Why Aprons?

This year Noosa Open Studios is proud to announce the support of local chef and food-arst Ma Golinski, who is the event patron.

The apron, which is used by arsts and by chefs during their creave pracces, is an iconic symbol of the link between art and food. This combinaon promotes the quintessenal experience of our picturesque Noosa region.

Much more than a domesc item, arsts were challenged to create aprons which are unique pieces of art, collectable, a fashion item. Check the amazing result here. They will certainly impress your friends at any dinner party you may offer.

For a chance to get one for your own, come to our fundraising event. This is an excing and unique event not to be missed.

Ma Golinski (patron) and Simone Z Leao (president), Noosa Open Studios 2023

Title: Bush Bot

Arst: Alison Comber

Peregian Beach, NOS Art Trail 2

“My theme this year for Noosa Open Studios is to turn cake tins into sculptures with their own unique personality by adding kitchen utensils from a bygone era. My Inspiration for the apron came from a small scenic cake tin which was painted by Peter Trusler, a well-known Australian Artist in 1978 showing the Australian landscape. The robot I made is called Bush Bot.”

Title: Coral Apron

Arst: Beatrice Prost

Tinbeerwah, NOS Art Trail 3

“I am inspired by the coral and reef life. The painting of a repetition of organic patterns expresses the way corals are the building blocks for our endangered reefs.”

Title: Spring Fresh

Arst: Bronwyn Barton

Doonan, NOS Art Trail 3

“I am inspired by the fresh greens of a vege garden and hunting through the abundant growth in search of its pickings.”

Title: Tea Tree Bay 3234

Arst: Dale Leach

Doonan, NOS Art Trail 3

“I took 400 photos of The Noosa Coastal Walk last February as a storm brewed up from Teewah Beach. I then made paintings from these images and this apron is another version inspired by that walk.”

Title: Trees Have Sprung

Arst: Giuliana de Wis

Sunrise Beach NOS Art Trail 2

“My great adventure of the Queensland Outback. This piece of art was the inspiration that I painted beside the billabong along the Paroo River in Eulo Qld Outback.”

Title: The Secret Garden

Arst: Jan Murphy

Doonan, NOS Art Trail 3

“This artwork is based on the book I loved as a small girl of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett. When orphaned Mary Lennox comes to live at her uncle's great house on the Yorkshire Moors, she finds it full of secrets. Then, Mary discovers a secret garden, surrounded by walls and locked with a missing key. One day, with the help of two unexpected companions, she discovers a way in. Mary and her companions then work to bring it back to life.”

Title: Hunng Black Gold

Arst: Jane Powell

Weyba Downs, NOS Art Trail 2

“Wonderful truffles ... This apron is inspired by the characters and story of my new children’s book of the same name. The owner of this apron will also receive a copy of my book.”

Title: Evoke: first point, Noosa

Arst: Jayne Hodgson

Peregian Beach, NOS Art Trail 2

“Grateful to be living in this beautiful part of the world, and with walking/hiking as a major pastime, I like to get out in our glorious natural environment most days. The walk up through the National Park is a favourite and I never tire of the ever-changing vista, colours and the feelings they evoke. I love recording my experience of surroundings in a visual way, working loosely; from memory, interpretations, impressions and emotional responses.”

Title: Noosa Main Beach” Celebrang Surf Life Saving Australia

Arst: Jeanee Smith

Peregian Beach, NOS Art Trail 2

“My inspiration is always abundant for Noosa Main Beach. I enjoy watching holiday makers, Noosa Nippers and the NSLS. The turquoise ocean makes a beautiful backdrop and compliments the vibrant energy of colours on the beach. You will often find me under a tree doing some sketching or painting for reference that I take back to the Studio. Working with my palette knife, I paint luscious tactile paintings that locals feel proud to behold and visitors take home a special holiday memory.”

Title: Sunset The Noosa Spit

Arst: Jenny Hines

Noosaville, NOS Art Trail 1

“Inspiration for the design came to me whilst sitting at The Noosa Spit watching the sun set with family and friends (with a glass of vino of course). The red sun reflecting on the water as it set is exaggerated and abstracted to form the design.”

Title: Open Skies

Arst: Juanita Van Den Bergh

Cootharaba, NOS Art Trail 5

“Motivated by the enormity of our skies and the vastness of our oceans, the ever changing colours and forms that linger only seconds to tease our imagination …. My new collection, exemplified by this apron, explores what we really see when we stare into the clouds and depths of our foam covered oceans.”

Title: Montville Village

Arst: Julie McPhee

Sunshine Beach, NOS Art Trail 2

“I took a series photos of Montville a few years back and it has taken me until now to render them onto a canvas (apron). In the meantime, it seems some shops have changed hands and/or moved so I guess it could be described as pre- COVID nostalgia - with some surviving traders.”

Title: My Garden Path

Arst: Kelly Williams

Pomona, NOS Art Trail 5

“It is inspired by my garden and life in the Noosa Hinterland. It includes some of my favourite natives; Wattle, Grevillea, Eucalyptus and Protea. I wanted the flowers and foliage to look as they would if you were wandering through the bush or through a native garden. The apron is hand painted with Permatex Aqua fabric ink. It has been heat-set and can be used and laundered as an apron.”

Title: Flowering Gum

Arst: Kerry Norman

Eumundi, NOS Art Trail 3

“The Inspiration was the nature on my hinterland property, with the beautiful leaves and flowers on the trees and wanting to record it in a fun and exciting way. So enjoying the outdoors and by using the Cyanotype process, I created a beautiful Prussian blue print using the sun to develop it, then added a touch of water colour. These aprons are fully wash and wear.”

Title: Wale

Arst: Kerry Norman

Eumundi, NOS Art Trail 3

“The Inspiration was the Nature on my hinterland property, with the beautiful leaves and flowers on the trees and wanting to record it in a fun and exciting way. So enjoying the outdoors and by using the Cyanotype process, I created a beautiful Prussian blue print using the sun to develop it, then added a touch of water colour. These aprons are fully wash and wear.”

Title: A Porthole to Art

Arst: Kym Henkee-Poole

Tewann, NOS Art Trail 1

“This artwork was inspired by the beauty and stillness of the undersea world and the surprise of coming across creatures at depth. For fabulous colours that really pop when illuminated by a torch, or perhaps submarine lights, I couldn't go past the coral trout. Not to mention that they are also lovely when served on a platter.”

Title: Galacc Light

Arst: Lee Birch

Cooroy NOS Art Trail 4

“I was inspired to use colours symbolising sea, sand, sunlight, and rock on the apron (as my canvas). By choosing to paint the whole apron using a deep ocean blue, I was able to accentuate the lighter colours of gold, yellow light and copper against the deep ocean blue of the canvas. It’s these contrasting colours, combined with the tranquillity of the sea and sky, which always brings me to a place of awe when gazing out to sea from the Noosa National Park walk and inspire much of my painting.”

Title: 2 Heads 2 Hearts

Arst: Lorna Goldring & Dale Leach

Marcus Beach & Doonan, NOS Art Trails 2 & 3

“What happens when an abstract painter and a landscape painter collaborate inspired by the landscapes and colours of the Bays of Noosa? An artwork which is more than a sum of the parts.”

Arst: Lucy Laino

Tewann, NOS Art Trail 1

“The coastal walk ignites my senses and memories, intertwining past and present. Each step becomes a dialogue with nature, guiding my creative process to capture and preserve those fleeting moments. Each step evokes a sense of contemplation and fosters an appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.”

Title: Noosa Naonal Park Flora

Title: Table Meets the Sea

Arst: Nicole Allen

Black Mountain, NOS Art Trail 4

“My inspiration came from a visit to Woorim Beach, Bribie Island where I was able to capture a beautiful ocean sunset. The Asian dish with chopsticks is inspired by my son. The red wine I enjoy sharing with family has a label capturing a saying my uncle who died this year: ‘love, laugh and live’. The oysters are inspired by my childhood where I would visit the rugged beaches of NZ. The wooden table is inspired by picnic tables scattered across beaches where families and friends congregate to relax and enjoy the ocean scenery, eat, drink, and relax.”

Title: The layers of the lake

Arst: Noreen Flood

Cooroibah, NOS Art Trail 5

“Living by Lake Cooroibah inspires my artwork with its many layers and crystal waters. Images appear from tidal changes to shapes and forms which are represented by markmaking and texture using mixed medium. The apron has an image of my work using photo transfer finish which is wearable and gently washable.”

Title: Azure Kingfisher

Arst: Paulus Kooij

Doonan, NOS Art Trail 3

“Usually, I use a subject with some hidden message to the observer. I love nature but also see the amount of damage inflicted on it. Twice over the past years, an Azure Kingfisher flew against the window of our house. One got killed. They are so beautiful and fragile. Birds need to fly. I added water and a stormwater drain to highlight the need to keep our waterways clean. Instead of the drain concrete cover from Australia, I painted a new one based on a wrought iron drain cover from Turkey.”

Title: Kiss the Cook

Arst: Sara Bell

Pomona, NOS Art Trail 5

“The image I used was from a photo I took at a wildlife rehab centre at Glastonbury, while my son volunteered there.”

Title: Have a Grape Time

Arst: Saren Dobkins

Tewann, NOS Art Trail 1

“A lazy day, the sun is shining, flowers are blooming, the cat is hiding in the warm grass and the wine is flowing. Put on your apron and start creating a feast to celebrate all the good things.”

Title: Tension

Arst: Simone Z Leao (aka Outer)

Cooran, NOS Art Trail 5

“My artwork is autobiographical and as a textile artist, my medium is fabric. This piece explores the tensions between opposite colours, changing shapes, and contrasting textures. It is an exercise of finding beauty and harmony among chaos.”

Title: Passion for Cooking

Arst: Sonia Begley

Tewann, NOS Art Trail 1

“My inspiration for this project was my own passion for cooking good food and growing it. I walk past our passionfruit vine most mornings which is growing steadily on my way to our herb garden, along with potted lemon and lime trees. Garden to plate is such a satisfying way to cook and eat and who doesn't love passionfruit freshly spooned onto ice-cream.”

Title: Uluru Glimpses

Arst: Trevor Purvis

Cooroy, NOS Art Trail 4

“Inspired by my favourite painting destination.”

Master Arst Experiences

The ‘Master Arst Experiences’ will give the winners the opportunity to spend a day in the studio of their favourite arst doing art together. This is the most exquisite opportunity to trully meet the arst, talk about art, to get a personal insight on the creave arsc process, and take home a piece of art.

The experience is valid for one year from the fundraising event, with the date and me to be agreed between the arst and the winner. Check with the arst what to bring for the day.

In 2023 we are offering 5 Master Arst Experiences!

Master Arst Bronwyn Barton

Doonan, NOS Art Trail 3

Bronwyn has established herself as an admired contemporary arst here on the Sunshine Coast. Her semi abstract botanical artworks express her close connecon to her bushland environment. They are her response to the posive and negave shapes, the textures, lines, shadows and reflecons she sees all around her. Bronwyn's use of colour, expressive brushstrokes and mark making result in artworks that are striking from a distance but provide so much more to explore when you get in close. Working from her home studio in Doonan, Bronwyn also runs popular weekend workshops.

During your Master Arst Experience you will: wander the garden surrounding the studio exploring the shapes, textures, lines, shadows that abound; explore mark making techniques that express the organic nature of the bush garden; dive into some colour mixing. Bring your own canvas, some paints and brushes to begin an artwork. (all other materials supplied)

Master Arst Carol Watkins

Black Mountain NOS Art Trail 4

Carol has been working with ceramics for 18 years and has exhibited in a number of galleries on the Sunshine Coast, including Caloundra Regional Gallery, Noosa Regional Gallery, Gympie Regional Gallery having twice been accepted a finalist in the Du Reitz Art Awards, Cooroy Buer Factory Arts Centre and Pomona Railway Gallery.

She favours alternave firing methods such as saggar, raku, and naked raku, with firings quite unpredictable, and most glaze free. Considerable experimentaon creates an immense sense of ancipaon with varied atmospheric condions affecng the outcome. It is fascinang how the one raku glaze can be quite different in separate firings, depending on the atmosphere in the kiln and in the reducon container. One thing is guaranteed …….. no two pots will ever be exactly the same.

Master Arst Charloe Wensley

Peregian Beach, NOS Art Trail 2

I created my first large expressive work at age 4, on the living room wall, having been le unsupervised with only a limited supply of paper and a box of crayons. I've been exploring my personal visual language as a form of communicaon ever since.

I spent hours as a child absorbed in drawing, but experimenng with new ways to expand my creave horizons began in earnest in my late teens, encouraged by my high school art teacher to explore sculpture and large scale painng. In subsequent years I believed I was desned to be an illustrator as I returned to my drawing pracce aer school and developed a passion for wring and illustrang picture book stories for children.

Aer finding myself wholly unsuited to a Diploma in Adversing, I came to art college in my twenes and there, I found a love of mixed media and collage along with methods of construcon, being exposed to metalwork and woodwork as part of my degree.

I returned to my 2D pracce, working with oils and acrylics, aer emigrang to Australia from the UK in 2001. Leng go of representaonal work I began to immerse myself in abstracon as a way to freely explore emerging personal narraves and sele into an enduring and sustainable conversaon with my innate creavity.

Global wanderings have infused my visual aesthec with a love of rich colours; texture and ornament; structures and forms; and the contrast between natural and constructed environments.

Diversity of human experience and the reality of unique personal narraves have always held a parcular resonance for me and these thoughts are never far from my mind as I paint.

Master Arst

Tracey McCallister

Doonan, NOS Art Trail 3

Tracey Lee makes handmade journals using tea and coffee-stained papers, handmade papers, vintage lace, silk ribbons, and other handmade ephemera. Her journals are beaufully craed and can be used for journaling, drawing, painng, note taking, travel diaries, etc. Each journal is a unique piece made with great aenon to detail, reflecng Tracey Lee's passion for creang beauful things. Even though they are works of art themselves, they are only just the beginning, a canvas for you to add your creavity and story.

Please come and enjoy a day with me as we create a handmade journal. You don't need to bring anything with you except your enthusiasm, a creave spark, and an appete. By the end of the session, you'll have your own mini journal and a set of new skills to connue creang and adding to it. We'll also indulge in a delighul lunch featuring fresh produce from my organic vegetable garden.

Master Arst Trevor Purvis

Cooroy, NOS Art Trail 4

Trevor is an award winning arst who believes that the Australian countryside is a never ending source of creave inspiraon. He travels the enormous extremes of deserts and beaches searching for those moments of wonderment. The subtle variaons of colour and topography are always very different to anywhere else in the world and well worth the observaon and exploraon.

He really discovered outback Australia aer discarding adversing and aending the Naonal Art School in Sydney, this in turn led he and his wife Beryl on a two year off-road Australia odyssey. This culminated in a successful solo exhibion at the Atwell Gallery in Perth. He now paints full me at his studio in Cooroy surrounded by the verdant Noosa Hinterland.
