Ben Wratten on medal night

Most of the important stats see these teams' neck and neck, however Powelltown average an extra 17 hit outs per game (2.3 to advantage), whilst Kinglake is ‘king’ of the 1%ers, with an extra 15 per game, averaging whopping 71 1%ers. It will be interesting to see if Kinglake can match Powelltown for the full match this time, or if Joel Perry and Michael Fowkes are too strong for the tight defence of Kinglake.

It was through star forwards Joel Perry(3), Chris Moreland(3) and Michael Folkes that afflicted scoreboard damage for the victors, whilst Vice Captain and star midfielder Bailey Robinson kicked two for Kinglake and amongst the best players yet again, with Lesley Adam’s also chipping in for two.

final matchup that many would have seen as reasonably predictable, the Semi final top of the table clash two weeks ago produced an enthralling contest from start to finish, with the lead changing by the end of each quarter. Whilst the lead changes weren’t drastic by any means, the handful of lead changes set the final quarter up for a nail biting finish. However, it was Powelltown kicking the 5.3 to Kinglake’s zero to finish the game after trailing by 10 ten points at 3QT.

Whereas, Powelltown comfortably have the strongest forward line, with gun Joel Perry averaging over four goals a game and Michael Fowkes who averages above two goals a game himself. These two, alongside their elite midfield of gun ruckman Ben Wratten (27.3 hit outs per game), Russel Cowan and Sam Meadows, are the reason that Powelltown has outscored even Kinglake who are second for points for, by 306 which is a tick over 20 per match.

Although both sides were a step ahead of the rest of the competition, it’s a tale of two methods. Kinglake have the tightest of defences, headlined by Riley Kennedy, Ben White and Matthew Coen, whilst also having the second strongest forward line with Damien Pywell the go to man, having kicked 44 goals in the H&A season.

“This Sunday is going to be a tight one, been 2 on 2 for the year against Kinglake so it will be a good competition decider this Sunday.” Kinglake representative Matthew Coen on medal night “It would mean a lot for us to win this premiership, especially having our supporters around for a long time with some past players never playing in a premiership. It’s very exciting for us! It is always going to be a good contest against Powelltown.”

“After two years with no finals in the league, it is a thrill to be involved in this Division 2 Grand final day. We have had some tough battles against Kinglake throughout the year and we know we need to at our best for the opportunity to win the game.” Kinglake medal winner Justin Banbury on medal night

Damien Egan and Ashley Taylor are the two focal points up forward Warburton Millgrove, with 34 and 24 goals respectively with stars Marcel Kocher, Damien Ferguson and Joshua Read looking to propel their side to victory. If Egan and Taylor have silver service, then that will go a long way to taking out the Premiership.

With the H&A meetings between the two, never being decided by any more than three goals, highlighting the closeness between the two.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This season has been a two horse race, with the chasing pack, being left behind in the dust. Warburton Millgrove went through the whole season undefeated, whilst Kinglake’s only losses came at the hands of Warburton Millgrove. The top 9 goal scorers during the H&A season all come from these two sides, which provides an even stronger indication as to how strong these two sides are.

lopsided Semi Final between these two should not discourage and Kinglake supporters as it is not an accurate reflection of the gap between them.

“There’s been some tight games against Warburton during the year, having a 20 point loss a few weeks ago and then losing by a fair bit in the first final, but the vibe is still good around the club and we’re just looking forward to getting out there.”

Whilst Kinglake’s hopes rely on consistent goal scorers in Brendan Howlett (32), Brent Freeman (24) and Justin Banbury (24 from 11 games), with gun mid Jamie Chalmers (rated elite for contested mark with 4.5 per game and intercept marks) and skipper Andrew Griffiths hoping to be pivotal in this affair.

Will the semi final result hinder Kinglake’s confidence or will they make this into an old fashioned arm wrestle.

Although the closeness of their H&A meetings, the blowout in the Semi Final, shouldn’t be swept under the rug by Kinglake.

ThePREVIEWextremely

Although not indicative of the closeness between the two sides all season, it’s a sign that if you’re off by even a little bit, that the opposition can capitalise on that.

Albeit, comedically inaccurate Warburton Millgrove were still able to stroll into a victory, dispatching Kinglake to the tune 46 points, with their seven goals all coming from individual goal kickers, a stat that would please their coach.

FINAL THOUGHTS Warburton Millgrove’s coach Nat Petrucev

Broadford’s coach Ash Chapman "We are excited at the opportunity to play in a Grand Final, our team has worked so hard on and off the court to make this happen. It has been 14 years since our club has had an A Grade netball team in a final. We know that to be the best, we have to play against the best, so we can't wait to play against such a talented opponent like Warburton."

This sets up as an intriguing contest with plenty of star power on both sides despite Warburton Millgrove heading in as firm favourites.

“Warburton Millgrove A grade look to top off an undefeated season with one last win. This week’s grand final will be a display of skill, athleticism and utter determination as we come up against the strength that is Broadford. We are looking forward to showcasing our depth across the court and hopefully walk away with the win. Go Burras!!”

“This year I have had a strong team from the first round. Coming out strong and setting the standard high. Being undefeated all year. But Broadford showed us they want this just as much as Powelly does. So, we will have play hard, come out strong and hold our position.”

My girls: With a year that was filled with injury, illness and loss of players, the key group of girls has let nothing stand in their way, grabbing this opportunity with two hands. They have taken absolutely everything in their stride this year and they are so hungry for victory and success. My team is filled with such great leaders, and I am so thankful to have each and every one of them in our team. Their knowledge and leadership has shone through right from the start and highlighted by the great work of our captain, Natalie Fletcher. I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done without her this year. Whatever happens on Sunday, I am so proud, humbled and excited to be able to have coached this team. Let’s go Roo Girls.”

“The game itself: We know it is going to be tough, Powelltown has set the bar the whole season. They finished top of the ladder for a reason and definitely deserve to be in this grand final. Their skills and ability to play with one another is second to none however I think if we play with the poise and experience, we have and mix it with the momentum we have gained then it will be a tight one and go down to the wire. I know my girls are ready for the fight and will leave absolutely nothing on that court on Sunday and I cannot wait to see what they have to bring.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Broadford’s coach Amanda Rothwell

head in as hot favourites against a strong Broadford outfit despite this being a top of the table clash and rightfully so, as they have the wood over Broadford this season winning all four of their contests, including the semi final.

Sam Murty (463) (first in the comp), Tayla Morton (269) and Nicole Hajder (234) will look to shut Broadford out of the game, all proving to be dangerous in attack, whilst they will also need to quell Broadford’s Kate Berger. Will Powelltown get back to their best and take care of Broadford or will Broadford fight out another ripper of a final?

Having said this, the semi final was a nailbiter with Powelltown only saluting by four points. This should give Broadford a reason to believe, as previously they went down by 38, 21 and 19 points to ladder leaders.

It is to one’s surprise that the two highest scoring teams are playing off in the Grand Final. Both teams have scored over 700 goals, miles ahead of the chasing pack, with even the 3rd placed Broadford with 155 less goals than Powelltown. However, heading into this contest, Warburton Millgrove sit undefeated, with three of their four matches against Powelltown being comfortable victories.

FINAL THOUGHTS

“After finishing a full season post covid, this week’s grand final has been a well earned feat for Warburton Millgrove’s C grade side. It’s sure to be a battel of the best as we take on Powelltown and look to claim bragging rights against our cross town rivals. As coach I am excited to see one final display of pure perseverance and grit from the girls and to hopefully walk away with the win. Go Burras.”

“Our C grade are excited about heading into the grand final against Warburton Millgrove on Sunday. They have been a very tough competitor through the whole season. But our girls have worked hard all season to get where we are. We hope that it is a great game and are determined to finally achieve the win.”

PREVIEW

For Warburton Emily Hay (GA) and Melanie Hancock (GS) have proven to be a handful for opposition defences, with 361 and 347 goals during the H&A season, respectively. Bianca Fraser(C) has been of high importance this season and was among the best when they met in the Semi Final. So was gun Courtney Irwin (GD) and Melanie Hancock Powelltown(GS).will be intent on getting the ball in the hands of gun April Stanley who amassed a whopping 525 goals during the H&A season, leaving Nicki Cole (GK) from Warburton Millgrove’s work cut out. Caitlyn Parker will also be vital if Powelltown are to trump the ladder leaders. Will April Stanley’s prowess be enough to overcome a more well-rounded Warburton Millgrove outfit.

Warburton Millgrove’s coach Selina Fotia

FINAL THOUGHTS

“Our Under 17’s have had a really pleasing year, with this being the first year that AFNC have had this age group it has been really exciting to see how the girls have improved and grown from the first round. With a great squad of 12 girls who can be easily rotated into all positions it is exciting for our club to see them progress into the senior teams in the coming years. The club is really looking forward to Sunday’s game and with how the Under 17 competition has played out this year it is sure to be a close and exciting match.”

are we treated to a Grand Final between 2nd and 4th spot on the ladder.

Spearheaded by Eliza Gesler (140) and Emily Irwin (111), Alexandra have been a strong team all season, albeit not the best during the H&A season, but not far off either. However, Warburton Millgrove had an up and down season, still managing fourth spot on the ladder. The pair have played three times and even though Alexandra have come out on top each time, the last two encounters were nailbiters, going down by 3 and 2 points, respectively. This should instil and fuel belief for Warburton Millgrove as they know what it takes to match it with Alexandra. Warburton Millgrove will be looking to Taya Humphrey to score heavily, whilst they will hope Lucas Rush can quell either Gesler or Irwin. Wing pairing Amarli Weir(WA) and Layla Ata(WD) were important last time these two played and could prove pivotal. This one really could go either way, with a nail biter looking to ensue.

“Our team has come a long way since their first game, their improvement over the season has been incredible, it’s a credit to them how far they have come they have worked hard to be here. We look forward to watching our players fight hard as they go into this game as the underdogs. Go Burras!!”

clash between for the premiership between Powelltown and Warburton Millgrove has arrived.

In what sets up as no less than a mouth watering contest, this Grand Final will have fans holding their breath.

Powelltown’s only losses are at the hands of Warburton Millgrove and only one of Warburton Millgrove’s losses have not been inflicted by Powelltown.

Warburton Millgrove’s coach Leah Ashton

“Firstly, I am very appreciative to the other teams that made it possible to continue a D grade competition this year. Coming into a challenging season and with some unfinished business from last year, the commitment of this wonderful group of ladies and their support of each other has been second to none. Now all the hard work has paid off and we have a well deserved opportunity to play in the Grand Final. Although we will be coming up against a formidable opponent, I have all confidence that everyone is ready to give it their all and play their hearts out on the day!”
