Welcome I t’s all about food in the September issue of out&about.

We chat to Marlon Renton of Wild Food UK about the joys of foraging and what you can discover on a walk in Banstead’s woodland this autumn.

As the last hints of summer ebb away we can look forward to a season of colour and reaping the rewards of nature.

Staying on the food theme, we look ahead to the first Cheam Celebration of Food & Drink – a one-day festival showcasing artisan produce from independent food and drink producers across Surrey and the neighbouring counties.

For if you know where to look,

fields, hedgerows and woods have plenty of seasonal delights to offer, from blackberries to seeds, to nuts and mushrooms.

September is also a month to get out and explore some of Surrey’s hidden treasures as venues not always open to the public reveal all for the Heritage Open Days festival.

Wild food foraging is becoming a popular pastime, fuelled partly by a desire to know the provenance of the produce and ingredients that we use in our meals and also to spend time outdoors enjoying nature.

What do Epsom and Cannes have in common?

The answer, an international film festival!

Epsom will be rolling out the red carpet for the inaugural Satisfied Eye International Film Festival this October and we get the lowdown on what is coming up from artistic director Chris Hastings.

EDITOR’S TIPS The Masters All eyes will be on Walton Heath this October when the 2018 British Masters is played out on the historic golf course. Founded in 1903, Walton Heath Golf Club is no stranger to being on the big stage having hosted the European Open in the 70s and 80s and the Ryder Cup in 1981.

Olympic champion Justin Rose, who is the tournament host, chose Walton Heath as the venue saying: “Walton Heath is a golf course I really, really enjoy playing, in fact I love it.”

The 2018 British Masters will run from October 11-14.

Artisan producers to showcase food and drink at first Cheam festival Take a culinary journey this September at the first Cheam Celebration of Food and Drink, a free one-day festival featuring 100 independent food and drink producers from around Surrey and the neighbouring counties.

“It is all about education,” he says. “I love my food and I like going out and trying different things.

The festival is the vision of Michael Quinton who has organised the culinary event at Cheam Park around his day-to-day job as a health and safety officer.

Tantalise your tastebuds at the Food Court, where you can sample an eclectic range of dishes from around the globe, while the Food Hall will showcase artisan producers selling everything from speciality breads to cheeses, pickles, chutneys and homemade sauces, craft beers and ciders.

His objective is twofold: to showcase the quality and diversity of independent food and drink producers in Surrey and the surrounding counties, and to encourage people to find out about the provenance of their food, how it is made and the ingredients used.

Not everyone can do that so this will be a chance to meet and talk to the producers about their products.

During the day there will also be an appearance by the Lizard Lady with a chance for children to get up close and meet her collection of reptiles.

Celebration of Surrey Hills landscape through song and art

RITUALS

Harvest is the busiest time of the year for arable farmers. The work that takes place, the processes involved, and the way farming helps to shape the landscape is one that is largely unseen – until now.

Over the summer, artist Mary Branson has been working with Lower Box Hill Farm to explore the farmers’ relationship to the land as part of Surrey Unearthed, a programme of 10 innovative art projects focusing on the natural materials of the Surrey Hills landscape, their history and uses over time.

Funded by the Arts Council, Surrey County Council, The Surrey Hills Society and Arts Partner-ship Surrey, the Surrey Unearthed project coincides with the Surrey Hills 60-year Area of Natural Beauty designation.

These will be illuminated from September 15 to 29 from dusk till 11pm each evening. The light installation will be visible from Salomon’s Memorial, enabling people to see the work from a distance.

Guided night walks will also allow viewers to see the large scale light installation up close.

Our changing climate has had a damaging result on farming this year with the drought causing a much reduced crop of hay at Box Hill Farm.

The project will culminate in a celebration at the Box Hill viewpoint which will bring the arts and landscape together. Community choirs and poetry groups will perform work created and inspired by the Surrey landscape. The event will also incorporate a ‘calling’ from viewpoint to artwork and back led by artist Alison Carlier.

Mary’s art installation will feature 66 ‘invisible’ bales - illuminated outlines of the dimensions of hay bales, arranged in the same formation used in farming across the lower field at Box Hill.

ENTERTAINMENT Jam-packed programme at Epsom Playhouse this autumn.

Music, drama, top comedy and a giant of a panto are among the line-up coming to Epsom Playhouse this autumn.

Kicking off the season on September 6 is Bye Bye Baby – A Celebration of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons.

Comedian Joe Pasquale is the first of a slew of top acts bringing the laughs to the Playhouse.

After a sell-out performance in 2017, the show returns with a nostalgic journey through the musical career of the band celebrating the hits from its early days in the 1950s, through to its 1960s heyday and later success in the 70s.

He will be stopping off in Epsom on September 19 with his stand up tour, Joe Pasquale – A Few of my Favourite Things. It comes 30 years after his appearance on the ITV talent show, New Faces, which catapulted him on to the comedy scene. Often described as a ‘comedy genius’, Pasquale will treat audiences to a mix of some of his best ‘cack’ with some new surprises along the way.

DISCOVER AUTUMN’S SEASONAL DELIGHTS ON A FORAGING WALK The days may be getting shorter, but the arrival of autumn brings its own fruits – a bountiful crop of berries, nuts, seeds and edible mushrooms.

Foraging for wild food is becoming more popular, but for the uninitiated it can be a minefield.

Marlow Renton and Eric Biggane of Wild Food UK run seasonal foraging courses in Banstead where they explore the woodland for autumnal produce.

We caught up with Marlow to find out more.

How did you first get involved in foraging?

Foraging was always a hobby for both Eric and I since we were young. We both foraged with our grandparents as children. Being people who love nature, the outdoors and good food foraging came naturally. We’ve always loved walking around beautiful green places, of which Britain has many. By foraging along the way you turn those lovely walks into treasure hunts where the joy of finding a new chanterelle patch is very much like finding a pot of gold.

Did that spark your passion for finding and cooking food that you had foraged?

The cooking side is something that has developed as neither of us are trained chefs, we used to get more enjoyment out of simply finding and identifying things, but now we do spend a reasonable amount of time in the kitchen, too.

How did the foraging courses come about?

The courses started in 2012 after a friend from Cardiff asked us to come and take them and a group around Bute Park, where we still run courses to this day. They paid for our travel and a place to stay so that we could take them around the park to help them identify the numerous mushrooms they had found there. This gave us the idea that we could actually make money out of it and Wild Food UK was born.

Over that time have you seen a growth in the number of people taking the courses who are keen to learn about wild food?

As a company we have grown over the last six years with our profile being enhanced by the occasional TV and radio appearances, but alongside that there has been a general groundswell of popularity in foraging as people seem to be looking more for a greener and healthier lifestyle, more people are turning to a vegetarian or vegan diet and nowadays people are much more interested in where their food has come from and how it is produced and packaged.

WILD FOOD UK Obviously picking your food for yourself means that you know much more about it, plus it’s naturally fresher and healthier.

What would you put the interest in foraging down to?

I think foraging became a little bit trendy in the naughties when a restaurant in Denmark called Noma started winning world restaurant of the year and other awards through serving foraged food. This meant that tasty foraged food grew in popularity in restaurants around the UK, then people started to realise that they could find these wonderful ingredients for themselves.

Which is your favourite season for foraging and why?

All of them, apart from winter! They all have their own special treats, winter too has some very tasty mushrooms and plants, it’s just not so nice foraging in the cold, and you can’t go out for too long as the days are shorter and foraging in the dark is quite a tricky business!

You run regular foraging courses in Banstead.

What makes this area special?

The outskirts of London are great for foraging with numerous different environments, trees, plants and mushrooms to find. Banstead is one of those places, where not far from the concrete of London you really feel like you have come to the countryside. Plus, having lived near to Banstead for a number of years, we know the area well and where all the plants and mushrooms grow.

What can people expect to discover on the Banstead course this autumn? What does the course entail?

We always expect to find a number of both edible and poisonous mushrooms and plants there, meaning this is a great place to teach people about the diverse things you can find. Even though the walk is reasonably suburban the variation is incredible, which always surprises people, and that’s something we love to do. At the end of each course we have a surprisingly tasty meal based on what we have found.

How does this differ according to the seasons?

There isn’t really anything more seasonal than foraging.

Each season has its own delights, such as wild garlic and other lovely shoots in early spring, followed by St George’s mushrooms and elderflowers for your elderflower champagne in April and May, then certain early fruits will start to appear alongside the summer mushrooms, such as chicken of the woods, Giant puffballs and horse mushrooms. Then at the end of August through to the end of autumn different mushrooms, fruits and nuts appear each week. As a forager you don’t just have four seasons you have about 12 of them!

Is foraging more restrictive in more urban, built-up areas, or would people be surprised at just how many wild plants they could find that are edible?

Suburban parks and woodlands are great for foraging, but you would also be amazed at what you can find on verges and around housing estates. Around Banstead there are numerous cherry and plum trees of different varieties. And even the playing fields with football and rugby pitches produce gourmet mushrooms fit for fine dining!

How important is it to have an understanding of the plants and fungi you can and cannot forage – and eat – before setting out on your own?

There are numerous rules to foraging safely and sustainably, but the number 1 rule is to never eat anything unless you are 100% sure of what it is and that it is edible. This applies to plants and fruits as well as mushrooms as we have many deadly poisonous species in the UK; so knowledge is important. Stick to what you know, and if you find something that you can’t identify, get the books out or go online to one of the numerous plant and mushroom identification groups on social media such as our own.

The good thing is that many of the edible species are very distinctive and therefore very easy to identify. Once you have found and smelled wild garlic, for example, you simply couldn’t mistake it for anything else.

WW1 FEATURE CENTENARY

Remembering THE FALLEN

Commemorative event will pay thanks to those who served in WW1.

It has been 100 years since the guns fell silent on the World War one battlefields.

To mark the centenary of the end of the conflict, which claimed the lives of 700,000 UK troops, a commemorative event is to be staged at Bourne Hall, Ewell, on September 23.

Historical reenactors will reveal what life was like for the men serving on the front before an anniversary concert organised by the Royal British Legion.

Uniformed troops and officers will explain conditions in the trenches – waterlogged, muddy and overrun by rats – to the day-to-day duties of soldiers and the weapons they fought with, including a Vickers machine gun, which will be on display.

An army marches on its stomach, see what the Tommies had to eat and how it was cooked on the front. Meet a padre and take a tour of a field hospital where injured troops were treated in makeshift medical facilities.

Displays and talks on feeding the troops, infantry weapons and machine-gunning as well as the use of poison gas, a new weapon in trench warfare, will be held throughout the morning.

David Brooks, of Bourne Hall Museum, said: “It is very important to remember the men and women that served in the Great War. Just over 4,000 men left Epsom and Ewell and just over 400 did not come back. They are remembered on the war memorials. Many men served, but died after the memorials were erected, of wounds, from gas that weakened lungs or suffered from mental illness for the rest of their lives.

WHAT ELSE IS ON Ashtead Rye Meadow Wetlands Visit the Centenary Field commemorating the Ashtead residents who fell in the Great War and afterwards continue through the fields alongside the Rye Brook to Ashtead Woods Road. Volunteers will be on hand to escort groups.

Over the past six years volunteers have been working to create a wetland area alongside the Rye Brook. They have planted a Jubilee Wood, reshaped river banks and created ponds to encourage the biodiversity of the area. Footpaths have been resurfaced to enable circular walks to take place and to make the site more accessible.

Church of the Wisdom of God

All Saints Church, Banstead A Grade II* medieval church, restored in 1861 by G E Street.

Displays and an illustrated talk on the church’s history, stained-glass windows, monuments and historic books will be held and there will also be a bell ringing demonstration.

The church of the Wisdom of God is unique in England: it is built like a Roman basilica and is filled with treasures from ancient Rome and Byzantium.

Two guided tours of the ancient churchyard, which includes listed chest tombs, will take place in the afternoon.

Founded by two Victorian philanthropists, Dr Edwin Freshfield and Sir Henry Cosmo Orme Bonsor, Bart., both residents of Kingswood, the church was designed by architect Sidney Barnsley. Working closely with craftsmen, the interior of the Grade I listed church is decorated in fine marbles and mosaics to recreate the Byzantine style.

Four green spaces in Epsom rated among the best in the country We always knew that Epsom was a fantastic place to live and explore with abundant parkland and green spaces.

Now here is the proof, with four green spaces in the borough recognised as among the best in the UK. Epsom Common Local Nature Reserve, Ewell Court Park, Alexandra Recreation Ground and Rosebery Park have all received Green Flag awards – the mark of a quality park or green space.

They were among a record-breaking 1,883 public parks and green spaces to receive the prestigious awards, run by Keep Britain Tidy, which are judged on eight criteria ranging from visitor facilities, cleanliness and maintenance of the grounds to biodiversity and community involvement.

Councillor Barry Nash, chairman of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council’s

community and wellbeing committee, said: “We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining our green spaces to such a high standard.

“We are absolutely delighted to receive these Green Flag Awards which are a testimony to the hard work of our staff and also the input from community groups and volunteers.”

Strap on your walking boots or trainers and take part in the annual Round the Borough Hike on Saturday, September 8. The hike starts and finishes at Horton Country Park and follows a 20-mile route across some of the borough’s beautiful open spaces including Epsom Downs, Epsom Common Local Nature Reserve, Nonsuch Park and the Hogsmill.

award for the 12th consecutive year. It is the largest local nature reserve in Surrey and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

the award for the seventh year in a row. The park is the former gardens of the historical Ewell Court House.

Alexandra Recreation Ground is a sports ground with

facilities for cricket, football, bowls, tennis and basketball situated in Alexandra Road. It is the seventh year in a row that it has won a Green Flag Award.

Rosebery Park won a Green Flag award for the sixth time this year. It is a formal town centre park.

FILM FESTIVAL TO PREMIERE IN EPSOM Like Cannes, only cooler. And with fewer yachts – is the strapline for the inaugural Satisfied Eye International Film Festival.

Epsom will be rolling out the red carpet this October when it premieres some unmissable independent films and documentaries from around the world. We chat to artistic director Chris Hastings ahead of the festival.

How did the idea for the film festival come about?

Why Epsom?

The festival’s mission statement revolves around discovery – whether giving a launch pad to the next Chris Nolan or Jane Campion, introducing audiences to some undiscovered gems and proving that a movie doesn't need to have Brad Pitt in it to deserve viewing (sorry Brad), or showing people that Epsom has more to offer than just an annual horse race. It’s quite the juggling act, but we want to create an event that local people can enjoy and be proud of while also making sure any filmmakers go away desperate to return the following year.

I live and work in Epsom and as a writer and director I spend a lot of time at film festivals. For the career success of filmmakers they’re vital, but there’s a vast number and they’re not all created equal. At the same time, I know as a resident myself that there’s a desperate need and desire for more social, entertainment and family events and activities locally.

It was very much about bringing these two worlds together.

Tell us a little bit about the inaugural festival?

This year is very much about showing what we’re about.

Some festivals are focused on business, some are very local affairs, we’re looking to combine the two. It’s intended as a fun, sociable event which offers something for everyone and a chance to rub shoulders with the filmmakers. So aside from some of the best independent films, animation and documentaries from around the world (screened at Epsom Playhouse), there’ll be film related events and competitions for kids, Q&As and workshops, a rather extravagant opening

What are the festival’s aims?

How difficult is it for writers/film-makers to get their work seen by an audience in this way?

Like anything creative, it’s a saturated industry. Thanks to modern technology anyone can pick up a mobile phone and make a movie and then stick it online, which is great, but it also means that getting your work acknowledged is incredibly hard. If you want your film seen somewhere where it might actually have a benefit to your career, it’s a huge challenge.

SATISFIED EYE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL What have the submissions been like so far? How far afield have the submissions come from?

There’s some amazing talent out there and we’ve had to change our programming schedule a number of times as a result just because some of them are too good to leave out. We’ve had submissions from some 35 countries from around the world and while the majority are from the US and UK, we’ve had films from Nepal, Korea, Iraq, Mexico, Zambia, Lebanon. Every now and again I’ll watch one of the submissions and say “that’s why this festival is so important”, because you have a filmmaker who has created something so brilliant, so perfect, you want to make sure it gets seen, you want to help their star ascend.

voluntary, our tiny team is doing it in their spare time (myself included) and we have absolutely no funding, so it’s all about bringing together people who want to create something special and help turn Epsom and the surrounding areas into a cultural hub. But we can only do that with local support.

You have got quite a list of experienced festival judges, why were they so keen to be involved?

I think the frustrating thing for a lot of filmmakers is that you submit your film to a festival and even if it is selected, that’s pretty much the sum of it. I wanted to make sure filmmakers were getting the most valuable thing – connections! So I brought on board a few colleagues as judges who will be providing feedback, but will also be there for a networking event where the filmmakers can make some invaluable contacts with people who’ve been there, done it and can become their contacts too and maybe even work with them in the future. At the same time, we have a judging panel of local people for the People’s Choice Award and this very much sums up our festival, bringing together the industry and the community.

Do you hope to make the festival an annual event?

Absolutely. We’ve done a huge amount of research and we’re working tirelessly to ensure it’s a success. The entire festival is

new school year with these tips

The new school term is just days away and already the summer holidays seem like a distant memory.

Being prepared to go back to school – or in some cases starting school – is the key to making the transition as smooth and as easy as possible.

Here are some tips to help beat the back-to-school rush.

The longer summer evenings, hot weather and holidays all play havoc with bedtime routines, with children tending to stay up later and sleep in longer. Getting set bedtimes in place before school starts can help everyone adjust ahead of the morning alarm call on the first day back, plus sleep is vital if children are to concentrate in class.

Eating a healthy breakfast before the start of the school day has been shown to increase energy, improve concentration and set children up for the day ahead. Leave enough time for your child to sit down and eat in the morning and think about packing healthy snacks like fruit, dried fruits and granola bars to boost energy levels during the day.

Get packing

Avoid last-minute panics on the morning school run by organising as much as possible the night before. Make lunches, lay out uniforms, check PE kits and have school bags packed so that you don’t have to run around trying to find books or trainers.

Lost uniform is a daily hazard. Before the start of the new term, check that any items of uniform that you already have still contain name labels.

Any new items should be labelled as well, including coats, bags, hats and shoes. Encourage your child to hang up their coats and jumpers and to take care of their belongings and talk to them about what to do if they lose something.

First day

If your child is starting reception or making the transition to a new school then it is good to do a practice run so you know your route in advance. If you’re using public transport, check timetables and leave plenty of time for your journey – better to arrive early and have time before the bell rings than arriving in a fluster.
