EDITOR'S LETTER

Welcome e clocks have gone back, Th the nights are drawing in and all of a sudden there is a nip in the air. Autumn has arrived, and just like that we are hurtling full speed towards the end of the year.

Dan Dare, Space Pilot of the Future, was the dashing and iconic comic strip hero of the 1950s who captured the imagination of a generation with his adventures in space.

Illustrator Frank Hampson – the man who brought the character to life in print in the Eagle – spent years researching, drawing and crafting plot lines at his studio in Epsom.

A new exhibition, opening at Bourne Hall Museum this December, to coincide with what would have been the artist’s 100th birthday, will explore his connections to the borough.

But before we are consumed by all things Christmas, there's plenty to look forward to here in North Surrey.

We chat to Mr Hampson’s son, Peter, about growing up in Epsom and his memories of the art studio.

Wrap up warm and head out to see one of the fireworks displays that will be lighting up the night sky to mark Bonfire Night.

Plus, the judges have decided and the shortlist of businesses in the 2018 Epsom & Ewell Business Excellence Awards, which out&about is proud to support, has been announced.

OF THE FUTURE Dan Dare illustrator celebrated in centenary exhibition An exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Frank Hampson – the man who brought the iconic comic character Dan Dare to life – is coming to Epsom this December.

with the alien Mekon, and the full-colour illustrated pages fuelled the imaginations of boys and adults alike.

Born on December 21, 1918, in Audenshaw, Manchester, Frank Hampson spent his childhood and early career as an illustrator in Southport.

A hastily pulled together team of artists worked out of a makeshift studio in Southport on the early editions of the Eagle, but it soon became clear that larger premises would be needed, preferably closer to the publisher in London.

It was here that he met Marcus Morris, a vicar, and the man who came up with the idea of creating a new comic for boys that was the anthesis to the American comic strips of the time. And so the Eagle was born.

Ambitious from the outset, it was Hampson’s creative genius that led to the creation of the character Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future. Set in the year 2000, the futuristic world of space travel, the very British and dashing space explorer’s battle

The ‘dummy’ edition of the Eagle was picked up by Hulton Press. It printed the first edition, which featured Dan Dare on the front cover, on April 14, 1950. An overnight success, the print run of 900,000 sold out.

So in 1951, the Eagle, Rev Morris, Frank Hampson and the studio team moved to Epsom.

Initially, the studio operated from different premises, but from 1954 Bayford Lodge, in College Avenue, became both home to the Hampsons – Frank, his wife, Dorothy, and son, Peter – and the art studio.

“It was a large house. The downstairs was given over to the studio. There were always people around. I used to go downstairs to mooch around. There were lots of comics to read and people to talk to. They were always good to me, although I’m sure I was annoying!"

Bourne Hall Museum is appealing for the public’s help to locate and acquire artefacts, photos, memorabilia or publications relating to the acclaimed cartoonist and his work to feature in the commemorative exhibition, which will run from December to February 2019.

Peter remembers being a model for studio photographs taken for various scenes in the comic strip, and how the garden of Bayford Lodge was often used by the artists as they worked on future stories. Having a spaceship parked in the garden was just an added bonus for a young Peter.

All items donated will be fully acknowledged and returned at the end of the exhibition. Anyone who would like to contribute to the Frank Hampson Centenary exhibition should contact David Brooks at dbrooks@epsom-ewell.gov. uk or call 020 8394 1734.

“It seemed quite normal to me growing up, it didn’t really seem that extraordinary, although looking back it was quite extraordinary.”

During the 1950s the Eagle flourished. Peter said: “There was nothing like the Eagle on the market. Nothing was available that was this well presented, this colourful and with a huge variety of content.

“Dan Dare definitely sold the Eagle. The character came from my father’s experience during the war of seeing the V-2 rockets go up into the sky.”

But in 1959, Hulton Press was taken over by a rival company.

The studio was later disbanded and Hampson created his last comic strip for the Eagle, called Road of Courage, before resigning in 1962. Dan Dare’s weekly run ended in 1969 when the Eagle ceased production.

Hampson later worked as an illustrator for Ladybird books.

After being diagnosed with cancer in 1970, and undergoing lengthy treatment, he could no longer work for Ladybird.

Instead, he took a part-time job as a graphics technician at Ewell Technical College, now NESCOT, and took an Open University degree. He died in Epsom in 1985.

To mark what would have been his 100th birthday, Bourne Hall Museum is staging an exhibition about the life of the acclaimed illustrator and his work.

Museum curator Jeremy Harte said: “Within the community there may be people who remember, for example, the staged fights with ray guns outside Bayford Lodge, as Frank Hampson gathered material for the next instalment to go up on his drawing board.

“There is a significant amount of local interest and a number of people have already made contact with us. If anyone has books, pictures, toys or even just reminiscences, did he teach

Wrap up warm and head out to admire one of these fireworks displays

Get ready to oohh and ahhh as the night sky is sprinkled with colour as fireworks displays take place across Surrey to mark Bonfire Night. Here’s our pick of where to see some of the best displays.

Details of this year’s display are under wraps, but expect a spectacular show created by the 2018 British Fireworks champions, Illusion Fireworks.

The family-friendly fireworks display organised by Wallington and Carshalton Round Table is set to light up Carshalton Park.

Banstead Cricket Club’s annual fireworks display on Saturday, November 3, will be an evening of music, food and family fun.

As well as the fireworks there will also be a bonfire and the popular funfair returns to Hook Road Arena on Saturday, November 3.

There will be live music from rock ’n’ roll singer Gary Ellis and band Kazoom to warm up the crowd and the atmosphere ahead of the display, which starts at 7pm on Saturday, November 3.

The barbecue will be fired up to serve hot dogs and burgers, the bar will be open and there will be music from Brizzler after the fireworks. Entrance by donation.

The bonfire will be lit at 7.30pm.

A free park and ride service will run from Chessington Garden Centre, Longmead Industrial Estate and Hobbledown Children’s Farm. As well as free coach transport from Epsom and Tolworth train stations between 5pm and 9.45pm, with the last pick up at 7pm.

Gates open at 5.30pm with the display at 7.45pm. Tickets are £6 in advance, available from local outlets listed on the official website, or £8.50 on the gate (cash only). Under fives are free.

WW1 CENTENARY Series of events to mark centenary of end of the Great War A century ago on November 11, 1918, fighting ceased in the First World War.

Events commemorating those who served on the frontline – and at home – are being held this month to mark the 100-year anniversary of the end of the conflict.

Here’s how Surrey will remember the anniversary.

WW1 Memorial Unveiled A mural commemorating the Epsom and Ewell residents who lost their lives in the First World War has been unveiled at the Ashley Centre.

It lists the names of the 444 people who died in the Great War 100 years ago, many who left to fight on the frontline, but never returned. It is a poignant reminder of the impact of the conflict on the families and community left behind.

The mural was unveiled by the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell, Councillor Neil Dallen, on October 11, alongside representatives from The Royal British Legion.

It will remain on display until Armistice Day – Sunday, November 11 – as part of the Ashley Centre’s month of remembrance.

Visitors can also see the ‘Lone Soldier’ standing on top of the Ashley Centre, which will be illuminated at night, as part of the remembrance events.

Garden of Remembrance Schoolchildren will join the Mayor of Epsom & Ewell at the opening of Epsom’s Garden of Remembrance on November 5.

A service of remembrance will be held at 11am in honour of the men who died in the conflict, more than 130 at the Battle of Somme alone.

Poppy crosses will be planted in the garden in the grounds of Bourne Hall Park.

Last man to fall in battle A special commemorative service will be held to honour Trooper Frederick Watkins – the last Epsom man to fall in battle in WW1.

Trooper Watkins, who served with the 20th Hussars, was killed in action at Avesnes-Le-Sec, France, on November 7, 1918, four days before the end of the war was declared. He was 32 years old.

He will be honoured at a commemoration in Epsom Market Square at 11am on November 7.

WW1 Beacons of Light A beacon will be lit in Bourne Hall Park at 7pm on November 11 as part of a national tribute to the millions killed or wounded in the First World War. The event will also commemorate the men and women on the home front who underpinned the war effort.

Epsom and Ewell will join more than 1,000 other locations across the country in the WWI Beacons of Light commemoration, which will symbolise the end of the darkness of war and the return of the light of peace.

WW1 CENTENARY

POLESDEN HOSPITAL Exhibition uncovers the role Polesden Lacey played during WW1 Tucked away in the Surrey countryside, the Edwardian country estate of Polesden Lacey played host to a string of politicians, aristocrats and members of the royal family.

But in the midst of World War One, its owner, the socialite Margaret Greville, opened the house as a convalescent home for officers wounded on the battlefields.

From June 1915 until late 1916, Polesden was home to more than 80 soldiers who were cared for by a team of military and volunteer nurses as well as Mrs Greville’s own domestic servants.

Among the officers that convalesced at the country estate were army chaplain Maurice Peel; Tommy Fairfax-Ross, who became a close friend of Mrs Greville, and William Tate who was only saved, after being wounded at the Battle of Loos, because a stretcher bearer happened to notice his eyelids flickering.

Caroline Williams, House and Collections Manager at Polesden Lacey, says: “Our staff and volunteers have spent National Trust Images

the last five years on a detective hunt, researching life at Polesden during the First World War – this exhibition is our chance to share that work with our visitors and it’s fitting that we’re able to do this as part of the commemorations this autumn.”

The exhibition offers a rare glimpse into life at Polesden during the Great War, retelling the stories of the soldiers who were treated at the hospital, the people who worked there and the guests that visited.

Visitors will be able to see first-hand the Polesden Lacey Visitors’ Book for the period covering the Great War, photo albums with original photographs showing patients and staff at Polesden during this time, as well as Margaret Greville’s own personal letters and medals.

INGREDIENTS

STARTER

For the soup

SERVES 4-6

300g dried white beans (haricot or cannellini) 1 bulb of garlic, cloves separated, skins left on 600ml whole milk 3 tbsp olive oil 2 leeks, well washed and finely chopped Leaves from 1 rosemary sprig, finely chopped 2 litres vegetable stock Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Splash of double cream to serve (optional) Garlic flavoured extra virgin olive oil, to serve (optional)

For the pesto

60g pine nuts 2 handfuls (about 75g) wild garlic leaves, chopped 4–6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 3 tbsp finely grated parmesan cheese

METHOD

5. Add the crushed garlic, then taste and adjust the seasoning.

1. The night before you make the soup, soak the beans in cold water. The next morning, drain them in a colander, then rinse.

6. Meanwhile, make the pesto. Toast the pine nuts in a dry frying pan until golden brown, then tip into a food processor with the wild garlic, extra virgin olive oil and parmesan and blitz to a smooth paste. Season to taste, then set aside.

2. Place the garlic cloves in a saucepan and pour over onethird of the milk. Set over a medium heat and bring to the boil, then discard the milk. Repeat twice more. When the garlic is cool enough to handle, peel and crush the cloves.

This process takes the harshness from the garlic and makes it sweet.

3. Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-based saucepan and gently sweat the leeks and rosemary until they soften slightly. Take care not to brown them, to prevent them from becoming bitter.

4. Add the beans and stock, bring to the boil and boil rapidly for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to a steady simmer and cook, uncovered, until the beans are soft; this takes about 45 minutes.

7. Carefully pour the soup into a blender – or use a stick blender – and purée until smooth, splashing in a little water if it is too thick. Return to a clean saucepan and reheat gently until hot. Check the seasoning, adding a little salt and pepper if needed.

8. For extra richness, add a dash of cream and/or some flavoured extra virgin olive oil when you serve the soup.

9. Serve in warmed bowls with a spoonful of pesto swirled on top, offering the remaining pesto in a bowl on the side.

LUNCH

Silla Bjerrum’s Pork Belly Yuzo Miso From Robata by Silla Bjerrum, (Publisher Jacqui Small, £25)

SERVES 4 MAKES 8 SKEWERS

YOU WILL NEED

METHOD

8 wooden skewers, soaked for 30 minutes in cold water.

1. Make a brine. Place the sugar and salt in a mixing bowl, then pour over the boiling water and mix well. Top up the brine with the ice-cold water.

INGREDIENTS For the Skewers

100g (3½oz./½ cup) caster (superfine) sugar 50g (2oz./1⁄3 cup) seaweed salt 100ml (scant ½ cup) boiling water 400ml (1½ cups) ice-cold water 600g (1lb. 5oz.) strips of pork belly Sake-Mirin Spray For the Yuzu Miso Dressing

1 tbsp mirin 1 tbsp caster (superfine) sugar 50g (2oz.) yellow miso 1½ tbsp yuzu juice

2. Trim the pork belly, removing the rind and leaving as much of the fat attached to the meat as possible. Cut into 1 .5 x 1.5cm (1/2 x 1/2 in.) wide pieces, add to the brine and leave to soak for 2 hours in the fridge.

3. For the dressing, place the mirin, sugar and miso in a small saucepan over a gentle heat and stir until the sugar is melted and the mirin incorporated. Remove from the heat, stir in the yuzu juice, and set aside to cool down 4. Start the robata grill. Drain the pork belly through a colander, discarding the liquid. Divide the pork between the eight skewers. Grill over the bincho coals, spraying with sake-mirin spray and rotating every 2 minutes.

Repeat until the pork is cooked through and crisp on the edges, about 8–10 minutes. Remove from the robata and, while still piping hot, add dollops of the yuzu miso to the crispy pork, then place in a serving dish

DINNER MAIN COURSE: Dave’s Special Risotto

SERVES 4

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1. Heat the oil in a 40cm (16in) paella pan or a 4 litre (7 pint) wide and shallow casserole pan.

1 kg (2lb) chicken, cut into small pieces 2 onions, chopped 4 cloves of garlic, chopped 350g of risotto rice 1.75 litres (3 pints) boiling chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper Large pinch of saffron threads, finely crushed 225g (8oz) cooked prawns 1 medium chorizo, sliced 1 glass of white wine 100g streaky bacon Handful of parsley, finely chopped Handful of parmesan to garnish

2. Add chicken and the streaky bacon and cook for about 10 minutes until lightly browned.

3. Add onions, the garlic and the chorizo and fry for 5 minutes, then add the rice.

4. Stir for about 2 to 3 minutes then stir in the salt and pepper.

5. Dissolve the saffron in 2 tablespoons of stock along with 1 glass of white wine and add this and the chicken stock a ladle full at a time until absorbed by the rice. Keep stirring to make sure the rice doesn’t stick to the pan while it boils.

6. Gradually turn down the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes until the rice is tender and the last of the liquid has been absorbed.

7. Once the liquid is fully absorbed and the rice is cooked to taste add the prawns.

8. Serve with grated parmesan and parsley to garnish.

SWEET DESSERT: Toby Tobin’s Best Chocolate Brownie

SERVES 4

From The Recipe for Success Cook Book, ÂŁ10 (available to buy from The Ashley Centre office)

INGREDIENTS

175g chocolate 175g butter 250g caster sugar Pinch of salt 3 large eggs (beaten) 115g plain flour 2 teaspoons vanilla essence 100g chocolate chips

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius, gas mark 4.

2. Place the chocolate and butter into a glass bowl and melt over a simmering pan of water.

3. A dd the sugar, salt and beaten eggs to the chocolate and gently fold in the flour.

4. F inally add the vanilla essence and chocolate chips, stir well and scrape the mixture into a lined baking tin.

5. B ake for 20-25 minutes in the centre of the oven. The top should be slightly crisp and the centre soft.

6. A llow to cool in the tin before cutting and try not to eat them all before your family gets a chance!

7. S erve warm with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream.

It’s fair to say that multitasking is something of a fine art, but it is one that artist Tasmeen Oozeerally has got down to a T.

We caught up with the mum-of-four ahead of her latest exhibition with Tadworth Art Group to find out how she manages to juggle life at home, the school run and overseeing an ongoing home renovation project, with finding the time to paint.

And, excitingly, it seems that Tasmeen doesn’t always limit herself in her subject matter.

“Believe me, if all those things I have to worry about and agonise over were stacked one on top of the other you would barely see my head poking up from behind them and now I have added ‘artist’ to the mix. But when I sit down to paint it takes me beyond my everyday routine and into a world of boundless creativity,” she says.

Tasmeen’s early study of art and design led to a career in architecture, but being invited to join the prestigious Tadworth Art Group was the spark that re-awoke her artistic abilities and passion for painting.

“The aim of my artwork, predominantly using oil-on-canvas, is to further

“The sense of achievement and satisfaction is why I paint, but there is more to it than that. It adds something to you, as a person, something indefinable that can only be described as raising up your soul,’ she adds.

“Am I a better person for painting?

Probably not, but by raising up my soul, then just for a brief second I can raise up other people’s as well.”

Tadworth Art Group Winter Exhibition Tasmeen will be among 35 artists exhibiting at Tadworth Art Group’s Winter Exhibition.

"Teachers who love teaching inspire children who love learning,” is a quote on a gift given to Millie Govekar by her daughter. It is a motto that she aspires to each day, believing that education is a journey that we take throughout our lives and engaging children at a young age can help them develop a lifelong love of learning.

It is nearly six years since Millie took the plunge and launched her own private tutoring business in Cheam.

A former school teacher, with 22 years’ experience across both the state and independent sectors, a desire to work on her own terms and do something she was passionate about led her to set up Millie Whizz.

Since opening in 2012, business has increased year on year, and Millie now teaches more than 60 pupils each week, including international students in cities such as Moscow, Osaka and Seoul.

Her business success was recognised at the Sutton Business Awards 2018 when she won the Woman in Business Award and was Highly Commended in the Best Business for Customer Service; Best SME and Entrepreneur of the Year categories.

Millie tutors children from year 4 upwards, helping children prepare for grammar and independent schools’ entrance exams as well as common entrance exams. In some subjects, such as English, tutoring extends to GCSE and A-level.

Tutoring complements what is taught in school, says Millie.

“Often children are struggling with a topic because they have not been shown how to do it.”

Her approach is to explain the whys and hows so that pupils not only learn what method they should use to solve a particular problem, but understand the reasoning behind it.

Using a combination of new technologies and traditional teaching methods, Millie’s small group sessions build on the knowledge gained in the classroom and extends pupils’ skills so they are ready to take the next step in their learning.

For Millie, tutoring is not simply about the results, it is about the all round development of each individual child, although her track record speaks for itself. For the past three years over 94% of the children she has worked with have gone on to pass their entrance exams, gaining places at schools including all the Sutton selectives, Tiffins Boys and Girls, KCS Wimbledon and City of London Freemen’s to name a few.

“I am a firm believer that education changes lives,” says Millie.

“I try to instil in children that they want to be the best they can be, to be confident about their learning and not be afraid to ask questions.

“I really, really love what I do. I think I have got the perfect job – I see them flourish and grow in confidence.”

ON STAGE Schools Festival celebrates 18 years of bringing the Bard’s plays to life “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players,” is one of Shakespeare’s most quoted passages.

Bringing the playwright’s work to life on stage will be the climax of months of work and rehearsals for scores of students across Surrey as they take part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival.

The festival, run by the Shakespeare Schools Foundation, celebrates its 18th birthday this year. Since its launch in 2000 it has worked with 300,000 young people using Shakespeare as a catalyst to explore topics like racism, gender equality and mental health and helping schoolchildren develop new skills, new friendships and to grow in confidence.

Three nights of performances will be held at Leatherhead Theatre this month featuring some of the Bard’s most famous works.

Among the schools taking part are Glyn School, Ewell, and Manor House School, Bookham.

University for the Creative Arts has been named ‘Modern University of the Year’ in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

The title was awarded to UCA for the ground-breaking work the university is doing through its newlyestablished Business School for the Creative Industries in Epsom, in addition to its excellent graduate employment record and levels of student satisfaction.
