This Lookbook presents Outer’s 2023 debut collection, which has been presented at the runways of Cairns Fashion Week 2023,, Australia, and New York Fashion Week 2023 (Times Square), USA.

Designer

Simone Z Leao (aka Outer) is a textile and mixed-media artist and designer based in Australia.

Her creative work focuses on the space that separates the inside and the outside of an individual. This layer carries the tension between the private and the public, the uniqueness of the individual and the collectiveness of the society and the environment in which they are immersed.

Clothing and fashion are intrinsic elements in that space, and with them people can expose, hide, express themselves or impersonate their alter ego.

Textiles

Outer starts her creative process in fashion through the design of textiles.

Her work transposes some of her artwork, mostly pencil drawings on canvas, into patterns and prints onto fabric.

Outer also experiments with the creation of three-dimensional textures on textiles by combining traditional fabric manipulation techniques, such as smocking and shirring, with her own fabric patterns and innovative new perspectives.

Collection

Outer’s fashion design comes to life as a response to her textiles’ patterns and textures,.

From the textiles, Outer follows on an unconventional sculptural process of garment construction.

Making use of folding, draping, and pattern alignment, with minimum seams, she aims to create elegant and comfortable garments which enhance the visual power of the textiles and the story telling behind them.
