Patience – the Father Provides!

So over 20 years ago, I began my career with OCS as a classroom teacher, and then an opportunity came along to lead our marketing efforts. Being in my wheelhouse and feeling as though OCS needed some major attention in this area, I prayerfully decided to roll up my sleeves and see what impacts we could make. Thus began my career in OCS leadership, one that I still enjoy and one that I believe continues to make positive impacts in the many lives we touch!

Along the way, the many people I have worked with would probably attest to my lack of patience when it comes to the improvements, I believe we need and want to make. I am a true believer in continual improvement!  I tend to get very excited about new ideas, new techniques, new projects – which then leads me right into one of my biggest character flaws – patience! UGH! If I could only buy it in bulk at the local Sam’s Club! And of course, no one knows better than I do that it is not one of my strengths. Nevertheless, I get antsy, frustrated, and even agitated sometimes by the time it takes for some things to come to fruition.

Of course, we all know where this is headed, right!?

OCS MISSION STATEMENT

Owensboro Catholic Schools share in the mission of the Church in communion with families and parishes to provide excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics which prepares students to become responsible individuals as well as members of their family, Church, and community.

Preparing Leaders, Achievers, and Believers

Christ is the Reason for This School

Our Father provides for us in His own way, on His own time – a lesson I try to get through my thick head time and time again. No one is surprised either that when a new idea or project is completed on His time, things work flawlessly and according to His will for us in carrying out our mission.

If you happen to fall in my camp of the impatient, I have good news for you. The Lord will give you the grace to “wait” until He is ready to reveal the best plan.

We all know we need your prayer support, your vocal support, and your financial support! If you have been looking at ways to become involved with the progress we are making across OCS, I invite you to come on along and watch the will of our Father unfold. If you still are discerning supporting OCS, there are plenty of opportunities to do so.

Impatient or patient, wherever you fall, OCS needs you – and the Father will provide!

Education with a Difference

When I became a principal 28 years ago, I started greeting students coming into school each morning and continued that practice when I came to Catholic High twelve years ago. Because I didn’t know anyone here when I came, I began asking students their names and looking in yearbooks to memorize faces to get to know them. After about a month, I realized that process was too slow and I thought about the short amount of time seniors had left in their high school career. The best option I could think of to put a name with a face before they were gone was to meet with each one individually.

With no plan other than to ask questions that would help me remember something about each of them and their families and Catholic High, a tradition was born. It started out pretty slow because for some, it was very difficult for them to open up and feel comfortable expressing their feelings to someone they didn’t know, but it got easier for most of them to start opening up. For others, it was like we had known each other for years and they were so eager and had so much to tell, suggest, and reminisce about, that I had to figure out creative ways to bring the meetings to an end!

During these meetings, I told them I wanted to hear all the good and anything that hadn’t gone well for them, along with ideas of how to improve the overall student experience. I also told them that what they told me probably wouldn’t affect them, but could benefit the school and students in the future. As students became comfortable with sharing their stories, which I believe led to some very sincere comments and observations by them, information just came pouring out. Obviously, some seniors are more mature and focused than others, but they all have something to say. I learned so much from the students’ perspective and how they sometimes see things much differently than we as adults do. But by listening, and I think sometimes teenagers just want to be heard, they felt as if they were being taken seriously, which they were! Thankfully, over the years, there have not been that many complaints or gripes. However, if there were some consistencies about concerns or complaints, we addressed them just as we

explore ideas and suggestions that we may have not thought of that could create more positives in the daily school lives of students. Student input from their experiences has been of great importance to me since we always try to make sure we continue to provide a faith-filled,academically challenging and exciting school environment that separates OCHS from anywhere else. Again thankfully, the overwhelming number of students leave OCHS having had a very positive and memorable experience. I could give many stories but one that stands out is the student who just didn’t like books or studying and thought school was a nuisance. He just couldn’t wait to start working and didn’t want to be in school but even he grudgingly admitted, “Well, if I HAVE to go to school, then there is no place I would have rather gone - I do like all the stuff that goes on here!” I think this is a very strong testimonial to what happens here on a daily basis for all students.

So now, with only four months left in this position and reflecting on my time here, I wish I had the amount of space to share the many events, activities, and student stories that I could go on and on about. However, I will just mention a couple. The first is seeing kids come in as young freshmen, getting to know them, and watching them grow and develop in so many ways. This has been a pleasure and provided lots of memorable moments and always reminds me of why I chose this vocation. However, I would have to say that one of the biggest highlights I will share that has had a positive impact on me is getting to sit down and meet with all the seniors. Getting to know more about each student, hearing them talk about their positive experiences, the memories they made and the bonding that has taken place along with their future plans, has only REINFORCED what I had always heard and what I thought about OCHS before I came.

It truly is “Education with a Difference” and there is not a better place anywhere for students to attend school. As I have stated many times, I have been privileged, honored, and without a doubt, blessed, to be the Principal at Owensboro Catholic High!

Planned Gifts

Owensboro Catholic High School alumni have the opportunity to sustain the tradition of excellence through a planned gift. One of the simplest ways to make a meaningful planned gift is through a bequest in your will. If you have already included OCHS in your will or other long-range plan, please let us know! It would be our pleasure to include you as a member of our Legacy Society.

Phonathon 2022 Donors

At this time of year, we like to send the final list of all 2022 Phonathon donors. Some classes have been grouped if only a few gifts were listed. Thank you alumni and friends, for believing and supporting the mission of OCHS. You make a tremendous difference, and we could not do this important work without each of you. These unrestricted gifts given to the Phonathon are used daily where the obligations and opportunities are greatest.

Please keep in mind this list is put together by humans and we try very hard to include everyone who gave in 2022 correctly. If we have made an error, please accept our sincere apologies and kindly call 270-686-8896 to let us know.

OCHS Finds SUCCESS with Wrestling Program

Discussions of starting a wrestling program at Owensboro Catholic High School had been happening for several years. The winter sport develops quickness and athleticism as well as aids in conditioning and toughness. “We presented the plan to start a wrestling program at the school to Principal Gates Settle, OCS President Tom Lilly, and Athletic Director Jason Morris, and they were all on board,” said Coach Chip Pride. “We could not have gotten this started without their support.” Pride said OC began their first practices in 2020. Shortly after, they were shut down due to COVID. “Despite the COVID delays, we persisted and opened competition with a match at Warren County in January of 2021. Our first year we placed two wrestlers in the top 6 in the region. Last year we placed one in the top 5.”

With support of the school, administration, and community, the wrestling team has grown from 10 wrestlers the first season, to 14, and now 17. “It is great to see the program grow and bring in more people in support. With the great response we have had from the youth and middle school club, we expect to see these numbers continue to climb over the next several years,” says Pride. The OC Youth Program, started by Coach Matt Allen in 2020, currently has 70 participants. Pride says the kids practice a couple times a week and learn basic wrestling skills. “There are options for local competitions so the young wrestlers can receive valuable experience,” says Pride. From the Youth Program, Coach Matt Allen has developed the Middle School team for students in 5th-8th grade.

In unity with all Owensboro Catholic School Athletic programs, the wrestling team incorporates the Virtue=Strength program into their daily routines. “Strength, persistence, perseverance, integrity–we preach all these daily to our student athletes,” said Pride. “We talk to our kids a lot about character and how the things you do on

With the assistance of several volunteers, OC Wrestling was able to outfit the former Aces football locker room with wall mats and wrestling mats. The area provides a great location for the team to practice skills and condition. The team hopes to procure a new competition mat in the future.

the mat are going to translate to the world outside of wrestling.” Virtue=Strength is a Catholic program that compliments the Catholic faith and strengthens students in the practice of virtue. “We have seen results in our team and athletes that no doubt would not have happened had they not wrestled,” explained Pride. “The skills can translate only to other sports, but also to the classroom and life outside of sports and school.” Junior wrestling team member, Andrew Brauer agrees, “Wrestling has made me better in all aspects of my life. I am in the best shape I have ever been in, stronger than ever, and have learned control, how to pace myself, and how to be comfortable out of my element. If I talked to someone interested in joining the wrestling team, I would tell them to 100% do it. The benefits are so worth it. Anyone who plays another sport should do wrestling. It can only help you.”

OCHS has quite the wrestling staff to guide and teach the team: Coach Adam Flowers and Coach Matt Devault wrestled in high school at Evansville Memorial. Chip’s father, Murray Pride, coached wrestling at Tell City, IN. Additionally, Matt Allen (now Associate Head Coach) and Eric Dewig (Assistant Coach) coached many years of youth wrestling at the YMCA, and Eric Dewig started the programs at Daviess County and Apollo.

Matches occur in the months of November-February, with the State Championship taking place mid-February. ♠

Disciplining students is controversial for every school system. At OCS, we strive to be the balance of letting students know that we ARE disciplined and we WILL discipline because we care about how a student’s future turns out. Strong, faith-based discipline makes better friendships, spouses, parents and employees. We don’t always get it right. But we ALWAYS give every situation our best effort to get it right.  Forgive us when we don’t. But in order to truly impact a student’s life, they HAVE to know we care about them personally. Instinctively, we all know when people “enjoy” the process of letting others know they are wrong. Kids know it too, and nobody responds very well to these forms of discipline OR punishment. Discipline is NEVER enjoyable. But it also takes some discipline to work hard to get it right. Discipline is derived from the word “disciple,” and you can’t lead a strong Christian life without evaluating, daily, how we should discipline our actions, reactions, thoughts, and our prayer life. It takes a lot of work, for students and for adults  to look at other people the way that Christ looks at other people and to try and react to situations that reflect our Catholic Christian virtues.

Over the summer, Owensboro Catholic Schools invested in the VIRTUE=STRENGTH program. This program gives coaches and teachers more tools to teach Christian virtues. There are ways to incorporate the work of saints and Catholic rituals into our practices and banquets. We can do more than simply recite a prayer. Our students, especially in this day and time, need stronger images and routines of faith to help combat all they are facing.

Coaches are leaders. Leaders have a higher level of responsibility to guide the lives of the young people entrusted to their care. Disciplining with love is complicated work, but we sincerely appreciate all of the coaches who work with our children. We need to prayerfully support the work of our coaches as they instill powerful principles of discipline into their sporting activities. Coaches can be a great gift to our system and to our children. We need to constantly remind each other that the children we serve KNOW whether our faith is authentic and genuine. Nobody comes under more scrutiny than our coaching staffs. It’s very complicated work. But they work hard to do the best they can to get it right. We’re all guilty of thinking we can do it better, especially after a loss! But our coaches and athletic programs are an important part of how we teach students to accept loss, accept our limitations, work in community to support each other, and to celebrate PROPERLY for those times when our hard work gives us the desired outcome! We all love to win, but we reveal more about our character and nature when things DON’T go our way.

Again, thanks to our coaches. We appreciate your hard work and your effort to help shape our young people and their role in the community.

Raychel N. Bahnick ’16 Fulbright Scholar

Raychel went to the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering to study civil engineering. While at Speed school, she was involved with the Society of Women Engineers to mentor and encourage young girls to pursue STEM. She also completed three co-op rotations with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) where she worked in hydraulic engineering and conducted eco-hydraulic research in the USACE engineering research and development lab in Vicksburg, MS. During this time, she developed a great interest in understanding how infrastructure interacts and impacts the natural world, particularly in the field of water resources.

Upon receiving her bachelor’s in Civil & Environmental Engineering in May 2020 with honors, she then continued her education at Rice University in Houston, Texas. She studied environmental engineering and completed her master’s thesis on the topic of “Assessing Land Use Change and Land Subsidence Impact on Inland Flooding.” This issue is especially relevant in Houston which is subject to subsidence, or the gradual sinking of the ground overtime, due to groundwater extraction for industry and drinking water. The city is also vulnerable to flooding due to tropical storms from the Gulf of Mexico that deliver intense rainfall. It is important for policy makers and developers to understand how chang-

ing groundwater pumping regulations could impact overland flooding in local communities.

After graduating with her MS from Rice in May 2022, she continued her flood risk research internationally through the U.S. Fulbright Research Grant in flood management. Currently, Raychel is living and working in Delft, Netherlands where she is conducting research in the hydraulic structures and flood risk section at Delft University of Technology. She is quantifying how flood resilience changes due to land subsidence in polder areas. A polder is a low-lying area that would naturally be underwater but is surrounded by levees and pumped dry so that people can live and use the land. Building and maintaining polders has become a way of life in the Netherlands because a third of the country is below sea level and over half of the country is at high risk of flooding. The Dutch have become experts in water management after centuries of living with a constant threat of flooding. They are world leaders in developing innovative solutions to how humans live with water. Raychel is excited about learning from colleagues at TU Delft and bringing back a more global perspective on water management to the United States when she returns.

Raychel plans to continue working in the water resource engineering space and contribute to building a more sustainable, safe world in the future.

Katlyn Winnecke ’16

Upon graduating high school, Katlyn was a direct admit into the Bachelor of Science Nursing Program at the University of Southern Indiana. The spring semester of her freshman year, she decided she wanted to do more than just serve the patients she took care of as a nurse. After looking into the Army ROTC program she contracted by the fall of her sophomore year where she later met her husband who is a Field Artillery Officer in the Army. Throughout ROTC, she spent time as platoon sergeant, platoon leader, company commander, and battalion commander.

Katlyn graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing with a minor in military history a day before commissioning as a second lieutenant in the US Active Duty Army. She spent 8 months through COVID working as a civilian Registered Nurse at St. Vincent Evansville before attending Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Sam Houston, TX where she graduated on the commandant's list. Shortly after, she and her husband packed up their whole lives, cat and dog included, and moved to Landstuhl, Germany where she currently works as an active-duty registered nurse on a medical-surgical/ pediatric floor. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center is a Level II trauma center serving beneficiaries all throughout Europe and Africa.

In August of 2021, Katlyn was actively involved in providing care for the victims of the Kabul Airport bombing and the 21,000 Afghan Refugees who required medical care. Currently her husband is on a year deployment to Iraq and she is working towards the goal of earning the Expert Field Medical Badge, graduating the Army's Critical Care Nurse course, and eventually becoming a Brigade Combat Team Nurse.

Katlyn has been fortunate enough to travel to 12 different countries throughout Europe -  her favorite being Switzerland where she and her husband hiked the mountains with their dog and cat!

“My time at Owensboro Catholic High School set me up for success in more ways than one. I was able to direct commission into the nursing program from my high school GPA and ACT score. My exceptional GPA sent me to the top of the list for a competitive nursing scholarship paying for 3 years of my schooling, books, and living expenses. Most importantly, Owensboro Catholic High School helped deepen my faith through the community and education.  There were many times that my faith alone is what carried me through some of the trainings.”

Sam Mitchell ’22

Sam is a Specialist currently serving in the Kentucky Army National Guard out of the 206th Engineering Batallion in Owensboro, Ky. He was recently awarded a Certificate of Achievement for serving as a representative for the Army’s Sexual Harassment and Assault Response Prevention program. Attending Bellarmine University as a Business Administration major, he’s a member of the Bellarmine Christian Fellowship and hopes to earn a slot to attend Air Assault School and Attend the Basic Leaders Course.

Xavier Evans ’18

Xavier is currently at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia completing the 7 month-long Basic Officer course at The Basic School (TBS). After graduating from TBS in April, he will receive his occupational specialty and first official duty station and assignment. Pictured are Xavier with his parents, Keith and Rachel Evans both graduates of Owensboro Catholic.

Lauren Willett ’17

After playing collegiate softball for 3 years, Lauren made the decision to change her major to Dietetics and transfer to WKU to complete her undergrad. Lauren’s sorority “big sister” was in the ROTC program, and from listening to her experience - and lots of prayer- Lauren knew that was where she should be, and joined the Army ROTC Hilltopper Battalion in January 2021 and officially contracted in October 2022.

Since then, Lauren joined the Recruiting Team and Ruck Team. Last spring, she rucked 26.2 miles with a 40 lb ruck, completing the Mountain Man Memorial March in 9 hours and 7 minutes. She has been the MC for several Veteran’s Day ceremonies, commissioning, and award ceremonies. This past summer while attending the Advanced Camp at Fort Knox for 5 weeks, she completed a 6, 8, and 12 mile ruck, qualified with the M-4 carbine rifle, went through the CBRN (gas) chamber, completed land navigation, learned how to give First Aid, and completed 3 Field Training Exercises.

Most recently she learned that she will be serving on Active Duty orders as a Military Police Officer, and will be commissioning as a 2nd Lieutenant in May 2023- a week before she gets married! She’ll be attending further training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO after graduation.

Outside of ROTC Lauren is the Chief of Staff for the Student Government Association, the President of the Student Dietetic Association, and a member of the Students for Life, Rock Climbing Club, Turning Point USA, and College Republicans. She attends St. Thomas Aquinas on campus and often sees many OC friends!

Lauren feels extremely blessed to have been able to attend OCHS. One of the most important lessons learned here was service to others, especially those unable to defend themselves. Her favorite quote is by St. Francis of Assisi, “For it is in giving that we receive.” Lauren truly believes OCHS led her to her career path and will forever be grateful for that.

Kyle has experienced a variety of cultures of fellow sailors ranging from Hawaii to Ireland to Japan. He’s developed leadership qualities that he has used to carry out various leadership roles. At one point, Kyle had over 80 sailors he was in charge of. He has gained valuable life experiences in his time serving, and will continue to grow in his knowledge. Kyle was recently blessed to be able to marry the love of his life and fellow Catholic High class of '21 graduate Mackenzie Young (now Mackenzie Joiner).

ACTIVE DUTY

Pat Schepers ’18

While enrolled at the University of Kentucky, Pat enrolled in the ROTC program. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration Degree and placed in the top 20 percent of the nation in the ROTC program becoming a Distinguished Military Graduate. During his time at UK, he also earned the Active Duty Component and the Military Intelligence Branch Detailed Infantry. This means that he will spend a few years working as an Infantry Officer and then transition to Intelligence.

Pat is currently at Fort Benning attending IBOLC (Infantry Basic Officer Leader Course). Once completed, he will attend a few other Army schools before leaving for his assigned duty station.

He is thankful for the lessons learned and high standards of Owensboro Catholic for setting up his fellow graduates and himself for success. More importantly, he is thankful for his family and all their support throughout what he calls a “wild journey.”

Robby Leesman ’19

Robby’s passion for aircrafts and flying sparked his interest in joining the United States Navy. Robby’s enlisted rating is Avionics Electrician Technician (ATO). He is currently stationed in Pensacola, Florida.

Mike Weaver ’56

Mike Weaver was inducted into the Kentucky Veterans Hall of Fame on August 27, 2022 and the OfficerCandidate Hall of Fame at Fort Benning, Georgia twenty five years earlier. His active military career started in 1956 at the lowest enlisted grade and ended as an Armor/Cavalry Colonel in April 1992. Along the way, he commanded a 44 man Air Cavalry Platoon and a 215 man Airborne Cavalry Troop, both in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. He also commanded an Armor Battalion in Korea along the 38th Parallel. Between army assignments, he received two military scholarships, the first for undergraduate studies; the second for graduate work. In addition to Korea and Vietnam, his career took him to Cuba, France, England, Europe, and multiple Posts, Camps and Stations across our native land. After the Army, Mike was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives where he served for ten years. His most recent elected position was as Mayor of Radcliff where he served for four years. His late wife of 61 years, Lois Marie, was a model of what an Army wife, with a successful teaching career of her own, could be. Mike is an active member of two Catholic parishes: Saint Christopher in Radcliff and Saint Anthony in Utica.
