Owensboro Catholic Schools share in the mission of the Church in communion with families and parishes to provide excellence in Catholic faith formation and academics which prepares students to become responsible individuals as well as members of their family, Church, and community.
We at OCHS talk a lot about our extracurricular activities and how they are an integral part of the fabric of our school right after faith formation and academics. These activities can contribute to the overall development of our students by teaching so many things that are important life skills such as commitment, dedication, discipline, and time management. There are also the socialization opportunities that are offered along with learning how to deal with the successes and challenges that come with life.
Sports are what usually come to mind when our extracurricular activities are discussed around OCHS and for good reason. There has been so much success over the years in all our sports with state championships being won in many of them. However, many students are either not interested in sports or are gifted in other ways and there are many other extracurricular opportunities that offer these same life skills. And, one of those that is extremely important to our school and students and often overlooked by some is our music program.
Although I have no musical ability, my mother, sisters and brother did, so I grew up seeing marching band competitions, parades and concerts. I never really appreciated those abilities until I got a little older and even more so after being in the school business for so long.
Under the direction of Ed and Katie Hauser, I have certainly learned to appreciate even more the amount of time, commitment, dedication and effort that go into a quality program of any type and there is certainly much of that in our band program.
The OCHS Marching Aces have been knocking on the door of a state championship almost yearly and, while having outstanding seasons and year ending performances, the big prize has always eluded them. But not this year! I am so proud to say that the OCHS Marching Aces are the Class 1A Kentucky State Champions for the FIRST time in school history!
This championship has been in the making for many years and all those who came before this year can take pride in knowing they helped lay the foundation for such a successful program to lead to this accomplishment. We are so happy and proud of all of the members and we are so thankful and appreciative of Ed and Katie and what they do for our school and the students they serve and lead. Even after I am gone from OCHS, one of my fondest memories will be the fall days when I look out my window after school watching the band practicing and seeing the camaradierie, the laughing and joking among band members during breaks and then watching them snap to attention when Mr. Hauser is ready to direct them. It really is a very special program and one that is woven into the fabric of OCHS. Many band members have told me over the years that band is like a family within the family of OCHS, and we are so proud to have been a part of it!

Owensboro Catholic High School band directors Ed and Katie Hauser have built their life around their mutual love for music. The two met at Western Kentucky University where they studied music education. As new graduates, the two began their careers at Owensboro Catholic and married in August 1996.
“We are both dedicated to the Owensboro Catholic Band and Owensboro Catholic,” Ed said. “We are so blessed to have found a band program and a school system where we can pour everything that we have into it. We are a team at school and at home.”
The couple, who recently celebrated their 25th anniversary, said with the long hours of band directing, working together gives them quality time.
“We are sometimes at school from 7:30 a.m. to after 10 p.m. and even longer on a band contest day. Being able to spend time with each other, both doing what we love, is a blessing. We are always bouncing ideas off each other and it is so important for the band program to combine our experiences to help our
students and their families the best that we can.”
In addition to their 26 years leading the Owensboro Catholic High School band, they also teach Beginning Band at the 4-6 Campus, and 7th and 8th grade band at OCMS. The high school program includes marching band, winter ensembles (winter guard, winter percussion, winter winds), and pep band. Ed and Katie are active in the Kentucky Music Educators Association and serve as co-managers for the KMEA District 2 Band Assessment.
All of these roles add up to a rewarding career for both Ed and Katie.
“What drew me to teaching music is that it combines something that I love--which is music, but also to be able to have a career in music and teach students everything that music has to offer,” Ed said. “Band, specifically, teaches so much about music skills and the ability to play instruments—but also problem-solving skills, organization, and teamwork. The aspect of being on a team and working together for a specific goal leads to friend-
ships and memories that last a lifetime.”
The couple’s 26-year career hit a high note when the Owensboro Catholic High School Marching Aces took home the KMEA Class 1A state championship in November for the first time in the band’s history.
“We felt like this particular marching band was going to be strong this season. The student dedication and talent level combined to make it such an outstanding season,” Ed said.
The Marching Aces have reached state championship semifinals every year since 2004 and reached the finals in 2013 and 2019. But this was the first year they won regionals and the Hausers said the band was hopeful for a strong performance at the state competition.
“After a long day and dealing with the challenges of the weather, it was amazing to see them pull together and give it everything that they had. They were only a few seconds into the performance, and it was so much better than at semifinals. It was amazing to see them dig deep and just go for it,” Ed said.
According to the Hausers, the anticipation was building during the long wait until the awards ceremony. “We teach the kids that the process is more important than the outcome,” Ed said. “If you work hard, enjoy what you do, then awards and trophies are icing on the cake.”
But the Hausers admit hearing, “First place and the Governor’s Cup goes to Owensboro Catholic” was a surreal experience.
“Every band and every year are vital to the band program. The championship was not just for this year and these students, but for anyone who has ever been part of the band program,” Ed said.
Upon their return from the state competition, the Hausers said the Owensboro Catholic community response has been outstanding.
“It means so much to these kids for their dedication and hard work to be noticed,” Ed said.
From the celebration parade to the drawings from the elementary students now hung with pride in the band room, Ed says only one word comes to mind – thankful.
“Our hope is to keep the band program going strong for many years to come,” Ed said. “Students at Owensboro Catholic are so strong academically, athletically, and we want people to know that the band program is open for all to create a well-rounded education.”
What’s on the horizon for the Hausers? Simple. Keep doing what they are doing.
“We love the band program and Owensboro Catholic and we want to see the school and program thrive into the future.” ♠

tain which community to pursue. Following graduation, she visited the Sister Servants twice before applying in the fall. She entered as a postulant in January 2021, on the feast of St. Agnes.
The word “postulant” means “to ask.” In this stage, Sister Madeline is asking the community, and the community is asking God, if she is being called to live the life. As of now, she thinks they are both saying “yes.” In July, Sister Madeline will become a novice, and receive the religious habit, and a new name. Her new life is a life of prayer and she is striving for the perfection of charity for God and for neighbor. Please keep her in your prayers and know of her prayers for you!
Sister Madeline Mattingly is living as a postulant in Birmingham, AL with the Sister Servants of the Eternal Word, a religious community who take St. Francis and St. Dominic as their patrons. Their charism is to “teach spiritual things spiritually” in the words of St. Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians. The Sister Servants run a retreat house and open their home to the laity to provide time to pray and take a step back from their busy lives. Sacramental preparation, teaching religion classes at a small school, and other catechetical missions in their local diocese add to the list of ways the Sister Servants honor their vows.

Xavier is currently in his final semester as a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, working toward a B.S. in Quantitative Economics. Following graduation, he will be commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. Xavier reports that having the opportunity to attend the Naval Academy in Annapolis for the past four years has been “an absolute honor and privilege.” He’s grown so much in every facet of his life and now he has the responsibility of putting his growth into action by leading our nation’s sons and daughters.
Reflecting back on his time there, Xavier says he has an immense sense of gratitude for the seeds that were planted while attending Owensboro Catholic High School. Xavier credits his time at OCHS for teaching him the concept of community and nurturing his Catholic faith. The bonds he has formed with his peers at the Academy run deep, out of a shared sense of purpose and duty. But Xavier says the bonds he has formed with those who are also fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, will last a lifetime. As he prepares to enter the next phase of his life, Xavier is thankful to Owensboro Catholic for giving him a foundation of Catholic community that has been even further developed over the past four years.
Madlyn is the owner of The Skin Therapist in Owensboro, KY. She started her business in her sister’s salon 3 years ago, but during the summer of 2021, she decided to relocate to her own space. In just 3 short years, The Skin Therapist has gained more than 1200 clients and provides a wide array of products and services, such as facials, microneedling, waxing, and an Acne Bootcamp. “At The Skin Therapist, our main goal is to ensure that everyone who walks through our doors received more than just a treatment, but a working knowledge on how they can best care for their skin at home.” One key ingredient to her success is the fact that she tries to provide each client with a customized treatment plan that fits their skin care goals, schedule, and budget. Madlyn is always looking to expand her knowledge on the latest and greatest skin care products and procedures to best serve her clientele.

Fellow Aces! Here is some exciting news for your kitchen! Joe Bissmeyer '87 and Monica Bissmeyer Riney '82, along with their three brothers have launched a new cooking product - Bacon Up.
It all started in Monica’s backyard on Thanksgiving Day a few years ago. Instead of using peanut oil for their annual turkey fry, the family amped it up a bit and used bacon grease. Where did they find three gallons of bacon grease? Monica’s husband, Alan Riney '82, is Vice President for a food manufacturer that makes precooked bacon – bacon grease is a large byproduct.
Joe says from that day in the backyard they started plans to launch Bacon Up. The business has been focused in the Texas market for the last two years, but Joe states there are plans to take the product national, with expansion into Kroger planned in mid2022. Currently you can find Bacon Up in Rural King and on Amazon.
