THE OVERLAKE SCHOOL 2023 – 24 ANNUAL REPORT

THE OVERLAKE SCHOOL 2023 – 24 ANNUAL REPORT
Warner
Dear Overlake Community,
As the newest Head Owl of The Overlake School, I want to take a moment to express my deep appreciation to the board of trustees, faculty, staff, s tudents, alumni, and entire community who participated and contributed to making 2023–24 a wonderful school year. I also have much appreciation for Eric Temple, who served as our interim head of school last year.
The information highlighted in this 2023–24 Annual Report reflects the remarkable achievements and dedication of our community, which paved the way for me to begin my first year with joy and excitement for the dynamic future of Overlake. The School’s mission to champion students and their vast potential through engaging educational experiences in a diverse and inclusive community — resonates deeply with me. I am thrilled to join a school that is thoughtfully future-forward; not only for our students, but for our campus as well. Our mission is at the heart of what we do, and I am excited to work alongside all of you to further cultivate this inspiring environment.
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of our donors and volunteers. Every gift to the annual Overlake Fund, Senior Class Legacy Fund, and Owls Night Out event makes a meaningful difference to all our students, educators, and programs. The ongoing success of the Doors to Discovery capital campaign also signals the strength of our collective vision. The completed Whitten Math & Sciences Center is a thriving hub for classes, new curriculum offerings in the innovative Idea Lab, and a new home for our Robotics teams. Financial aid endowment more than tripled to expand our commitment to socioeconomic diversity. And the upcoming Student & Community Center will provide our students with much-needed spaces to collaborate, congregate, and celebrate with each other. You can read more about this transformational new building and our final year of the capital campaign on page 22.
Thank you again for all that you do for Overlake. Together, guided by our mission and vision, we will continue to prepare students to make a difference in the world.
With gratitude,
Gretchen Warner Head of School

Our Overlake Fund theme for the year was We Are Overlake, and thanks to our wonderful community for supporting our Owls, they thrived! We are especially grateful to each and every donor who supported the Overlake Fund during the 2023–24 school year. The Overlake Fund once again raised more than $1 million with 100% faculty and staff, Board of Trustees, Parent Guardian Executive Committee, as well as an inspiring 90% parent/guardian participation.
The Overlake Fund directly benefits all of our students, teachers, and programs, and touches every aspect of the school. We hope you enjoy these uplifting and inspiring examples of what you made possible throughout the school year. Thank you so very much from all of us at Overlake.
• Faculty benefited from a variety of professional development opportunities throughout the year. Science Department Chair Janet Jones received her Master’s Degree in Education in Learning, Design, and Technology through Penn State University to strengthen her practice and better integrate technology throughout the science curriculum to help students learn more effectively.
• A rts Department Chair Erin Gabriel attended the Washington Music Educators conference with sessions including building and maintaining choral programs, innovative and fresh rehearsal strategies, and choral inclusivity. Faculty member Kristina Rey also attended a summer institute for AP Music Theory, which resulted in better instruction, curated activities and projects, and curriculum mapping in preparation for students to take the AP exam.
World Languages faculty Briana Titus attended the American Classical League’s annual conference, including a session on the new AP curriculum for Latin.
• Faculty and staff, including Krishna Davda, Susan Essex, Samantha Hillyer (’01), and Laura Triebold, attended Yale
University’s RULER Training in Social Emotional Learning, the best-in-class offering to ensure we do everything we can to support students’ mental health.
• Director of Outdoor Education José González served on the steering committee and presented at the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Risk Management Conference, elevating and establishing Overlake as an industry expert in the outdoor education field.
• Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Joey Swidler attended the National Strength & Conditioning Association c onference with workshops like Common Knee Injuries in Youth Athletes and Using Kinetic Analysis to Inform Training Prescription to keep our student-athletes healthy and prevent injuries.
• Five new courses were introduced in the Upper School for the first time ever, including Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, Business DECA, Issues in Science Fiction Film, and History of Rock and Roll.
• The science curriculum was aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, which sets content expectations for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. For example, in 9th grade biology, Life on our Planet,
• Two vocalists from Apollo5, in town during their international tour, visited the Chamber Choir class for a workshop on vowel placement, tonality, rhythm exercises, and vocal unity, in preparation of their performance together with other local high schools at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle.
• The Middle School and Upper School choirs also performed at Seattle Pro Musica’s Journey of Song concert. Beforehand, professional composer Eric Tuari visited classes to help them prepare.
• The Fulton Performing Arts Center got some much-needed upgrades in the Production Booth, replacing all the old analog audio gear and bringing Overlake into the modern digital era.
students engage in the practices of science to explore life at different scales, from the chemistry of the smallest biological molecules to the global flow of matter and energy. Students explore the relationship between molecular and cellular structures of organisms and their life functions, the transmission of traits across generations, the role of evolution in driving biodiversity, and the interdependent relationships between living things and Earth’s environment.
• In 8th grade Social Studies, students analyzed the US Constitution in detail and learned about what each government’s branch does, as well as whether the power between the branches is balanced and why. They analyzed the Supreme Court by looking at landmark cases throughout history and explored how cases and decisions have affected society. They also reviewed the Bill of Rights and the several amendments to learn about civic rights and responsibilities.
• For the second year, Overlake hosted ROOST: Rising Overlake Owls Starter Training to prepare new incoming 9th graders in their transition to Overlake. Topics included C anvas, time management, support services, and more. It has been a great way for students new to Overlake to understand how to navigate and be successful in the Upper School.
• In addition to all the amazing Middle School and Upper School orchestra, band, and choir concerts, several theater productions showcased the incredible talents of our students, including the 5th/6th grade musical, School House Rock, Jr., 7th/8th grade play Ghostlight, Upper School musical Into the Woods, and Upper School play LOVE/SICK.
or the first time, a new Hoop League was launched for fifth graders and any other Middle Schoolers not part of an interscholastic team. The practice sessions for both boys and girls included skill work and small-sided games, allowing kids of any skill to play basketball and increase their basketball
verlake was awarded “The Champion of Champions” for our 2023-24 performances on the fields, courts, and courses, as we finished #1 in our classification (1A) in the State of Washington.
• Highlights for the year included:
° Boys Soccer won the State Championship, beating the Royal 1-0 at Renton Memorial Stadium. This was the second championship for Head Coach Scott Lane (first was in 2018) and he was named the State Coach of the Year. Overlake also won the Emerald Sound Conference title with a 10-1-1 league record.
° Girls Tennis repeated as State Champions. Sarina Z. (’27) won the State Singles Championship, and Sylvia Lou (’24) and Sharon Z. (’25) won their second consecutive State Doubles title. Sadie Wickham (’24) and Sae K. (’26) finished 4th at State. The Owls claimed another Emerald Sound Conference title and District title as well.
° B aseball won our first ever State Championship in walk-off fashion in the title game, 3–2 over the Meridian Trojans in Bellingham. Head Coach Mike Davidson, a veteran of 23 seasons at the helm, saw the team punch their ticket to the finals as his son, Hank D. (’26) scored the winning run in the semifinal. Coach D was also named State Coach of the Year.
° Girls Golf cruised to their State Title behind a solid cast of veterans (2nd in State in 2023) and a standout freshman, Kendria W. (’27). Kendria ran away from the rest of the field,
notching her fist individual State Title, and first for Overlake since Stephanie Wei in 2001. Co-Coaches Shawn FarmerSese and Justin Prohn are a lethal combination in the golf ranks.
° Boys Tennis was great again, claiming the District Championship, and sending Rishi S. (’26) to State, where he fought his way to a 3rd place finish.
° Boys Ultimate returned to State for the first time since 2014, under new Head Coach Ben Ostman.
° Boys Cross Country was led by three of our best runners ever — Keith Hunter (’24), Jack Kehoe (’24), and Aleksy Umbers (’24) — all seniors, who all ran in State for the final time.
° Girls Cross Country was able to get back to State as a team again and had four qualifiers of their own — Sarah Guralnick (’24) (who set the 5K school record), Sae K. (’26), Talia Willson (’24), and Avani B. (’25).
° Boys Golf had one golfer, Anthony C. (’25), make it to State.
° O ther Team Awards:
- ESC Team Sportsmanship: Girls Soccer; Girls Basketball; Boys Basketball; and Girls Golf.
- ESC Coach of the Year: Rick Nelson (Girls Basketball); Jeff Loranger (Girls Tennis); Scott Lane (Boys Soccer); and Shawn Farmer-Sese (Girls Golf).
- A nd kudos to the many successful Owl coaches who also had great seasons and dedication to their kids this year.
• PREP, a new strength and conditioning class, was launched to help beginners learn critical movement foundations and proper training techniques, and those more advanced to learn how to progress their training safely and effectively. Students also had the opportunity to earn a Varsity letter through their participation in the course.
• Thanks to our Upper School ASB President Evan Spinner (’24), Owls Nest was brought back for the first time since COVID-19. Middle School and Upper School advisories were paired together for the year with designated times to connect and have fun together. Doing so forged memories and was a reminder of how unique and fortunate we are to be a school with grades five through twelve.
• Overlake’s signature Outdoor Education program provided unique opportunities for students to experience our inspiring environment. A few of the many offerings included kayaking on the Snoqualmie River, paddleboarding at Deception Pass, sailing with the Center for Wooden Boats, hiking and snowshoeing near Mt. Ranier, as well as an Odyssey challenge course, bike class at Duthie Hill Mountain Bike Park, a summit hike to Silver Peak, and much more.
• For the first time ever, Overlake hosted a Middle School Design Day Challenge in the Whitten Math & Sciences Center’s Idea Lab. Students were given four possibilities, collaborated and iterated their prototypes, then pitched their ideas a la Shark Tank in Fulton. So many creative projects were presented as they designed: 1) A playground accessible
to all children; 2) Food waste reduction in the Campus Center; 3) A music class for hearing impaired students; or 4) An activity for Overlake PE that emphasize collaboration and cooperation instead of competition.
• The DECA club and Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and DECA class launched a new custom t-shirt service.
• Thank you to the HOSA Club for hosting a school blood drive with Bloodworks Northwest in January. Every pint made a difference.
• To raise awareness for seasonal depression and to spread positivity in its wake, Overlake’s Forefront Club and The Overlake Hoot r an a photography contest featuring Overlake community work. The prompt was as follows: find or take a photo inspired by what you believe makes life worth living. Forefront also organized friendship bracelets, card making, and flower-a-grams for students to share their appreciation and gratitude for one another.
• For the first time ever, a competitive Middle School Robotics Team was launched. Along with the three Upper School teams, they competed at the First Tech Interleague Championship, and out of 31 teams, our 8–12 grade teams finished 1st and 4th! As a result of this incredible performance, Overlake’s robot, affectionately known as 16965, moved on to the Washington State Championships.
• For the first time ever a Thespian Club was offered for students.
• C ongratulations to our 12 students who made it all the way to the National Speech & Debate Association competition this year (only 2% of speech and debate students qualify for nationals in the US). Kudos to Fiona Li (’24) who received a speaker award for placing 13th out of almost 1,000 speakers in Worlds School Debate, competing against teams across the US and seven other countries, and to Avery Z. (’26), who advanced to the semifinals in Big Questions (top 4) and got a trophy and scholarship.
• Participation in Quiz Bowl is also popular, and this year students went to Chicago to compete in the Small School National Tournament and Middle School National Tournament.
• Spring Service Day took every student off campus. For example, sixth graders went to two local farms, Food Bank Farm Snohomish and Oxbow Farm in Carnation.
• The Overlake Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) clubs, launched an Overlake TED Speaker Series, hosting workshops featuring professionals from innovating AI/ML startups and companies about how AI works and how it is being applied in the real world in areas like robotics.
• In May, the Middle School Writer’s Symposium welcomed award-winning author Maggie Tokuda-Hall (books include Also an Octopus; The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea; Squad; and Love in the Library ). She did several workshops with fifth and sixth graders, held an All-Middle School presentation, and hosted an open lunch with students in the Alumni Room.
hank you to FBI agent Stefanie Hanley for presenting to our seventh and eighth graders on how to stay safe from yberbullying, cyberharassment, and other internet crimes.
he Upper School Writer’s Symposium, one of our longer and most treasured traditions, welcomed Pulitzer Prizewinning author Hua Hsu. His memoir, Stay True, was also a Top 10 Book of the Year at The New York Times and was named a Best Book of the Year at TIME, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and more. In addition to an Upper School assembly, he hosted two smaller writing workshops with students.
• The Idea Lab welcomed David Allais, an internationally known developer of barcoding, automatic identification, and data capture technology, to speak with students.
The Overlake Fund makes a meaningful and positive impact each school year, benefitting all our students, teachers, and programs, and providing a critical 5% of our annual operating budget. This year’s Owls Night Out paddle raise also helped support faculty/staff professional development, further strengthening Overlake Fund resources for this important program. Thank you again to our wonderful community, including our current and alumni families, faculty, staff, trustees, grandparents, students, alums, and friends for your deeply inspiring support.

The Senior Class Legacy Fund tradition began with the Class of 2014 as a way to give back to Overlake and establish a lasting legacy. Gifts to the Senior Class Legacy Fund are restricted to the school’s endowment for financial aid, furthering our commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.
Many thanks to the following donors for their meaningful gifts to their Senior Class Legacy Fund during the 2023–24 school year. Congratulations to everyone in the Class of 2024 who raised an inspiring $136,000+ with 80% parent/guardian participation.

Building a strong endowment is the best way to ensure that today’s students, as well as future generations, benefit from Overlake’s exceptional educational environment and diverse and inclusive community. The principal of Overlake’s endowment is never spent, while the interest accrued on these funds serve as a perpetual source of income for our annual operating budget.
We are deeply grateful to the following donors who supported Overlake’s endowment during the 2023–24 school year.
Donations to Overlake’s unrestricted endowment enable the school to direct resources where they are most needed.
Burke & Dolores Gibson

collaborate, and celebrate
Construction is underway on Overlake’s new 8,000-square-foot Student & Community Center, which will open this summer!
The Student & Community Center perfectly complements the Whitten Math & Sciences Center, which opened in 2021. Whitten provides the tools to educate students in math, science, and computer science, while the Student & Community Center is designed to foster the social and collaborative skills graduates need to succeed in an increasingly integrated world.
The centerpiece of the Student & Community Center will be a multipurpose space that can seat 250 people. With a dedicated lobby and pre-function area, we will be able to host a full array of events, meetings, and gatherings that aren’t possible today.
Our new Student & Community Center is more than just a building. It is a place where students can learn, grow, and connect with each other and the world.
We look forward to inviting you to hard hat tours and building opening celebrations in 2025!

This is the final year of fundraising for our ambitious Doors to Discovery capital campaign, which launched in 2017–18 and completed the Whitten Math & Sciences C enter, tripled our financial aid endowment, and is now constructing the new Student & Community Center. This is the largest capital campaign in the school’s history — thank you for everyone who has stepped up to invest in Overlake’s future!
A s of press time, we have raised more than $5.7 million toward the Student & Community Center with a goal to raise another $1 million or more by June 2025.
Please join us! Director of Development Brisen Brady is happy to facilitate your giving or answer any questions you may have. Please contact her at bbrady@overlake.org or 425-868-1000. You may also scan this QR code to make a donation or multi-year pledge today.
All donors, at every level, will be included on the donor recognition wall located in the Whitten Math & Sciences Center lobby.
Specific naming opportunities in the Student & Community Center include:
• Student & Community Center facility: $5 million
• Discovery Hall (multipurpose room): $3 million
• Entry & Lobby: $1 million
• Admin Wing: $1 million
• Conference Room: $250,000
We are honored to acknowledge our dedicated and long-standing donors who have generously supported the school for five consecutive years or more, including the 2023–24 school year. The name Parliament is defined as a group of Owls or can represent many people coming together to help make a community better. Both interpretations of the word seemed to be the perfect tribute for our steadfast supporters.

Owls Night Out at the Bellevue Arts Museum brought our community together for an incredible celebration! Replete with delicious food, fabulous company, fun entertainment, amazing raffles, a welcome by incoming Head O wl Gretchen Warner, and a special fund-a-need opportunity to support faculty/staff professional development, a wonderful time was had by all.
A very special thanks to our Co-Chairs Lisa Golden and Kerri Scott, who ensured that this year’s Owls Night Out was a memorable and meaningful evening. And many thanks to Mags Hanaoka for being our Raffle Chair extraordinaire. We couldn’t have done it without you!
We also extend our deepest thanks to the following companies and families whose contributions helped offset the expenses and allowed us to invite our entire faculty and staff community to participate.
