The Owensboro Symphony’s 2016-2017 Subscription Series promises to be an exhilarating experience! Four finalists vying to become the next Conductor of the Owensboro Symphony, will take the podium to direct innovative and exciting programs of their own choosing.

Listen, watch and be dazzled throughout the season by the remarkable talent of the four finalists, and then give us your feedback. Following each concert surveys will be available in concert programs, on TheOSO.com, and the Symphony App. Community opinion will be crucial to the search process. Christine Lamprea, cello Daniel Black, conducting Daniel Black, the first conductor finalist opens the season with an extraordinarily interesting work by young American composer Mason Bates. Bates has become a sensation in large part thanks to Mothership, a work premiered by the 2011 YouTube Symphony Orchestra. Black and the Symphony will be joined by the young Columbian American cellist, Christine Lamprea, First Place Laureate of the 2013 Sphinx Competition. The Opening Night performance will conclude with a stirring and inspirational performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.

Conductor finalist, Troy Quinn has chosen a program that may look like a patriotic Fourth of July concert, but is actually a hybrid of classical works and popular/folk tunes. This program will showcase American composers who have worked in multiple genres while celebrating the vast eclectic nature of American music. Joining Quinn and the Symphony will be one of the most celebrated young musicians in the world today, sixteen year-old Geoff Gallante. At six years old, Gallante was the youngest instrumentalist to ever perform at the White House and the Kennedy Center.

Cirque de la Symphonie will return to Cannon Hall for Owensboro’s favorite holiday tradition. Aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers, and magicians bring nonstop thrills to a festive program of seasonal favorites, like Carol of the Bells and Sleigh Ride, and beloved movements from the Nutcracker Suite. Owensboro’s own Skylar Cain and the Owensboro Symphony Chorus will join the Symphony for an evening that will put the audience in the holiday spirit and deliver fun for the whole family!

Conductor finalist Bruce Kiesling, pianist Andrew Tyson, and the Symphony will offer some of the most exciting romantic Russian orchestral masterpieces performed by the world’s finest orchestras and artists. Tyson has been winning competitions around the world since he was 15 years old. He has been hailed “a real poet of the piano” and is emerging as a distinctive and important new musical voice world-wide.

Our last conductor finalist of the season, Roger Kalia and the Symphony will be joined by one of Virginia Opera’s Emerging Artists, soprano Katherine Polit. The audience will be wowed by this performance of Samuel Barber’s Knoxsville: Summer of 1915 - a simple, dreamlike depiction of a summer evening in the American South. The Symphony will conclude the 2016-2017 season with Dvorak’s pastoral Eighth Symphony, where the music is inspired by tranquil landscapes, depicting a summer’s day full of passion, dance and humor.

The Owensboro Symphony’s Community Engagement programs touch the lives of thousands of people annually through free summer concerts, in-school programs, free chamber concerts, master classes in our colleges and high schools, open rehearsals, student performances, private lessons at the Academy, Youth Orchestras, Kindermusik at the Academy, pre-concert lectures and presentations, and collaborations with other non-profit organizations. The impact of these programs build future audiences and musically enrich the lives of the very young and young at heart. Since its inception in September 2014, White on Second has become a popular summer event in downtown Owensboro. Inspired by Le Diner en Blanc in Paris, this Owensboro event was created with the next generation in mind, balancing the right mix of philanthropy and fun.
