            Sutton Community Farm
Improving Wellbeing and Enhancing Community Through People-Powered Food Production that is Good for People and Planet
Hidden within the Little Woodcote Estate there is an impressive seven acre organic fruit and veg farm that is owned by, run by, and exists for the benefit of the community.
Surrounded by other land-based businesses, Sutton Community Farm grows and delivers delicious fresh food that is eaten by over 400 households a week.
The farm was first started in 2010. It was set-up to localise the food system, to reduce food miles and promote seasonal diets. Alongside environmental benefits, various social benefits
were embedded into the model, giving local people opportunities to make new friends, learn new skills, and experience improvements in mental and physical health.
14 years after its creation, Sutton Community Farm is an established community enterprise. The farm regularly welcomes over 60 volunteers every week, with volunteer sessions occurring Monday through Thursday and less often on Saturdays. Volunteers are the heart and soul of the farm, getting involved in all areas of
farm activities. The farm also provides opportunities for adults with learning disabilities.
Get ready for a festive season filled with joy and wonder in Surrey! Treat your little ones to a magical Christmas experience with a plethora of delightful activities. From enchanting light displays to Santa’s grottos, our guide will help you make this holiday season unforgettable for your children.
The farm makes most of its income through online farm shop sales and delivers throughout south London and parts of Surrey. Customers can order seasonal VegBoxes, as well as individual items including bread, eggs, honey, grains and pulses. The farm supports the livelihoods of other organic farmers by buying and selling food produced elsewhere.
This year Sutton Community Farm is set to harvest more than
          SUTTON COMMUNITY FARM 6 E @outandaboutmagazines Q @outaboutmag www.outaboutmagazine.co.uk
20 tonnes of fresh vegetables. Responsible land stewardship is core to how the farm is organised, with no chemicals used in production and a strong focus on boosting the health of the soil. Promoting biodiversity and wildlife through establishing ponds, wildflower strips and hedgerows, enables a more holistic ecosystem on the farm.
Sutton Community Farm is a wonderful example of the power of community in changing the food system, taking care of the land, and improving people’s lives in the process! They’re always looking for new volunteers and new customers, see their website for more info.

Bring your biggest ROOAR and your fastest feet as you take Ranger Danger’s masterclass to become an Official Dinosaur Ranger – gaining the skills you need to come face-to-face with the World’s largest walking T Rex, a big-hearted Brontosaurus, tricky Triceratops, uncontrollable Carnotaurus, vicious Velociraptors & sneaky Spinosaurus.
We spoke to Head Ranger, Dr Bones and asked a few questions:
How did Jurassic Earth come about?
“A young explorer was on an expedition in South America and discovered an unusual looking ROCK. She placed it in her backpack and was returning to camp with the hot sun beating on her back, when suddenly she heard a noise! TAP TAP TAP! She opened her backpack and realised the unusual rock was not a rock at all! In fact, it was an EGG that was hatching right before her very eyes! Before long, she was cradling a baby dinosaur, squawking loudly. This brave explorer learnt how to raise and train the new hatchling and went on to become a leading dinosaur expert - ahem - that’s me!”

    Is Jurassic Earth safe?
“If you follow Ranger Danger’s survival training, you should be almost, absolutely fine.
A few additional survival tips for visitors:
          • Don’t put your hand inside a dinosaur’s mouth.
          • Don’t pull a dinosaur’s tail.
          • Say hello, take a photo, then run for your lives.
          • Bring meat to distract the flesh-eating predators.”

Can Children help feed the Dinosaurs?
“No, please do not feed your children to our dinosaurs. This is not a service we provide. Although we have been inundated with enquiries.”

    Reigate Hill
          Reigate Hill

This stretch of the North Downs is good walking country with flower-sprinkled grasslands and quiet shady woods to enjoy. It is also a really lovely spot for family picnics or gatherings, and games in the spring or summer.
Sitting proud at the top of the Hill is the 19thcentury Reigate Fort. The fort commands a historic defensive position looking out over the weald towards the South Downs.
The chalk downland is home to many rare wild flowers and insects, and if you’re lucky you may see the vibrant Adonis Blue butterfly.
To the east, Gatton Park nestles beautifully into the North Downs. The rich pastures, mighty trees ,and sparkling lakes, designed by Lancelot Capability Brown, are simply stunning.
Reigate Hill and Gatton Park are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
REIGATE FORT AT REIGATE HILL AND GATTON PARK
The fort was built towards the end of Queen Victoria’s reign as part of a key defence plan to counter the threat of French invasion. Today, you can visit the outside of the fort to soak up the atmosphere and learn the details of its military history.
          Why was Reigate Fort built?
With Britain’s naval power waning and the threat of invasion from France hanging over the country, the 1890s was a worrying time. England had to be ready to defend itself and its capital. If London was lost, the country and the empire would surely follow.
          The London Defence Scheme
Reigate Fort was built on top of Reigate Hill in 1898 as part of the London Defence Scheme, a 72-mile chain of defence that stretched from the North Downs to Essex. It was designed to protect the capital while a huge ship-building programme was initiated by the government.

          Reigate Fort

    The last line of defence
One of 13 new military installations in the chain, Reigate Fort was a mobilisation centre, holding cutting tools for clearing trees and digging tools for entrenching, as well as ammunition. If an invasion materialised, trenches could quickly be dug to form the last line of defence for London.
          Features of Reigate Fort
Inside the heavy-duty gates of the fort, a number of separate buildings each had their own functions.
          The gates
Two sets of gates protect the entrance to the fort. The first are spiked and made of steel, the second are heavier and bullet-proof. They open to a width of 10ft, enough to let a horse-drawn wagon through.
          The tool store
This building held the equipment required for trench warfare. Spades and pickaxes for digging the trenches, saws and axes for clearing trees from the firing lines and spiked coils of barbed wire to slow an advancing army. Tents for the soldiers to sleep in may also have been stored here.
          The magazine
The two arched chambers of the magazine building were where munitions were stored. There was ammunition for muzzle-loading and breech-loading rifles, and fuses and shells for the heavy artillery guns located at nearby Redhill. Given all the explosives stored there, the magazine was covered with earth to prevent damage from enemy shelling.
          The casemates
Like the tool store, the underground casemates held entrenching tools. But if an invasion had happened, they would also have provided protection from enemy bombardment and may even have been used as war rooms, to co-ordinate military tactics.
          The decommissioning of Reigate Fort
By 1906, the British Admiralty was confident that its naval forces could safeguard against an invasion, particularly following the launch of the revolutionary battleship HMS Dreadnought. The mobilisation centres were no longer needed. Reigate Fort was decommissioned in 1906 and sold off the following year.

            MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

In a bid to foster a more compassionate and understanding community, Surrey County Council Public Health are leading with the “End Stigma Surrey” campaign, an important initiative aimed at reducing mental health stigma and discrimination. This crucial campaign focuses on raising awareness, providing information, and empowering individuals to challenge preconceptions surrounding mental health.
Mental health stigma reinforces stereotypes and misconceptions, contributing to a lack of understanding among the community. The economic impact is another facet that cannot be ignored. A community that stigmatises mental health issues may discourage individuals from seeking employment opportunities or hinder personal

growth due to the fear of discrimination.
The campaign’s primary mission is to reduce the stigma associated with mental health conditions and foster a more supportive and understanding community in Surrey. By building on the momentum of the ‘Time to Change’ campaign, End Stigma Surrey recognises the importance of transforming attitudes and beliefs surrounding mental health to create a more inclusive society. At the heart of the initiative are a dedicated website and social media platforms to disseminate information and share personal stories, aiming to create an open dialogue about mental health, debunk myths, and encourage empathy. In January 2024 we launch our free to access e-learning program to complement our anti-stigma toolkit and guide
          www.endstigmasurrey.org.uk
how to challenge stigma or discrimination experienced. Community involvement is a cornerstone of the campaign. Through targeted outreach programs and events, the initiative seeks to connect with residents across Surrey. End Stigma Surrey recognises the importance of education in dismantling stereotypes and will offer training opportunities to equip individuals and businesses with the knowledge and tools to challenge mental health stigma. As we embark on this collective journey towards a more inclusive and compassionate society, “End Stigma Surrey” stands as a beacon of hope, reminding us all that mental health is a shared responsibility, and by working together, we can create a community where everyone feels understood, supported, and valued.

            ACUPUNCTURE
When people find out I’m an Acupuncturist they often say, “Oh I had acupuncture years ago for my back pain, what else can it help?” Well, the short answer is everything and anything!
Most people associate acupuncture with managing pain, which is a large part of my practice, but there are so many other symptoms and conditions acupuncture can support including; fertility (the journey to pregnancy, pre, during, and post), managing Menopausal symptoms,

headaches / migraines, anxiety and insomnia to name just a few!
Acupuncturists treat holistically and try to get to the bottom of

what is causing the symptoms, for example two patients may visit for migraine management however they will have different “root causes”. They will be treated differently to try to stop the migraines occurring rather than just temporary relief. A change in symptoms can often occur after just one or two treatments. If you are interested in discussing how acupuncture could help you, please call or email for a free 15-minute no-obligation consultation.

A hand painted story about Epsom
Will be unveiled in West Hill pedestrian tunnel early in 2024

West Hill in Epsom will have a new mural installed in the pedestrian tunnel early in 2024. Comissioned by Go Epsom, the Business Improvement District, it is a hand painted story about Epsom, designed, created and executed by Ole Murphy, an art student.
The mural’s vibrant colours and abstract patterns come together to tell a story about Epsom’s emergence as a spa town in the 1600s and the ongoing story of Epsom. It contains hints of the pioneering use of Music Therapy at The Horton, references to the fame of Epsom Salts, galloping

horses are a repeating theme, telling a story about the town’s historical and current links to racing.
Karen Pengelly, the BID Manager at Go Epsom said “Using a young artist was really important to us, Ole carried out so much research into the history of Epsom, the mural is original, exciting, vibrant and brilliantly well done, it will transform a dark and unwelcoming space.”
The mural will be unveiled at the end of January and then installed in the tunnel. Follow Go Epsom on social media or at www.goepsom.com for details of the unveiling.

EWELL CASTLE PREP’S NEW SCHOOL BUS SERVICE

Ewell Castle Preparatory is a leading independent mixed ability co-ed day school in the North Surrey/ South West London borders, located in a green enclave within the heart of Ewell Village. We have our own on-site Forest School, expansive playground, library, an array of co-curricular clubs including music, dance and drama, and have our own on-site sports pitches. The climate for learning is positive, pupils enjoy learning and have particularly good relationships with their teachers and each other. We are known for our excellent pastoral care and family ethos, and many of our families also choose us because we are part of a through school, and we can offer a seamless transition from our Prep into our Senior School at Year 7, where scholarships and bursaries are available.
We guide our pupils to build important life skills and teamwork, supporting their emerging talents within a nurturing and intellectually curious environment. We are a school where children thrive, engage, and excel - and our staff love teaching here.
At Ewell Castle Prep School there is something for everyone and developing critical thinkers who are compassionate and curious, is what we are all about. We understand that who your children become is as important as what they know.

From September 2024, we are launching a brand-new South West London school bus route, for pupils in Years 3 to 8. There will be pick-ups and drop-offs in the Putney, Southfields and Wimbledon areas. Please contact Emily at admissions@ewellcastle.co.uk for details and to attend one of our forthcoming open events.

If you would like to visit Ewell Castle Nursery and Reception to find out how your child could thrive and benefit by joining us, please email admissions@ewellcastle.co.uk for more information or book online to attend an open event at www.ewellcastle.co.uk.

            SEATON HOUSE SCHOOL
Seaton House is an incredibly special place with a family environment created by everyone working together with one single aim; to support our children and help them to become the very best version of themselves! Recently awarded the Wellbeing Award for Schools, our assessor reported “this is genuinely a community where everyone knows everyone else, cares about their wellbeing and notices when people need support and are willing to offer it”.
Courtesy and kindness are expected as the norm and our exceptional team of staff encourage our girls to develop initiative, independence, resilience and confidence.
Seaton House is currently ranked 2nd in the Sunday Times Top 100 Prep School in England and it is no coincidence that our girls leave us to attend the very best schools in the area with many girls receiving multiple school offers.
Specialist teachers provide creative and innovative

teaching to students across the school and outstanding academic results are achieved yearon-year. Our most recent ISI inspection found us ‘Excellent’ across all areas.
Fees are very competitive as reported by £/ Schoolsmith Score, who stated that we “offer the best value for money” of Prep schools in Sutton. 15 hours
Early Years funding can be accepted in Nursery.
Being a small school with just 20 girls per class, our staff will get to know every child individually, learning their strengths and challenges to ensure every child thrives in all areas of school life.
Wraparound care operates from 7.30am – 6pm and an in-house holiday club runs in the major holidays. A wide-ranging choice of extra-curricular clubs are offered on a daily basis.
To best understand what a friendly, caring and vibrant school we are, come and meet us and let our pupils tell you themselves what makes us so special.
