MEET THE 2020 BIA PRESIDENT JEREMY STEWART, JEREMY STEWART CONSTRUCTION Happy New Year!!

“…… each and every member of the BIA has the distinct opportunity to obtain a clear advantage over their competition”

2019 is in the history books, and as many of you, I have spent some time lamenting over last year as well as the last decade! Ironically enough I was also the President of this association in 2010, and I wrote the following as part of my opening message: “As we move into 2011, what is particularly exhilarating to me is the fact that there are still plenty of talented, dedicated, and determined professionals in the construction industry who strive to produce remarkable projects. These professionals ignore the boundless doom and gloom, dire predictions, and long-winded stories of “The Good Old Days,” and are pioneering their way into the “New Marketplace of Tomorrow.” They treat every opportunity as if it were their first, a possible award winner, or perhaps their only. This same group of professionals does this steadfastly, day in and day out, as perpetual proof that they will not be crushed by the current economy.” My how times have changed! As we move into a new decade, the one thing that still remains steadfast, is the dedicated group of industry professionals that make up the membership of the Okaloosa and Walton Building Industry Association. Who is this group of building industry professionals? This same group of professionals are the heart and backbone of the Building IndustryAssociation of Okaloosa andWalton Counties (BIA). The BIA is made up of over 250 professionals from all aspects of the building industry. The BIA focuses its efforts in promoting homeownership, fighting legislation on local, state, and national levels that impacts homeownership, and also striving to be on the leading edge of new technology and construction practices. Moreover, through monthly membership meetings, trade shows, educational opportunities, and numerous committees each and every member of the BIA has the distinct opportunity to obtain a clear advantage over their competition.

If you are not a member of this distinguished group of professionals, and have a burning desire to help build a brighter more sustainable future for the construction industry, I challenge you to join! If you are a member, and you have these same passions, I challenge you to get involved! 2020 will be one of the greatest years for the BIA as an organization. The best way to gain the most of your membership, and help build that burning desire to boldly look into tomorrow, is by networking at our general membership meetings or simply becoming actively involved on one of our many committees. Do just one of these and you will see remarkable results. I am deeply humbled to be surrounded by such an astounding group of professionals, and truly honored to have the opportunity to serve as president of this organization for the upcoming year. With the assistance of our multiple committees, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors, we will continue to find creative and innovative ways to initiate success and abundance in the upcoming year.Together we will all have a fantastic 2020!!

THE BIA 2020 VISION! Dear BIA Member, Almost every day, something happens that reminds me of how grateful I am to be part of the construction industry here in Okaloosa and Walton counties. On February 22-23 will be our 41st Annual Home Show, which blew the doors off last year with unbelievable attendance by thousands of people eager to either buy a new home or enhance the one they have with the products and services our members provide. If you were there, you know. If you weren’t, make plans NOW to be there. P.S. We are bringing back the Friday, February 21st “Home Show Kick-off Party”. As good as things are today, it’s important that we prepare for the future so that our industry remains strong for many years to come. In my mind, there is no better way to ensure a bright future than to invest in the training of young people who can carry our industry forward. Your BIA is already deeply involved in workforce training. Through the Future Builders of America program, we sponsor more than 300 students at FBA Chapters in five middle and high schools in the two-county area. In addition, we have partnered with the national Home Builders Institute and Northwest Florida State College to provide pre-apprenticeship training for exiting military personnel who want to pursue

JANUARY

careers in the construction trades. But there is so much more to do! Specifically, we need more funds to support scholarships and instructors for the Future Builders of America Leadership Summit. This annual event and its hands-on educational approach have proven to be the life-changing experience that gets young people committed to a construction career. We would also like to help some of the voluntary instructors with their travel and food expenses. Also, dollars are needed to create a unique end-of-schoolyear Job Fair so that the kids who have worked so hard can be rewarded with career opportunities. This will NOT be your typical Job Fair. This will be a well-staged celebration of success, not unlike college football signing day or NBA draft day, where kids don a baseball cap showing which employer they have selected (and been selected by) to the applause of their family and friends. There will even be media interviews with the next superstars of our industry! Will you help make these dreams reality? On behalf of BIA President Jeremy Stewart (Jeremy Stewart Construction) and Education Committee Chair Randy Wise (Randy Wise Homes), we are requesting a totally voluntary donation of $100 or more per BIA member. Make your check out to BIA. Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.

AN EVENT

FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Okaloosa $aves is a coalition of volunteers in Okaloosa County under the national America Saves program in conjunction with the University of Florida/IFAS Extension, with a mission to encourage individuals to build wealth and reduce debt. Okaloosa $aves provides free financial information, educational programs, and many other events. The 41st Annual BIA Home Show will be held at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on the Okaloosa Island on Saturday February 22nd from 9:00am-5:00pm and Sunday February 23rd from 11:00am-4:00pm. The Home Show features indoor exhibit booths filled with information on products and services for those who plan to build new homes or wish to remodel or even just “spruce up” their current homes. Last year’s Home Show had over 2,100 attendees over the two-day event! Spend the whole day at our show with your family! Informational seminars and tons of booths to view are just some of the things you can do at the 2020 Home Show. Our popular informational seminars include seminars on lawn care, remodeling ideas, crime prevention, solar, and more. Our informational seminars are a great way to learn about products and services offered by our local builders and associates. Advance tickets for the event can be purchased for $2.00 at any Eglin Federal Credit Union branch locations beginning in February. You can also buy your tickets at the door for $5.00. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Those attendees with military IDs receive $1.00 off of your ticket price at the door. The monies earned by the tickets sold for the event, is used for the BIA’s community affairs projects as well as our scholarship funds. Previous funds were used to build an addition on a home to keep foster siblings together, build a new deck for the Horizon Center, build a fence at the Science Center, and so much more! This year, Okaloosa $aves will be at the BIA Home Show on Saturday February 22nd to display their Piggy Bank contest entries for public judging. Children between the ages of 5-18 decorate their homemade piggy banks and have the chance to win up to $100! Be sure to stop by the Okaloosa $aves table to vote for your favorite piggy bank. Youth bank entry winners will be announced on February 22nd and will receive cash awards. 8

NEWS MAKERS

A DAY OF GIVING Harbor Docks 25th Annual Thanksgiving Day Feast benefitting Destin Harvest and Okaloosa Habitat raised $23,000 feeding 2,597 November 28th! A special thanks to Harbor Docks, all of those who served, and all that came to feast and donate! Along with the traditional sit-down meal, The American Lunch Food Truck, owned by Chatham Morgan, provided to-go meals throughout the day. The American Lunch Truck, supported by local restaurants, serves free lunches to those in need around the community throughout the year.

PRYOR MIDDLE SCHOOL

Gets A Construction Curriculum Janson Thomas (Lowe’s manager) and Willie Rozofsky surprised Mr. Greg Rynearson, carpentry teacher at Pryor Middle School, by delivering carpentry equipment to the new Construction program at Pryor Middle School. Lowe’s generously donated equipment for the new program. The students were so excited to see all the new equipment being delivered. Jennifer Castro-Morales squealed with excitement when she saw all the tools coming into the classroom. “Wow! This donation means so much to us as students. I took this class because my father is in construction, and I like to help him,” stated Jennifer. She continued by saying, “We now have the same tools he has! I cannot wait to show him what I can build.” Lowe’s support comes at a time when the skilled trade industry is experiencing a rapidly declining workforce and the need for training the future workforce is critical. The equipment donated will allow students to learn construction standards and OSHA safe work procedures using industry standard tools. One of the first lessons in which the students participated during their carpentry class was how to measure accurately. Using the measuring tapes provided by Lowe’s, Mr. Rynearson required students to measure blocks of wood (down to the 8th of an inch) located throughout the room. After the activity was complete, 90% of students were successful in determining measurements. “I cannot thank Lowe’s enough for this incredible donation,” says teacher Greg Rynearson. “This will enable our students to build full size projects in a controlled learning environment using the exact tools they would find on any construction project anywhere in the United States.” This partnership is important in helping address the growing demand for skilled workers across our district and throughout our state. This program provides students with hands-on experience using skills that make a difference in the futures of our students. Choctawhatchee High School will also begin a Construction Curriculum beginning in 2020. 14

RECOGNITION

Okaloosa Gas District DONATES to United Way Emerald Coast Okaloosa Gas District donated over 300 coats to United Way Emerald Coast Wednesday, December 11 during the Niceville Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce monthly breakfast. The donation directly supports United Way’s annual Coats for Kids campaign, which aims to provide a warm coat to every child in need throughout Okaloosa and Walton counties during the holiday season. Unseasonably warm temperatures earlier this winter decreased the amount of donations usually received by this point in the campaign. The Coats for Kids mission is to share the warmth and ensure every child in Okaloosa and Walton counties who needs a winter coat receives one. “Okaloosa Gas District wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of our community, customers, and employees. This donation is a small part of our obligation to give back to the communities we serve daily” said Gordon King, CEO, Okaloosa Gas District. The coats are delivered primarily through school districts, but also churches and other non-profit agencies that work with children. “For families experiencing financial hardship, a warm coat can be considered a luxury item. We are grateful for our partners like Okaloosa Gas District, who are driven to help our local community and willing to make a difference” stated Kelly Jasen, CEO, United Way Emerald Coast. “Thanks to their generous efforts, hundreds of people will receive the gift of warmth this year! We appreciate their community spirit and look forward to distributing this amazing collection of coats on their behalf ” continued Jasen.
