Feeling the stress of summer ending? As the media continues to batter us with new figures about the general population suffering from work related stress, depression blues and the UK being in the bottom half of Europe's happiness ratings (Daily Telegraph), it is important to find the time to relax in order to survive the modern day assault on the senses.

It is widely agreed upon by fitness researchers and psychologists that exercise and meditation are two important methods of combating stress and contributing to a healthier lifestyle. Well how about trying an activity which combines both?

Tang Soo Do is a Korean martial art similar to Karate which not only keeps you fit and active, but also helps you to relax your mind, and find your focus - helping you deal mentally with the day to day stresses which confront you.

Forms or 'Hyungs' are one of the keys to this stress busting martial art. Performing these involves moving through a series of

blocking, striking or balancing moves which help you improve the fluidity and precision of your movements for better application.

There are several benefits in doing these sequences; improved fitness as the movements in the forms are physically demanding, better coordination as often complex motions are required to complete moves, and heightened concentration, which is an important contributor to relaxing your mind (Stephen Bodian Mindfulness Meditation).

The mindfulness aspect of performing the forms is often overlooked, yet is an important factor for relaxing your mind. As you concentrate on the quality of your movements, the troubles

of the day move to the back of your mind and are more easy to deal with when you return back to your normal activities.

If you are not a martial artist, you can reach a similar form of relaxation by counting your breaths as you breathe deeply, focusing on the coming and going of air.

Calling all Thrill-Seekers The popular trend creating a storm on the water...

Ever feel like you want the rush of blood from some fast action?

On the water? Want to be involved with little cost? Essentially catamaran sailing gets you out on the water, sailing with more speed than a yacht whilst being much more accessible for people to take up.

Catamaran Sailing or cat sailing for short is a relatively new sport dating back to the early 60’s and 70’s. Catamaran sailing now dominates the sailing world with the prestigious “Americas Cup”.

Cornish based sailing centre Windsport and Restronguet SC at Mylor Harbour in Cornwall have trained a number of successful world champions since the 1970’s and recently hosted the prestigious International C-Class Championships.

Keeping it Cornish, the current GBR Olympic squad has an “All Cornish” cat sailing teamTom Phipps and Zennor Pascoe sailing their performance catamaran named Kynsa (Cornish for first).

The Prices It’s all about the experience as a sport so the price doesn’t matter. If you’ve never done cat sailing go on an intro sail and if you like complete a short 2-5 day “learn to sail” course. With this skill, you can get your own craft and build your confidence.

The Experience Get on the water and give it a go! In words, you have the thrill of flying across the water with the hull in the air, wind in your face and spray flying past. But to do it justice you have to try.

In reality every sail and every person is different. The sport is a family sport for all to enjoy whatever the wind strength. Social sailing, family sailing, local club race of international regatta Catamaran sailing has so much on offer and a great experience you’ll never forget.

Speeds on the Water 30mph-100mph? It’s difficult to compare speeds on water to land as windspeed doesn’t correlate directly to the feel of speed you’d get on land. So if you’re sailing a Cat at 30mph... this would feel on the water as if you were travelling 60mph on land. Given good winds and going flat out you can get it to feel like it’s travelling at 100mph.

You're in Control Choose your day and out you go. Catamaran talk is almost always about the speed, excitement and challenge. But the sport can also be a gentle summer evening sail driven by a gentle breeze with room to layout on the trampoline to enjoy the stability and sun your face in the fading evening light. It’s your choice.

Jemma Simpson Sponsored by Nike, Team GB 800m squad runner, Road to Rio this month says hello to Jemma Simpson!

The background...

Growing up in Polgooth St Austell, Jemma lived a very active life being outdoors and exploring enjoying the countryside Cornwall has to offer taking regular family walks up to 12 miles. To this day you can see a mural painted in honour of Jemma in St Austell town centre.

Jemma first started athletics when she was 9-10 years old.

Making great friends and competing for her school and county gave her the excitement for the sport. Taking up gymnastics, and a county swimmer too Jemma was full of energy always competing and challenging herself to do more and be more.

A typical day?

Is quite boring! I need to eat, sleep, train, eat, sleep, train. I get up eat breakfast then train hard in the morning. Come home eat lunch, sleep in the afternoon for recovery. Then get up eat again, run again, eat again, then relax until bed time.

• Twice a week I train three times a day.

• Three days a week I train twice a day • Two days a week I train once a day.

Why the 800m?

It is long enough so it is not an all out sprint, but short enough that the pain is over with quickly!

How does Cornwall keep you motivated?

I like Cornwall because everyone gets behind someone who is doing well and offers their support or takes an interest in what they do. I have had many local sponsors from Cornwall and they have really helped me get to where I am today which I shall always be grateful for. People in Cornwall have always supported me, even through my hard-times.

Rio 2016?

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m aiming to qualify for Rio 2016. But I won't know whether I am in the team until a month before the actual games. That's the thing with this sport and something that I experienced with London 2012.

Do you relax?!

I try to chill out with friends, drink coffee, play games, read, paint, or watch TV. Outdoor activities which I love are put on hold as they require too much energy that would sap energy for recovery between training sessions. I did surprisingly enjoy fishing off the kayaks with my dad in Cornwall this summer. It was the first time i did it but we would catch the mackerel then I would take them home fillet them, season them, and eat them for dinner.

A low point?

Not getting selected for the London 2012 Olympics. My life time ambition taken from me, not because I hadn't achieved the qualifying time or finished top two at the trials but because the selector for the team decided to only take one girl for the 800m and leave three others out of the team. I always thought that in sport your destiny is in your own hands until that moment when I realized it comes down to decisions made by other people. I am still running but have slightly adjusted my approach and goals after this experience.

Who can do it?

Elite level sport it is filled with constant disappointment, constant losses, constant injuries and fatigue and times where you really doubt your ability. The success that is printed in the media is something very few people are privileged enough to experience. For every winner there has to be losers. If you have the drive that makes people

Set the bar as high as you can passionate about anything in life whether it is sport, business, family, charity work, art, helping people, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll stand a chance. Do you have a belief in the fact that you are good at what you do and you get enjoyment from the challenge of doing it? You may never win an Olympic gold, or make a million pounds, or help the amount of people that

Top Tip Set yourself a goal or a target and really try and hit that target. Once you get 4-6 weeks of consistent exercise in it gets a whole lot easier from there so stick at it and don't judge yourself until that much time has passed.

you thought you could or paint the Mona Lisa equivalent but you enjoy the challenge of what you are doing and set the bar as high as you can.

Inspiration for us all?

It is very important for people to get exercise each week. Not only is it good for every bodily function that happens inside you it also releases endorphins in your brain which make you feel happy. Changing your mindset towards exercise is

the most important thing and finding a way to do it that you enjoy. Your body quickly adapts to exercise so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy.

Who Inspires you?

I am inspired by anyone who sets out with a dream, ambition or goal and goes out to achieve that goal no matter what it is, no matter what walk of life and no matter what challenges they face along the way.

If we strip sport back down to basics let it be simple and FUN! No rigid rules, no strict times, no formalities, just pure simple fun.

Remember as a child when you could play freely for hours on end with no worries about the score reaching 5000 because you had so much energy to play endlessly?

Well Cornwall College Sports Makers are keen to promote this to their students, as well as everybody in Cornwall.

Led by Tamsin, Jamie and Jenni the three promote activity and sport / fitness across the County. With a unique twist on getting involved, the three are keen to push how sport is undertaken.

Tandemon the

Camel Trail

Looking for that extra something this autumn? How about the famous camel trail... on a tandem bike? Grab a mate,partner or family, take them along to Wadebridge and head off for the day in unison on a tandem cycle.

Words: Ian Pogonowski Admittedly this isn’t as extreme as sailing a catamaran, nor hand-gliding, but with a beautiful stretch of coastline, The Camel Trail is open most of the year for you to cycle and soak up the atmosphere so try it differently. It’s not as easy as you think.

OUTFIT Cornwall decided to give it a go venturing on the most popular section, cycling, in tandem, from Wadebridge to Padstow and back.

Ultimately the experience was great. You get twice as much power with two people cycling, the balance and trust between being in tandem is unique, and you have to maintain a level of awareness especially overtaking as you have another bike to factor in attached behind you...

We may have got caught up in a rain-storm, but this just added to the fun. Drying off in Padstow there’s nothing more satisfying than a particularly gentle but enjoyable weekend activity.

If you’re looking for a new way to experience the Cornish Coast line, we highly recommend the Camel Trail as an experience you’ll never forget.

The Watering Hole is a special venue that prides itself on its history and unique view. The cafe sits on a natural beauty spot that attracts everybody, especially the dog walkers.

You’re the only real Beach Bar in the UK? It’s a massive honour to be this. The Watering Hole has been here since the 1900’s, there’s nothing like this place anywhere else. When people come here for the first time they’re really taken aback by the experience.

26 year old Newquay Surfer and Model, Animal Team Rider, and genuinely lovely person, this month OUTFIT Cornwall spoke to Corinne to learn a little more about her motivations and inspirations.

Moving to Cornwall 12 years ago after a falling in love with family holidays, the Evans’ decided to make their dream a reality locating in Newquay - “it gets a lot of bad press but it has been my home and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. We have beautiful beaches, great waves and some brilliant locals”.

The Hard Times As with many great people they suffer set-backs. OUTFIT Cornwall was sad to hear that Corinne lost her father in 2011. “This is by far one of the hardest things I have ever had to overcome. It’s

something that you never get over and deal with but time is a great healer. I really questioned everything and even contemplated giving up my dream of being a surfer and model.”

So what pulled you through? “The want and need to make my dad proud took over and gave me more drive than ever to succeed”.

Luctus in nulla id Trained initially as a chef, Emma substituted the kitchen oil for the beach oil, stripped down, and got sweaty on the coast. This issue we looked to Emma McKay, a Cornwall based model / photographer.

Featuring in many high-profile mags, Emma has also worked in MMA as a ring-side girl, taken part in events such as the Royal Cornwall Show and Boardmasters.

A keen gym go-er...

“I LOVE Zumba! I also do weights and work on my stomach, squats and cross-trainer”

Overcoming a difficult time in life, we hope this will offer inspiration to others out there.

“If you enjoy what you do, do it” What inspires you to do more and be more?

“I’ve always been dedicated to anything I do and want to be the best. I work hard and invest in what I do. I guess Katie Price was a big inspiration to my modelling at first and now on the business side too. I manage my own photography studio and have a promotions and modelling agency - LetsPoseStudios.”

So what is it about modelling that you like?

“The travelling, meeting new people, receiving the edits and thinking god I look good lol I’ve always seen it as a business and I love my fans. I took a couple of years out due to health reasons, but my fans have found me again which is lovely.”

We learnt the Emma turned tea total during her career.

“As I have my own business, I can’t turn up to shoots drunk from the night before, it isn’t very professional.

Maybe I’m getting old ;) “

Some models have a bad rep...?

“Models and photographers get bad names, this is just jealousy or people looking at what you do differently... If you enjoy what you do, do it!”

Favourite Place in Cornwall and Why? “Padstow – I like to sit at the top of Rick Stein’s restaurant with a drink, then have a walk to the beach and head to Rick Stein’s fish and chips on the wall of the harbour - it’s gorgeous!”

Inspiration “Don’t let people get you down, don’t give up and enjoy life as much as possible. You only live once!”

Julia McIntosh is an exceptional Cornish based Photographer with stunning portrait work.

Trying to avoid the over processed look as much as possible, preferring to keep the image looking as close to when it first left the camera, Julia explains “I strongly dislike images that have been overly digitally manipulated and airbrushed. I try to maintain an element of 'keeping it real' with my images and I think this shows in my work.

A normal guy, who likes to party, play tennis, hang on the beach and sing songs... typical 19 year old in Cornwall. We caught up with Joss to find out more.

Growing up Growing up Ryan Giggs was Joss’s role model, the quality and finesse of Joss’s love for football struck the chord of music where Cornwall inspired him to do more and be more.

The supportive venues and audiences make a great place to play music. Inspired equally by greatness on the music side Stevie Wonder’s early 70’s music is an inspiration to Joss.

Back to basics I started busking in Truro when I was about 15 or 16 and playing paid gigs in the area. Busking is nice because you get to play to people who don’t go to pubs and or wine-bars, including younger school age people. Also if you play in places like Newquay, St Ives and Padstow in the summer you play to people from all over the world who are on holiday.

And this turned into songwriting?

Songwriting has become more important to me. In terms of inspiration I grew up listening to a lot of motown /stax, but now listen to lots of different things. My taste changes all the time, but I'm still into R&B and I'm interested in people like Frank Ocean, and Miguel.

Where does your support come from?

When I was little it was my family - but in recent years it’s become fans from across the world who contact me and say nice things about my music. Amazingly I've people in Australia, France, Spain and Brazil and other countries who follow me.

Who do people say you sound like?

In a way I'm still trying to find my own sound, but people say that my band is a bit like One Republic crossed with Maroon Five, The Script and James Morrison.

Book Review White is for Witching Helen Oyeyemi (2009) An original, odd and poetic novel, mixing British, African, American and Eastern European folklores with a story about being young and unsure. Heroine Miranda Silver is consumed, and consumes others, in her restless, perhaps possessed, search for a self not conditioned by her illness (pica, a condition in which she obsessively eats chalk and plastic), her fears, gender or familial expectation.

The novel is about identities, homes, migration, travel and flight. One of the characters is even a house. A creepy, unpredictable flirtation with gothic conventions that isn't afraid to be ambiguous and haunting.

Each month we review the difference between living in a city compared to living in Cornwall.

We’ve compared summer and jobs in the past, so this month we’re comparing what will become a trend for most of us now... Shopping.

The Differences Type of Shops:

In a City... You have the high-street brands, where people shop amongst the masses of other people. Don’t you find everybody kind of looks the same... Walking in the same clothes shops, the coffee shops, the food stops?

In Cornwall... You have the high-street brands too, but the majority of shops are unique and independent retailing clothes, food and drink that has individualism put into the heart of the product making people unique and independent as a result.

Buildings to Shop: In a City... You have the malls, the big streets, the bustle of people racing in the sales.

In Cornwall... You have the unique high-street where you can see an art gallery next to an independent fashion shop next to a hairdresser next to an antique shop.

Experience of shopping: In a City... You race around, fighting people for space and not having time to choose what’s fitting properly. It’s a stress nightmare!

In Cornwall... You have time to shop in a few shops before making a purchase, influenced by atmosphere as well as item quality.

The reason behind shopping is the same, but the quality and tone of shopping is different.

Who Will Win the Cornish Sports Awards?

Held at the Headland Hotel at the start of November, you’ll be able to see who wins what thanks to the sports successes and contributions over the past year.

Now in its eighth year, the Cornwall Sports awards aims to reward and recognise those involved in sport, coaching and management.

Ben Skinner Wins Silver Following a 5 day event, Ben Skinner went on to win silver in the ISA World Longboard Championships.

Dominating the waves from day 1 we all knew Ben would be there or thereabouts and he proved us what Cornwall Surf is made of.

The horses enjoy the surf at Polurrian

Beating South Africa and Brazil in the final, SkinDog got a total score of XXXXX to win the 2nd on the podium behind France.

Ben Skinner managed to raise funds for this tournament through CrowdFund Cornwall which saw him raise £5625 to pay for the Team GB trip to compete in Peru.

With the quality shown by the UK Team we hope to see Great Britain represented further in the future.

Who’s up for Badminton?

Fancy yourself playing badminton?

Well this October Truro Badminton Club will be letting anybody play in their open coaching sessions thanks to Badminton England.

Why? The aim is to get more people involved in the sport, and the club believes that the open coaching will give people an insight into the sport.

Melissa Reid wins again!

The third time in 3 months Melissa Reid has won yet more medals!

Winning gold in both the World Triathlon championships, and the aquathon championships Melissa has been in fine form.

Reid’s dedication to performance saw her improve following last year where she won silver.

Getting gold this year showed remarkable spirit and training down with Gylly SLS.
