In the six months or so that I have been your Interim Head Owl (as of press time), I continue to find more and more respect, inspiration, and admiration for all that makes Overlake such an amazing school. The incredibly dedicated faculty and staff, remarkably curious and talented students, robust academic and cocurricular opportunities, and wonderful community all combine to make Overlake a truly special place with a unique culture. As I immerse myself at Overlake with each passing day, it is abundantly clear that our community’s enduring spirit and collaborative efforts have been pivotal in shaping the path of progress for Overlake for the last half-century, and last year was no exception. The 2022–23 school year was indeed marked by extraordinary efforts from all of you, especially as the school embraced a head transition. To our donors, thank you for your generous contributions. Each and every donation, at every level, made a meaningful and positive difference. Our programs and all that we do for students and teachers would also not be possible without our amazing Overlake volunteers. Special thanks to Board President Maurice Carson for his leadership, Parent Guardian Association President Justin Marks for his tireless dedication and commitment to the school, Alumni Board President Kate Berry (’08) for her stewardship of our 3,000+ alums, and all our many volunteers who helped in innumerable ways. In addition, I would especially like to thank our 2022–23 Overlake Fund Co-Chairs Anouk Pape and Sara Womack for their wonderful, positive leadership, and all the volunteers who helped with the campaign. Thanks to their collective effort, more than $1,100,000 was raised to benefit all our students, faculty, and programs — an incredible achievement. The Senior Class of 2023 Legacy Fund, led by Shuang Hou and Elizabeth Huang, also raised an inspiring $167,000 for our financial aid endowment to strengthen accessibility for generations of future Owls. To all the donors who honored Head of School Matt Horvat’s 11-year tenure by establishing

the Matt Horvat Scholarship Endowment Fund, thank you so very much for supporting financial aid and helping to make the dream of an Overlake education possible for more families. Our ambitious Doors to Discovery capital campaign continued to make progress, thanks to our wonderful Campaign Steering Committee, led by our champion Tanya Vail last year. We have raised more than $26 million (and counting!) toward our overall $35 million goal. We are now focusing on our final building project for the campaign, a new Student & Community Center that will equip students with the 21st century learning skills — critical thinking, collaboration, communication — to help them thrive in college and beyond. You can learn more about this transformational project on page 24. Owls Night Out took place at Sparkman Cellars Winery in March and was a very fun and memorable evening. Many thanks to Co-Chairs Malia Foley, Manizeh Pirzada, and Kerri Scott for all that they did to make it such a successful and wonderful community builder. I would like to thank you for welcoming me to Overlake and allowing me to continue moving the school forward in preparation for incoming Head of School Gretchen Warner. It is an honor to be your Head Owl for this year and to be a part of the school’s remarkable history. I hope you enjoy reading the many highlights included throughout our 2022–23 Annual Report. The Overlake Fund Making a Positive Difference
Our Overlake Fund theme for the year was Owl In for Overlake, and thanks to our wonderful community’s support of our Owls, they thrived! We are especially grateful to each and every donor who supported the Overlake Fund during the 2022–23 school year. The Overlake Fund raised $1.1 million (the most ever) with 100% faculty and staff, Board of Trustees, Parent Guardian Association Executive Committee participation, as well as an inspiring 93% parent/guardian participation. The Overlake Fund directly benefits all our students, teachers, and programs, and strengthens every aspect of the school. We hope you enjoy these uplifting and inspiring examples of what you made possible, not only on our campus but also in the broader community, throughout the school year. Thank you so very much from all of us at Overlake.
Teaching & Learning • Faculty benefited from a variety of professional development opportunities throughout the year. Upper School faculty Tina Proctor and Delano Lopez attended a conference on teaching AP English to develop new strategies and methods to improve instruction and student learning. All faculty attended the hybrid NWAIS Fall Educators Conference, “Thriving Together,” which had a variety of workshops to help teachers build their students’ executive functioning skills, resilience, compassion, and more as schools continued to recover from previous distance learning and Covid-19. • Kim Stevens, Overlake's Athletic Trainer, and Mike Fine, Middle School Athletic Director, were invited to the Far West Athletic Trainers Association district meeting in Hawaii to present information on Overlake's very successful sudden cardiac arrest screenings for students so other schools could learn about our best practices. • Kudos to Speech & Debate coach and faculty Robin Monteith on receiving the District Coach of the Year Award from the National Forensic League! Speech & Debate now begins with a Middle School elective class, where students are able to hone their skills as they prepare for the Upper School level. Students competed nationally, including at the prestigious Tournament of Champions event in Kentucky where Ellie H. ('24) earned a semi-finalist finish in Original Oratory Speaking. Members of the team also went to Minnesota for the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions, followed by the National Speech & Debate Tournament. Go Speech & Debate Owls! • Two new Upper School electives were offered for the first time ever. Reproductive Biology explored evolution, physiology, and development in humans, animals, and plants, with a focus on hormones that shape brains and bodies. Students engaged in a variety of laboratory and research projects, such as following
the journey of a single egg from fertilization to birth. The new Ethnic Studies course engaged students in the study of the historical and current socio-cultural experiences of racial and ethnic groups in the United States and how they have been shaped by social, legal, and economic systems over time. • In 7th grade Social Studies, students learned where every country on earth is located, building their competencies as global citizens. • In 8th grade English, students studied Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, analyzing universal themes around relationships, conflicts, and societies. • As part of the Global Religions unit in 9th grade World History, a panel of seven seniors from four different religious backgrounds spoke to freshmen in Fulton, further increasing awareness and empathy of different faiths.

THE OVERLAKE FUND (continued) • Congratulations to 9th grade English faculty Jenni Baldwin, honored with the University of Chicago’s Outstanding Educator Award. This honor is bestowed on faculty who have made a difference to freshmen now at the University of Chicago. Nine years ago, Jenni was also nominated by Overlake students and won Teacher of the Year for Redmond — thank you, Jenni, for all that you do for our Owls. • For more than 20 years at Overlake, AP Chemistry students have held a fudge-making contest as part of their hands-on investigation into solution chemistry, and over the last 15 years no one was a more faithful attendant than departing Upper School Head Gerald Buhaly, so the chemistry students officially named the contest “The Gerald Buhaly Honorary Fudge-Making Contest.” Faculty and staff were invited to taste chemistry in action, support the students in their chemistry efforts, and honor Gerald’s last time as a judge. • The Science Department also hosted a fun celebration for national Pi Day (on March 14, naturally!), where students brought dozens of baked pies for a delicious treat. • For the first time ever, Overlake launched ROOST: Rising Overlake Owl Starter Training. Many thanks to faculty member Ashley Powel who created the program. The purpose of ROOST is to prepare new incoming 9th grade students both socially and academically for a smooth transition to Overlake’s Upper School. ROOST is designed as a week-long forensics case that students work together to solve. Each aspect of the investigation gives them a chance to learn and practice key
academic skills and meet important people who will help them on their Overlake journey. As they solve the case, they also get to know each other socially so they will see a friendly face on campus when school starts. • The entire 9th grade class started the new year with a J Term (J stands for January), a brand-new program established to help them reset and review essential skills while also continuing to connect as a class. They spent time learning about time management and prioritization, digital citizenship, and emotional well-being. The Associated Student Body (ASB) led activities like Jeopardy, capture the flag, and an exciting gingerbread decorating contest.
Arts • The Fulton Performing Arts Center got some much-needed upgrades, including a new digital mixing board and audio visual technology to improve the annual plays and musical productions. • The Upper School Art Club gave a makeover to a special sculpture of The Pig (aka “Piggy Stardust”) that was lent to us from The Fisher House, a nonprofit that houses families of veterans whose loved ones are in the VA hospital. You can see Piggy Stardust and learn more about all the amazing arts activities by following our Instagram account @overlakearts. • The 7th/8th grade play featured Struggles, an award-winning, poignant drama, and An Absolutely True Story As Told By a Bunch of Lying Liars, a comedy. • The Upper School Advanced Theater class produced Macbeth, with an innovative casting set in a 1920s prohibition speakeasy. • The All-School Musical, Matilda, was not to be missed, showcasing incredibly talented students from grades 5 through 12 who put on a spectacular production. • The Overlake String Orchestra spring concert featured an amazing ensemble of 42 Overlake students from every grade level. You can listen to the talented orchestra here: https:// youtu.be/TDzNVNPQUQE • For the first time in more than three years (due to Covid-19), students traveled to California for the WorldStrides Heritage music festival in Anaheim, combined with the Disney Magic Music Days performance experience. More than 100 students from the String Orchestra, Concert and Chamber Choirs, and Concert Band had an amazing adventure. • Local photographer Nate Gowd, who has also been featured on the cover of Time magazine, visited the Photography 1 class and shared his real-life experiences in photojournalism. • ArtsFest returned in the spring and was a wonderful communitybuilding event. It also included the grand opening of a Free Little Student Art Gallery, located outside the Art Barn. Anyone

- The combined Baseball team with Bear Creek (the Growls) won their first Bi-District Championship and advanced to the State tournament. - Girls’ Golf placed second in the league tournament, Bi-Districts, and State. Congrats to Coach of the Year Shawn Farmer-Sese. - And kudos to the many successful Owl coaches who also had great seasons and dedication to their kids this year.

Athletics • Upper School Athletics once again had a banner year, finishing #3 overall in State and #1 in Girls’ Sports! Additional highlights include: - Girls’ Soccer were quarterfinalists in the State Tournament and Head Coach Sally Goodspeed was once again the Emerald Sound Conference (ESC) Coach of the Year. - Girls’ and Boys’ Cross Country posted the finest seasons in their programs’ history. The boys placed fifth and the girls second at the State Championship Meet in Pasco. Alum Colton Umberger (’14) was named the Girls’ Coach of the Year in the ESC. - Boys’ Golf competed well on the course, sending two golfers to State, and earning Justin Prohn the ESC Golf Coach of the Year award. - Boys’ Tennis went undefeated in league, earning both the ESC Championship and the Bi-District title as well. Coach Jeff Loranger was named ESC Tennis Coach of the Year. - Boys’ Basketball had a wonderful season, finishing sixth in the State Tournament in only their fourth-ever trip. Showing that great teams can also be great role models, the team won the ESC Sportsmanship Award. - Girls’ Basketball had a great season under first-year Head Coach Rick Nelson, advancing to the Bi-District finals. These Owls were classy as well, earning the ESC Sportsmanship Award. - Boys’ Soccer reached the State Championship game and claimed the ESC Sportsmanship Award. - Girls’ Tennis went undefeated in conference play and won the Team State Championship. At the State Tournament in Yakima, Sarina Z. (’26) finished fourth in singles play, and Sylvia L. (’24) and Sharon Z. (’25) won the doubles State title.
• The popular O-League for Middle Schoolers returned for another year. This optional, complimentary program was such a great success last year that it was expanded from basketball and volleyball to include soccer and ultimate frisbee. The O-League was designed to help students develop as athletes, grow their game, learn skills, and play with other Owl athletes in a fun and supportive environment under the dedicated attention of varsity-level coaches. • Over the summer, a new Sports Performance program was introduced in the Fitness Center. The session was led by coaches for all Overlake student athletes (or aspiring athletes in grades 7–12) regardless of sport, and the daily programming was coordinated with our athletic trainer, Kim Stevens, to include injury prevention exercises based on the most common injuries seen in each sport. Overlake alums, faculty, and staff were also invited to join the program. • A new Open Floor was introduced in the Fitness Center as a supervised time period in which students and employees could freely utilize the space under the guidance of our certified Head Strength & Conditioning Coach, Joey Swidler, for 45minute afternoon sessions to increase their well-being, health, and fitness.
Beyond the Classroom • Service Day in October was all about stewarding our campus. Students extracted blackberry roots, mulched and graveled trails, designed artistic and informative botanical signs, carried about 2,000 plants up a hill, and started planting a beautiful array of native vegetation to cover our hillsides for years and years to come. • Spring Service Day took every student off campus. From spending time at community farms planting squash, to testing water for salmon recovery efforts in our watersheds, pulling invasive plants from greenbelt areas, or organizing food pantry items, students were able to partner with and learn more about the various organizations that are helping people, plants, and animals in our region. • Overlake’s Outdoor Education program is an amazing opportunity to help students experience this incredible area. Local trips included a trail work party with the Washington

A group of Upper School students also took a kayaking trip down the Sammamish River, where the group not only navigated the waters, but set up camp along the shores with some bocce ball and other fun, outdoor activities. • ASB brought back The Overlake Show after a Covid-induced break. Students enjoyed a variety of acts including comedy and a performance by our awesome student rock band, CASTL.
Learning & Technology team installed an additional 35 speakers in the Humanities and 5th/6th Buildings, Technology & Language Center, Field House, and Gym. The total number of speakers is now over 100 in addition to the classroom phones. • The school replaced three school buses to make sure our transportation fleet was in tip-top shape for bringing students to and from school, games, field trips, and more.
• An enterprising group of students spent months (including over the summer) to design, build, program, and test a robot to compete in November’s FIRST Tech Challenge in Robotics.

Speakers & Symposiums
• In the fall, Flight of the Owls brought our community together for a 5K fun run through the campus’ trails. Hootie cheered everyone on too!
• The student-led Science Symposium took place in April and featured four incredible leaders: 1) Dr. Ajoke Sobanjo-ter Meulen, a Senior Program Officer with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation where she led the foundation’s maternal immunization initiative; 2) Dr. Emma Spiro, an Associate Professor and Data Science Fellow at the University of Washington; 3) Dr. Gwen Hanson, a local family medicine doctor in Bellevue and leader of the Bellevue chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby; and 4) Shehzad Mevawalla, a director at Amazon responsible for automatic speech recognition, speaker recognition, and paralinguistics in Alexa world-wide. It was an amazing opportunity for our students to hear directly from industry leaders.
Three important traditions continued in honor of the school’s 55th anniversary!
• In the winter, Dark Day, another long-held tradition started by Head of School Dean Palmer in the 1970s, brought everyone together at the Family Fun Center in Tukwila for a day of fun and games. • In the spring, we honored a group of instrumental people as part of our Founders Day, including Caspar Clarke, Greg Foster (’81), David & Amy Fulton, Myra Goetz Gamburg-Baker, Matt Horvat, Betty Newell, Cebert Noonan (’79), Carol O’Donnell, and Ellen Zarter. Thank you to all these incredibly important people who shaped Overlake’s history.
• In April, the Middle School Writer’s Symposium welcomed author Donna Barba Higuera. She did several workshops with 7th grade students who had read her book, The Last Cuentista, held a presentation for the entire Middle School, and hosted an open lunch with students in the Alumni Room. • The Upper School Writer’s Symposium, one of our longer and most treasured traditions, featured poet Khalisa Rae Thompson. Khalisa spoke to the entire Upper School community in Fulton and held smaller workshops throughout the day. It was a great chance for students to meet someone whose work they have read and discussed in classes, and the workshops provided a chance for students to try new writing strategies and techniques in small groups with the visitng author. • Students in the Entrepreneurship Club organized a speaker series for Upper School students to learn from successful business leaders. One such speaker was Abhisht Arora, Head of Corporate Strategy of Zoom, an incredible opportunity to hear from such an innovative and industry pioneer.

Faculty and Staff Professional Development Endowment Fund Overlake established this fund in 1998. The fund supports faculty and staff professional growth through the school’s sabbatical program, continuing education, workshops, conferences, and advanced degrees. Foreign Exchange Program Endowment Fund Income from this fund supports the school’s foreign exchange programs with schools abroad. Fries Family Scholarship Endowment Fund Robert Fries and Debra Dahlen, along with their children Annaliese (’14), Galileo (’19), and Morgan, established this fund in honor of Nola M. Moore, MD in 2022, with the purpose to provide an annual need-based scholarship for a student. Gibson Scholarship Endowment Fund Bruce and Lynn Gibson, along with their children Grant (’14) and Burke, established this fund in 2019 to provide annual, ongoing need-based scholarships for students in the sixth through twelfth grades of African American heritage. James Reber Callaghan Scholarship Endowment Fund Jim Callaghan was essential to sustaining Overlake in its early days, serving as President of the Board of Trustees, and providing experienced and expert leadership when the school needed it most. As the parent of five Owls, he knew first-hand what made the Overlake educational experience unique. His passing earlier this year prompted Kate Rabinowitz (’78) to make a contribution toward establishing a named fund in Jim's honor, and to encourage her peer Owls from the school's start-up era to join her in honoring his legacy. NAMED PROGRAM FUNDS
Named program funds offer generous donors the opportunity to create a fund that provides supplemental resources beyond the regular operating budget allocations. Program funds are used each year until they are fully spent. Trevor Brenden (’95) Project Week Scholarship Fund Dave and Krecia Brenden established this fund in 2003 in memory of their son Trevor (’95). The fund supports two Project Week scholarships annually for one Middle School student and one Upper School student who are receiving need-based financial aid. McDougall Family
Expert in Residence Fund This fund was created in 2010 during a paddle raise at the auction. It enables Overlake to bring inspiring experts in a given field or discipline to spend two to five days on campus engaging with students in classes, giving lessons, and sharing their knowledge with faculty and staff. In 2022–23, Natasha Singh, a nationally renowned expert on consent and healthy relationships, came to campus to educate students in these important topics. Francisco J. Grijalva Fund for Global Service & Music Trips Friends and family of Frank Grijalva, Overlake’s head of school from 1995 to 2012, established this fund in 2012 to provide need-based financial aid for Project Week students applying to a global service project or annual music travel trip.

A new, modern Student & Community Center is a valuable investment for our school, creating a learning environment that equips students for the future and inspires them to solve complex problems and make a difference in the world. The Student & Community Center will be a place for deeper engagement for our entire community of students, families, faculty, staff, and alumni. The centerpiece of the 8,000-square-foot facility will be a flexible, multipurpose space for students to learn, grow, and engage with each other and faculty. It will foster collaboration among teachers and departments and will bring all members of our community together for celebrations, presentations, programs, and more. It’s also a critically needed space for students to work on homework, form study groups, collaborate on group projects, and strengthen connections with peers and faculty. It can be configured in a variety of ways as well as seat 250 guests, and with a dedicated lobby and pre-function area, we will be able to host all kinds of offerings that aren’t possible today. The Center is more than just a building. It is a place that will foster the soft skills that are at the core of an Overlake education, including communication, collaboration, thoughtfulness, respect, empathy, curiosity, and resourcefulness, empowering students to succeed and thrive in college, work, and life.

OVERLAKE’S ANNUAL COMMUNITY CELEBRATION Owls Night Out at Sparkman Cellars Winery brought our community together to celebrate 55 years of Overlake! Alumni Engagement Program Once an Owl, always an Owl! Thanks to the leadership and efforts of the Alumni Board, we were able to bring alums together during the 2022–23 school year. Thank you to everyone who joined us and participated in the life of the school and engaged with us on social media. We are also grateful to all our alum donors who supported the school — your contributions make a meaningful and positive difference to all our students, faculty, and programs.
Holiday Happy Hour The annual Alumni Holiday Happy Hour took place on December 15, 2022, on campus, bringing together many alums as well as current and former faculty.
Celebration for Matt Horvat and Gerald Buhaly On June 4, many alums joined us for the community-wide celebration for Matt and retiring Upper School Head Gerald Buhaly.
New York and San Francisco Receptions We took Matt Horvat on a farewell tour to see alums, visiting New York in February at the Jungle Club in Chelsea and San Francisco in May at 25 Lusk. Lisa Orenstein joined the reception in New York and Sarah Fitzpatrick joined us in the Bay Area. It was a wonderful way for alums from coast to coast to gather and celebrate.

Distinguished Alumni Award On November 4, 2022, the fifth annual Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Allison Elliott Barto (’94) for her work as an engineer and a program director with Ball Aerospace, where she spent seven years working on the remarkable new Webb Space Telescope.
Grads Return Our annual Grads Return event took place on January 12, 2023. Many thanks to the eight alums who spoke virtually with all Upper School students to share their insights, advice, and lessons learned about their college search process and experiences at their respective schools.
Making a Life Day On April 13, 2023, the fifth annual Making a Life Day featured 10 alums who spoke virtually and in-person with Upper School students about a variety of careers including aviation, business, filmmaking, law, marketing, mechanical engineering, nonprofits, performing arts, software engineering, and more.
Alumni Speakers In November, Sahar Fathi (’01) was a featured speaker for IMPACT, Fearlessly Female, and Women of Color. Christian Fulghum (’77) also spoke with the Entrepreneurs Club.

2022 23 ANNUAL REPORT
All- School BBQ On September 10, 2022, more than 550 families, faculty, staff, and friends came to campus for the third annual All-School BBQ. We were so delighted to celebrate the start of the school year with everyone in person. There was a fun raffle for all the kids, and it was a wonderful event! Many thanks to the PGA for sponsoring this new tradition.
41st Annual Grandparents & Special Friends Day On April 17, 2023, 50 grandparents and special friends enjoyed a live performance by the Upper School Choir, attended class with their Owls, and commemorated their day with a reception in the Campus Center. The event was also in collaboration with ArtsFest, the annual celebration of the visual arts on campus. Thank you to everyone who joined us on our beautiful campus!
Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast On May 25, 2023, we recognized and feted all our amazing volunteers who went above and beyond last school year at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. Everyone received delicious macarons from Lady Yum, and in keeping with our time-honored tradition, volunteers with a graduating senior also received a single yellow rose. We are so grateful for our wonderful Owl community of volunteers!
