If you haven’t been watching “Black Mirror,” you really need to start.

In a country that is becoming increasingly more diverse but seemingly less tolerant of diversity, RCC serves as a safe haven for people of all backgrounds to come together for the one common purpose of education. Before 2016’s presidential election, we weren’t necessarily unaware of the fact that we are a divided nation, but perhaps we were just intentionally oblivious to it. This election came as a shock to many and not just because of the outcome (although that was quite harrowing to some), but because it violently awoke us from the dreamlike state that we were all in before, reminding us of the pluralistic values that can be found at America’s very foundation. Diversity and its place in this

country has come under attack and America’s volcanic mixture of values has come to a boiling point, even here in Rockland County where, like the rest of the country, we’ve found ourselves struggling to understand and deal with our differences. In fact, in Rockland County specifically, our differences tend to remain neatly behind town lines, with just so much as a 5-mile radius of towns being the difference in values and ways of thinking. Walking throughout the campus of Rockland Community College is mundane to some but uplifting for me. Seeing so many different people come together in such perfect, fluid harmony to learn, educate, or work is refreshing and it even reminds me that despite what we might see and hear on the news, such a thing as unity in diversity does exist. At RCC, people from all towns from near and far are

welcome regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, age, and religion. On RCC’s campus diversity is not only fostered but it’s something that is thoroughly celebrated. The college offers a wide range of clubs, committees, and events specifically aimed at exploring and honoring a variety of cultures. This month, for example, several committees are busy planning cultural events. The African-American History Month Committee was busy planning numerous events that celebrated and honored the achievements of African Americans and students here at RCC. On February 12 they hosted a viewing of the Ava Duvernay documentary, “The 13th,” which provides an in-depth look at the tangled relationship between our prison system and race. Next month, the college will honor the contributions of women by observing Women’s History

Month. On March 30, also in the Ellipse theater, there will be a discussion about the way our culture views and handles rape against women. This discussion will happen twice, first at 11am and then again at 1pm. March is also Irish Heritage Month at RCC, with many readings, screenings and discussions planned. One discussion focuses on the 69th Infantry Regiment, a famous infantry regiment of the United States Army that’s an Irish heritage unit. Rockland Community College celebrates what our current governmental administration is too afraid to accept, acknowledge, or appreciate. At RCC our differences are what brings us together. America is great because we are a diverse country and if you doubt the effectiveness, even the practicality of diversity, just look to RCC’s campus as an example of its effectiveness.

How My SuperBowl Predictions Came True Taron McBride

Super Bowl 51 was amazing and it was truly the best super bowl I’ve ever seen. Both Atlanta and New England played their hearts out. Super Bowl 51 was so intriguing to the point that both of these teams had dignity in themselves. Super Bowl 51 was so tremendous that it even went into overtime. Due to a late second half comeback, the Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady has proven himself to

be an elite player. This man literally crushed the Atlanta Falcons defense, constantly

forcing the ball downfield. Watching Tom Brady make that spectacular late fourth quarter

comeback gave me goose bumps. He is a phenomenal quarterback and he doesn’t back down at all. It is no wonder he is a five-time Super Bowl champion and four-time Super Bowl MVP. Before the Super Bowl even started, it was debatable who would win Super Bowl 51. Most people said the Patriots would win, but others thought it would be the Atlanta Falcons. This is not to mention that both teams were tied with the fewest turnovers in the League. Honestly, I knew this Super Bowl was going to overtime. SEE BOWL PAGE 3

West Virginia University is the Place for Me

Stacie Malgieri

Managing Editor

When choosing a college, you might wonder which one is the right one for you. I used to ask myself this question, months ago, when I was looking at colleges to transfer to. I dreamed about going to schools such as Penn State University and South Carolina University, only to realize that these schools were not for me, after I visited their campuses. I visited some schools with high hopes that I was going to absolutely love them. I had already made up my mind on where I wanted to go and looking at these schools on paper, I thought they were perfect for me. Boy, was I wrong. Walking onto the West Virginia University campus, the last school I thought would be for me, I fell head over

2

heels in love. This was one of the last schools on my list of where I wanted to transfer to after my two years at community college. While making the six hour trip from Suffern, New York, to the beautiful town of Morgantown, West Virginia, I wondered if this extensive trip would be worthwhile. Was this six hour drive for a school that was not at the top of my list even worth it? After six hours of long travels, stuck in the car with my parents and trooping through a blizzard, I finally arrived in West Virginia and it felt like home. The people were friendly at the hotel and restaurants we first adventured through in Morgantown, which made me feel extremely welcomed and loved even in my first moments visiting the state. For the first time in a long time, I had butterflies in my stomach and my eyes were wide open with anticipation.

The next day I woke up to look outside my hotel window to see that the ground was covered in white and I was positive that with my luck, the tour of the campus would surely be canceled. I had doubts that I would be able to have my tour and visit the college that I traveled six hours for, but when my parents and I arrived at the Welcoming Center we were surprised to find the tour was still on. My family and I were not the only ones to arrive for the scheduled tour that day. I was excited because not only were my travels worth it but my tour guide was actually a journalism major, just like me. My tour was personalized completely to me and it was making my heart flourish with feelings of home. Walking into the buildings I would be studying in for the next two years all the way up to stepping onto the football field that holds 64,000 people for my schools football games, I knew I had found my second home. I

found where I would be calling home for the next two years. I was extremely skeptical if I would ever be able to find the right school for me. I wondered how I was supposed to know what school would be right for me. I had experienced many tours of schools that I thought I would love only to be let down when they didn’t feel like home. I learned that sometimes things are not always what they seem, and you’ll never know unless you experience it for yourself. I learned a huge lesson from all of this—a lesson even bigger than just making sure you visit schools before making the choice of where you want to go. I learned that you need to try things sometimes that are out of the ordinary and that are not always for you because you might come to a realization, from feeling things that your mind doubted but your heart wanted.

Going Vegan is a Sure Way to Fight Global Warming Morgan Gray

News Editor

Are you wondering how you can help our environment in the face of government officials who deny the existence of climate change? With our new president denying the existence of the pressing issue of climate change, it is more important now than ever to do what you can to reduce your ecological footprint, or how much of nature you consume to support your lifestyle. It is scary that the leaders of our nation deny the existence of such a clear and daunting issue facing human beings around the world. Donald Trump has ordered the removal of pages relating to climate change on the White House website, which should only serve as more of an incentive to make as many personal changes as possible to help our planet. It is important for us in this time to remember that the environment is not in the hands of a single man but it is in all of our hands, each and every day of our lives. There are many things that can be done on a daily basis to reduce your ecological footprint and limit your effect on the earth but the most effective thing you can do is go vegan. Veganism is a lifestyle in which one chooses to exclude, as far as it is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation and cruelty to animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. Along with the health benefits of a vegan diet and the sparing of innocent

lives, going vegan can reduce your ecological footprint by 50 percent! Greenhouse gas emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide are powerful and cause the vast majority of climate change. Feeding a massive amount of grain and water to farmed animals only to kill, process, transport, and store their flesh is an extremely energy-intensive

process. Forests are cut down—forest which absorb greenhouse gases—in order to supply the land needed to raise these animals and grow the crops to feed them. Not to mention, the animals themselves and the manure they produce release even more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Burning fossil fuels such as gas and

oil produces greenhouse gases and it takes about 11 times as much fossil fuels to produce a calorie of animal protein as it does for grain protein. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has shown that animal agriculture is globally the single largest source of methane emissions and that methane is more than 25 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. The UN has also said that the meat, egg, and dairy industry is responsible for 65 percent of worldwide nitrous oxide emissions. From an Oxford University study, it was concluded that meat eaters are responsible for two times as many dietary greenhouse gas emissions daily than vegetarians are, and two and a half times as many dietary greenhouse gas emissions daily than vegans are. Moreover, researchers from Loma Linda University in California concluded that vegans have the smallest carbon footprint, generating a 41.7 percent smaller volume of greenhouse gases than meat eaters do. While there are a lot of things that we can do to reduce our carbon footprints on a daily basis, it is proven that the fastest and most effective way to address the very daunting issue of climate change is to reduce your meat consumption. Transitioning to a vegan diet will not only improve your personal health and save the lives of millions of innocent animals, but it will substantially benefit the fight against climate change. PETA offers a free vegan starter kit, and you can visit their website and learn more about how to go vegan today.

The Greatest SuperBowl Ever—I Saw it Coming BOWL FROM PAGE 1 I literally predicted the whole entire scenario. I predicted that the Atlanta Falcons would dominate in the first half, by scoring at least 28 points. Then later, that the New England Patriots would dominate in the second half, by reducing the Atlanta Falcons lead. Then I predicted that the game would be tied. The Atlanta Falcons would get the ball back with only 20 seconds left and late in the game Matt Ryan would beam the ball downfield to Julio Jones, only to have the ball intercepted. To be honest, my instincts were telling me that Super Bowl 51 would go into overtime. I remember telling everyone that it would and just so you know—it did. In the first half, Patriots running back Legarret Blount fumbled the football, causing the Patriots’ first turnover. That fumble gave the Falcons’ offense a chance to have possession of the ball. In the second quarter Devante Freeman ran the ball in for the Falcons first touchdown. After that play Quarterback Matt Ryan throws a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end, Austin Hooper. This increased the Falcons lead from 14 to 0. After this, the Patriots got the ball back, hoping that they could put some points on the bored. Until Tom Brady tossed an 82 yard pick six to defensive cornerback, Robert Alford. Oh, man! That was such a spectacular play. If the Falcons won he

would’ve became Super Bowl 51 MVP. In the second quarter the Falcons scored 21 unanswered points. As soon as the third quarter hit Matt Ryan again tosses a touchdown pass to running back Tevin Coleman. Patriot fans at that point were very nervous, believing that a comeback would be impossible since the Patriots were down by 25 points late in the third quarter. Already, the Falcons had a 28-point lead. Then suddenly the New England Patriots were coming back. Their defense dominated the game. Late in the second half Tom Brady scored two touchdowns and two, 2-point conversions. Julian Edelman made a spectacular catch. Late in the 4th quarter the game was indeed tied and the Patriots forced it to overtime. When the Patriots won the toss they immediately drove the ball downfield and scored a touchdown and history was made. No teams have ever come back from 25 points and then forced it to overtime. But the Patriots did. This game was truly amazing and Tom Brady got his fifth ring as a quarterback, breaking Joe Montana’s record. No quarterback has ever reached five Super Bowl rings! An anonymous Patriots fan said, “I don’t care if you don’t like Tom Brady, but you definitely have to respect him for the most amazing thing that happened in Super Bowl history. The best comeback the world has ever seen and we’re part of that.” 3

You Really Should be Watching “Black Mirror”

Stefan Sykes

Editor in Chief

When the British television show “Black Mirror” premiered back in 2011, audiences and critics alike were dazzled by the show’s startling social commentary and near-future stories that mirrored our present world of smartphones and technology. Season 3 of the science-fictionthemed show, which debuted this fall, has not failed to do the same and more. The anthology series, likened to shows like “The Twilight Zone,” has returned with six new captivating episodes, each one offering a new set of characters in a different place. This series of new episodes has continued with the show’s trend of offering audiences glimpses of worlds much darker than ours but also alarmingly similar to ours. Here is each episode of the third season of “Black Mirror” ranked from least to greatest. 6. “Playtest” Treading between the lines of sciencefiction and horror is a difficult task for any seasoned group of writers and “Playtest” is a testament to that. Breaking the mold set by previous episodes of “Black Mirror,” “Playtest” plays out more like a horror film with a slow, even strenuous build-up and cheap but thrilling scares. However, since this is “Black Mirror” and not “American Horror Story,” the episode is grounded in the concept of a futuristic video-game, one that probes your mind for information so that you can experience the game in a more personal and lifelike way. The protagonist of this episode is the childlike but good-meaning Cooper, an American stranded in London. To pay for his way back to The United States, Cooper agrees to partake in the mysterious trial 4

of the new video-game for some money. In proper “Black Mirror” fashion, things take a turn for the worst and Cooper finds himself entangled in technological nightmare. This episode definitely deviated from the usual themes of “Black Mirror” and for me it was a miss. It started out excruciatingly slow and the ending didn’t make up for that by any means. 5. “Men Against Fire” Malachi Kirby has become a favorite of mine and it was his perhaps his acting that alone saved this episode. Like “Playtest”, “Men Against Fire” experiments with topics not previously covered in the world of “Black Mirror.” The episode chronicles a soldier, played by Kirby, and a seemingly upright military organization. It doesn’t take long to realize that this military organization is up to something nefarious. I was confused with this episode at first as it frequently switched to a first-person view of the main character, something uncommon in the way stories are told in “Black Mirror.” Midway through the episode however, it became clear that this technique was deliberate so that the audience could see what the main character was seeing himself before and after his military-issued, implanted interface went haywire. In the long-awaited climax of “Men Against Fire,” the point of this story was revealed in a haunting and villainous monologue, leaving viewers wondering about the complex and interrelated themes of high-tech warfare and morality. 4. “Nosedive” “Nosedive” was a breath-of- fresh air in an especially dark installment of “Black Mirror” and the episode warmly reminded me of the show’s previous episodes “The Entire History of Us” and “Be Right Back.” The social commentary was clear from the beginning with

this episode and the story nosedived headfirst into the topic of social media, illuminating its effects on society and ourselves. “Nosedive” looked like a Tim Burton film, it was cute and quirky but underneath all of the fluff was a truly dark and twisted reality, one which is alarmingly similar to our reality. Lacie, the main character, cares way too much about what other people think about her and she goes to extreme lengths be likable in her pastel-drenched society. The only difference between us and Lacie is that Lacie lives in a society where your ranking on social media is not just fun and games but a status symbol, one that can allow or disallow you to be approved for housing, renting cars, and other privileges. This episode was light in tone and even comical at times, but at the root of it is a story that echoes the story of our modern society where social media can be the deciding factor in the friends we get, the opportunities we are presented with, and even the jobs we get.

in real life, but by the end of episode I had my “aha!” moment and it all fell into place. This episode was perhaps the most intriguing and twisted of the bunch and it would be number one on my list also if it were not for the fact that I absolutely loved the next two episodes.

3. “Shut Up and Dance” In some of the other “Black Mirror” Season 3 rankings that I’ve seen, many people chose “Shut Up and Dance” as their favorite episode. “Shut Up and Dance” doesn’t have state-of- the-art special effects or a production budget ala the latest “Star Wars” movie, but what this episode has is a great story that is executed so perfectly, you’ll find yourself dumbfounded by the time the credits start rolling. When teenager Kenny is unknowingly filmed through his computer’s webcam doing something private (I’ll leave it at that), he is blackmailed by hackers and caught up in a ring of other people similarly being blackmailed for their misconducts. I was a bit wary of this episode as it played out because I couldn’t imagine any of the events that happens in the story happening

1. “Hated in the Nation” “Hated in the Nation” deserves to be a movie and with its compelling, cinematic feel and an hour-and-a- half run time, it might as well have been a movie. This episode is Season 3’s gem. The episode starts out walking with the story being formulaic and a bit static, but then it takes off running with no sign of stopping. “Hated in the Nation” is a procedural crime-drama, another minor deviation from the typical “Black Mirror” episode, and it takes what shows like “Law and Order: SVU” do, look like child’s play. This episode effortlessly tackles the themes of social media, terrorism, the environment, and our innate drive to tear down public figures. If you’re thinking none of these topics relate to one another, “Hated in the Nation” will prove you wrong.

2. “San Junipero” “San Junipero” reminded me of why I fell in love with “Black Mirror” in the first place. The episode takes place all over the place—literally. From the 1980’s, to the ‘90’s, to 2000’s and so on, “San Junipero” is like a period piece on steroids and it works out better than you would imagine. The concept driving this episode is technology that allows a dead person’s consciousness to be uploaded to a cloud, or virtual reality, where they can live out their life postmortem, in their favorite era of choosing. This episode was stunning, from start to finish, and it’s concept is so engaging that I’ve found myself wondering what era I’m going to choose to spend the rest of my days in after I pass.

“Ultra Miami” Returns With a Great Lineup Stacie Malgieri

Managing Editor

This year Ultra Miami returns for its 19th annual year of an electronic dance music held at Bayfront Park in Miami, Florida. The festival had its first debut on March 13, 1999. It was originally held as a one day event but it has now flourished into one of the world’s biggest festivals of the year as a three-day long event. Ultra has been known to have big name DJ’s performing on the beautiful and breath taking stages set up all around the festival. The notable DJ’s performing at this year’s event include Major Lazer, Above & Beyond, Alesso, Carl Cox, Martin Garrix, Dj Snake, Tiesto and Steve Aoki. Many more DJ’s are to be announced in upcoming lineup reveals but this was still enough to have tickets sold out for the March 24-26 event. The lineup for this year’s Ultra Miami Festival has almost been enough for me to consider buying a ticket. More classical 90’s and early 2000’s EDM are mostly within the tech realm but they are making a huge comeback in the year of 2017. Taking a deeper look into this lineup and we are seeing electronic

dance music legends such as Carl Cox, Alesso and Tiesto making their own comebacks. Music lovers will appreciate the opportunity to be able to see some of these old-school DJ’s perform at the

Technology addiction is a concern of all generations-- or it should be. I was born in 1993. I actively use social media, but there are moments where I wish my phone would stop notifying me of messages and comments. Yet, instead of shutting off notifications or silencing my phone, I leave it as it were. Pressure exists to remain connected to the digital world. Common SenseMedia, a nonprofit “dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology,” found in a poll in 2016 that 50 percent of teens feel addicted to their phones. Forty-one percent of teens feel their parents get distracted by the devices and don’t pay attention when they are together. I can relate to the feeling of technology having elevated importance even during family time. I live with several relatives. I am often amused by the improving technical know-how of my aunt, a nurse who now enjoys commenting on both Trump support and family photo collage Facebook posts. On the other hand, I find my relatives’ dependence on Facebook like it were a tabloid to be slightly offputting. Sometimes, I like to recall my vacation in the Philippines during the summer of 2014. I did not have a phone there. I had a camera. I took pictures but mostly I don’t remember snapping photos. I

remember enjoying the experiences offered to me with a full heart. I had a laptop too, mainly to communicate on Skype with my boyfriend, but again, there were activities abound. I was away from our hotel and grandmother’s house enough that eventually, I shook off the anxiety of not having a phone connected to the Internet whenever I wanted, and just had fun. Until the next vacation, I’ll be posting pictures of my dog and boots on Instagram.

for electronic dance music. EDM is becoming bigger and bigger every year. Who knows where it will end up in the world this year, with the music that is to come?

Wearable Tech: It’s Built Into Your Clothes

Like many things today, fashion has evolved through time. The first fashion designer was a French draper named Charles Frederick Worth. He started his first fashion house in Paris and changed the game in fashion, in the early 1800’s. Before Charles Frederick Worth, there were only tailors and dressmakers that

Today society is greatly affected by technology and social media so it is no surprise that this has affected fashion. Every decade came with factors that played into the innovation of fashion whether those factors were social or economic. In the 1920’s for example, hemlines for women’s dresses became shorter and silhouettes became much looser and less restricting. Women were given rights, such as the right to vote, and they felt more empowered which reflected in the fashion
