It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It is the Nanuet Mall rising from the dead! “Well, I don’t consider this a mall,” explained Ryan Hidalgo, the general manger of the Shops at Nanuet to news reporter Peter Haskell of WCBS 880 News. So what exactly is this new place that has become the topic of conversation for residents of Rockland County? “This is an open-air town center that has really kind of a different spin than a typical mall does,” Hidalgo responded. The Nanuet Mall, a familiar shopping center to many Rockland County residents that closed down in May 2008, has been transformed by Simon Malls into a lifestyle center entitled The Shops at Nanuet. Akiko Matsuda, writer for the Journal News, stated that “the shopping area, originally built in 1969 as the Nanuet Mall, has been undergoing a major rebuilding project to transform itself as a draw to those living in Rockland County and beyond.” According

to Simon in describing the function and mission statement of Simon Malls, “We’re all about lowering your level of stress and dreaming your level of sophistication into a redefined, daring level of confidence...Our malls are here to give you that place to travel to and explore, where you’re refining what you find into something envied.”

The shopping complex officially opened with a ribbon cutting on Oct. 10, 2013. The Shops at Nanuet is an outdoor mall that includes shops, restaurants, a fitness center and Regal Cinemas movie theater. Hidalgo said that The Shops at Nanuet “kind of replicates the Main Street of old but also kind of has great 21stcentury touches.” While the

Nanuet Mall’s popularity and economic prosperity declined with the opening of the Palisades mall in 1998, Hidalgo is very confident about the future of the mall. Matsuda stated, “As he gave reporters a preview tour, Ryan Hidalgo, the shopping center’s general manager, said he wouldn’t SEE SHOPS PAGE 2

MANAGING EDITOR

On the October 17, RCC had its own version of the gameshow Jeopardy. The event took place during Common Hour on Thursday. It was a fun and exciting event that drew about sixty people came to watch the game. The game was run in a similar fashion to the show but had a few tweaks: there were different rounds in which different people competed. Throughout each round, there were three players pitted against one another. There were four different categories to choose from. During the round one of our editors went to, the featured categories were Movies, Animals, Phrases and World History. These categories were not easy to answer, but the contestants did a wonderful job while participating in the game. Each question had a different value given to it (much like the cable show): the value of the questions ranged anywhere from 200 to 800 points. During the round our editor attended, the three players competing were Joey, Sabrina, and Rachel (last names were not disclosed to the audience). Each player was very competitive and all played extremely well. The competitors were very quick with their answers; it was a cutthroat competition. The audience was on the edge of their seats during the entire game. They remained enthusiastic and engaged, and intently following the competition as it progressed. While all the competitors were excellent, only one could win; that player was Sabrina. She crushed the competition and won by a massive 5400 points. In second place was Joey, who had 1800 points, and in

third place was Rachel; she had amassed 600 points. This particular round was extremely exciting and engaging, and was a great way to spend common hour if you had some extra time on your hands. Events like this happen at RCC throughout both the fall and spring

semester; RCC has many fun events you can attend throughout your school year. These events are a great way to get involved, such as the Halloween Costume Competition coming up soon this month, or the concert that is featuring the jazz musician Anat Cohen. There are movie screenings and events

such as “Walk With Me”, a fundraiser to raise awareness about domestic violence. There are also many lectures one can attend for the more scholarly among us. Either way, these events at RCC can help you get involved with the college and the community, and are what make RCC a great school to attend.

Government Shutdown Ends

Ian Quinn

News Editor

After 17 days of federal indecision, President Barack Obama signed into law a continuing resolution for the fiscal year of 2014, effectively bringing

the government shutdown to its eagerly awaited conclusion. The bill was passed by Congress on the Wednesday, October 16, and signed by the president the next morning. This bipartisan agreement was negotiated by Senate leaders Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), passing on a 285-144 vote in the House of Representatives, and a 81-18 vote in the Senate. On the following Thursday, federal workers who had been sequestered during the shutdown were instructed to return to work. Initially, the temporary closing of the federal government was caused by the passing of a continuing appropriations bill by the House that excluded funding for the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This bill was passed by the House and sent to the Senate on September 20. The Senate then proceeded to remove from the bill all measures that stripped funding from the Affordable Care Act, and passed it in its revised form on September 27. In return, the House reinstated their original measures adressing the ACA, and passed it again on the morning of September 29. President Obama and the Senate collectively refused to pass any bill stripped of the original provisions for the ACA. Reaching no compromise by the end of the day on September 30, the federal government was in part shut down due to the lack of a defined set of financial appropriations for the fiscal year of 2014. Throughout the course of the 17-day shutdown, the House of Representatives attempted to pass several piecemeal bills in order to partially reinstate funding for specific agencies of the federal government. Among these specified agencies were included: the Federal Emergency Management Agency,

the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, the Army Reserve, the Navy Reserve, the Air Force Reserve, the Marine Corps Reserve, the Army National Guard of the United States, the Coast Guard Reserve, the National Park Service, and the Smithsonian Institute. Those bills that would have provided tempor a r y funding for the aforementioned agencies passed the House with bipar tisan s u p p o r t . H o w e v e r , P r e s i d e n t Obama and the Democrat-led Senate rejected to consider any of these proposals. Their stated justification for this rejection was their belief that these piecemeal bills represented an attempt to reduce political pressure on the House by funding politically popular agencies, while ignoring other essential services. The conflict inevitably instilled much fear, anger, and apprehension into the minds of many American citizens. It also failed to accomplish what was originally intended by the House, for the bipartisan deal signed into law on October 16 made no significant changes to the appropriations for the ACA. This reality has led many to consider that the conflict was unproductive and politically irresponsible, effectively raising serious concern among

U.S. allies and creditors such as China. Though the conflict was initiated by the Republican-led House, not all belonging

to the party were in favor of such drastic measures. Senator John McCain (RAz.) stated: “It is one of the most shameful chapters I have seen in the years I’ve spent in the Senate.” Representative Charlie Dent (R-Pa.) stated in regard to the bipartisan resolution: “I’m genuinely pleased that cooler heads have finally prevailed.” The agreement will provide funding for the federal government in its entirety until January 15, and grant borrowing authority until February 7. Citizens hope that when this temporary resolution expires, the government will attempt to proceed more responsibly

News

in the future formation of a new federal budget. “It is my hope both parties will continue working together on a big deal with spending cuts and reforms to entitlements and the tax code so that we can give our markets and the American people the stability they need and deserve” said Senator Mark Kirk (R-Il.). As counter-productive and ill-conceived as this political episode may have been, it was not entirely unprecedented. While most Democrats actively support the ACA, Republicans and Independents tend not to favor the Act. Most polls indicate public support for health care reform in general, but opinions are less favorable regarding the specific policies of the ACA. The approval rating for the ACA is at 38.8 percent, with 48.8 percent who are opposed to the health care law, according a RealClearPolitics. com polling average. Though the conflict may have possessed precedent, in the opinion of most Americans it was not legitimately justifiable. From the start, president Obama and the Senate made it perfectly clear that they would not consider any continuing resolution that did not provide funding for the ACA. As a result of the proceedings, public opinion of Congress has inevitably declined, for many citizens perceived the ordeal to be futile, politically dysfunctional, and unnecessary (7 percent approval rating according to a Huffington Post publication on October 10). Given that the U.S. federal government has reached the verge of shutdown on 18 occasions since the year 1976, crisis driven politics is no new method of reaching compromise between the two parties. Hopefully, political leaders will begin to move away from this malpractice, lest we damage our economy, jeopardize our infrastructural well-being, or hinder the development of sound international relationships.

How to Enjoy the Weekend for Under $20 Danish L Mendonca

Contributing Writer

It’s Friday night, and you’re ready for this weekend. Unfortunately, you reached into your wallet only to find a $20 bill, and nothing more. You will probably think, “bummer.” Well, you would actually be quite wrong. These days, the economy is pulling everyone under and many businesses understand this. Since they would and will do anything and everything to keep you with them, there are some major deals going on. You just have to know where to look! Since we are all not cookie-cut molds of each other, this article may not be agreed upon by everyone, but it certainly is a good way to go by with only “$20 in you pocket.” First and foremost, just because the weekend is here, that doesn’t mean you HAVE to go out shopping and partying all night long. Which brings us to our first alternative: The Weekend Out

Even if you’re old enough, the club is out of the question. You might be able to get a cab there, but with the entry fee, the food and the drinks, a $20 bill simply isn’t going to cut it. Here are some cheaper alternatives: -Have a party at your home (bring the weekend in to you), and have the guests bring the food and drinks. You can spend very little on setting up! All you need is some good music and friends. -Drop in at a local class. You can check Meetup.com or your local stores or group meetings. There are drop-in meditation, yoga, or any kind of classes you may be into. Call around, they may even be free. -Go to a park or local river. Watch the stars and have a nighttime picnic with friends picnic. Do things we only hear about happening traditionally. Usually, we are so wrapped up in our technological lives, we forget the simple things in life. -Hiking would have to be something I consider most. It’s something that I’ve been doing since I was a little kid and I’ll be ready to go hiking at anytime! The Lazy Weekend

Sometimes we just feel like having a ‘me’ weekend. That’s perfect. Especially when you only have twenty bucks! You can still have a little fun at home though: -Order Netflix or go grab a movie at your local movie store. -Play some old video/computer games & listen to older music that reminds you of years past. -Get a $5 pizza and some ice cream -Catch up on reading and scope out the latest magazines. -Learn something new. -Read blogs and catch up by browsing on YouTube for the latest funny or shocking videos. -Paint, draw, play some music. Even if it’s not your element, break out of your daily routine. Switch things up a bit. The Girls/ Guys Weekend We all need them. Sometime just with our home boys/girls. It’s time for the big game/ chick flicks and delicious indulgences...on a budget of course! The Lovebirds Weekend We all need some time with our

significant other, but sometimes that can get pretty expensive. Here are a few ways

you can relax without stressing: -As always, movies are awesome. -Play a video game he chooses, or agree to play if you can pick one to rent. -Sit in and watch each other’s shows. ”I’ll watch Wife Swap if you watch WWE.” -Go to a park and swing. Yes, like children. -Walk to an ice cream shop; but don’t even think about that car with the air conditioning. -Go on a long drive through the back roads. Are you in the city? Explore a part you’ve never been together. That way when you guys discover a place that isn’t really mainstream, you guys can call it “our spot”. -Dedicate a “date” day for the weekend where you’re all about only each other. So now you have a few ideas on how

you can spend that $20 (or save it!). Though there are plenty of other solutions for spending (or saving) twenty dollars, these few were some of the bigger ideas for almost anyone to use. You can make a little bit of money go a long way, with the right resources. As mentioned earlier, you don’t really have to spend it just because you have it. In fact, another great way is by using whatever you have at home and m a k i ng something out of scrap or recycling. These activities can be really fun when tried out! Besides, it’s even more fun when you have friends come over and just have a good time. Enjoy!

My Nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize Daisy Moakley

Staff Writer

Alfred Nobel signed his third and last will on November 27 1895, at the SwedishNorwegian club in Paris. In his will he dictated that the whole of his remaining realizable estate should be used to endow “prizes to those who during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest gift to mankind.” Ninety-four years of prizes have been awarded from 1901 through 2013. To date, 15 women have been the recipients of this prestigious award. The average age of most recipients is 62. Three recipients of the award were incarcerated at the time they won the award: German pacifist and journalist Carl Von Ossietzky, Burmese politician Aung San Suvkyi and Chinese human rights activist Liu Xiaobo. There are Nobel Prize categories for Physics, Chemistry, Physiology/Medicine, Literature and the Nobel Peace Prize. This year there were 259 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize; 50 were organizations. This year’s winner, considered a global chemical weapons watchdog is The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons was the recipient of this year’s prize. Receiving the award for their extensive efforts to eliminate dangerous chemical weapons, this group oversees the task of collecting and destroying sarin and mustard gases.

They are part of the membership of 189 nations who ratified the 1997 Chemical Weapons Convention. Chemical weapons have been around for generations. Our grandfathers suffered mustard gas attacks in World War I. Then, during the Vietnam War our fathers had their concerns about the exposure to Agent Orange. chemical weapons. All Nobel Prize winners are selected by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in secret to decrease popular and/or political pressure. Unlike other Peace Prizes awarded to people far removed from us, this year’s prize hits right in our back yard. Alfred Nobel said in his will that he wanted “champions of peace.” Because of what he specifically wanted I believe that this year’s Nobel Peace Prize should have been shared by The Organization for the Prohibition of

Chemical Weapons and Malala Yousafzai. This Pakistani teenager has been advocating for the education of girls and women since before her tenth birthday. One year ago she almost lost her life because she was shot by Taliban gunmen who don’t want girls to be educated. Malala is a symbol of power for girls and women who are afraid to stand up for themselves. She recently thanked President Obama for the United States’ support of education for Pakistani, Afghan and Syrian refugees. Last month, on the first anniversary of the Global Education Initiative, she spoke to the United Nations. She asked that we send books to the countries that are suffering from terrorism instead of weapons and tanks. She also requested teachers instead of soldiers. There have been other threats made by the Taliban against her life, but this strong young woman continues to advocate for female education. She believes that no one has the right to take away their basic rights to an education. She believes that education is the best long-term approach to achieving peace. I am one woman that agrees with Malala 100 percent! So to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons: congratulations. And to Ms. Malala Yousafzai: please keep up your great work, and thank you for your tenacity and wisdom. May you be the 2014 recipient of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.

Get it Right the First Time

Marina Watts

Editor in Chief

Scrolling down my Twitter feed recently, I discovered that filmmakers are looking to resurrect the 2011 R-rated comedy, “Horrible Bosses” with a sequel. While it received mixed reviews from critics, I personally liked it. It was hilarious, with some memorable lines which I endlessly quote. The film had closure at the end as well. All was resolved, and I was satisfied with the run of events. Does it really need a sequel? As much as I loved it, I think that its originality would be lost if they tried to take the film a step further. Even the best movies out there don’t need more to them; they are best left off as is. Unfortunately, this hasn’t been the case. Often, when a film becomes a box office smash, is popular among critics and audiences alike, and profits greatly, filmmakers consider a sequel. Extending the alleged end to a film can be a great idea. Who needs closure to a storyline when you can have more! In theory, this is a great idea. Given there is enough money to be spent and film makers have a team willing to resurrect such a great story, what is there to lose? How about originality, closure, a timeless story, or even simply the up-keeping of a director or an actor’s reputation? Originality is a key factor for a good film. A fresh storyline that no one has heard of before can make or break a film. If brilliant enough, a film can receive positive recognition that ranges from a simple film critique to a nomination from the Academy Of Motion Arts & Sciences. Films like “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Inception” are quality original films. John Hughes wrote the script for “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” in a week, and over time it has become a cult classic. “Inception” brought a new concept of planting thoughts into the mind of a CEO’s son; with layers of dreams and an ending that still has me thinking, it has definitely stood the test of time. Plots and concepts like these are important for any good story or film. If ideas are being recycled, there is a slim chance that a film will be successful. Closure is an important aspect of a film. It is the defining factor of a stand-alone film. If you can watch a film and in those two hours (or whatever the length may be) and let the credits role feeling the story came full circle and resolved anything that wasn’t right, then there is closure. Closure comes in many forms, whether it is morals taught, people falling in love, or the unfortunate death of

a significant character. It is what makes a film worth watching to the end. How many of us have watched one (good or bad) just to see what happens at its conclusion? I have, just to know how things end up.

films are an excellent example, as each film got better and better upon release. The endings to the first and second left me on the edge of my seat, filled with excitement to see what was to come next. This is not

Without this element, it would be hard to distinguish what the really important parts of a film are. One may argue that the lack of closure is a good thing. For example, television

the case with every film, sadly. There are some good things that come out of sequels; all should not be put down. Superhero sequels, for example, are usually satisfactory. Picking up from where the

series, book series, films that require two or three motion pictures overall to serve their purpose. When there is originally intent to make another film after the first, directors and screenwriters choose to leave windows of opportunity. By taking advantage of

vigilante left off and continuing their saga can make a great picture. With a strong enough first film, assuming it introduces the struggles and the lifestyle that evolved from ordinary to extraordinary that each hero goes through, a platform for a sequel

their position early in the game, successful sequels can and will (potentially) be the result. The Christopher Nolan “Batman”

is easily set up. The same applies to book series, like Harry Potter, or film series, like Star Wars.

Opinions

On the other hand, some films are better off left alone. If directors keep recycling plot lines just for the sake of raking in a lot more money, then they have lost the idea of what makes a film worth watching. Let’s take “The Prestige”, for example. Christopher Nolan’s film about two feuding magicians looking for the better trick has a fantastic plot line, though it can get confusing with the constant twists. It is one that will make you replay the film as soon as the credits begin to roll. The ending provides closure, and although our mind is blown, we are happy with the fact that all had come full circle. Is there potential to squeeze in a sequel and extend the story? Sure. But will Nolan continue it? Absolutely not. Getting it right (and then some) the first time is good enough to leave all happy at the end (more or less). Unfortunately, directors find that they can push their luck and spend more money in hope that their next film will rake in more cash. Films can make a director or an actor (or anyone involved in a film, really) have their reputation skyrocket into infinite fame and fortune. However, a film can also break them apart and keep them from ever being Alisted again. Once a bad sequel comes along and a high-profile actor bandwagons onto it, their career can potentially be destroyed. It’s a sad thing, but it has happened a few times too many. How many times have you highly anticipated a fantastic sequel to one of your favorite films? Let’s take “The Hangover” for example. The wildly inappropriate, hilarious, and quickly became The quintessential R-Rated comedy of 2009, this film took audiences by storm. Upon the release of its sequel (which everyone thought was going to be as top-notch as the first, if not better), it was a disaster. It recycled the plot of a drug-induced tirade, and began to lose its luster. Clearly the Wolf Pack didn’t learn their lesson the first time around and just not get involved in anything risky. That’s what made the first one so bold. Last Memorial Day, a third film was released, which wasn’t even worth seeing. These films could have potentially destroyed the reputations of Bradley Cooper, a well-respected actor who has received nominations for various prestigious awards. Fortunately, it didn’t. F e l l o w moviegoers, be wary next time you consider buying a ticket, purchasing a Blu-Ray, or simply hopping on Netflix to view the movie that follows one of your favorite films. Unless the first one left doors open for a potentially great follow up, then don’t become upset upon your two hours of cinematic letdown.

As crazy as this may sound, I cannot imagine a world without coffee. My professional coffee machine at my house is my best friend. Since I became a college student and my lifestyle became much more hectic and demanding than ever, I have needed that extra kick. When you are balancing work, school, homework, an internship, writing for the school paper and trying to sleep soundly at night, you will do what you can to keep yourself awake in your nine A.M. class. None of that overpriced Frappuccino with extra whipped-cream crap though. I’m talking espresso shots, cappuchinos, just a simple cup of coffee even with a drop of milk. There is nothing like the smell of freshly ground coffee beans. It’s an acquired taste, like a fine wine, and it’s not for everyone. I have even debated making my address the Starbucks in Nanuet, so I can collect my mail there only because I am there so often.

Suzanne Peguero

I have a love/hate relationship with coffee. When I was ten years old, I found my mother drinking a cup of coffee. I whined incessantly, wanting to try some so I could “be an adult!” She promised me that when I started college, I could begin drinking coffee, as I probably would need it. Now, eight years later, I’m in college with a caffeine addiction. While it is a relatively harmless one, it is also the one that I am incredibly frustrated with myself for. I need coffee. If I don’t have it I turn into an incredibly grumpy, exhausted monster/student. Anywhere I go had better have a coffee place within a .5 mile radius. I am probably spending far too much money on Starbucks. So coffee, I love the fact that you give me energy and you taste delicious, but I am also addicted to you and can’t live without you now. So honestly, I hate you too.

Benedict Tagle

When my lips first made contact with you, I knew you were the one. It was love; the bliss that entered my heart was incredible. I felt something I’ve never felt before. I could spend the entire day with you, no problems. You’re always there for me. When I’ve got late nights because of schoolwork, work, or otherwise, you’re always there for me, helping throughout the night. I can reach for you at any time, and there you’ll be. Where would I be without you? In the cold, you’re the closest thing to heaven. Whenever it’s cold, the warmth that emanates from you as I caress you in my hands is amazing. Even when it’s warm outside, I enjoy your presence. Remember those afternoons we spent in cafés in Europe? We’ve been to Paris, Vienna, Berlin, London, Budapest, Prague, among other amazing cities. I’ve been all over the globe with you. Coffee, oh how I love you so.

Old-School Suspense: Alfred Hitchcock

Marina Watts

Editor In Chief

Every year, an increasing number of directors take on the ultimate challenge of creating a movie that will pull at your emotions to the most extreme points a film is capable of. Comedy makes you laugh till you can’t breathe. Tragedy makes you cry until your throat aches from being choked up. Then, there are suspense/psycho thriller films. There is nothing like gripping the edge of your seat, scared to watch what happens next, yet simultaneously dying to know where the twists will take you . Many filmmakers have strived to create good thriller films, but no one has done it quite as well as Alfred Hitchcock. He didn’t focus on gore, like many contemporary directors do. Hitchcock went for the shocking, the twists that had audiences more dumbfounded than grossed out. A poll from Britain’s Daily Telegraph said Hitchcock is “Unquestionably the greatest filmmaker to emerge from these islands, Hitchcock did more than any director to shape modern cinema, which would be utterly different without him. His flair was for narrative, cruelly withholding crucial information (from his characters and from us) and engaging the emotions of the audience like no one else.” His plots focus on crime, violence and murder and ushered in techniques directors use to this day.

Voyeurism is when an artist takes a figure and focuses on them in a private setting, like a bedroom or a dressing room. Often known as “keyhole paintings,” this technique gives us the feeling that we are looking at the audience through the keyhole of a door. The camera angles Hitchcock used were similar to this. He would pan over scenes similar to the way a person’s gaze would. Audiences felt like they were part of the film, standing in the room beside Jimmy Stewart or Grace Kelly. These angles emphasized the fear, anxiety and terror characters in the film would feel, and create everything to 10

be more tangible to us. For example, in “Rear Window,” the main character sits by his window throughout the film looking through his camera’s zoom lens, observing his neighbors. The MacGuffin Factor is a motivator (whether it is an idea, a person or an object) that pushes the protagonist to behave the way they do. Oftentimes, it wouldn’t be verbally mentioned. In horror films, as

Hitchcock has used, it is the film’s main focus in the first few scenes, but it loses its importance. It will still drive the main character throughout the film. However, by the end of the film, so many twists have jumped out at audiences that often it is forgotten about. For example, the suitcase full of money in “Psycho” becomes forgotten by the middle of the film, if not sooner as the characters hunt for Marion. Hitchcock is known as the master of suspense, an appropriate name for this man, as he will live on in film history forever. The English film director and producer established many precedents and techniques for the genres of film he focused on. His filmmaking lasted for over half a century from the 1920’s up until the later 1970’s. In all 53 of his films, he made a cameo, whether it was boarding a train or walking past a shop window. There are several Hitchcock films (some more well-known than others) that I like to revisit as autumn and Halloween roll in. These are my top five favourites: 1. Psycho (1960): Among the most mainstream and well-known horror films, “Psycho” Is very high up there. It is based on the book written by Robert Bloch. A secretary (Janet Leigh) takes $40,000 from a client and rides all the way to the Bates Motel. There, she meets a strange man, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) who lives with his mother. Upon her visit, she is murdered and the hunt for the money (and Marion Crane) begins. How about some useless knowledge about this

film? The blood in the famous murder scene? Hitchcock used chocolate syrup, since it has the same consistency as blood. “Psycho” was also the first film to have a toilet flushed onscreen. The more you know. 2. Rear Window (1954): The film that inspired the Shia LaBeouf film “Disturbia,” “Rear Window” is sure to increasingly keep you on the edge of your seat as the plot progresses. Injured sports photographer L.B. Jefferies (Jimmy Stewart) sits in his apartment during the heat of the summer. As he watches the people who live in his apartment’s courtyard, he discovers that a man who lives across the way is a murderer. With the help of his girlfriend, Lisa (Grace Kelly), they spy on him as he tries to cover up the evidence of his murdered wife. As the film progresses, you will find yourself further and further on the edge of your seat. My heart pounded upon my first viewing, and even though I know how it all ends, I cannot help but have panic attacks rewatching the climax of the film. 3. Rope (1948): Not only does it offer a good storyline and Jimmy Stewart, but it has cinematography that shouldn’t go unnoticed. The film opens with a murder scene, as two college students strangle a classmate. They proceed to hide the evidence before a dinner party in their

apartment, but constantly fight to keep their cool. What they believe is the perfect crime isn’t, as their professor (James Stewart) smells a rat. Audiences will be as nervous as the criminals throughout the film. Now, for the cinematographic aspect. At the time, film reels could only hold nine minutes of film at a time. In “Rope,” Hitchcock moved his camera around the scenery for the entire film as though to make it look like it was all one continuous shot. Today, this wouldn’t seem like such a fantastic feat. In his time, it required patience and smart camera angles. Viewers think that the film was filmed in one shot, as the camera pans the rooms and actors. You feel as though you are walking throughout the set alongside the cast members. 4. The Birds (1963): Well-known for

its strange plot (which was inspired by a short story), this film is more than enough to get under someone’s skin. The film stars Tippi Hedren, as she searches for a

pair of lovebirds for Mitch Brenner’s (Rod Taylor) sister’s birthday. As the movie progresses, they develop a relationship, and the birds begin acting increasingly strange. Many people in San Francisco fear that the apocalypse is approaching in the form of birds. Everywhere. They perch on fences, injure people and are just plain old creepy. After seeing “The Birds” I would not be surprised if you refuse to leave your house for a week. As all the birds migrate south for the winter, paranoia will take over your mindset, as they flock in bountiful packs overhead. 5. Vertigo (1958): Once more, Jimmy Stewart stars in this Hitchcock film, this time alongside Kim Novak and Barbara Bel Geddes. The plot follows Scottie (Stewart) as an acrophobic retired cop. Scottie becomes obsessed with a friend’s wife (Novak), and follows her around only to find out she may be suicidal. “Vertigo” is dark, and keeps the audience on their toes. The film introduced the camera technique known as the “zolly,” or dolly zoom. Irmin Roberts conceived this idea, as the image appears to stretch. It is essentially the

10 Things I Can’t Live Without

Suzanne Peguero

Managing Editor

1. Flannel This is an obsession that stems from snowboarding. When I first started, my friends convinced me to buy a few f lannel shirts to use for it, since they’re warm and you don’t have to wear a bulky jacket under your coat. Needless to say, when I slipped one on and looked at myself in the mirror, it was materialistic love at first sight. The warmth of them is great for fall and winter weather, as you don’t have to do unsightly layering. Not to mention that the boyish, grungy look of flannels makes i t easier to pair with almost any outfit. Once you put one on, you’ll understand why

they were so popular in the 90’s. 2. NARS Lipstick I am a self-professed lipstick fiend. I have a section in my makeup case devoted to lipstick, I always carry a tube with me wherever I go, and I almost bought a snowboard because it was called a

Lipstick. My friend even found a birthday card that said, “You’re never fully dressed without lipstick” and threatened to buy it for my next birthday. Consequently, during this summer, I set out on the mission of finding the perfect matte lipstick. It was in Sephora that I came across NARS Semi Matte Lipstick. It comes in sixteen different shades, and has a great semi matte look. It also deeply pigmented, but

doesn’t stain your lips when you take it off the way so many other lipsticks do. 3. Urbanears Plattan Headphones After many disappointing experiences with Skullcandy, I finally picked up a pair of these at Best Buy. They were relatively cheap for quality headphones ($60) and looked nice; however, disillusioned as I was, I was only expecting okay sound. Being a complete stickler for good sound, I was ready to be disappointed when I put them on. However, when I began listening to my music, I was completely surprised. The sound was extremely good for what I paid, and they were pretty stylish, too. Now I don’t go anywhere without these earphones. 4. Boots from H&M This is one of the best purchases I have made this season. I had been wanting a pair of Doc Martens for a long time now, but hadn’t been willing to shell out the $200 that it costs to buy them. Two or so weeks ago, I was in the H&M looking for oversized sweaters when I happened to come across these bad boys. They looked just like a pair of Doc Martens; however, instead of costing $200, they cost $35. I proceeded to hurriedly find my size, try them on, and purchase them as quickly as I could. Two weeks later, I have been wearing them with any and every outfit. 5. Cat Power Okay, so this isn’t so much of a thing as person, but she had to be included in this list. Cat Power is a musician that has been recording since the 90’s. It’s difficult to give her music a label since her style has changed so much over the years, but what is consistent about her music is that it is always good. My favorite album of hers, Moon Pix, features soft piano and guitar driven music that is quiet, emotionally powerful, jarring, and fragmented. Her lyrics are vague but still emotionally revealing, and I can always relate to them. Her latest album, Sun, was completely different from the rest, but definitely cemented her status as a music genius in my mind. 6. Oversized sweaters This obsession began in my father’s closet. I was rummaging through his clothing for

something large and baggy to wear, and happened to come upon his collection of

vintage oversized sweaters that he hadn’t worn in ages. I proceeded to try one on that I really liked, and then claimed it as my own. These sweaters are the best. They can be worn as dresses if they are long enough, simply

thrown on with a pair of leggings and some boots for a casual, autumn look, or worn with a collared shirt underneath. They’re also warm and comfortable, and are

currently “in” (I would like to think I am the one that started this trend). I have since taken all of my father’s oversized sweaters, and he has banned me from going through his closet anymore. 7. American Horror Story Probably the show I love the most (sorry, Game Of Thrones). This show is an anthology; the seasons aren’t related to each other, so you don’t have to watch the previous seasons to begin watching the show. However, I would recommend watching all the previous seasons anyway because they are absolutely amazing. The first was about a haunted murder house, the second was about an insane asylum, and the third ongoing season is about a coven of witches. I love this show so much that when it is on hiatus, I either constantly re-watch all the previously aired episodes, or just forget about its existence so I don’t have to suffer any emotional pain caused by its absence. While this show is excellent, it is most definitely not for the faint of heart, so watch at your own discretion. 8. Neff Beanies This is another obsession stemming from snowboarding. I began wearing these when I was snowboarding so ears wouldn’t freeze under my helmet. Eventually, I began wearing them at any given time during the winter because they’re functional and stylish, which a rare mix. They can look cute with flannel, oversized sweaters, tee shirts, dresses, and anything else you can think of. They also happen to currently be in style, so if you are concerned with the latest trends, you can rest assured you won’t be offending Anna Wintour. 9. Vans Sneakers An obsession that comes from skateboarding instead of snowboarding this time. I had been wanting a pair of lightweight shoes that would have good traction on the grip tape and wouldn’t feel as heavy and Osiris shoes would. A friend who also skateboards told me to buy a pair of Vans. Once I did, I was hooked. These are good for skateboarding and for everyday wear, as they are comfortable and let your foot breathe. I would definitely recommend everyone to buy a pair of these. 10. Feminism Duh. 11

The Cuckoo’s Calling: Book Review Taylor Hartell

Contributing Writer

We’ve all heard about J.K Rowling’s incredible success with her Harry Potter franchise. Even people who aren’t fans of the series know how much of an impact that the franchise has had on the world. Not only did it spawn seven books, eight movies, and make J.K Rowling the first writer to ever become a billionaire because of the sheer success of it, but Warner Bros. has recently announced that they plan on creating a movie in the Harry Potter universe based on Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts and Where to

October 9, 2013 was a very important day in my life. It wasn’t (as you are probably thinking) the birth of a sibling niece/nephew, and I didn’t get a full scholarship to Stanford University (that would be nice, though. Stanford, would you like to give me a full scholarship?). It was something that I had been anticipating eagerly for months; something that I would get unreasonably excited for whenever I thought about it. It was the premiere of the third season of American Horror Story. I normally don’t like modern T.V. shows. I think that they are shallow, boring, and that both the acting and writing is atrocious. When I grudgingly watched the first episode of American Horror Story, upon the request (which was more like a threatening demand) of a fellow friend and horror enthusiast, I came into it with this mindset. I was expecting it to be a slur to the genre of horror and not actually scary at all. After watching the pilot episode, I was completely surprised. While this show is definitely campy and over-the-top, it also delivers some solid scares and addresses some important issues that we talk about in our society. However, the real reason I enjoyed this 12

Find Them”. Unbeknownst to many, back in April, something slipped underneath the radar J.K Rowling’s newest book, “The Cuckoo’s Calling”, which was written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. No one knew about the book until July when it was publicly revealed that Rowling had written it. Book sales, which had been moderate up to that point, soared, and it became a critical success, which greatly differed from Rowling’s novel, “The Casual Vacancy”, released in 2012. The Cuckoo’s Calling is a mystery novel that begins with the British tabloids investigating the death of famous model Lula Landry after she jumps from a balcony. Three months later, we are introduced to our protagonist Cormoran Strike, a war veteran turned private investigator who is down on his luck with the lack of cases. Enter John Bristow, the adopted brother of Lula Landry. Convinced that there had been foul play concerning his sister’s suicide, he asks Cormoran, and his new temp Robin Ellacott, to re-investigate the case.

When I heard that this was J.K Rowling’s latest book, I knew it was going to be worth checking out. I quickly downloaded the book, and found myself not disappointed at all. Rowling’s ability as a writer truly shines in this novel, proving that she wasn’t a one-hit wonder with her Harry Potter series. It is an entirely d i f fe r e nt atmosphere that leaves you very engaged - you never quite know if a character is quite as they seem. The plot is great at keeping you reading, trying to predict who the killer was. When you do find out, it comes as a huge surprise. I absolutely could not put this book down. The characters were very real and exciting; the plot moved at a nice pace so it didn’t feel like it was lingering too long on one section. The exchanges between Cormoran and Robin were refreshing, with

show was that it was able to scare me a couple times; with all the horror movies I’ve seen, this is no easy task. I genuinely do not know why I enjoy being scared. It really does not make sense, and actually seems somewhat

entirety of Child’s Play. There are many people I know who are just like this, too. Some would say that it because we have too much time on our hands, which is definitely not true (overachieving Honors Student, anyone?). It has more to do

mentally masochistic. But nonetheless, I always find myself anticipating that fear in the pit of my stomach I get when I watch the opening scene to Scream or the

with our bizarre love of thrills, and our curiosity of the macabre. Some of us have an inexplicable love for thrills and adrenaline rushes. Horror

their relationship defined as a respectful platonic friendship rather than a forced romance for the sake of added drama. This book earns a nine out of ten rating for me. It is a fantastic read that is worth getting. For any fans of J.K Rowling, if you have not read this book, I would definitely recommend you should! And even for fans who didn’t like Harry Potter: if you’re interested in a good mystery novel, I would say to check this book out! It is definitely a must-have read!

movies (or genuinely frightening ones, at any rate) give us a good, safe dose of that. It’s like riding a roller coaster: you feel like you are doing something extremely dangerous, but in reality, what you’re doing is inherently safe. There’s also a sense of catharsis and victory as the credits roll, feeling as though you have survived something dark and dangerous. There also may be a positive sense of resolution come the end of the movie. IGN reports, “The ‘Excitation Transfer Theory’ is tied closely to this idea. The theory reads that viewers who experience fear or anger at the antagonist during a horror movie will feel an amplified positive emotion come the film’s resolution, whether it be a happy ending or not. According to psychology professor Susan Burggraf, the exaltation caused by excitation transfer results in the “snuggle effect” - hence the reason why horror movies are frequently considered to be great for first dates.” Altogether, the psychology of why we love horror is one that is interesting to read about and consider, but also is one that I am not sure we can entirely understand scientifically. Perhaps horror suggests a darkness in humans that we try to repress in civilization: the darkness in us that enjoy watching people get menaced and murdered, and staring curiously at what fear looks like.

3D Printing Takes a Delicious Turn

Brandon Tanis

Staff Writer

Food is a substance that living things consume in order to maintain their growth and life. Traditionally, when our great ancestors were experiencing hunger, they would hunt for animals within the wilderness or farm vegetables from their own crops. Fast forwarding to the modern age, we can conveniently commute to the closest grocery store, supermarket, or restaurant to purchase food for ourselves to eat. Due to the rapid technological advancements, going the extra mile to obtain food will soon become a thing of the past, thanks to the 3D printer. While it’s still in the developmental phase, this printer will soon pave the future of how food will be created and distributed to the general public. What’s a 3D printer? Many people will ask themselves what

exactly is a 3D printer? A 3D printer is a type of additive manufacturing where a 3D object is created by layering successive layers of materials until completion. These printers are known for being more efficient, accessible, and affordable compared to other kinds of additive technology within the field. People were able to successfully replicate tools, human tissues, jewelry, shoes, toys etc. from this procedure. That’s good incentive for consumers who are really interested in investing one of these. Furthermore, it’s also beneficial for architects, fashion designers, dental/ medical industries, civil/military engineering, a u t o m o b i l e companies (as well as many more) to get a hold of this technology.

Intriguing, but what about the food? Now that we got a little bit of background information about the 3D Printer, let’s talk about food! I can imagine potential first time buyers are very anxious to make the most exquisite meals for your friends and family. Unfortunately, creating very lavish dishes isn’t feasible at the moment, due to the process of producing food being relatively new. So far, the 3D printer features a sparse list of food that it’s capable of making such as: cookies, gummy treats, chocolate, corn chips, bacon strips (as well as some other foods). Thankfully, NASA is going above and beyond by spending $125 million towards developing a perfected 3D printed pizza along with some other popular dishes! Does it taste as good as it looks? While the list of 3D printed food is pretty lackluster for the time being, at least there are a variety of snacks of the future to chow down on. I can guarantee that many inquisitive people will q u e s t i o n whether these foods will taste equivalent to the food that they cook for themselves. Personally, I don’t know anyone or any facility that has a 3D printer within their possession, so I wouldn’t know how they would taste like. However, staff reporter Laurie Segall (from CNN Money) had the opportunity to try a 3D printed snack from the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan. Based from her

observation and experience, she was a little skeptical at first until she took her

bite and said: “This is really good!” Is 3D printed food safe to eat? Alright, we know that 3D printed food can look and taste good, so now the question of the day will be whether it’s safe for us to eat. There are safety precautions that must be taken into consideration, such as the plastic tubes (that’s prevalent in some 3D printers) that will eventually decompose or potentially

melt into your food. Likewise, you’ll also have to take into consideration towards the questionable materials that being used to create the food as well. Researchers claim that they’re able to manipulate the amount of nutrients it provides, and they’re also prolong the expiration date compared to conventional food. Experts that are experimenting with this project stated that it’s safe to consume, but I would rather wait until they’re tested extensively before I think about putting that into my mouth. Where can I buy one and how much does it cost? If you heart is set on purchasing your very own 3D printer, then look no further! Sadly, they can’t be bought at your nearest retail store, however, you’ll be able to find one online. There are various manufacturers that are

selling (quality) 3D printers that come in different shapes and sizes within a price range of $1,0005,000 from their official website. There’s also another alternative to purchasing these printers from Amazon (or eBay) if you’re not comfortable from buying from those websites. A p p r ox i m a t e l y five to seven years from now, 3D printers will become mainstream for the general public with a more

reasonable price. It’s really hard to believe we have reached a point were a mere printer can simply produce everyday essentials for us to keep going. This is some crazy contraption that you’ll see from Star Trek, but we really didn’t expect to see this kind of technology happen anytime soon. Personally, I could see a

perfected 3D printer being relevant for both consumers and businesses, due to catering to both audiences. Consumers finally have the ability to create as much food as their hearts desire; likewise, businesses can make money off of these printers and the materials used to make the food. It has enormous potential, and I can’t wait to see where this will be heading in the next few years!

Shooting for a Winning Season: The Nets Benedict Tagle

Sports Editor

When Mikhail Prokhorov was approved by the league as the new owner of the Nets franchise on May 11, 2010, he sent a bold message to the team’s fans and the rest of the league. In a video message, Prokhorov declared, “If everything goes as planned…championship in five years, maximum.” Looking at the offseason moves the franchise has made since Prokhorov acquired the team, it sure looks as if plans are going right on schedule. This past offseason, the Nets made bold moves, signaling their intent to dethrone the Heat as league champions. First, the team made a blockbuster trade with division rivals, the Boston Celtics. Signaling the end to an era in Boston, this move defines the era of Prokhorov’s Brooklyn Nets—the team is willing to pay any price to win an NBA championship. The Nets acquired future Hall-of-Fame players Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, as well as Jason Terry and D.J. White. In exchange for the four players, Brooklyn traded Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, Keith Bogans, MarShon Brooks, and Kris Joseph. In addition, Boston acquired three future first-round picks, as well as the right to swap picks in 2017. The team, fresh off a season where uncertainty plagued the head coaching position all season long, looked to a new face to lead the team. In selecting Jason Kidd to become the head coach of the team, the Nets took a risk in hiring the future Hall-of Famer. The new face of the team is also newly retired from playing, having played for the crosstown rivals, the New York Knicks, last season. Kidd is new to coaching, having no prior coaching experience at all. The franchise filled the rest of the team’s needs with solid players, improving the quality of the first eight players in the rotation. With a strong starting lineup for the team consisting of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Brook Lopez, Garnett, and Pierce, all that is needed for the team is an efficient bench. The front office certainly did their best in trying, acquiring Terry, Andrei Kirilenko, Shaun Livingston, Mason Plumlee, and Alan Anderson. Add in members of last year’s bench, such as Andray Blatche and Mirza Teletovic, and the Nets have solid depth across the roster. What will happen to the team this upcoming season? Here are the three options: best-case scenario, worst-case scenario, and the more likely outcome. Best Case Scenario To the delight of Nets fans, Prokhorov is psychic, and has an amazing ability at reading the future. His bold statement in 2010 of winning a championship within five years has come true! It is June 2014, and the veteran faces of Pierce, Garnett, Terry, and Kidd triumphantly smile with glee as new commissioner Adam Silver presents the Larry O’Brien trophy to the Nets at the Barclays Center. Lucky enough to win their first championship in front of a home crowd, the eager faces of Williams, Johnson, Lopez, and Kirilenko—the remaining members of the team’s core— sport smiles that stretch from ear to ear. The excitement of the players, as well as the home crowd, is overwhelming. Prokhorov, the savvy man that he is, stands on the stage alongside the team, smiling smugly at the sight before his eyes. He had known what was going to happen. 14

It was just like how he had predicted when he was officially made the new owner, with the team winning their first championship of the Prokhorov era within five years. It was all according to plan. The season went smoothly, and apart from a small bump in the road here and there, the season was a massive success. The team played flawlessly under their new head coach; in fact, it looks as if Kidd is going to be a better coach than player. He managed the personalities and egos of every player on the team perfectly. He outsmarted the likes of Tom Thibodeau, Frank Vogel, and Erik Spoelstra on the way to representing the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals. In the championship round, not even Gregg Popovich could get the better of the new Nets head coach. Williams and Lopez, two players in their prime, play the best basketball of their careers. Joe Johnson, reaching the end of his prime, reminds fans why his annual salary is so high, and plays with renewed vigor. The three key pieces in the Boston trade turn back the clock about ten years, playing as well as they did in their prime. Garnett and Pierce, if not for the minutes played, could be MVP candidates, alongside teammate Williams. Terry is a spark off the bench, torching opposing defenses. Terry shows he still has a lot left in the tank, and is a contender for the Sixth Man of the Year Award. The bench plays extremely effective basketball. Along with Terry, players such as Kirilenko, Blatche, and Livingston prevent the team from losing a step when the powerful starters are pulled from the game. Kirilenko makes fans and league executives jealous by playing like a younger version of himself, reminding them what a bargain the Nets received. Blatche continues to be a solid front court player off the bench, relieving Garnett and Lopez. Livingston plays solid basketball, showing glimpses of what he could have been had he not been injured. He is solidified as the team’s second point guard behind Williams. The season, ending with a championship, encourages Prokhorov to spend even more. He looks at the upcoming free agency class, and flashes that same smug smile he has during the Larry O’Brien trophy presentation. He is confident he’ll be able to persuade at least one of the names to join the foundation that the front office has built in Brooklyn, in an effort to win more championships. Who needs draft picks? The draft picks they gave up to Boston are nothing. Prokhorov has shown he is willing to spend money, with a $102 million payroll and a luxury tax bill of approximately $87 million. Prokhorov settles in at his desk, and starts making plans for the next phase of the Prokhorov era: league domination. Worst Case Scenario Brooklyn Nets’ general manager Billy King, at the end of a frustrating season, calls his counterpart at the Atlanta Hawks, Danny Ferry. With a deep breath, he asks him, “What will it take to get that draft pick we sent you in the Joe Johnson trade?” The first round pick in the upcoming 2014 draft is poised to be a high pick, as the Nets had a terrible season. Prokhorov has demanded a new team be built, ready for a championship in the upcoming season. The only two untouchables are Williams and Lopez, unless another team is willing to give up someone that is a true superstar. The team desperately wishes it had the team’s first round picks in this upcoming

draft, hyped as the strongest since the famous 2003 draft, that had the likes of LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh. Unless a major trade for draft picks occurs, it looks as if Prokhorov will have to take out his checkbook and rely on trades and free agency to rebuild the team. The season, supposed to be Brooklyn’s best chance at winning the championship, does not come close to reaching the expectations set before the season. Jason Kidd and his inexperience did not bode well. The bumps at the beginning of the season, although not surprising, seemingly affected the remainder of the season. The coaching staff and the players never seemed to be on the same page. Garnett and Pierce played poorly, perhaps an indication that the wheels are about to come off. At times, their play is reminiscent of a New York City traffic jam—slow and frustrating. Williams— who was supposed to have a great season because of a fellow elite point guard that understands him is now coaching—slips in his production. Lopez, like a couple of seasons ago, gets hit by the injury bug. He only plays in a handful of games, and the team sorely misses his presence inside. Johnson is aging, and the indication is in his production. There are stretches in the season when he seems invisible on the court. Terry, supposed to be an electrifying presence off the bench, also shows the heavy mileage he has logged in his career. Nevertheless, there is too much talent on the roster for the team to miss the playoffs. Kirilenko continues to produce, holding the bench together. Blatche continues to play well in his role, and Livingston performs admirably in his backup position. Remember, the Milwaukee Bucks made the playoffs with a 38-44 record last season. The team finishes just above .500, and ends up with the sixth seed in the conference. The team is eliminated from postseason competition in the first round, and leaves a number of questions for the front office to answer, regarding the core of the team. More Realistic Scenario The lack of coaching experience for Kidd will not be as big of a problem as some believe. There is a reason he made sure to have Lawrence Frank as part of the coaching staff. With Frank’s help, the lack of coaching experience is kept to a minimum. The team is filled with veterans, and any problems within the locker room are dealt with quickly. Despite the media frenzy of New York magnifying any potential problem, there is no major issue between the coach and the players. At the beginning of the season, there are expected bumps in the road. The implementation of a new coach’s system and new players in the core rotation are the more noteworthy speed bumps. It is natural for the team to take a while in getting all the cogs in the machine going at full speed. With a new coaching staff and a new group of players, the team needs to establish a foundation. Despite these minor problems, the team does reasonably well. Kidd does an expert job of managing the minutes of Terry, Garnett, and Pierce. His very recent experience in their shoes should help him

with this. With well-managed minutes for the veterans, they are enabled to show that they still have gas left in the tank. Unlike last season, they will not be expected to carry the majority of the workload—this will help rejuvenate the players, and bode well for a playoff run. After a couple of rough patches during the course of the season, Williams acclimates to the new offensive system. With the support of a former point guard of his caliber, Williams plays at a high level. Having been lost in the discussion for best point guard in the league the past couple of seasons, he will again be firmly entrenched among the discussion of the point guard elite. Because he has the support of a more potent front line—both offensively and defensively—Lopez plays even better than the previous season. Lopez will be deserving of a second consecutive AllStar roster spot, even though it may not show statistically because of the addition of two other offensive options. Kirilenko will play the same type of basketball that he has displayed throughout his career, and the two year, $6.5 million contract he signed this past off-season

looks even more like a bargain. Livingston and Blatche will do an admirable job off the bench. The Nets will have their fair share of problems, because with so many new pieces to the puzzle, the team will need to work to build chemistry. However, once the initial problems are ironed out, the savvy veteran team will be one of the better teams in their conference. The team, with their improved starting lineup, as well as quality depth on the bench, will secure a playoff spot. The team has the ability to win over 50 games, even in an improved Eastern Conference. The team will be contending for the Atlantic Division title, and will have the third through fifth seed in the playoffs. Having conserved their strength for the playoffs, the Nets make a run in the postseason. With strong contenders such as the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks, and Miami Heat as likely opponents in the second round, the Nets have a long road to their intended goal. The Nets definitely have enough talent to reach the Eastern Conference finals. However, if Miami is the team standing between Brooklyn and the NBA Finals, the Nets will have their hands full. Which team in the NBA does not have a problem with the Heat? Although the team still faces questions in their immediate future, the Nets will certainly be closer to the goal Prokhorov established in 2010.

Second Place is Not Good Enough: The Knicks Benedict Tagle

Sports Editor

Coming off their best season in years, the New York Knicks look to improve and continue their momentum into the upcoming season. This previous offseason, the Knicks made a number of moves in an effort to solidify their position as contenders in the Eastern Conference. The team lost two of its veteran players to retirement, Jason Kidd and Rasheed Wallace, both leaving to become coaches. Another potentially key loss was Chris Copeland, who left in free agency for the Indiana Pacers. After winning the Sixth Man of the Year, the Knicks made sure to re-sign J.R. Smith. Smith will be on the Knicks’ payroll for the next three years, for a total of $18 million. The team also re-signed two key pieces off the bench in Pablo Prigioni and Kenyon Martin. After Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks had problems with scoring. Though J.R. Smith averaged a career high of 18.1 points per game last season, he was incredibly streaky. Confident with his outside shot, he does not shy from pulling the trigger. Let’s take a look at an eight game stretch during the month of January from the previous

season. For eight consecutive games, he had less than a .400 field goal percentage. Now, look at the box score from these games that spanned from January 7 to January 26. During these games, he went 7-18, 10-29, 4-17, 3-11, 6-15, 719, 3-16, 0-8 from the field. There were other games where a low field goal percentage and a high number of field goals attempted were combined. The Knicks needed to improve their second scoring options. The team went out and traded for Andrea Bargnani from Toronto. In exchange for the Italian big man, the team sent Marcus Camby, Steve Novak, Quentin Richardson, a first round pick in 2016, and second round picks in 2014 and 2017. Bargnani, a former first overall pick, has shown the ability to score throughout his career. Although not the best rebounder or defender, he will help alleviate the pressure of scoring and give the team another viable option for the offensive side of the ball. The team added veteran Metta World Peace to the roster, helping the defensive side of the ball. Like Kidd and Wallace last year, he adds a championship-winning personality to the locker room. The team added Beno Udrih as another option in the backcourt off the bench. Udrih has shown the ability to both score and run an offense efficiently. Through the draft, the team picked up Tim Hardaway Jr. with the 24th pick overall. A shooting guard from the University of Michigan, he can provide a Smith-like presence off the bench. The son of a five time All-Star, he has big shoes to fill, and the rookie has done well so far. Throughout the preseason,

Hardaway has shown he deserves to play in the NBA, and some are referring to him as the future of the team. What will happen to the team this upcoming season? Here are three options: best-case scenario, worst-case scenario, and the more likely outcome. Best Case Scenario The loss of major contributors from the previous season seems to have no effect on the team. The likes of Kidd, Novak, and Copeland are barely remembered. The new additions to the team have certainly filled the footsteps of their predecessors. Bargnani, after having played on Raptors teams that lost year after year, is rejuvenated by joining the Knicks. For the first time in his career, he is on a squad that has aspirations to reach the Eastern Conference Finals, and if all goes right, the NBA Finals. Although he has never been mistaken for George Mikan, Wilt Chamberlain, or Bill Russell for his rebounding prowess, Bargnani makes a sincere effort to improve this particular facet of his game. By trying, he improves his individual statistics, and helps the team indirectly. Placing his 7’0” body in front of opposing players and boxing out better than he ever has in his career, he helps improve the rebounding of the entire team. Having another additional body banging down low allows other players to grab the rebound, something that was missed when Anthony played at the power forward position. The Knicks were one of the worst rebounding teams last season, finishing 25th in the league. Metta World Peace plays well, channeling his younger days. He plays similar to the days of Ron Artest. World Peace plays well in the role he is expected to fill—play solid defense and hit the occasional shot. He and Iman Shumpert are expected to lead the defensive effort on the perimeter, with Chandler patrolling the paint. Udrih is a smart offseason addition to the team. He plays as he has throughout his career—leading the offense as a second guard and providing a little scoring punch. Unlike last year’s Knicks squad, Udrih provides the team a legitimate scoring option when Raymond Felton is off the court. Hardaway Jr. will not get minutes every night, especially at the beginning of the season. When he does get his minutes, he impresses. He shows the ability to score the ball from numerous places on the court. What is more impressive is his shot selection. Although he has the Smith-like ability to light up the court off the bench, he does not have the Smithlike attitude of chucking up shot after shot. Speaking of Smith, the amount of shots forced up will be reduced. Overall, his play on the court will be smarter. Similar to his stretch of games late last season when he cemented his Sixth Man of the Year award, scoring 30 points multiple times in a short stretch, he will attack the paint constantly. Gifted with incredible athleticism, Smith will make full use of it. He will no longer settle for contested jump shots. With the new additions the team has made, Smith will no longer feel forced to provide scoring all by himself. Prigioni will show more confidence in himself. Now having been acclimated to the NBA, he will not act as timid on the court. Instead of passing the ball to Anthony or Smith every possession, he will take the open shot. The progression of Prigioni is inevitable; he was already beginning to display more confidence late last season. Martin rounds out a solid four-man rotation

at the power forward and center position, not including Anthony. Last season, he provided a welcome flash of energy off the bench. This season he will continue to do the same, while adding a tough defensive player. He will not be afraid of using all six of his fouls, especially with Stoudemire, Chandler, and Bargnani in front of him in the rotation. Stoudemire is healthy, for the first time in a long time. In the minutes the coaching staff and medical team allow him to play, he reminds everyone why the Knicks signed him to a 5 year, $100 million contract. He shows flashes of the first half of his initial season with the Knicks, when he was a legitimate MVP candidate. He is not hampered by his constant knee problems, and displays the fruits of his hard labor from working on his post game. Having worked with Hakeem Olajuwon in the past, Stoudemire displays an increased set of moves on the block. The Knicks, with all the cogs in the machine working to perfection, easily snatch a playoff spot. Having contended with the Brooklyn Nets the entire season for the Atlantic Division title, the Knicks manage to claim the division in the last month of the season. In the playoffs, the team easily gets out of the first round. In the second round of the postseason, the Knicks face the Nets. The Battle of New York is on; this is a true Subway Series, with division rivals facing each other in the playoffs. Fans of both teams are treated to wildly entertaining games, decided in the last minutes of the final quarter or overtime. The Knicks manage to squeeze out of the round into the Eastern Conference Finals by winning one of the best games of recent memory in Madison Square Garden. In the conference finals, the team faces the Heat, hoping to end Miami’s chance of a threepeat. LeBron James, in his quest to become remembered incredibly, the team wins the series against the Heat. With an incredible rush of momentum, the Knicks storm into the NBA Finals against the top overall seed, the San Antonio Spurs. Having just experienced an exhilarating rush from beating the Heat, nothing can stop the Knicks. They sweep the Spurs, and capitalize their first title in 40 years with a resounding win at Madison Square Garden. Worst Case Scenario The Knicks have an incredibly disappointing season. Nothing goes according to plan, and the front office has a long list of questions to answer before advancing. Bargnani, who had hoped to provide the team with a legitimate scoring option, does not have the ability to do so. Once again, the big man has been hit by the injury bug. He has played 66 games the past two seasons—combined. Once again, Stoudemire is not healthy for the majority of the season. His large contract looks like a big waste on the salary cap, and fans wish that the team had not used the amnesty clause already. Smith hurts the team, on and off the court. Multiple times to the media, he has expressed his desire to start, just as he has already done this preseason. On the court, Smith continues to play like himself. He continuously attempts challenged shots. Even when he has a poor shooting night, he continues to shoot the ball. Despite this, the team manages to earn a playoff spot, albeit a lower seed. The Knicks earn the sixth seed in the playoffs, and face third seed Brooklyn in the first round. In the series, the Nets make a claim to the basketball throne of the city. With a short series against the Knicks, the Nets make short work of their crosstown rivals on their way to glory. While watching from home, the Knicks and their fans watch as Brooklyn beats Miami in the Eastern Conference Finals. From there, the Nets win the Larry O’Brian Trophy. Nets fans are ecstatic with the victory, making sure to point it out to every Knicks fan.

Not confident with the team’s efforts to win a championship, Anthony leaves the team via free agency. Unfortunately for the team, the Knicks did well enough in the season to miss out on one of the potential superstars in the extremely talented 2014 draft. The future of the team looks murky, with no superstar to build around. Shumpert and Hardaway are nice pieces, but they are unable to fill the void left by Anthony. More Likely Scenario The Knicks will have a solid season, but it may not be enough to fulfill their goals. The team has improved over the offseason, but then again, so has every team they are contending with. The second seed in the conference does not look like a sure thing. First, Brooklyn has certainly improved, adding numerous pieces to the roster. The team has improved their starting lineup with future Hall of Famers Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. The team also added solid depth to their bench during the summer. The Chicago Bulls have former MVP Derrick Rose returning to the lineup. With him in the lineup, the Bulls are automatically upgraded to one of the best teams in the conference. With signs indicating Rose does not seem to have lost a step, the Bulls look dangerous. The Pacers, a team that gave both the Knicks and Heat fits last year, look ready to knock Miami off their perch. With Paul George emerging as a potential superstar, the team has former All-Star Danny Granger returning from injury. With Roy Hibbert developing into one of the best centers in the conference, the Pacers are poised to make noise in the postseason. Bargnani, just prior to his second preseason game, already suffered his first injury. For Knicks fans, the very minor injury is hopefully not a precursor of what is to come. Stoudemire will most likely have a minute restriction, limiting the potential production he may have. Luckily, the bench plays well. Udrih and World Peace are solid offseason acquisitions, and the transition between starters and second unit is smooth. Smith will hopefully be smarter with his possessions. The team can use Hardaway, a player with a similar skill set to Smith. Shumpert will show further progression as a player, and his future looks bright. Already a talented perimeter defender, Shumpert grows his offensive skillset. All he is missing is a consistent jump, and with the work he has put in during the offseason, this may no longer be an issue. Once the playoffs begin, the team will have a difficult time. Imagine if the team earns the fourth or fifth seed in the playoffs; they would be forced to play one of the aforementioned teams in the first round. Even if they were to win in the first round, they would most likely be playing Miami in the second round. Those first two stages in the playoffs would be very difficult for any team in that situation. If the Knicks were to beat Miami in the second round, they would still have the task of playing either Brooklyn, Miami, or Chicago. After that round, the team would finally earn their tickets to the NBA Finals. If the team were to only earn the fourth or fifth pick, they would be looking at a long and difficult road to their goal of winning the championship. This season, the team will be fighting Brooklyn for the title in the Atlantic Division. Whoever loses the race for the division title will be put at a heavy disadvantage heading into the postseason. The series between the teams immediately following Miami are a toss-up. It would not be surprising at all if the team were to be eliminated from the playoffs in the second round. If the team were to have the fourth or fifth seed, it would not be shocking if the team has a disappointing first-round exit from the postseason. 15

John Wall, “Breaking Through the Wall” Christian Cataldo

Contributing Writer

The NBA has a plethora of talented point guards in the league. Names like Russell Westbrook, Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, and Rajon Rondo come to mind when talking about the elite point guards in the NBA, but there are also players knocking on the door hoping to be called elite. One of those players is John Wall. Wall was a standout high school player in Raleigh, North Carolina for Word of God Christian Academy. His spectacular play in high school and AAU, earned the praise of scouts, and he was ranked the number one overall prospect in the country by numerous scouting services. Committing to college basketball powerhouse University of Kentucky, Wall continued his success on the court and led them to an Elite Eight appearance. Anticipating being the number one overall selection in the NBA Draft, Wall declared for the draft. Wall was selected first overall in the 2010 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards, in hopes of rejuvenating the struggling franchise. At the time, the Wizards were a circus, having numerous players making more headlines for their off-court issues then their on-court performances. Whether it was Gilbert Arenas bringing guns to the locker

room or the numerous head scratching plays made by Javale McGee, the Wizards were in need of a fresh start. Wall continued to show his potential as he dominated the Las Vegas Summer League, and was named the Most Outstanding Player. The Wizards struggled that year finishing 23-

59. However, Wall had an impressive rookie season, finishing second to Blake Griffin for the Rookie of the Year award. Wall’s expectations for his second year were high as many compared him to MVP point guard Derrick Rose. With the 2011-12 season affected by a lockout, NBA players came together during

the off-season, playing numerous pickup games. Wall often made jaw dropping plays, showcasing elite talents. Going into the shortened season, Wall was compared to All-Star talent like Russell Westbrook and Derrick Rose. Many believe Wall is just as, if not more, athletic than those superstars. Already possessing elite athleticism, great rebounding, and outstanding play-making ability, all he needed was a consistent jump shot. Surprisingly, Wall did not fulfill expectations that season, and his statistics regressed. The Wizards had another disappointing season, and with Kyrie Irving emerging as a future superstar his rookie year, the John Wall disappeared overnight. Wall missed the beginning of the 201213 season due to a knee injury. The Wizards struggled without their floor leader. On January 12, 2013, Wall finally returned to the lineup. Wall started out slow, but as the season progressed he shook off the rust. The Wizards became a surprisingly tough match-up for any team they faced. Wall started to put up the superstar numbers people expected from him. On March 22, 2013, against the Los Angeles Lakers, Wall

recorded 24 points, 6 rebounds, and 16 assists. Three days later against a defensive Memphis Grizzlies, Wall put up 47 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists. Wall is flying under the radar going into the upcoming season, but don’t expect this to last long. Wall is due to have a breakout season this year, and emerge as the superstar talent he was expected to become. Wall will be coming off his outstanding finish of last season, along with an entire off-season of being healthy. Hearing the critics writing him off as someone who will never reach his full potential is only fueling his burning desire to become one of the NBA’s elite players and driving him to work harder than ever before. With second year player Bradley Beal and rookie Otto Porter on the roster, do not be surprised if the Wizards are in the playoffs for the first time in four years and John Wall finds a spot on the Eastern Conference All-Star Team.

Mexico Struggles to Qualify for World Cup Daniel Tagle

Contributing Writer

Mexico: a country in love with soccer, and whose national team, “El Tri,” has a very celebrated history. This year, Mexico struggled to qualify for the World Cup, and it has been described as a crisis of some sort. For the last 23 years, Mexico has qualified for soccer’s World Cup with relative ease. However, this latest edition of the World Cup was different. Throughout the qualifying process, Mexico faced difficulty both on and off the pitch. With the team’s performance lacking on the pitch, the team changed managers—constantly. In the past six weeks, Mexico has had four different managers. With the repeated firing and hiring of managers, Mexico placed a media carnival on the team. There were multiple distractions throughout the process, possibly hindering the performance of the team. Fortunately for the team, even as all hope seemed to be lost, Mexico will still have a chance to qualify for a spot in the World Cup, and will be playing in a playoff against New Zealand in November, all thanks to perhaps the team’s biggest rival: the United States. The United States men’s national 16

soccer team played spectacularly in the qualifying rounds, finishing with a record of 7-2-1 in the CONCACAF region, and earning the team the top

spot in the region. Costa Rica was in second at 5-2-3, and in third with a record of 4-3-3 was Honduras. Mexico had lost their game against Costa Rica, meaning that they were right on the line of qualifying for the World Cup. Panama, facing the United States, needed to win their match against the American team to clinch their spot in the World Cup playoff at fourth place in the region.

Panama went on to score the first goal of the match from Torres in the first half. In the second half, the American squad responded with a goal of their own from Michael Orozco, leveling out the playing field. Luís Tejada then scored for Panama in the 84th minute, seemingly icing a victory for the Panamanians. However, in extra time, both Graham Zusi and Aron Johannsson scored, putting out any hope in Panama qualifying. It was a devastating loss for the Panamanians, who had lost to Mexico just earlier from a spectacular bicycle kick. The United States team, having already qualified for the World Cup,

did not need to win. Instead of their top-f light first team, coach Jurgen Klinsmann, rested some of the starters and played a fair game. The lack of true first-team players added to the Panamanian disappointment, ref lected in the way the team reacted following the match. Upset at their own team’s performance, many Mexican citizens believed that they had no more chances to qualify for the World Cup. Upon hearing the news of the United States beating Panama, many Mexicans were ecstatic; they were celebrating in the street, honking their car horns, and talking about the big news. The United States, in many Mexicans’ eyes, is the savior of Mexico’s hopes of a World Cup. Zusi, scoring a very tough header to tie the game up against Panama, is seen as the hero of Mexico. Zusi has been sent many gifts from Mexicans, including a plaque with a message of thanks, and a drawing of him as a saint, with the caption “San Zusi”, or in English, “Saint Zusi”. After all the celebration, Mexico now needs to focus on the tough road in front of them. They have a playoff to qualify for the World Cup against New Zealand in a home-and-away series. The New Zealanders are the underdogs between the two, so it is expected that Mexico, who is thought to be superior, will win, despite their, (as some would describe) lackluster performance this year.
