van der Vleuten brothers to become, from his facilities in the Netherlands, an ambassador for Yeguada Finca Maeza in Europe, where he is already showing young products born in Sariego. “The truth is we did not expect the approach made by Oxer Sport, a company with which we have a very good relationship and who put us in contact with the Bares-Maestre family, owners of Yeguada Finca Maeza. That’s how we started talking. Everything flowed so well on both sides so we mutually decided to start our collaboration”. What are the outlines of the agreement and the working method? Initially, the plan is that my father and I will visit Maeza for a few days, 4 or 5 times a year. The idea is to observe how the horses are being trained and then have discussions about each individual horse in order to develop a plan together with the stud team. We will always have 2 or 3 Maeza horses at our facilities in Someren, where we continue their education to provide them with more competition experience. The goal is for them to become increasingly competitive and to sell them.

Which horses from Yeguada Finca Maeza are you currently riding? “There are two: Graf de Maeza and Flint de Maeza. The first one showed a great development and evolution from the beginning. We achieved good results right away and he continues in that line. He is only 7 years old, but he has already done a national 1’40m class and continues to grow at that level. With Flint de Maeza it has been totally different. We needed more time to get to know each other and gain confidence, although now we are starting to have a good feeling together. He is 8 years old and is currently competing in 1’35m. He is a very competitive horse, two weeks ago we won the 1’35m final in a national competition”. What do you think about the trend of using one or a few mares to produce a lot of foals using modern techniques? “I think that in the long term it is not the best approach. With the latest techniques you can breed a lot of foals with one mare every year, but I think you have to use more bloodlines to get the best combination. A combination may look good on paper, but it doesn’t have to be good in real life. For example, when you follow a cooking recipe step by step, it doesn’t have to work 100% of the time. Often, small corrections have to be made to improve it. If we limit ourselves to using a few mares, in the end we don’t have a choice. Is it known early on which horse has more chances of becoming a top performer? “Every horse is different, in general, young horses tend to be very absorbing and learn everything easily, but there are also late horses, which need a bit more time as a result of some physical or mentality problems. However, in both situations, if you take a few jumps with the horse, you can feel if they have talent. It is very important how high they jump over obstacles and how careful they are. Some young horses jump too far forward and it looks like a disadvantage, but with time, especially at higher levels, it is an advantage. They have to jump with

ease and like their job. Of course, in the end all the pieces of the puzzle have to fit together to get a horse that ends up at the highest level, with the right rider. In the equestrian world of today, are we going too fast with young horses? “They need to learn to trust the rider and gain experience on the courses and so it is better to stay a bit longer at the same height until they feel confident before moving up a level. Every horse can be different in this and it is very important to listen to them. If you don’t and you rush it, you will have to go down two steps in the end. And we always try to avoid that. All of us involved in the preparation of a horse have a great responsibility and it is essential that we don’t forget their nature. That’s why all our horses, without exception, go out in the field at least every two days and if possible, every day. They behave very well because they are used to it, but if you have a horse that is not used to having this freedom it can be very dangerous, because it does not know its own power. We are very “badly accustomed” to the good arenas we have in the shows near Someren, but it is good for the horse to get used to different grounds and scenaries to get stronger, that they don’t always work on the same arena, again and again. In this sense, it is also very good to ride in the forest and necessary for the horse’s mind”. Does a Van der Vleuten have time for more than just horses? “Certainly the horses are the most important thing, I think 90% of our conversations revolve around horses, we all work full time to get the best environment for them. Time for any other hobbies? I enjoy playing sports, like golf, football or squash... Being active makes me happy and when I have a free afternoon I enjoy practicing them. But most of my time is taken up by horses. Luckily, my partner and my daughter also like horses and that makes things easier.” CSI 3* MAEZA 2023

TOÑO VELASCO

a sido profesor especialista en proyectos de diseño en la Escuela Superior de Arte del Principado de Asturias, profesor de diseño y arte para alumnos de altas capacidades para APADAC. Fue miembro fundador de la revista satírica FUNDICIÓN PRINCESA DE ASTUCIAS.

Actualmente vive en Oviedo desarrollando su actividad artística personal, combinando esta tarea con su labor docente desarrollando talleres experimentales relacionados con las artes plásticas como REAPRENDIENDO A DIBUJAR y BAILANDO CON UN LÁPIZ. También desarrolla actividades de “UVE PAINTING” como “PIDEME LA LUNA” intervenciones en vivo en diversos espectáculos musicales y teatrales.

He currently lives in Oviedo developing his personal artistic activity, combining this task with his teaching work developing experimental workshops related to plastic arts such as RE-LEARNING TO DRAW and DANCING WITH A PENCIL. He also develops “UVE PAINTING” activities such as “ASK ME THE MOON” live interventions in various musical and theatrical performances.

Ha sido referenciado en medios de todo el mundo (Washington Post, El Mundo entre otros) por sus proyectos artísticos siendo el más conocido internacionalmente “ENSAYO SOBRE LA BURLA’’.

He has been referenced in the media all over the world (Washington Post, El Mundo among others) for his artistic projects, the most internationally known being “ESSAY ABOUT MOCKERY”.

En estos momentos ha realizado más de 30 exposiciones entre individuales y colectivas, seleccionado como artísta del mes en la revista MADRID ART PROCESS e incluido en la INTERNATIONAL PORTRAIT GALERY.

e has been a teacher specialising in design projects at the School of Art of the Principality of Asturias, teacher of design and art for students with high abilities for APADAC. He was a founding member of the satirical magazine FUNDICIÓN PRINCESA DE ASTUCIAS.

Las pruebas más importantes del fin de semana serán el Trofeo CaixaBank, que tendrá lugar el sábado por la tarde y el Gran Premio Maeza que se encargará de clausurar el evento el domingo por la tarde.
