Well, what a year of football and netball for the Outer East and additionally celebrating 20 years of netball competition.
The year commenced with high aspirations and much jostling for position. Our clubs, through the development of strategic plans, self-reviews and internal analysis, began to question their belonging and long term positioning in the Outer East competition.
Furthermore, clubs wanted clarification and comfort on the direction and sustainability of the competition. Clearly, the constant club movement over the years, both in and out of our competition had taken its toll, with clubs questioning our identity and their future within the competition. Although extremely concerning at first, this healthy review by our clubs, certainly created some turbulence for the board and management to work our way through. Due to this disruption to business, we embarked on a collaborative path with our clubs trying to understand the plight of each club and actively listening to concerns, gripes, opportunities and suggestions for improvement. Through this process the board and management were provided with some very clear direction and recommendations from our clubs.
Accordingly the board addressed this disruption conducting a club survey, and as a result we were gifted a mandate to work with clubs and neighbouring competitions over the following 12 months to formulate a new plan that focused on what is best for football and netball in the region. Simultaneously, AFL Victoria and all competitions within Victoria signed a charter to work in the best interests of football in the region. Being granted these opportunities, the board and management have been working diligently with our neighbouring competitions to take a forensic view on just what is possible for the eastern region of Melbourne and how our football and netball can thrive in a broader competition.
To meet this challenge we strengthened the board, appointing new board members Mark Gladman and Steve White. We met with all our club presidents to understand the temperature of our competition, and to take on board all their concerns and ideas. Since then, we have progressed relationships with neighbours, Southern FNL, Eastern FNL, South East JFL and West Gippsland FNL. We look forward to reporting back on the progression of these initiatives in the near future.
From an operational perspective, again I say what a great year for Football and Netball in the region. In 2024 our premier division football was recognised as the second most competitive competition in the state. In 2025, again we have been enormously competitive in the senior competitions. Meanwhile our netball goes from strength to strength, greater numbers, more players, more teams and greater competition. Junior football is also thriving with increased attendances, whilst women’s football is powering along. Our umpiring is recruiting well, and vast improvements have been evident through the 25 season.
Our highlights package for 2025 is indeed impressive; Media and communications is the envy of every competition, our Volunteer Recognition night was espoused by AFL Victoria as a brilliant initiative in rewarding those that give to our game, our support of North East Blaze netball is considered an A grade partnership, our Women’s Leadership and Networking Lunch is highly respected and applauded by sponsors, supporters and government, our finals were a roaring success with over 15,000 attendances across the competition, and finally our Gala Awards night was a tremendous celebration for the year that was.

On the financial front, I am happy to report that we have had another successful year, although business experienced a small loss for the year.
This loss is a direct result of our previous commitment to capital investment in the Kilsyth Centre of Excellence. It should be noted that price increments for goods and services have been frozen for the past two years, and again will not be increased for 2026. We see this as a positive way to support our clubs.
Additionally, the OEFN Board have now formalised a standing commitment to clubs that any and all annual operational surpluses will be returned to clubs by way of discounts in the following year. Our aim is to achieve a break even result year on year.
To all our sponsors and commercial partners, we extend our gratitude for your generosity and unwavering support.
To the Outer East staff and management (Brett and the team) I also extend our thanks and appreciation. The efforts you go to, the time you spend and the compassion you portray ensure success.
To my fellow Board Members, Lauren (VP), Ryan, Josette, Holly, Mark and Steve I would like to thank you for your tireless efforts, leadership, vision and the support you have provided. We say goodbye and thankyou to Holly Simmons, OEFN Board Member who is standing down, and is not seeking reappointment.
To our clubs, Presidents, volunteers, office bearers, Players and supporters, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and thanks for the support, but moreso the trust you have shown me and the Board through this past year.
To our umpires and Umpiring Association, again thank you for your efforts and commitment.
Finally, to our stakeholders, partners, councils, AFL Victoria, Netball Victoria, competition neighbours, suppliers and providers thank you.
It is indeed comforting to know that we can work together, to bring about a greater result for all. I look forward to the next 12 months leading a new era for football and netball in the region.

In season 2025 we set ourselves the task of improving our engagement across the community, increasing our transparency and consultation and continuing to build stronger relationships.
By every measure we have been successful and the following reports from the respective department heads indicate this.
On the Media front Steph Barkas drove high levels of engagement across all aspects of media. From our weekly Football Netball Show, our social media, Media Day, weekly broadcasts and subsequent promotions we connected our broad community. I would like to thank Aidan Miller, Trent D’Alton, Adam Brogden and intern Stacey Sullivan, not forgetting our wonderful photographer Beth Hutchison. None of this would be possible without the amazing support of our players, coaches, umpires and associated volunteers.
Our core business of conducting football and netball competitions was once again excellently managed by Cam Hutchison, Matt Blanchard and Andy Gibbons. Regular club consultation through forums and meetings enabled all clubs to have input into the way our competitions were executed. From our home and away seasons, to celebrating our 20th year of netball to representative programs and culminating in brilliant finals series, we truly showcased what an amazing competition we have.
Mid-season we faced a major challenge when (7) our clubs made application to join other competitions. There were many meetings held with all stakeholders to understand the reasons behind this. It was pleasing that after much consultation that (3) of the clubs withdrew their applications (Wandin FNC, Wandin JFC and Emerald JFC,) and (2) were unsuccessful (Officer FC/ROC NC and Pakenham FC/NC) in joining their desired destination (WGFNL) due to a member club vote at local level. The remaining (2) (Upwey Tecoma FNC and Upwey Tecoma JFC) were accepted by a neighbouring competition (EFNL) and at appeal to AFL Victoria were unsuccessful. Stemming from the reasons put forward by all clubs we have begun work to remedy their concerns. We also remain steadfast in working with the EFNL, and other neighbouring competitions, on planning what the eastern region of metropolitan Melbourne can look like into the future for the greater good of football and netball.
We had significant changes in the umpiring structure in the 2024 off-season which provided us with a wonderful opportunity to rebuild and set a strong foundation for the future. Aaron Gillard drove much of this change and is to be applauded for his dedication and initiative. Aaron work diligently, hand in hand, with the AFL Victoria Umpire Department to bring programs and initiatives to the groups to improve retention and recruitment. The appointment of Peter James as Head of Umpiring and a fresh coaching structure saw significant improvement at the Senior level. The appointment of Georgia and Taylah Priestley as out Junior Umpire Coaches lead to an increase and high-level engagement of younger umpires in the YRUA. Peter Dixon’s support as President of the YRUA is also acknowledged.
Brendan Ellwood joined us as Club Development Lead and hit the ground running. Working closely with AFL Victoria we were able to support our clubs through club development programs, funding opportunities and specific club development assistance. Every aspect of club development is aimed at supporting all of our clubs to become strong, sustainable entities.
Our events took on a new look with a revamped Season Launch, the highly successful Women of the Outer East Networking Lunch, our inaugural Community Awards Night and culminating in our Gala Awards Night celebrating our whole competition post season. Sheryn Harbert led all of these functions with a clear focus around community engagement and they all hit the mark with great success.
There were significant changes at Board level with long term Chair Tony Mitchell stepping down. Tony’s legacy will belong lasting and his passion and determination for Outer East Football Netball to be the very best is unquestioned. Mark Sargent took over the role of Chair and Lauren Bourke stepping up into the role of Vice Chair. Both Mark and Lauren continue to drive a high-level focus on support, consultation and engagement.
Two new Board members joined us in Steve White and Mark Gladman, we look forward to their experience and acumen to support and assist our clubs strategically. Josette O’Donnell’s input once again was highly valuable. Holly Simmons will resign after two years on the Board and we thank Holly for her valued input.

Financially we will report a deficit in 2025 on the back of increased investment in capital works at Kilsyth Recreation Reserve, affiliation fees being kept at 2024 levels, as well as apparel and associated football costs. In 2025 we also invested further in the Junior Football Interleague program on the back of club feedback, further refined our finals revenue modelling and introduced a finals rebate to clubs.
We continue to plan to keep costs to clubs at a manageable level and invest in our clubs and the competition more broadly. I would like to thank Mark Sargent, Ryan Ford and Sheryn Harbert for their support and guidance as members of the Finance and Risk Committee.
We cannot achieve the aforementioned outcomes without the terrific support of our Commercial Partners whose investment, support and genuine interest in our competition and the community at large we are dependent upon. I would particularly like to mention the Bendigo Bank Community Branches of Dandenong Ranges (Upwey and Emerald),Upper Yarra Community Enterprise (Warburton and Yarra Junction), Monbulk & District and Mt Evelyn and District, your ongoing support is highly valued. Yarra Valley Water also increased their investment into our competition as Naming Rights partner of our Juniors, we also are extremely grateful. To all of our other valuable partners once again sincere thanks are extended to you all.
To our Mental Health and Wellbeing partners, namely Outside the Locker Room, Mental Health and Wellbeing Local, Round Table Connections, Smacktalk and SALT we applaud your support as vital partners in such an important healthspace
Our relationships with AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria continue to flourish, prosper and provide wonderful connection and program support to our football and netball communities. We would also like to acknowledge the ongoing Community Partnerships we have with North East Blaze and Hawthorn Football Club. Our association with both organisations provides mutual benefit which extends throughout our football and netball clubs and everyone associated.
Our office partner Eastern Ranges are thanked for their ongoing relationship and support. We continue to work closely with Danny Ryan and the team to collaborate on key initiatives both on and off the field.
Our relationships with the Yarra Ranges, Cardinia and Murrindini Shires continue to thrive as we look to work together for mutual benefit for each organisations and the clubs domiciled within each.
To the Board and Management, thank you one and all for your drive, dedication and willingness to go the extra mile, you are truly an incredible team to work with.
Finally, to our clubs, volunteers, players, coaches, umpires and supporters, the biggest thank you goes to you all. For without your unwavering commitment to your clubs and in turn Outer East Football Netball we would not be able to achieve anywhere near what we have.
Wishing you all a wonderful break and we look forward to again coming together in 2026 to celebrate football and netball in the Outer East region.

The 2025 season was highlighted by the celebrations of the 20th season of Netball’s inclusion to our competitions. The value that Netball has provided our clubs, competitions and communities since its introduction is immeasurable. It’s often been said to have been a savior for some clubs over the years, when their football sides had fallen on harder times, further highlighting some of this value. Whilst the quality of competition in our top grades of Netball is comparable to the best at community level, it’s also great to see that there is still a place for all players of any ability. Fittingly some of the best Grand Finals we witnessed this season were the Netball ones, including a couple which went into extra time.
Premier Division consisted of 10 clubs following the departure of Narre Warren and Berwick Springs to the SFNL at the end of the 2024 season. Healesville joined Premier Division for season 2025 following their premiership in 2024 with Pakenham relegated to Division One for season 2025 joining the remaining eight clubs in Division One.
The Under 18 teams competing in 2025 increased from twelve in 2024 to fifteen in 2025, which allowed for two separate divisions and teams to be aligned with their Senior Men’s teams each week. This was a great result for the competitions, with credit to be given to the Division One clubs especially, who worked together as a collective to achieve this result. It’s the first time since the 2019 season where we have had the U18’s competitions able to be structured in this fashion.
Pleasingly, for the more experienced age group, the Men’s Veteran’s competition was back up and running in 2025, with five clubs entering a team and early indications is that 2026 will be even bigger. The 2025 Veterans Grand Final Night at Gembrook was another great celebration of community, with a packed-out venue for the match between Gembrook Cockatoo and Belgrave, with the home side bringing home the Premiership. These two clubs also entered a Women’s Veterans team in 2025 for the first time, which brought some new and returning players to the game.
The Women’s football competitions continue to evolve. We welcomed back Mt Evelyn to the OEFN women’s and a new team entered from Yea. These two additional teams were off-set by Berwick Springs leaving and unfortunately Monbulk had to withdraw their team entry just prior to the season kicking off. Powelltown hosted a great Grand Final day which was well attended and created a magnificent atmosphere for all involved. Congratulations to Mt Evelyn and Warburton-Wesburn on winning the Premierships, a first for both of these teams.
Healesville was available again for Senior Football & Netball Finals hosting with the Netball courts being relayed in August, which saw them hosting the Premier Division Grand Final Day. A highlight of that day was the great atmospheres around the Netball matches. Unfortunately, Woori Yallock wasn’t available in September, and the Division One Grand Finals were awarded to Yarra Glen, where a record crowd number attended throughout the day. Thank you to all the 2025 host clubs, volunteers and committees in: Healesville, Yarra Glen, Gembrook Cockatoo, Woori Yallock, Olinda Ferny Creek and a special mention to Yarra Junction who hosted five separate days (some of which were back-to-back).
Congratulations to Wandin FNC who won their second flag in three seasons in the Senior Football and also took out the A Grade Netball flag in Premier Division. Upwey Tecoma finally broke the shackles and won the Reserves Premiership, after losing the previous three and Officer upset a previously undefeated Mt Evelyn to win the U18’s premiership in a thriller by 1point.
In Division One, Warburton Millgrove faced Seville in a Senior Football grand final for the first time in history and broke through for their first Premiership since 2006. Warburton Millgrove and Seville also played off in the Division One A Grade grand final, with Seville overturning 2024’s result, taking out the Premiership. Pakenham held of a fast-finishing Seville side in the U18’s to complete an undefeated season and my personal highlight was the Alexandra Reserves team which played the most complete finals series I witnessed, on their way to becoming a Premiership side.
The OEFN representative programs remain as a key item for our competition sustainability and growth. Special mentions to both Matt Blanchard (Netball) and Andy Gibbons (Junior Footy) and their respective team of coaches and assistants for getting these programs going and providing our Junior players with exposure to the talent pathways for each sport. These programs continue to grow in their offering to the participants which is a magnificent result.

The general behaviour of players in a tribunal disciplinary sense, markedly improved in 2025. 2025 was the second season we had been complying with the policy aspects of the AFL’s National Community Football Policy Handbook. Additional work in educating the broader football & netball communities, highlighting the expectation of spectator behaviour and their role in creating a great environment for all participants, will be a focus for 2026. This follows several policy breaches from spectators this season. Overall, the introduction of this new system, which mostly mirrors the AFL’s system from the elite level, has been a success and seen a reduction in the number of tribunal hearings required each year.
I’m proud to have led the creation and implementation of the inaugural OEFN Community Awards event, which highlights and celebrates the enormous efforts our club volunteers put into their clubs and communities. I believe this is a first event of this type for a Victorian Metro competition and I’m looking forward to it becoming a staple in the OEFN events Calendar for years to come. Thank you to Brett and my fellow staff for supporting this vision and helping it come to life. Thank you also to AFL Victoria and MSGA for their essential backing which allowed to event to be free for the attendees this season.
The Social Media engagement continues to be one of the best in community footy/netball, led by Stephanie Barkas and her matchday media team of Aidan Miller, Adam Brogden, Trent D’Alton with Bethany Hutchison continuing to provide us with great action photos each week. Thank you to Kylie Rowe, for assisting us on the grand final days, and a special mention to Stacey Sullivan who completed a great internship with us in 2025. Thank you to Glenn & Josh at Gameface and Brett & Steve from Premier Data and their teams, for being such great partners in this space which allows us to highlight all our participants from Junior to Senior Football and Netball alike.
Thank you to Brett Connell for his support and guidance this year and all my fellow staff members and numerous clubs for their efforts and support throughout season 2025.
A special thankyou once again extends to Tegan, Marshall and Charlotte for the extraordinary support they provide Year on year.

Once again in season 2025 participation has increased.
There was so much to celebrate during the yearThis year we had more Junior participants than ever before and would like to thank each of the club’s committees for their effort in offering children the chance to enjoy the sport that we all love.
We had fantastic numbers in our non-competitive competitions (Under 9 Wayalaks & Under 10’s). Our Junior carnivals were a fantastic success with well over 500 up and coming players enjoying the carnival atmosphere. Thanks to both Yarra Glen JFC & Seville JFC for hosting.
Our junior competition does not only offer our participants an enjoyable place to play but also offers a chance for a lot of children to become umpires. Without umpires we would not be able to play, so I would like to congratulate all our junior umpires, who officiated throughout the season.
To our Junior umpire mentors/coaches Georgia & Taylah, thank you for your effort in leading such a fine group of young boys and girls. Each week during the season we need to fill at least 60 games of junior football. I would like to thank Avi and add a special thank you to Georgia & Taylah who performed this task magnificently.
We re-jigged the Interleague program this season and it produced an immediate improvement. Thank you to all our coaches, support staff and most of all, all our players for their commitment and effort.
A special Thank you must go to Brad Bates, who over the last 3 years has led & developed our coaches in the Interleague program. Aaron Gillard once again was a fantastic help with the Interleague program "Thanks Aaron."
To our numerous Interleague Coaches and support staff, thank you for your commitment to our program.
• Under 12 Boys Development – Tim Francis & Aaron Barber
• Under 12 Girls Development – Donna Nicol
• Under 13 Boys Interleague – Ben Broadway, Steve Martin, Barry McDonald & David Lever
• Under 14 Boys Interleague – Connor McGuire, Sam D'Argenio & Adam Johnson
• Under 15 Boys Interleague – Lachlan Taylor, Jesse Bates & Chris Cartwright
• Under 14 Girls Interleague – Adele Ormsby, Jaimee Denovan & Grant Newing
• Under 16 Girls Interleague – Greg Walker, Taylah Grace & Josh Plunkett
To all our OEFN staff, OEFN board members and Club Presidents, Thank you for your support during this season. Your tireless work does not go unnoticed, "Thanks".
Our final series was a great success, with crowd numbers exceeding expectations. Thank you to the following clubs that hosted finals, Emerald, Healesville, Mt Evelyn, Olinda Ferny Creek, Wandin & Yarra Junction.
To our Grand Final hosting clubs Mt Evelyn & Yarra Junction " Thank you" , you can be so proud of your effort.
With the weather once again fine and sunny our Grand Finals were a brilliant spectacle for all who attended or watched live via our livestream. To the OEFN staff and Board members who helped out over our final series "Thank you", working together produced a quality experience for all.
Lastly it has been a privilege watching our players enjoying their time playing with their mates and learning skills throughout the season and I look forward to 2026.

2025 saw 129 Registered Participants consisting of 819 Open Age players, 271 junior age players and 129 Coaches and support staff. We also had 52 Panel Umpires register to officiate A & B Grade matches.
94 Teams were fielded across 19 Clubs. This consisted of 19xA Grade, 19xB Grade, 18xC Grade, 18x D Grade, 13x17&U, 7x15&U
I would like to thank, in particular, Alexandra, Emerald, Monbulk, Mt Evelyn, Pakenham Lions, Powelltown, R.O.C, Seville, Warburton-Millgrove, Wandin and Woori Yallock for your commitment to Junior Netball in 2025.
We fielded two teams in the Netball Victoria Association Championships, 15&U and 17&U. With limited preparation the girls performed above expectations. 2026 will see an expanded Representative Program with trials held pre-Christmas. The most pleasing aspect of our two teams is that we had representation from nine Clubs.
The Finals Series was another show stopper with 14 of the 19 Clubs represented. With huge crowds and great netball on display, it was a reminder as to how blessed we are to have a true football netball competition, all played on the same day, at the same venue.
Congratulations to Alexandra, Belgrave, Gembook-Cockatoo, Monbulk, Mt Evelyn, Powelltown, Pakenham Lions, ROC, Seville, Wandin, Warburton-Millgrove, Woori Yallock, Yarra Glen & Yarra Junction who were all took part in the 2025 Finals Series.

2025 kicked off with significant change for me, joining the OEFN team in late January after several years away from the community sport scene. I am grateful for all the learning opportunities throughout the year as I was introduced to the many facets of this position, and despite the steep learning curve, I’ve found my first season to be a rewarding journey.
OEFN clubs continue to answer the call participating in programs and initiatives to support their cultural and financial endeavours. Over $83,000 was received across the region thanks to the efforts of club volunteers via the Toyota Good For Footy Raffle and the Telstra Footy Country Grants programs combined, with two clubs (Olinda Ferny Creek FNC and Woori Yallock FNC) ranking within the top 10 clubs nationally for funds raised through the Raffle. The Victorian Container Deposit Scheme continues to provide a funding stream to motivated clubs, with particular recognition to Alexandra FNC who once again lead the state in funds raised by a considerable margin. An additional acknowledgement is warranted to Monbulk FNC for the incredible event and video they put together for TAC Road Safety Round, which won them the inaugural “Mental Health or Social Initiative of the Year” award.
The commitment within the OEFN community to providing quality environments and experiences for women and girls continues to grow as a vital part of our identity. Over half of our competition are current signatories to the AFL Women & Girls Community Football Charter, completing a public statement of commitment and an action plan focussing on continued improvement, and having successfully completed our own inaugural Charter, OEFN is proud to be the first metro competition to renew for an additional 12 months with new focus areas. Our Women of the Outer East advisory group program culminated in the annual Leadership and Networking Lunch event, a wonderful celebration of the many strong female leaders in our community. We also congratulate our three participants in AFL Victoria’s Lead Your Way program –Donna McLennan (Woori Yallock FNC), Donna Nicol (Upwey Tecoma JFC) and Melania Serwylo (Belgrave JFC).
I thank the support of our Wellbeing Partners for their assistance to clubs throughout the year – Outside the Locker Room, Sport and Life Training, SmackTalk, Round Table Connections and the Yarra Ranges’ Mental Health and Wellbeing Local team – alongside Eastern Health, Monash Health and GoodSports, who lead the way in the support of alcohol and smoking management in community sport. Our clubs play a vital role in the wellbeing and social fulfilment of their members, and it encouraging to not only see clubs beginning to enhance their understanding of this space, but to also have motivated organisations dedicated to helping them do so.

The Club Development Forum held in February provided a great opportunity for club leaders to refresh their knowledge in some key areas, along with the chance to upskill in a range of governance topics. The day was well attended, kicking off with a market style sponsor tradeshow that allowed club personnel to interact directly with sponsors, suppliers and wellbeing partners.
Following a short central address and prize draw, we split into four breakout rooms with content in different focuses. Available content included sessions on club development resources from AFL Victoria, introductions to our wellbeing partners, information for new executives, social media, coaching, and culture building. With positive feedback received on the adjusted format, we look forward to building on this year’s event in 2026.
One highlight of my year was match managing throughout the finals series. Early morning drives to Powelltown, Yarra Glen and Healesville were a spectacular showcase of the region, and being able to recognise so many faces around the grounds was a great reminder of the connections I’ve been fortunate enough to make across the season. Congratulations to all the premiers, and an extra thank you to the often unsung heroes who keep the teams on track – the team managers!
I would like to take this chance to thank the entire OEFN staff group for welcoming me and making it so easy to fit into this team, and further thank Brett and Cameron for their guidance and faith in me throughout the year. Thanks also to Maddy Gough and Paul Milo from AFL Victoria for their support, and to Travis Switzer for his projects with Powelltown, Yarra Junction and Pakenham. And finally, thanks to the array of cafes that kept me functioning after sleepless nights with a 1 year old!

2025 was the second season where the Outer East Football Netball fully operated disciplinary matters through the AFL’s National Community Football Policy Handbook. The disciplinary policies adhered to essentially mirror those used by the AFL at the elite level. The number of Tribunal hearings required/requested, remained below 10% of the total number of notices of charges for season 2025
Contact to the head of an opponent continues to be as a focus area for officials, which does relate to the majority of the rough conduct charges from season 2025. In season 2025 the AFL merged the Melee and Wrestling charges into one charge and it was pleasing to see the players and club had a marked improvement in this area this season. The total melee and wrestling charges dropped from 176 in 2024 to 81 in 2025, which the clubs and players should be commended for, with some room for improvement still.
An area that still requires some improvement from clubs is the players’ and club official’s interactions with umpires, where we saw an increase in reports relating to this area. The umpires have also been instructed to not stand for behavior of this type and will continue to do so into the coming seasons. With the average age of umpires in Victoria now at 16 and retention rates not being high, the respect shown toward umpires is a key focus for all competitions.
Other focuses for OEFN and clubs alike will be on communicating the expectations of spectator behaviour moving forward, of the back of a number of Policy breach notices being issued in season 2025 from this area. Additionally, the reprimand system is being reviewed, with a possible change in the grading being explored, mainly for striking offences.
A summary of reports/notices of charge in 2025 include:
81 for “Engaging in a Melee or wrestling another person”
43 for “Intentionally or carelessly engaging in rough conduct against an opponent”
35 for “Intentionally or carelessly striking another person”
22 for “Using abusive, insulting or obscene language towards or in relation to an umpire”
13 for “Using abusive, insulting, threatening or obscene language”
10 for “Instigating a melee”
7 for “Intentionally or carelessly bumping or making forceful contact to an opponent from front-on when that Player has their head down over the football”
4 for " failing to leave the playing surface when directed to do so by an Umpire”
3 for “Intentionally or carelessly kicking another person”
2 for “Disputing a decision of an umpire”
2 for “Attempting to strike another person”
2 for “Intentionally or carelessly tripping another person”
2 for “Intentionally or carelessly head-butting or making contact to another person using the head”
2 for “Behaving in an abusive, insulting, threatening or obscene manner towards or in relation to an umpire”
2 for “Intentionally or carelessly charging an opponent”
2 for “Spitting at or on another person”
1 for “Intentionally or carelessly making unreasonable or unnecessary contact with the eye region of another person”
1 for “Carelessly making contact with an Umpire”
1 for ”Intentionally shaking, climbing or otherwise interfering with a goal or behind post”

Another year of Football and Netball has come to an end! A fantastic year of events, milestones, functions, stories, moments, memories and highlights throughout Outer East Football Netball in 2025.
It was great to see the amazing display of talent across our Junior Netball and Football, Open Netball, Veterans, Women's and Senior Football throughout the year and the success of these competitions is something we should be proud of.
Thank you to my work colleagues and the most amazing admin team, led strongly by Brett. To Andy, Brendan, Brett, Cam, Matt, Sheryn, Stacey and Steph. Your work in each department is first class and is the reason why we have such a great and well-run competition. You are also great friends, and I have so much fun working with you all.
This year has been a year of change for the umpiring department, with a new structure and reshuffle of the umpiring department being implemented for the season. Feedback taken from the umpire group in 2024 was actioned on, and 2025 was seen as a year of getting stability back within the umpire group.
On the back of that, we were delighted to welcome new Head of Umpiring Peter James to the Outer East Football Netball, who arrived as someone fresh to the umpire group with a wealth of umpire knowledge across his decades of umpire involvement with multiple leagues.
Peter bought with him a level of enjoyment that was well-received by the group, and his leadership, support, commitment and dedication to the umpires and the role in the group was fantastic. I thank Peter for his efforts this year and am looking forward to working together next year and beyond.
To Field Umpire coaches Pat Van Dyk and Jason Newman, to Boundary Umpire coaches Daniel Molino and Graham Bergroth, and Goal Umpire coach Bob Allen, thank you all for your efforts with the coaching, guidance, education and support for our umpires.
Our Junior umpires also had a very positive year. We have such a young group, but all are willing to listen, learn and develop their skills and did a great job throughout the year. A massive thank you and congratulations to our Junior Coaches Georgia & Taylah Priestley. Your care, guidance, support, communication, commitment and effort with the Junior umpire group was first class, and you were both amazing role models for our young and upcoming umpires during the year. Our two Female Liaison Officers, also Georgia & Taylah Priestley, thank you for your work with the great mix of Women & Girls (W&G's) umpires within our group. The movie nights, activities and support you provided was awesome, and the OEFN are lucky to have you two and all you commit to ensure we have the best possible inclusive environment, and numbers of W&G's possible.
Thank you also for taking on the Junior appointments role for the rest of the year, the thankless task that is so important to ensure all Junior games are filled each week, and to Avi Kulatunge who took on the role for the first half of the year. Thank you to the Yarra Ranges Umpires Association and President Peter Dixon for your support. We have a strong working relationship together and are always working side-by-side to ensure the best outcomes and environment for all our umpires. We cherish this partnership and look forward to this continuing for the benefit of umpires in the OEFN. Thank you also to Mark Sargent and the whole Board for your support of our umpires. This is much appreciated.
Our relationship with the AFL Victoria Umpire Department, led by Leigh Buwalda & Ash Brennan (W&G team), is very strong and something we don't take for granted. We appreciate your collaboration and thank you for assisting us with funding and resources for the multiple programs we delivered in 2025.
We had successful AFL Vic umpire recruitment programs, guest AFL/W, VFL/W and state league Umpire appearances at training, and access to AFL/W Grid games for our umpires during the year, giving our umpires the best possible experience in 2025.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to working together for 2026 in recruitment and other important areas to always improve umpiring in the OEFN the best way possible.
It was a great year from an umpire perspective, with many milestones and achievements worth celebrating in 2025!
A huge milestone and highlight during the year was the all-Female Umpire Panel for the Round 15 Division One Olinda Ferny Creek vs Belgrave Women's game. This was a special occasion, as the game was livestreamed with plenty of media coverage deserving of the day.
Congratulations and well done to Ella Priestley, Olive Kelly, Lili Denovan, Taylah Priestley, Sarah Fishley & Veronica Brown – you did yourselves, the OEFN/YRUA and our Women &Girl's umpires proud. We are excited for these games to become more frequent with the rising number of Women & Girls umpires and opportunities in our group.

With a second season under my belt, I'm immensely proud of the work that the media team have done and what we have achieved this year.
This season has seen an increase in media team members, with Adam Brodgen (commentary), Stacey Sullivan (media & comms intern / photography) and Sahil Abbasi (writer) joining the team alongside Aidan Miller, Trent D'Alton (commentators) & Beth Hutchison (photography). We've had a key focus on continuing to build strong relationships and rapport with players, officials and spectators at our clubs, and pushing the boundaries creatively in Season 2025.
There was a lot of change in our media landscape in 2024, where we worked on finding our identity and re-building the OEFN brand. This year, I feel the team have done well in continuing to build our brand and solidifying who we are, and most importantly showcasing who we are across all facets of our media – be it player interviews, articles, photos, social media, events or otherwise. We have had plenty of earned media this year, with moments from across our competition going viral and resulting in appearances on The Front Bar, Sunrise, Dan Does Footy, Sunday Footy Show & more. We have also maintained strong relationships with former OEFN players who have moved on in their sporting journeys – whether this be VNL players, SSN players, AFL or AFLW players.
All of this connects into our overall engagement strategy which is to tell our story, and to celebrate our people. I think it goes without saying that the best part our competition is the strength of our community and the great people that are part of it - that is to say, our community sits at the heart of what we do, and, while it always has, I feel like we are telling the story of our people in a better way, and that our community is more connected than ever. This has been evidenced by the increase in engagement on our social media channels, as well as our clubs' willingness to participate and interact with our media team members on game day, media day and at our events.
We as a media team are very appreciative of our players, officials and club people understanding our role and being willing to be part of the story. Without the buy-in from our community, we wouldn't have been able to achieve what we have - we are only getting stronger by working together to build our brand and tell our story, and because everyone is so welcoming, we as the media team get to enjoy being part of the community too. So, I'd like to thank all of you for your contribution – whether you've given us a post-match interview, been on the show, run your club social media, come to media day, have a friendly chat with us on game day, or otherwise – know that we sincerely appreciate it!
I'd like to thank Aidan, Trent, Beth, Stacey, Adam & Sahil for their incredible effort to our overall media output this season. I've been lucky to lead a team of very passionate people who have risen to every challenge, support each other, and understand our purpose and place as part of this competition.
I'd like to thank our game day vision and content partner GameFace, who I have once again challenged this season in asking for additions to our match day broadcasts/livestreams to further elevate these from 2024, as well as supported us with executing new content ideas. To Glenn, Josh, Al, Lenzy and Luke – your support continues to be incredible and I'm very appreciative of your help in bringing of all my ideas to life.
To the OEFN team - Brett, Cam, Sheryn, Matt, Andy, Aaron & Brendan – I am thankful for your support and thank you for keeping me updated on the facets of each of your areas so we can promote all the great things happening in our competition. I am appreciative of your belief in me in trying new ideas and allowing the team to "spread their wings" creatively, and I am lucky to work with a team that continually strives to be better, and do better.
Lastly, to our partners and sponsors, thank you for your continued support of our competition and I look forward to working together again next season.
In working with the media team and partners & sponsors throughout the off season, we have big plans for Season 2026 for all things content, media and engagement with planning well underway!

Looking forward to it. See you then!
